McCain defends 'pre-surge' comment

Posted: Friday, May 30, 2008 4:07 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann and NBC's Mark Murray
At a press conference today in Milwaukee, McCain defended himself from Democratic accusations that he misspoke Thursday, when he incorrectly said that the US had "drawn down to pre-surge levels" in Iraq.

Asked in the media avail if he got his facts wrong, McCain replied by stating that US troops levels are down -- but said nothing of pre-surge levels. "We have drawn down three of the five brigades. They’re home. The marines [inaudible] are home. By the end of July, [inaudible] are back. That’s just facts, those are just facts. The surge, we have drawn down from the surge and we will complete that drawdown to the end -- at the end of July. That’s just a factual statement."

He added, "The important thing here is not that three of the five brigades are back, which they are and the others are coming back in July. It’s whether they would have been sent in the first place and succeeded or failed. Sen. Obama said that the effect would be the reverse. So, he has no fundamental understanding of the entire situation that warranted the surge, which led to the success."

But according to NBC's Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, the US has NOT drawn down to "pre-surge levels" in Iraq -- and they will NOT be at those levels even after the five surge brigades finish redeploying later this summer. The math is a bit fuzzy, but here are the facts: The US now has 155,000 troops on the ground in Iraq, and that is 17 brigade combat teams plus combat support forces. The baseline number of troops, now commonly called the "pre-surge level," was about 132,000 troops, or 15 brigade combat teams, plus the support forces (engineers, medics, cooks, etc).

Three of the five surge brigades are fully redeployed back to the US. The fourth has already begun to redeploy now (heading back to Fort Lewis). All five brigades will be back in the US by the end of July. When all five surge brigades are out of Iraq, the US will still have between 140,000 and 144,000 troops on the ground -- about 10,000 more than the "pre-surge level." Why?  Most of the combat support and logistics troops will stay behind.  So will the additional MPs, aviation forces, and other individual battalions sent over in bits and pieces as the surge forces arrived last year.

In a conference call sponsored by the campaign, Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl (R) also defended McCain's comment yesterday. "It's instructive that the Obama campaign, rather than deal with that real issue and Obama's lack of experience, is trying to nitpick the verb -- or I guess the tense of the verb -- about the surge troops being home. So that's the bottom line: The surge troops are all going to be home by the end of July."

"Take the worst possibility here, which is Sen. McCain misspoke. And that because of the specific words used, what he said was not entirely accurate, Ok, so what? What does that amount to? That's the worst possible scenario."

Old man yells at cloud!
Wow, misspeaking/fudging the facts is becoming accepted now?  Isn't that what got us into trouble in the first place?
Senator McCain, with no help from Joe what is your position on the economy?

We're informed voters and
we approve this answer....
Let the hatred from the Obama supporters begin in five, four, three, two, . . ., one . . .
Obama should make a trip to Baghdad, and use it as a keynote at the Dem Convention to underline how screwed-up McCain's understanding is of the reality on the ground- politically, militarily, and, just for fun, a refresher for the old boy on the difference between Shia and Sunni.
Most of these Republicans are stupid!

Experience is what led to the disaster.  The word   experience should be removed from their vocabulary.

All the "Washington" talk is sickening and they need to bury their heads in the sand.  Experience...PUUULLease!

In other news, Obama apologized for stating there are 58 states. Barack said "Everyone knows there are 32 states, plus the Moon".
McCain can't remember what he said the day before, or he doesn't know the difference between "drawn down" and "drawn down to pre-surge levels."

Oh-boy.  This is not the time to elect a senile president.  Sadly, he simply has TOO MUCH experience.
That amounts to confirming that Sen. McCain has not a clue of what is going on in Iraq. Whether it is troop strength, the nature of the conflict, or the agendas of the various factions.  He could travel to Iraq every week and it appears that he would still not grasp, or remember, what is going on.
People Better Listen To And Watch McCain Carefully

I'm teling you folks, McCain does not have a clue what he is saying. This guy does not have it. Couple this problem with his temper and his apparent love for aggression and this makes him a very dangerrous person. Very dangerous.

Although McCain does not have a clue people better get a clue as to what is going on in this guy's head. There is much confusion and some instability there so when challenged (especially by any enemies) that temper will go on a rampage and he will strike out. This is a big problem folks. Mark my word. Before the GE is over McCain is going to lose big time and several times with the press and Obama when he is challenged and pressed on his comments and ideas.
PLEASE POST!

