McCain: 'Never count a Clinton out'

Posted: Monday, June 02, 2008 6:37 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Hillary Clinton isn’t the only one insisting that she shouldn’t be counted out.

At the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., today, John McCain fielded a question from a woman who noted the Arizona senator’s harsh words for -- almost exclusively -- Barack Obama

“At least, officially, Hillary Clinton is still in the race,” the questioner pointed out.

McCain responded by launching into a particularly effusive paragraph of praise for the New York senator, noting her groundbreaking candidacy in the Democratic primary.

“Yes, Sen. Clinton is still in the race,” he agreed, going on to say that “she has inspired generations of American women to believe that they can reach the highest office in this nation.”

Although she faces swirling rumors of an impending campaign disintegration, McCain said today that her political brand shouldn’t be underestimated.

"A few of us who have been around politics for a while learned a lesson way back in 1992 that you better never count a Clinton out of any race,” McCain said.

The presumptive GOP nominee often has kind words for the candidate once viewed as the inevitable nominee of the Democratic Party. Particularly in recent days, he has sometimes gone out of his way to praise her tenacity and resilience. He even made the somewhat unusual move of calling to congratulate her after her recent win in the West Virginia primary.

His description of Clinton has not always been rosy. In the early days of the primary season, McCain used her once-proposed appropriation of funds for a Woodstock musuem as one of the jokey centerpieces of his crusade against government waste. (He famously joked that he “was tied up at the time” of the 1969 iconic concert. It even inspired one of his TV commercials.) And in the bitter coldness of his lonely treks through Iowa, McCain gleefully hammered her for stating that a progress report on Iraq from General David Petraeus required “a willing suspension of disbelief.”

Not so today. When McCain mentioned last year’s flap over Petraeus’ testimony, his indignation was reserved for Obama alone. He mentioned Obama’s refusal to vote on a highly political senate resolution to condemn an anti-Petraeus ad run at the time by liberal group MoveOn.org.

“It's hard to understand why Sen. Obama would not vote in favor of a resolution that condemns an advertisement by a far, far left liberal organization that questions Gen. Petraeus' patriotism,” he said today.

No mention of Clinton, who voted against the measure outright.

Sure, John, why not stir the pot a little more?  Clinton is down and will be out come tomorrow.  That is unless you plan to add her to your own ticket . . .
I hope everyone knows by now that Senator Kennedy's surgery was a success. We need to continue to pray for him. (Excuse me, McCain and Clinton for interrupting your story.)
I just read where there are negotiations for Obama to help clinton with her debt.  If it will get her quiet and make her tell her supporters to support Obama--them let him.  I have given money to his campaign and I would not vote for clinton--but if this will bring peace in the party and help her supporters feel better, then fine.   On McCain, I question his, Patraeus and Bush's patriotism.  They are allowing our soliders to die.  This war was for personal ego and personal wealth of Bush/Cheney. They should be impeached and Patraeus also if that fits.
Hey, no comments from the peanut gallery, McCain. When we're ready to talk to you, we will look at you. Let us deal with internal affairs, and THEN we'll talk to you... and defeat you.

You're about as relevant to Hillary v. Obama as a baseballer would be to a Kings v. Lakers game.
Do I hear a McCain/Clinton ticket in the works here?????

http://www.politivine.com
We all know that by this time tomorrow Sen. Barack Obama will be the Dem.nominee. I've always been tought that it's just as important to be a graceful  winner as it is to be a graceful loser. I hope we can find the class and to move on to the general and let the past anger go.
McCain is hoping it will be Hillary he will be facing.  The Repugs are giving her all the help they can.  Obama will show him to be the fool that he is.
"Nice shoes you got on there, homes. Lemme borrow a dollar."

"Nice pantsuit you got on there, Hilly. Lemme borrow some supporters"

I wonder why McCain's going out of his way to butter her up... I can think of 17 million reasons.

DON'T FALL FOR IT.
.  If it will get her quiet and make her tell her supporters to support Obama--them let him
*******
Sorry, Elect Senator Obama, sure there are many, many millions of Clinton supporters who won't be "told" what to do.  Unlike Obamatons, we do have a mind of our own.  I will NEVER, EVER, EVER vote for Obama.
Just like the Clintons, he has nowhereto go but down with his style of politics.
This is not the McCain of 2000. He is a total sellout to lunatic fringe. More war, more spending, more ideology and worse economy.
McCain is a lying hypocrit.

He admires Hillary alright.

That is why he made that filthy joke about Janet Reno being Chelsea's father.

