Michigan compromise passes

Posted: Saturday, May 31, 2008 7:10 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Ben Weltman
By a 19-8 vote, a compromise allocating Michigan's pledged delegates by a 69-59 forumla -- but counting each by just half a vote -- has just passed the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee.

The compromise will give Clinton 34.5 delegates and Obama 29.5 delegates. It would also seat all of Michigan's superdelegates but also give them just half a vote. Moreover, it would make the magic number to clinch the Democratic nomination 2,118.

But Clinton adviser and committee member Harold Ickes strongly disagreed with this compromise -- and said Clinton will reserve her right to take this dispute to the Democratic convention.

"This motion will hijack, hijack, remove four delegates won by Hillary Clinton and most importantly reflect the preferences of 600,000 Michigan voters. This body of 30 individuals has decided that they are going to substitute their judgment for 600,000 voters."

He noted sarcastically, "Now that's what I call democracy."

He went on to say, "Hijacking four delegates is not a good way to start down the path of party unity," he said, adding that Clinton reserves her right to take "this to credentials committee."

What's in your heart comes out of your mouth.

Mr. Ickes has every right to express himself, as do those in the gallery, however objectionable others may find it.  They revealed the anger and frustration that must be soothed and not inflamed if Democrats are to win in November.

Our grandkids will read about this in the history books.  We certainly live in interesting times.

Ickes, Wolfson, McAuliffe, the Clintons and many of Kool-Aid drinkers have been hijacking logic and good sense since before South Carolina. Their personal avarice is apparently more important than winning in November. If they don't want to unify then the party should move on without them.
Ickes is a slimeball loyal to whomever is signing his paycheck.  He is NOT interested in the unity of the Democratic Party, following the rules, democracy (as an uncommitted voter, don't take away my vote by only allowing Clinton to get votes in MI, Harold!) and does not seem interested in seeing the Dems win this November.  Otherwise, how else would he be able to cash in on Hillary running again in 2012?!?
votes should not count
There is no doubt that unless Hillary got exactly what she wanted - all the delegates for her with full voting rights and absolutely none for Obama she will continue to take this all the way to the convention.

She's not for party unity and if the Dems lose in November it will be entirely her fault.  I'm sure the Republicans will dance in the streets at the prolonged fight which will now continue until August.
How does this guy, Ickes, tell me that my uncommitted vote for Obama, and did not write his name in because I was tole it would not count, does not acrue to my candidate, OBAMA?
Hillary, whiner to the end!

And the only thing that REALLY matters,
  is NOVEMBER.
Don't like Hillary should get all that belong to her.
A committee held rules to be more important than people.

We deserve to lose.

Welcome to the White House, Mr. McCain

That's right Margaret. Have'nt you ever heard of hellfire, or even prison, (if you are an atheist)?

People do not take precendence over order.
Yes Mr. Ickes...why is there dissent in the party now? Who started this? Your candidate agreed to rules but when she saw she wasn't winning by those rules decided to change them mid-game so she can possibly cheat her way into winning! I can't stand the thought of anyone in the Clinton campaign acting all sanctimonious!! They're all dishonorable! A bunch of cheaters who have no regard for the party nor the country. Why would we want to put forth that sort of classless untrustworthiness as a leader of the free world? What nation would trust her were she in the Oval office? NONE!

HRC has ruined the Clinton legacy for so many who were Clinton supporter/loyalists. Yeah she still has her fans but she's lost many as well.
Hahahahahahahaha!!!  Ickes is such a funny guy.  I mean really Harold, who is hijacking who here?  And the line about that committee "substituting their judgment for the judgment of 600,000 voters of Michigan"?  Where was THAT logic when HE was arguing that not only SD's but pledged delegates could go against the judgment of THEIR voting public and pick Hillary.

Ladies and gentlemen, even the Hillary supporters on the RBC know that Clinton and Ickes are out of their minds.  Look closely at Harold Ickes and his lying, disingenous countenance and know that THAT is going to be in our White House, helping to make decisions in this country that will affect YOU.  But only if you matter to the Clintons on any particular, given day.

Women for Obama.
None of this drama erases two facts:  (1)Where was all this feigned outrage from the Clinton people when Florida and Michigan were "defrocked" back in August 2007?; and (2) No matter what happened today, she still doesn't have the numbers to win.  She needs to get out!
Harold Ickes: WAH!!!!! I need a diaper change.
Very impressive Clinton delegation in attendance at the DNC meeting today. They were desperately CLINGING to their nutcrackers and jockstraps.
Ickes wanted to give zero MI delegates to Obama.  He tried to hijack all 55 uncommitted MI delegates.  How's that for democracy?

Clinton's campaign wants to risk four years of McCain because of a loss of 4 delegates?  Puhleeze!
Harold Ickes needs to respect the rules. If he and hes candidate had followed the rules the first time arond, we wouldnt have had this situation.....
19 to 8 in favor of the Michigan proposal, Senator Levin needs to be praised for his stand for his state.  If Hillary Clinton takes this dispute to the Democratic convention, she will show what I have always believed, say anything, do anything to split our party and allow John McCain to win, because Hillary did not get her way.  I am very please with the DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee, they did the right thing and show some backbone.  There is hope for our party and our Country.  MSNBC First read, great job.
Take it to the convention.  One of the rules the committee is deciding not to follow is no vote for one candidate can be transfered to another.  Uncommitted can not be transfered to Obama or anyone else.  Talk about making up the rules to suit the needs of the Obama camp.  This is a joke!  So much for unity.
===================================================

What a ridiculous point of view you have.  The rules also said that the votes wouldn't count at all in those states, and all candidates agreed not to campaign there.  Hillary even said she knew the votes wouldnt' count.  She was the only name on the ballot in MI, many voters stayed home because they knew their votes didn't count.  Now she is changing her tune clawing at anything she can, although she has lost the popular vote and lost in the amount of states won.  There can be only one candidate, and unfortunately I think this proves she isn't going to be the one.  Its time to rally behind the winner, and acknowledge that Hillary is a brilliant person and a heck of a competitor.
Honestly?  This compromise was as fair as fair could be.  On to November.
My suggestion to everyone in DC- STAY OFF THE STREETS! Ickes is in town and since things did not go the way he wanted I am sure he will hit the sauce right away!