THE CASE FOR TREASON UNDER THE RULE OF LAW!

Commiting fraud in order to go to war. Treason by revealing Valerie Plame's identity in order to throw people off their trail. Obstruction of justice. Torture. Manslaughter. Propagandizing. Election fraud. Profiteering.

The president was leaving an event in North Carolina, McClellan recalled, and as they walked to Air Force One a reporter yelled out a question: Had the president, who had repeatedly condemned the selective release of secret intelligence information, enabled Scooter Libby to leak classified information to The New York Times to bolster the administration's arguments for war?

McClellan took the question to the president, telling Bush: "He's saying you yourself were the one that authorized the leaking of this information."

"And he said, ''Yeah, I did.''And I was kind of taken aback," McClellan said.

"For me I came to the decision that at that point I needed to look for a way to move on, because it had undermined, I think, a lot of what we had said."

HE IS A TRUE AMERICAN PATRIOT, JUST DO NOT GO HUNTING WITH DICK!
McCain's "miss-speaks" are becoming normal for him.

Soon he will surpass Hillary.

The troop levels may be down, according to McCain, but according to McCain " We will not lose this war."

How many more troops will lose their lives.

Obama '08
Those 'Fallen Soldiers' still in your audiences Barack? Don't they get a bit gamey in the sun?
WHY HE WILL LOOSE AND CAN NOT BE PRESIDENT IN MY BOOK!

Bush, McCain, GOP and CLINTON voted to send 4100 troops to there death and for what? That is the real story here!

1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush/McCain’s invasions of Iraq?

2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

3. Are we paying more for gas now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

5. Is the White Houses creditability better now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

6. Is the budget deficit higher now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

7. Is the Middle East more peaceful now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

8. Do we have more American Solders dead or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

This WAR has cost us so much; it is unbelievable that damage that Bush administration has done to this nation. The saddest thing about this WAR most of the American cannot comprehend what has happen during the last seven years of this administration. Further, McCain wants to go down the same road as well disgruntled Hillary supporters! Go figure the blood of these solders are on your hands!

".....what he said was not entirely accurate, Ok, so what? What does that amount to?"

-Jon Kyl (R)

It amounts to that fact that your boy, (McConfused), does'nt know what the heck is going on, or what the heck he's talking about!!!!!!!
Yeah - they're home.  Then they get sent back to Hell 6 or 7 times until they are finally shot or maimed or they commit suicide - only then will the military no longer find them useful and let them be.

Meanwhile, I want McSame to explain to the soldiers children why Mommy or Daddy isn't ever coming home again and because they died for...for...what?  Why the fudge are we there again?

Look those children in their eyes, and into the widow's eyes and tell them WHY THEY DIED.

Bet you can't, you self-serving egotistical SOB.

I hope when you sold your sould to Hagee, Fixed Noise, and the neocons the price was worth it.
The national nightmare will continue.

Look how many people still support McBush jr and this Bush crime family.

Mcwar is almost as popular as Obama or Hillary.

No the national nightmare will be over when most americans come to terms with what they have become after decades of conditioning by the capitalist media and the industrial military complex.

Capitalism will warp the minds of its citizens with greed and desires for imperialism.

The nightmare continues until most americans repent for their imperialism and war mongering.

Mcwar bombed men women and children and we called him a war hero.

I dont see the nightmare ending any time soon we prefer to blame our politicans

The fact that McCain and the GOP have decided hitting Obama over his lack of Iraq visits is rather stupid. Making this a line of attack will remind everyone of McCain’s dog and pony show where he visited Bagdad market guarded by “100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead” while wearing a bullet-proof vest. McCain's statement afterwards made him the joke on every comedy program and blog in and out of the country. Our troops in Iraq have better things to then act as guide to these dog and pony shows. McCain's attack is stupid publicity show.
So all this experience is the best reason to elect McCain. Let's take a look at history. Here's a list of positions that one of our most experienced presidents possesed:

- elected five times to the House of Representatives
- served as interlude as Minister to Russia
- served for a decade in the Senate
- became Secretary of State
- was Minister to Great Britain

Sound impressive???

It was James Buchanan who, until Bush, is universally accepted as the worst president this nation has ever seen.

