Obama slams McCain on Iraq facts

Obama isn't expected to speak until 7:45 pm ET at a rally in Great Falls, MT. But his campaign has released excerpts of his remarks, which go right after McCain's "pre-surge levels" misstatement yesterday. They also invoke Scott McClellan's new book.

"There are honest differences about how to move forward in Iraq, just like there were honest differences about whether or not we should go to war," Obama is supposed to say. "John McCain was for the invasion of Iraq; I opposed it. John McCain wants to continue George Bush’s war in Iraq indefinitely; I want to end it. So there’s going to be a clear choice for the American people this November."

"But that’s not what John McCain’s been talking about the last few days. He’s been proposing a joint trip to Iraq that’s nothing more than a political stunt. He’s even been using it to raise a few dollars for his campaign. But it seems like Sen. McCain’s a lot more interested in my travel plans than the facts, because yesterday – in his continued effort to put the best light on a failed policy – he stood up in Wisconsin and said, 'We have drawn down to pre-surge levels' in Iraq."

"That’s not true, and anyone running for commander-in-chief should know better. As the saying goes, you’re entitled to your own view, but not your own facts. We’ve got around 150,000 troops in Iraq -- 20,000 more than we had before the surge. We have plans to get down to around 140,000 later this summer -- that’s still more troops than we had in Iraq before the surge. And today, Sen. McCain refused to correct his mistake. Just like George Bush, when he was presented with the truth, he just dug in and refused to admit his mistake. His campaign said it amounts to 'nitpicking.'"

"Well, I don’t think tens of thousands of American troops amounts to nitpicking. Tell that to the young men and women who are serving bravely and brilliantly under our flag. Tell that to the families who have seen their loved ones fight tour after tour after tour of duty in a war that should’ve never been authorized and never been waged."

"It’s time for a debate that’s based on the truth, and I can’t think of anything more important than how many Americans are in harm’s way. It’s time for a debate that’s based on how we’re going to end this war -- not a debate that’s based on raising a few dollars for John McCain’s campaign."

"The American people have had enough spin. Just this week, we were reminded by President Bush’s own former spokesman of how it was deception -- not straight talk -- that misled the American people into war. It’s time to cut through the tough talk so that we can be straight with the American people about a war that’s cost us thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars without making us safer. It’s time to end the political game-playing so that we can finally end this war. That’s what I’ll do in this campaign. And that’s what I’ll do when I’m President of the United States."

*** UPDATE *** McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds released this statement: “We agree with Barack Obama about one thing -- with troops on battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan, we should have an honest, respectful debate about the best way forward. And if Barack Obama wants facts, we're happy to have a debate based in fact: the fact is Barack Obama has refused to have a one on one meeting with General Petraeus, and has avoided a fact-finding visit to Iraq for over 872 days. The fact is, Barack Obama has voted against bullets and body armor for our troops while they’ve been fighting extremists abroad. The fact is, Senator Obama has been critical, but failed to hold a single oversight hearing on our mission in Afghanistan despite his position in the Senate. The fact is, he fails to grasp that a reckless withdrawal, while it may elevate his political aspirations, it will lead to chaos, danger and increased Iranian influence in the region. The reality is Barack Obama’s lack of action amounts to weak leadership, and shows he is just not ready to be our commander in chief.”

GIVE'EM HELL OBAMA!

Or As Harry Truman would say...

TELL THE TRUTH ON THEM SO THEY'LL THINK IT'S HELL!
The national nightmare will continue.

Look how many people still support McBush jr and this Bush crime family.

Mcwar is almost as popular as Obama or Hillary.

No the national nightmare will be over when most americans come to terms with what they have become after decades of conditioning by the capitalist media and the industrial military complex.

Capitalism will warp the minds of its citizens with greed and desires for imperialism.

The nightmare continues until most americans repent for their imperialism and war mongering.

Mcwar bombed men women and children and we called him a war hero.

I dont see the nightmare ending any time soon we prefer to blame our politicans

The fact that McCain and the GOP have decided hitting Obama over his lack of Iraq visits is rather stupid. Making this a line of attack will remind everyone of McCain’s dog and pony show where he visited Bagdad market guarded by “100 American soldiers, with three Blackhawk helicopters, and two Apache gunships overhead” while wearing a bullet-proof vest. McCain's statement afterwards made him the joke on every comedy program and blog in and out of the country. Our troops in Iraq have better things to then act as guide to these dog and pony shows. McCain's attack is stupid publicity show.
MCcAIN: THIS IS NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN!

WHY HE WILL LOOSE AND CAN NOT BE PRESIDENT IN MY BOOK!

Bush, McCain, GOP and CLINTON voted to send 4100 troops to there death and for what? That is the real story here!

1. Is Iran stronger or weaker since Bush/McCain’s invasions of Iraq?

2. Has Osama bin Laden been killed or captured since Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

3. Are we paying more for gas now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

4. Is our economy better of now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

5. Is the White Houses creditability better now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

6. Is the budget deficit higher now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

7. Is the Middle East more peaceful now or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

8. Do we have more American Solders dead or before Bush/McCain’s invasion of Iraq?

This WAR has cost us so much; it is unbelievable that damage that Bush administration has done to this nation. The saddest thing about this WAR most of the American cannot comprehend what has happen during the last seven years of this administration. Further, McCain wants to go down the same road as well disgruntled Hillary supporters! Go figure the blood of these solders are on your hands!