He already looked drunk!
Big surprise. Who didn't think she'd make this a fight at the Convention if she didn't get her way?
If she can't get the nomination, she's willing to tear the DNP apart and hand the WH to McSame. The Crazy Train just keeps rollin' along....
Harold Ickes's last word made me sick!   I am deeply disturbed by his words and comments.  It is bad as much as the GOP politics.
He doesn't represents us !   This is why people are so tired of our political game.  We don not need person like him to represent the party.  He should not be there in the first place.

Shame on you Harold Ickes !
Like him should be no place for our life and our society.
Yes people in MI voted, but the state party broke the rules. Period. There's a penalty for this. It's funny a couple of weeks ago how Terry McAullife was showing signs of a willingness to compromise (I believe it was on MSNBC or CBS). He specifically said that a 50% compromise would be OK with him, especially since HE was in charge of the Democratic Party 4 years ago and knows how these rules are supposed to be applied in situations such as this one. Harold Ickes has a different approach to this apparently. Either he and Mrs. Clinton get what they want, or they'll sink the ship and everyone goes down with them. Yeah... that's what I call democracy.
Hillary has proved, to me, by her change of will and
interference with the Rules of the Democratic party, that she could not be trusted with the job of president of this great nation. She seems to believe in situation rules.
Harold Ickes is a horses a** and I'm glad he was shut up and humiliated.  Now lets move on!
after harold ickes comment, "Clinton reserves her right to take "this to credentials committee," confirms sen. clinton's intention to do all she can to ensure sen. obama comes out of the convention a weakened candidate. as they have repeatedly shown, they do not ask permission but will ask forgiveness; however, i do not think those of us supporting sen. obama, including the african american community, will  give it.
Spanked!!!!!!

Nah, Nah, Nayyyyhhh, Nah.
Nah, Nah, Nayyyyhhh, Nah.
Hey, haaay, Hey.
Say Goodbye!!!!!

The day after election day, the purge is on.

The DNC and party in general MUST be purged of every last vestige of Clintonism.
Ickes does not deserve to be seated on that committee. Listening to him today made it pretty clear he is only interested in whats best for the clinton campaign and not what's best for the party...let alone whats morally right.

A couple of more days and this will all be over. YOU HAD BETTER CONCEDE CLINTON WANTS OBAMA WINS THE NOMINATION
Ickes-----YOU'RE AN IDIOT.  What you got was a gift, reguardless of what you think and say.  Go ahead and take it to the convention, then McNutt will get the POTUS.  Then we can all sit back and blame YOU and YOU alone.  HRC won't get the nod in 2012 if that is what you are thinking, if you know how to. Get a life and get out of the race NOW,,,,YOU IDIOT
I had a good time today. I believe the rest of this election cycle will be just as exciting, and amazing!

Chuck Todd said it best; our party no longer belongs to the Clintons!!

Free at last, free at last, thank G-D Almighty, we are free at last!!!
Ickes has been doing his level best to make a complete mockery of himself and his position on that committee.

It's been embarrassing and reprehensible to watch.
Superior dance. Superior dance.

Heeeeee. Heeeee. Heeeee!!!!!

She's fried muskrat now.

The deal is, she thought she had the votes on the committee.

What she had was Harold Ickes and 3-5 more True Believers.  And a carefully constructed partisan audience there to make noise.

So it came to pass, 19-8.

She thought she had the votes.

She still thinks that somewhere out there are people who know she should be president in the same way she and Harold know.

She thought she had the votes.

But she doesn't.

Not anymore.

Neither Obama or Clinton will have enough pledged delegates for the nomination.  Obama will come out slightly ahead in pledged delegates, and Clinton will come out slightly ahead in the popular vote.  Neither of those secures the nomination.  Instead, it is a back-room deal among Democratic Party bigwigs who which will determine the nominee.  And they will choose the candidate with no experience and a history of terrible judgment in who he has chosen as his closest companions (oh, wait, he just threw them all under the bus today - he just resigned from Trinity!)  The Dem bigwigs will choose the blatant politician who has been telling us for a year that he is not a blatant politician like all those others, and hope that the magic dust in America's eyes will continue to blind them for 5 more months, so they can sneak in their utterly unqualified Svengali.  Clinton has been treated like second-hand dirt, as have the voters of Florida and Michigan.  I guess the bigwigs preferred that to the race riots that would ensue if they decide to nominate Clinton (popular vote winner) instead.  No spine, no integrity, no decency.
Now, you must see how H. Clinton tried to go back and forth, using her own violation of the rules to benefit herself, now that she is losing the nomination. At the beginning when she agreed to the rules, she said Michigan did not count. Now, she switches it up. What a bold faced liar and betrayer.

Shame on Hillary Clinton!!! We cannot have someone like this in the White House - again.