He wants to contest with Hillary in the GE so badly, that he has turned himself into a bold faced liar to help her pathetic, dead in the water, campaign for the nomination.
OMG. Does no one see this for what it is. He wants all the "Harriet Christian" votes, so he's gonna say nice things about "their girl". Then they'll feel better about betraying their party and voting for him.  He is shameless, just like HRC. Maybe he should offer her His V.P. slot!!
now you people see how scared mcsame is of running against obama.still wants clinton to win''.
This should be an eye opener to the rabid HRC supporters who say "We will vote for McSame in 2008". HRC and Mc Same have run these campaigns in unison to accomplish their goals with little regard for ethical or practial concerns. Do what you must but remember you will pay the price in many areas, Supreme Court appointments, prolonged war in Iraq and bom bom bom Iran to mention just a few.
The Republicans are scared to face Obama. It's obvious that they would rather have sen Clinton.
The opposite of momentum is dementum.
If McCain is s sure that Hillary would make a great president, then he should step aside and let her have it!  Or take her as his Vice President...she is younger than him!  Yeah, right!  He is just enjoyng the Democratic battle!
I remain against Sen. Obama helping Hillary fundraise away her campaign debt.

The Clintons raised a ton of money and spent it unwisely.  Why on earth would anyone give her more?  It blows my mind.

Hillary will have a multi-zillion dollar book deal when this is all over - she will be fine.  She grew the debt, she can pay it off herself.
Listen at this Jerk trying to suck up to hillary's supporters I know he has heard theat many of them said that they would vote for him before they vote for a ---- man. Well so what let them I am a 55 year old ----- women and I started of voting for hillary and then she became increasingly distasteful in her campingn so I sat on the fence and took a while to listen to the other candidates. I listen to Obama and I listened to Mccain. My choice was the man with intergrity
McCain talking about a stupid TV ad compared to actually helping veterans.  Everyone should know that officers and noncommissioned officers are forbidden from speaking out against their leadership.  It's the creed.  So even if Petreus wanted to tell them to go fly a kite, he couldn't and the military officers who did, were forced to retire.
McBush is a phony who have lost his way!
Thanks Billary - you gave McBush a prime opportunity to pander to your supporters.  Should Obama lose - you will NEVER win the Democratic nomination.  You are an embarassment to the Democratic party
As a young man in the army and in the war front firing line. I always knew deep down in my heart that one day this war will be over. Everything with a begining has an end, I told myself. I never wondered if I would live to see the end but I waited patiently for it. Then one day it came and that's long ago. So will the Hillary nightmare. There would be one more long yapping from her at the Convention, then , just like it began it would be gone for good. Just one day.
ONE real possibility is that Clinton will suspend her campaign on Tuesday or Wednesday, but will not endorse Obama, hoping that something happens before the convention.  If Clinton refuses to campaign for Obama this summer what on earth will the party do?
You meant to say "can almost reach the highest nomination in this nation?"
I would like to compare this primary to a baseball game...it's the bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, Obama is up by 10 runs but Hillary is arguing with the umpire that she has more hits in the game and therefore she should win, even after the last out is made she will still be arguing she should of won the game she had more hits. The lagacy of Bill Clinton is destroyed and I am loving that Obama rules the party now.
Does John McCain know something we don't?
This has got to be it for hillbillary, McWar sounds as if he is endorsing her. Can hillbillary sink any lower before she has to admit the truth, she has lost big time. This is really to sad to watch anymore, she has no self resect left, just her blind ambition to be potus. I want her to go away, but I feel sorry for her because she can't seem to face the truth of the situation.
Funny how more times than not McCain and the Clintons have given each other a pat on the back and thumbs up on "experience" yet all 3 have constantly touted Obama's lesser "experience" with malious pride. John "Can't tell Shiite From Sunni" McCain I expect such Roveness from...the others...my point being that obviously McCain will have be taught the same lesson the Clintons were...don't underestimate potential and overrate "experience". So far experience has us 4,000 deaths in Iraq and counting.
McCain is stirring up the pot to try to steer the Hillary women to vote for him.  Hillary needs to come out strong for the unity ticket and this issue should be minimalized.  The sooner this happens then the full brunt of the Democratic candidate can be brought to bear.
"So the Gop Blasts Obabma, Clinton is still in it, whatever...
And so the GOP offers solutions to the world!"
What the GOP is offering to the world is our businesses/jobs to China, India etc....
… and war to sovereign countries…
the economic death of tha American middle class…
record profits to big business along with record tax breaks…
less and less quality education and no chance for  fair and balanced health care!

"Solutions to the world," when America is less favored by more countries than we can remember!

You don’t destroy subversion with the fist you destroy subversion with education, jobs and equality!
This is what a true democracy does; a Democracy only goes to war when all other options are exhausted! Any person that lives in a true Democracy knows this!