Obama needs to stay current, McCain has already clarified his remarks. Obama is working overtime to lose the war in Iraq, but we need not worry, he'll never get elected on his platform of defeat.
Yes it is and the time is now!  The clocking is running, but McBush was already out of time when he  chose to continue the Bush presidency.

Republicans and "facts"...spare us!  We haven't had facts for 8 years.

Go to Iraq..for what?  The bills to be signed are here in the US.  If McCain doesn't have a pen, I have a handy skilcraft he can use, hook someone?  Get him off the stage!
Please don't confuse bush/cheney/mcant with the truth and facts.
Wow, that's such a great speech. It hit the mark on every level: common sense, excitement, platform, focus and just plain awesome.

I'm sure C-Span will cover it so I can hear it all. When John McCain speaks he usually stumbles over the facts and the words and seems to think if he just says "my friends" enough times, it will substitute for accuracy.
McCain's surge statements are not simple gaffe.
For one thing, he's claiming his military experience equals foreign-policy-commander-in-chief experience.

But much more importantly, he's feeding a LIE to Americans when he first says we're already at pre-surge levels...and then he comes back with a REVISED LIE that is STILL a LIE.  We will NOT be at pre-surge levels by the end of this summer.

It's the same LIES 'W' has been feeding us.  ...Such as declaring 'victory', insisting on WMDs and a direct conection between Hussein and Al Qaida.

McCains LIES are the SAME FLAVOR...Selling the 'success' of the war while at the same time overlooking the tremendous costs to our country.

Don't BUY this LIE.
And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is WHY Barack Obama will be the next POTUS. He's got the right stuff!
BOO-YAH!!!
We have lost all respect for the leadership in

Washington...

That's why we play hardball...

Meet use in the streets...

WE'RE READY TO RUMBLE....!!!!!!

The GOP's going put up or shut up!!

We're informed voters and we approve this message..
Did you Obamaites ever notice you hate anyone that speaks against your messiah? Obama certainly sets the tone for it with his racist and sexist minions doing his dirty work for him, see Fr. Pfleger for the most recent example. It's hard to build a winning campaign around hate, and sooner or later it comes back to bite you in the behind.
Pat, huntington ny: '...The Repukes are painting Obama as a white flag waiver, and this is going to stick on him, and thus, he'll lose the general election...'

Wishful thinking on your part, Pat

It must be tough
Your candidate was 'inevitable',..
She had the name recognition, the money the party insiders....

Then the wheels fell off her little red wagon   ;-D
Too bad, Pat

If Hillary had voted AGAINST the Iraq War and Kyl-Lieberman......

She might have the nomination, right now

She ran a lousy campaign, staffed by her incompetent loyalists
She decided on loyalty over competence (Bush disease)

She ran up against a SUPERB candidate
TOUGH LUCK, Pat

The Clintonistas aren't afraid Obama will LOSE.....
They're afraid Obama will WIN....

That leaves Hillary shipwrecked.....
(and cuckolded)
Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, Pat

Sorry Hillary, character counts

Obama/Edwards '08
Honesty counts
Character counts

If you like George Bush ………
                                  … you’ll LOVE John McCain !!

John McCain, more of the same

John McCain, Endless War

Please don't hurt him, Hammer
..... uhhhhh I mean Obama

Please be kind to the mentally challenged, Obama !!

"The American people have had enough spin. Just this week, we were reminded by President Bush’s own former spokesman of how it was deception -- not straight talk -- that misled the American people into war."

So are we to assume that the deception was so compelling that a reasonable individual could have been tricked?  Was the vote cast by Kerry and Edwards the right vote to have cast within the context of a deceit?  Are you suggesting that neither would have voted for the war if they had been told the truth?  If so, I agree.

You are right.  The American people were deceived into going to war.  If they had been given the straight story.  But they were not and they overwhelmingly supported what they thought was the right thing to do.

And the same holds true for the rational behind Clinton's vote.

And of course you would not have voted for the war because when it gets right down to it you would agree with Rev. Wright and his "what goes around comes around" way of looking at forign policy.

It's a lame arguement.  Get off it.  It's this type of arguement that is going to put McCain in the White House.
I love it when we actually get a debate about policy!

Obama 08/12
Obama just scored a knockout!
McCain keeps saying we have to win in Iraq. He needs to be hammered on what "Winning" means, on how he plans on doing it, on how much it will cost both finacally and estimated casualty and wounded counts, on how long it will take and how long the results will last. He claims to have all this experience and knowlege, why then doen't he get specific about his 100 year plan.
SUPPORTING BIGGEST FOREIGN POLICY DISASTER AFTER VOTING FOR IT is only the job of a FOOL. No such fool should have any role in US admin, let alone become C-in-C
McCain's throwing up his pea soup!

