Michigan compromise passes

Posted: Saturday, May 31, 2008 7:10 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Ben Weltman
By a 19-8 vote, a compromise allocating Michigan's pledged delegates by a 69-59 forumla -- but counting each by just half a vote -- has just passed the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee.

The compromise will give Clinton 34.5 delegates and Obama 29.5 delegates. It would also seat all of Michigan's superdelegates but also give them just half a vote. Moreover, it would make the magic number to clinch the Democratic nomination 2,118.

But Clinton adviser and committee member Harold Ickes strongly disagreed with this compromise -- and said Clinton will reserve her right to take this dispute to the Democratic convention.

"This motion will hijack, hijack, remove four delegates won by Hillary Clinton and most importantly reflect the preferences of 600,000 Michigan voters. This body of 30 individuals has decided that they are going to substitute their judgment for 600,000 voters."

He noted sarcastically, "Now that's what I call democracy."

He went on to say, "Hijacking four delegates is not a good way to start down the path of party unity," he said, adding that Clinton reserves her right to take "this to credentials committee."

Adults do their job.
Chuck ...whats the total #s of delegates?
Please...
clear signal - ickey ickes and the witch are done... did anyone else notice the nasty woman on "her"side with their nonsense?
Ickes is sure the biggest loser today. It seems everything got in to Obama's favor. Funny the audiences keep screaming hahha. What a Chao event
Ickes is such a nut! If taking away four delegates is hijacking, why did he vote to take away ALL the delegates?
Woo Hoo!!  We can finally move on to the general election.  Good job, DNC Rules Committee!!
She's like Rasputin.  Hillary Rasputin.

The amount of poison she has spread throughout the party is incredible.  That woman is a cancer to the party. Ickes is just an embarrassment.
Welcome to the new and improved Democratic Party sponsored by RULES and LAW and FAIRNESS!
Finally! Sheesh! and get those chanting women out of there!
Today, Ickes proved to all of us that he cares more about himself and his candidate than party unity and having a democrat in November. His actions and the hissing in the crowd from the Clinton supporters whenever Obama's name was mention disgusts me. They don't represent the majority of the good people in the democratic party and I hope they don't blow it for us in November.
"A committee is a life form with six or more legs and no brain."

(Robert Heinlein)
Harold Ickes and Hillary Clinton wants to highjack this nomination.
Seems MORE than fair!
Well, it's based on Ickes performance today it's  clear now that the Clinton campaign will, in fact, tear the party apart in order to clear the way for Hillary in 2012. It's shameful.
Harold Ickes can take his hallow threats and the rest of Clintonazis and shove it. The way Clinton supporters behaved was sickening. So leave the party for all we care. The age of Obama is before us. Deal with it!
Harold Ickes is the past.

Let's move the party into this century and drop the dead weight from the party leadership.
Be quiet you reptile!  These 4 delegates were not Hillary's.  Prior to this meeting, Hillary and Obama each had ZERO delegates from Florida and Michigan by Ickes and the RBC who voted on this previously.  It is time to move on; the Obama camp made a large concession here today, and its time for the Clinton camp to do the same for the sake of the party and the country.  The parties now have unity, and its time for the Clinton camp to bring unify the voters they have so emphatically parsed.
Ickes, and his mercenary Amazonian goons look like nothing more than so-hooor lo-hooosers!!!!
I just wish this would be the last we hear of this.
An excellent set of compromises to seat both Florida and Michigan delegations!  It looks like we have a winner, Barack Obama!  My thanks to the committee for ignoring the herd mentality and getting the business done today and to First Read for keeping us informed.

Why are "Desperate" Hillary supporters such crybabies?  They don't want to accept reality that in Denver Barack Obama rules the party now.

Go Obama 08/12!
Ickes - SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP!  Repeat after me: IT'S OVER.  DONE.  FINITO.  You may now leave the building.

You helped disenfranchise those voters - now you can suffer the consequences.  Ha. Ha.
Someone get Russert a dry erase board. What's the math now?
How fitting that the Hillary supporters in the audience there acted like spoiled children whose parents wouldn't buy them the pony they wanted. Very reminiscent of Hillary herself.
Na Na Na Na, Na Na Na Na, Hey Hey - good bye.
That supporter of Hillary lost his brain somewhere and prefers division and greed over unity. He better be voting for John McCain if he truly wants another Bush presidency, because for him to say that the committee members have hijacked the delegates is to say that the majority voters who selected Obama and the small states he won don't really matter, which is his definition of democracy.
Note to Ickes: in a democracy, all candidates are listed on the ballot in a sanctioned election.  That was not the case in Michigan's primary this year.
I just heard Rachel Maddow's take on all this and I totally agree.  THis party needs to go forward WITHOUT the Clintons.  They've clearly signalled, with Ickes'help, that they do no care about the party that elevated them to greatness, that it's their way or the highway------Well ladies and gents, according to the majority of the DNC Rules Committee, it IS the highway.  Kindly shut the door on your way out, all you who disagree, and we will WIN WITHOUT YOU
Any bets that Clinton does take it to the convention in order to ensure that she can run in 2012? This meeting more than anything proves that Clinton's only interest is her own aggrandizement, position, and power. To watch Harold Ickes who himself voted to strip Floridan and Michigan of ALL their delegates with all his bombast suggest that this decision was taking delegates away when they never were allocated because the primary didn't count was sickening. Hopefully Clinton superdelegates who care for party and country more than Clinton's personal ambition will abandon her if she does seek to appeal to the credentials committee.
Just an observation: Most of the Clinton supports looked post-menopausal.