I'll take my chances on a man with intelligence and vision.
Barack, the Pentagon called. They want the "Military for Dummies" book back. It's overdue.
Verbage ...accurate verbage that's the real experience we have seen in Bosnia too...

McShame must be staying up way past his bed time..

Cookies and warm milk and nappy pooh before 20:00
hours tonight ...Okay McShame??
McCain is going to be exposed eventually, and here is how you can help him be exposed....

How's that invitation/challenge/gauntlet you threw down to teach Barack a thing or two about what's hap'nin on the ground in Iraq doing McCain?

Don't you look foolish?
Yo, McFossil - blow.

"Take the worst possibility here, which is Sen. McCain misspoke. And that because of the specific words used, what he said was not entirely accurate, Ok, so what? What does that amount to? That's the worst possible scenario."
________________________________________________________

What that amounts to is that if you add in all of the other time Sen. McCain "misspoke" you see a pattern.

That pattern is either the Senator is ill informed, having a "senior moment", misleading the American public, or a combination of all of the above. Personally, I find all of these inexcusable for someone running for the highest office of this great country.

We already have a uniformed liar running this country.  We don't need another.

Other than that, it's not a big deal.

So what, indeed. Jerk.
It matters because McNutt doesn't seen to have a clue either about what is going on over there.  I have the utmost respect for his service to our country a long time ago, a very long time ago in another day and age.  Maybe he should pay attention to speaches or have someone proffread his before he misspeaks again.
Also he who lives in glass houses - have your crap in order before you rip someone else apart you NUTT JOB.
McCain got fact slapped!
Mccain is part of the Bush propaganda capmpagin. Thanks for you service McCain, however, that doesn't make you an expert. The only thing he's consistent is not being consistent. Kind of like Hillarbee. I'm sick of Bush's, and Clinton's! Lets turn the page. Obama is smart, energenic,n consistent and will make a wonderful president!!!
Whatever you do, don't have the Democrats attempt to do math! When they meet tomorrow to decide what to do with Florida and Michigan, lets hope they don't put it to a vote. If they do, they'll be there for months trying to figure out how to do it, and once they finish, they'll be there for several more months trying count the votes.
Bush pushed me away from the party and McCain makes me glad I left. His arrogance and condescending manner are ridiculous. How much longer before he chokes a reporter that asks a question he doesn't like? I predict he will lose it during a debate with Obama. That will be his demise.

Obama 08/12
Read these comments by McCain again regarding the surge which prompts another question..."WHAT F#*ING SUCCESS?!!!!!!!
Like I read somewhere else, what McCain said is equal to "Mission Accomplished" and "Mission Will Be Accomplished".

Verb usage, as they're arguing, is VERY IMPORTANT because it speaks to your judgement and competence.  Bush is judged by "Mission Accomplished" and not "will be" as he probably wishes now.
No worse than the misspeak that Obama made himself, huh? Well then why the big fuss over that and not McSame's error? Republicans, it seems you're all the same, but you can prove me wrong, show your real patriotism, show me the best part of this land of milk and honey, vote for Obama in November!!
I thought that McCain claimed to be an expert on Iraq.  With the way that he's been stepping all over himself no one should believe him.  He doesn't even have a definition of "success".  He's supposed to be some sort of expert because of his photo-ops in Iraq but he keeps getting it wrong every time when he doesn't have someone to hold his hand and whisper the answers to him.  What's going to happen when Lieberman or Graham aren't there to bail him out?  This kind of misstatement is what is going to happen.  He can't be trusted to be the Commander-in-Chief.  Everyone here knows that 144,000 troops is more than 130,000 therefore McCain is a liar.  For all of his claims of patriotism, John McCain didn't even support our troops by signing the GI Bill.  He should have to explain that at every military installation and VFW hall that he visits.  Mr. McCain is going to get annihilated in the Fall.
Yo Hillary,

Your endorsement of McCain as, 'ready on day one', to pass the Commander In Chief test, ain't lookin so splow, right about now!!
OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD !!!
Yeah.  The math is a bit fuzzy.

And uh, the logic is a bit... fuzzy.

And uh, the reportage is... yes, a bit fuzzy. (Is this news?)

Between David Gregory and Tom Brokaw this week, we now know that it is hard, it is really hard, being an honest journalist.

ya know?