To Be Voted OFF Your Rocker!
no understanding?  even I understand that if you pay grift or bribes, you get some semblance of results.  We still lost over 50 troops last month.  This is not a success by any measure.  And if he doesn't quit yelling at clouds about he will "never surrender,..." I am gonna' have to scream.  Seriously, don't you have to define the win before you define the loss?  This is a so completely ridiculous.  McCain is OUT OF TOUCH with Americans.  He sounds like Dick Cheney's "So!" when told Americans do not support this war.  It is now our LONGEST combat in the history of our country.  And for what?  The only way to support our troops is to bring them home.  Iraq will not stand up until we stand down.  I don't need McCain to tell me what I see in front of me.  McClellan has revealed what we've all known to be the truth, we were lied into this mess.  It will take a true outsider to get us out of it.  Define your 100 year war, McCain.  You are continuing the failed Bush policies on this, so I can only reason that you intend to continue the rest of his failed policies economically, diplomatically (said with a sneer) and on every other measurable front.  It is time for the American people to elect a government that represents OUR values, OUR policies and the things that matter to us.  Not your war mongering, pipe dreams that aren't grounded in fact or substance.
Pelosi, Reid, and Obama. The three Democrats that hate their country so much that they will purposly lose a war. What a pathetic party the Democrats have become.
On bookstands everywhere checkout the new book "How to go from straight-talk to double-talk and then to jibberish" By US Senator John McCain.
"Great Read" says Sean Hannity
"Do it live John, DO IT LIVE" says Bill O'Reilly
Exactly! This is why I support Obama. I am so sick of being lied to about the reason we invaded Iraq and about current conditions. Just tell us the truth, for heaven's sake. I still remember how the networks promoed the war with exciting graphics and music, as if it were the opening credits of an epic movie. I have felt lied to from the beginning.
Don't worry about anyone having to defend Barack Obama, seems like he can do just fine by himself!!

Hey McCainanites...help your boy get a CLUE!!

The BS is OVER!!

"Straight Talk" Indeed!!
"Alzheimer" McCain's mouth is the gift that keeps on giving.  Anyone making so many factual errors should never be allowed to run for president of the USA.  But then his many factual errors just proves that the conservative lunatic fringe has been wrong about everything and that's why our country is so screwed up for the past 7+ years.

The old broke man wanted Obama along so that Obama could pick up the tab and help the old geezer get around.  Nothing but a publicity stunt.  I salute Obama for not going to Iraq for so long because he's not wasting our tax dollars the way the grumpy old man has merely for his own political advantage.

Go Obama 08/12!
The war(s) were supposedly the one area where McCain had some knowledge....and now, he can't even get THAT right. Yikes.
Nice to see Capt Cut-and-Paste Smash is back.
Yeah.  The math is a bit fuzzy.

And uh, the logic is a bit... fuzzy.

And uh, the reportage is... yes, a bit fuzzy. (Is this news?)

Between David Gregory and Tom Brokaw this week, we now know that it is hard, it is really hard, being an honest journalist.

ya know?

A new book for defensive and patriotic (for dollars) journalists:

The Greatest Degeneration:  How we Knew it was Bad, but Liked the Money and Parties too Much (deeper shade of sotto)

or... Ducking Sniper Bullets in Georgetown: It's Hard to Be a Pimp

Obama just has the 'facts' on his side....

But McCain has the 'truthiness'

John McCain, Endless War
McFossil does not even know how to spell SURGE much less be able to define/comprehend what those levels are or OUGHT to be!

He is CLEARLY IN DENIAL. His unwillingness to ADMIT it is a CLEAR depiction for all of America that he, like bushmeister, feels that he is above correction on any level.

Saying what he did sent the message that he too is human and capable of being caught up in the campaign atmosphere. Being called out on it and acting like it is TRUE makes him a liar. A BOLD FACED LIAR.

McFossil needs to go on into an Altzheimer/Dimentia care ward for his retirement years.
To use a tennis term: ACE!

This is going to be a very good speech, that focuses more on the policy of what should be done. It also gives a great amount of contrast between the two candidates.

Simply put, brilliant.
I bet it's going to be hot and heavy at First Read tomorrow and Sunday.  Getting down to the final stretch and it's just a matter of waiting for the other shoe to drop so that we can all hear the Fat Lady sing the Blues to the pantsuited one!

I'm really looking forward to the next few days so that this primary farce can end and the real game is afoot.

Go Obama 08/12!
Yeh but what about that priest slamming Hillary, and the flag pin and all that other imporant stuff.
OOOOOH, Obamaaaa, that was cold!

Here come the smok'in red, head poppers!

Obama's got the sorry repubs number.

Gobama! All the way to January 09!
I agree. Lets stop the spin. Second, I am very disappointed with the catholic church. Considering all of the scandles of the catholic church they should be the last people to pass judgement on anyone. I am catholic and have been to church when priest are telling people who to vote for which is a violation of the letter from catholic bishops which states that priest cannot tell people who to vote for. The catholic church is very divisive and judge others harshly which has been a critism of the church. Where was the church when Geraldine Ferraro continues to make racist comments? I thought the catholic league stands up for civil rights.