Just an observation.
Ickes, and his mercenary Amazonian goons look like nothing more than so-hooor lo-hooosers!!!!

Denver!! Denver!! Denver!!

DROP DEAD!!
Ickes is an idiot. As was said by one of the committee members Ickes was using political posturing. The delegates will seat and be in the convention. It is wrong to not recognize his vote to strip the delegates and now is reversing his vote and saying that Obama receive no votes in MI. Ickes point is highjacking the election in assuming the uncommitted delegates should not count and only Hillary votes. This is disenfranchsing the uncommitted voters. Second, it is polticial suicide for Clinton to go to the credential committee after she has said that she will respect the decision of the MI and FL state democrats and the rules committee. If she does not follow through with her word, it shows that she is in the election for herself and not the voters as well as having a fair process.
Let her and her Hillary Land supporters follower her to Denver. Today proves the Clintons do not rule everything like they would like to think they do!

Obama 08/012
I think its time to leave the democratic party. The Michigan ruling was completely unjust. Obama the electioneer who plays this way, is just doing it again, like he did with Alice Palmer. Obama stole this election and hillary supporters will not vote for a candidate who unjustly did this. He's arrogant enough to say that he was generous. Disgusting.
I just watched the votes on TV.  I am increasingly amazed by how Hilary Clinton's supporters can be as rude as they were in the meeting.  For Sen. Clinton to continue her ridiculous contentions that she still should be the nominee, even though there is no way for her to win, amazes me.  Newsflash to the Clintons...it's over, deal with it.  There is a process in this country for electing our candidates.  We've followed the process, and you've lost.  It is the bottom of the ninth, you are behind, and guess what, you are not the home team.  The game is over.
Harold Ickes is a PAID member of the Clinton campaign.  I think that sitting on a DNC committee is a conflict of interest for PAID campaign members, as it shows that member can not make decisions with rules and voter interests, but can only make decisions based on the candidate's interests.

This is NOT about HILLARY CLINTON> This is about seating MI and FL.  BTW...Clinton supporters disrupted this entire voting process yelling and screaming at the committee members.  How RUDE!

AND - this "hijacking MI 600,000 votes" is just spin.  You'll see.  If that were the case, it wouldn't have passed with overwhelming support.
"He noted sarcastically, 'Now that's what I call democracy.'"

I would suggest... Yes, now that's what we all can call democracy... no sarcasm intended at all.
the clinton campaign's hypocrisy and destructive manipulation reached nauseating heights today.  how embarrassing for her....

i voted for uncommitted in michigan, my wife did not vote because it would not count. we are the ones who would have been disenfranchised by awarding clinton the full delegates not the other way around!
I am sorry to say this, bit Harold Ickes appeared to be a bit drunk. His appearence was dishevled and his words at times unclear. I hope I'm wrong and he was just tired and worn out (a common Clinton excuss). Also, I hope Clinton supporters get a chance to see how they conducted themselves. It was embarassing to say the least.

You're a MERCENARY-you don't know what DEMOCRACY is.
You'd rather substitute the 600,000 for all those who didn't vote based on what your candidate signed off on along with all others. THAT doesn't bother you. Or SHOCK you. Because it works for HER.

MI seems happy-this is what they wanted. I don't see the FBI being called in for this 'hijacking'

Enjoy your last hurrah in PR.
This committee has indeed "hijacked" votes by replacing the actual votes with the committee's opinions (aligned by candidate!).  Very sad!
This clown is the very definition of a hypocrite. Sign off on the penalty and then cry bloody murder when it turns against you. What a joke.
Maybe if they had not run their campaign like a high school student council election they would not be in the situation they are in. Frankly with the economy in the shape its in the current state of the Clinton campaign does not bode well for their ability to manage a budget.
What's the over/under on Hillary declaring as an Independent? I'm guessing Wednesday.
I think it was a fair outcome and it is time to move ahead and prepare for the fall campaign against McCain. Not everyone will be happy, but the rules were broken and this is the remedy.
Yeah Barak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1, Ickes Tried To Hijack The Votes. It Is Done Finally.Let Hillary Try As She Might Bring It To The Credentials. She Will Still Be Shut Down.Move Over There Is A New Sherriff In Town, Thank Goodness
Are we really going to throw the entire Democratic Party and our chance at winning the White House down the tubes for 4 delegates that the Clinton campaign wants?

People have really gotten too caught up in their candidate and not the big picture goal of winning the White House and taking control of the congress and senate. Party unity must come first now. It's time to heal, and move on and focus on the Republicans.

This is our future, not the World Series.
Ickes throws down the dagger.
He is setting the tone for the clinton campaign.

what a selfish crybaby.
our nation deserves a dem...ANY dem at this point would be better than McC.

Ickes was reprimanded for swearing in his speech. And like a child being punished, goes on to say that "we remain the right to contest in denver.

Classic!!
"Delegates count is meaningless, Popular vote count is what matters for nomination" is hillary next battle cry.....just watch. Anything to bend the rules her way. .....Pathetic
we all better prepare ourselves for the growing chant..."Obama & his supporters steal the nomination".....God help us all......just a second thought though...why are "whites" called bigots for not voting for Obama yet blacks who vote at a rate close to 94% voting for Obama are not bigots? If the facts are analyzed......the percentage of "whites" that vote for obama is disproportionate racilally speaking....making the real unspoken topic "blacks who won't vote for Hillary are bigots"...........*shrugs shoulders* just a thought i'd likne seen discussed....but no one dares....therefore creating an example of actual reverse racism