A new book for defensive and patriotic (for dollars) journalists:

The Greatest Degeneration:  How we Knew it was Bad, but Liked the Money and Parties too Much (deeper shade of sotto)

or... Ducking Sniper Bullets in Georgetown: It's Hard to Be a Pimp

it's always best to check nbc sources. it's not clear if the sources are working for nbc that day, air america, the dnc, or moveon. they do get around.
"Take the worst possibility here, which is Sen. McCain misspoke. And that because of the specific words used, what he said was not entirely accurate, Ok, so what? What does that amount to? That's the worst possible scenario."

So Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl cannot attack Obama for misspeaking.

Someone needs to keep a list somewhere of all of these sorts of statements so that in the future if Jon Kyl lambastes Obama for misspeaking we can take Jon Kyl's quote, inscribe it onto a baseball bat, and then beat Jon Kyle with it.

I think politics would be much more enjoyable if this sort of enforcement of consistency was regulated and mandatory.
I'm an Obama supporter, and I have to admit that this doesn't sound like a story with legs.

Like the Auschwitz/Buchenwald misspeak.

In 24/7 news cycles, both sides are going to misspeak. I just don't see this one as really mattering.
no understanding?  even I understand that if you pay grift or bribes, you get some semblance of results.  We still lost over 50 troops last month.  This is not a success by any measure.  And if he doesn't quit yelling at clouds about he will "never surrender,..." I am gonna' have to scream.  Seriously, don't you have to define the win before you define the loss?  This is a so completely ridiculous.  McCain is OUT OF TOUCH with Americans.  He sounds like Dick Cheney's "So!" when told Americans do not support this war.  It is now our LONGEST combat in the history of our country.  And for what?  The only way to support our troops is to bring them home.  Iraq will not stand up until we stand down.  I don't need McCain to tell me what I see in front of me.  McClellan has revealed what we've all known to be the truth, we were lied into this mess.  It will take a true outsider to get us out of it.  Define your 100 year war, McCain.  You are continuing the failed Bush policies on this, so I can only reason that you intend to continue the rest of his failed policies economically, diplomatically (said with a sneer) and on every other measurable front.  It is time for the American people to elect a government that represents OUR values, OUR policies and the things that matter to us.  Not your war mongering, pipe dreams that aren't grounded in fact or substance.
And look who's complaining about a verb. The king of the nitpickers, old man McCain himself. I guess he can't remember his reaction to Obama's misspeaking on Auschwitz rather than Buckenwald?
Where is Joe Lieberman when you need him? Maybe he was nervous because I heard there was acrowd of teenagers standing by looking menacing. That always shakes up the old folk.
McCain,

You blew it. Have the character to admit you made a mistake.

Oops. I forgot. You're running for Dubya's 3rd term. You don't have it in you to own up.

I forgot, you're not my Obama.
McCain having another old-man-yells-at-cloud moment.
I see Capt "Cut and Paste" Smash is back.
Thanks to Jaycee, Ventura for an excellent previous post explaining how the primary process works.
I am also applauding John Kerry for going to bat for Obama today.  This is what we need more of..more Dem leaders re-inforcing Obama's positions.  Come on lets hear some more of our leaders speak out.  We need unity and strong respected voices and we need them now!
Hey Beaver Cleves, Barack doesn't have it---Gee Dub lost it in a tumbleweed pile when he left Crawford....
John McCain hates our troops, especially after they come home.

John McCain: "I take a back seat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans."

So let's take McCain up on his invitation. Here is how he has stood on recent legislation supported by major veterans organizations:

* On Webb's GI Bill, he expressed opposition, and he was AWOL when it was time to vote on May 22.

* Last September, he voted against another Webb bill that would have mandated adequate rest for troops between combat deployments.

* On a badly needed $1.5-billion increase for veterans medical services for fiscal year 2007 -- to be funded through closing corporate tax loopholes -- he voted no. He also voted against establishing a trust fund to bolster under-budgeted veterans hospitals.

* In May 2006, he voted against a $20-billion allotment for expanding swamped veterans medical facilities.

* In April 2006, he was one of 13 Senate Republicans who voted against an amendment to provide $430 million for veterans outpatient care.

* In March 2004, he voted against and helped defeat on a party-line vote a $1.8-billion reserve for veterans medical care, also funded by closing tax loopholes.