Bottom line…
9-11 happened under GOP watch…
The Iraq war was forced upon our nation through GOP duplicity and subversion…
Afghanistan, the real war, is still unfinished!
The economy is on the fritz…
And now a new possible larger war looms due to GOP diplomatic failures, Iran!

These are current unresolved issues and problems all created under GOP tenure!

JOHN “Who?”
McCain should just drop out.  He's obviously not too bright and is in way over his head.
I will vote for Mc Cain before I vote for Obama...for the first time in my life I may actually vote for a Republican.  Obama should keep his money, he will not buy Clinton's supporters votes..at least not this one!
Obviously, he is saying nice things about Clinton now because he's heard that a small group of her supporters has vowed to switch parties and vote for McCain if McCain is the nominee.

Savvy, McCain. But you're still going to lose the general.
Sen.McCain has for weeks focused on Sen.Obama and wants to win Sen.Clinton's supporters votes. Once the democratic primary is over, all the democrats will be united when faced with the policy differences. Independents and Republicans would join us too.

He's only nice to you when you're losing.

He and the GOP don't know when to strike out at something and when not to. They are like buckshot blasting away when it's appropriate and when not.
They are already sounding shrill.
Just like learning how to speak, John McCain needs to learn how to count.  Clinton math is the simplest of all, Hillary lost no matter how you count her out.
Who wants to listen to the crazy old man howling at the moon?
This is rich.... Maybe you want to make her your VP now Johnny Boy.  Get a life... I realize you aren't the brightest lightbulb in the box (Sunni vs. Shia) but I would think even you know that people will see right through this.
KEEP FIGHTING HILLARY - ALL THE WAY TO THE CONVENTION.

Note to the ARROGANT obama group:  The only thing obama may STEAL is the nomination - without the MILLIONS of Hillary supporters - he will never win the white house.

Dems lose - again!

HILLARY  OR MCCAIN    NEVER  obama
McCain/Clinton08

Talk about getting stomped!
I hope that she is out... I do not want Clinton to win!
I proudly label myself a feminist and Hillary Clinton has not inspired me.  Just the opposite, her behavior has disgusted me.

She continues to totally mislead her supporters and the rest of the nation when she claims she is winning in the popular vote catagory.  On her website it now appears that she is including estimates for the caucas states.  However she is giving herself 55% of the Michigan votes and Barack Obama ZERO.  All this while she goes on and on about reflecting the will of the voters & not having the Superdelegates go against that.  As if no individual in the entire state of Michigan supports Barack Obama.

Give me a break !!  Let's be real clear about this last fact.  It is the Clinton camp who is asking the Superdelegates to overturn the will of the people.

I guess Hillary Clinton has shown me equality with males in one area.  Just like many male politicians, she will spin the facts however she can to make herself look better, no matter the consequences.
Oh, of course he's pandering to Clinton supporters now because he wants to get and keep the votes of those who say, "If Hillary doesn't get the nomination, I'm voting for McCain".  What obvious political pandering.  I, for one, do not want his joker anywhere near the White House.

If he loves Hillary so much, why wasn't she invited along with his VP short list, to his holiday weekend barbeque?
That would be McCain's Christmas in June wish list ... I only hope he is underestimating Clinton's dedication to the Democratic
We don't want a Zebra in the White House Hillary or  Ron Paul would be better then McCain
Mcsame has been wrong on almost every issue of importance since 2000... he is wrong on this one too
Hillary might not be the democratic nominee but never forget behind every man stands a great woman. And she is is a great women(Hillary Clinton). It takes a special woman to show others  we can be equal to men or sometimes even better.
Clinton is gone; despite McCain's and her efforts to make appear the weaker candidate. Americans are not as forgetful as you.

McCain himself, has been quite skillful at creating disaster as a potential bomb. Obama is in your face because…

78% democratic, 48% think talking to Ahmadinejad is better that war.

At least Obama knows there are 150,000 troops in Iraq.

Mortgage industry lobbyist

Obama knows who are the enemies.

Wall Street lobbyist (we Americans are not the stock exchanged).

Obama doesn't forget import issues.

Bodies coming home in bags or injured

No GI bill

Bush tax cuts

Oil prices have affected the economy (McCain acknowledges he doesn’t know anything about).

“It's hard to understand why Sen. Obama would not vote in favor of a resolution that condemns an advertisement by a far, far left liberal organization that questions Gen. Petraeus' patriotism,”

****

Oh I dont know, McCain...but freedom of speech comes to mind, you freeking dolt.  Or are we no longer allowed opinions in a post Bush America.
