McCain: 'Never count a Clinton out'

Posted: Monday, June 02, 2008 6:37 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Hillary Clinton isn’t the only one insisting that she shouldn’t be counted out.

At the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn., today, John McCain fielded a question from a woman who noted the Arizona senator’s harsh words for -- almost exclusively -- Barack Obama

“At least, officially, Hillary Clinton is still in the race,” the questioner pointed out.

McCain responded by launching into a particularly effusive paragraph of praise for the New York senator, noting her groundbreaking candidacy in the Democratic primary.

“Yes, Sen. Clinton is still in the race,” he agreed, going on to say that “she has inspired generations of American women to believe that they can reach the highest office in this nation.”

Although she faces swirling rumors of an impending campaign disintegration, McCain said today that her political brand shouldn’t be underestimated.

"A few of us who have been around politics for a while learned a lesson way back in 1992 that you better never count a Clinton out of any race,” McCain said.

The presumptive GOP nominee often has kind words for the candidate once viewed as the inevitable nominee of the Democratic Party. Particularly in recent days, he has sometimes gone out of his way to praise her tenacity and resilience. He even made the somewhat unusual move of calling to congratulate her after her recent win in the West Virginia primary.

His description of Clinton has not always been rosy. In the early days of the primary season, McCain used her once-proposed appropriation of funds for a Woodstock musuem as one of the jokey centerpieces of his crusade against government waste. (He famously joked that he “was tied up at the time” of the 1969 iconic concert. It even inspired one of his TV commercials.) And in the bitter coldness of his lonely treks through Iowa, McCain gleefully hammered her for stating that a progress report on Iraq from General David Petraeus required “a willing suspension of disbelief.”

Not so today. When McCain mentioned last year’s flap over Petraeus’ testimony, his indignation was reserved for Obama alone. He mentioned Obama’s refusal to vote on a highly political senate resolution to condemn an anti-Petraeus ad run at the time by liberal group MoveOn.org.

“It's hard to understand why Sen. Obama would not vote in favor of a resolution that condemns an advertisement by a far, far left liberal organization that questions Gen. Petraeus' patriotism,” he said today.

No mention of Clinton, who voted against the measure outright.

John MCcain was a failured in the war in VietNam That why he ended up at MIA presented for 5 years, because lacked of flying the fighter plan.  VietNam does't have any messill or newclear war head to bring the fighter plan down, it like MCcain screwed up. big time
Texas, humman right.
I think McCain should pick Dole as a VP.  They're both pathetic idiots and couldn't beat my three year old in an arm wrestling match.
Curiously, if HRC were to somehow pull this nomination off, how is McCain going to go after her w/o eating his nice words? He should be a little careful just incase. He better be prepared be nice t HRC or you know what happens. Is she going to yell sexism if she were to run against him? Is she gonna act the same way she did during the primaries. Kicking, screaming and protesting her way to the WH? He brought it across w/the 1992 comment sounding like don't cross the Clintons. I don't want someone in the WH like that.
If Senator Obama does decide to help Clinton with her debts it will be through fundraising designated specifically for that purpose.  His is not allow to use the regular donations he has raised for this.

However I am very disturbed because it looks like Hillary will try to declare victory tomorrow night based on her version of the popular vote numbers and she will suggest that unless superdelegates vote for her they will be overturning the will of the voters.
The Clinton campaign does not care that the primary votes in FL and MI were tainted due to 'voter supression' and 'supression of voter choice' causing the results of both primaries to be less than a "true and fair represenation of the will of the voters'.  And they don't care that caucuses cannot be appropriately compared or accounted for when trying to determine a popular vote for all states.
I hope that the superdelegates will endorse Senator Obama en mass tomorrow and bring this to a close.
I read where a few Generals opted not to be considered for Gen.Petraeus job. You might consider those Generals, at lest to some extent, to be less than fully patriotic.  Afterall, they became military men to serve.  Gen. Petraeus took on a nearly impossible task and has probably done as well or better than anyone else could have. As for the vote on the resolution condemning Moveon.rrg's ad, the article mentions that it was "highly political."  I don't know why Obama didn't vote to condemn it, but I probably woundn't have voted either.  First, Gen.Patreous is, of course, patriotic.  Secondly,  MoveOrg is free to do what they want in a free country. They should have had more important things to work on and think about rather be asked to straddle a stupid idea.
I don't think Obama should help Clinton pay her campaign debt.  Why should he?  Because she lost.  Others lost, too.  Others dropped out because thye lacked the funds to continue. Obama doesn't owe her because she hung in to the bitter end.  If it's a custom or something like that, then maybe.  But, otherwise, I don't get it.
ANOTHER GOOD REASON NOT TO VOTE FOR JOHN MCCAIN.

MCCAIN IS MUCH TOO OF A LAPDOG TO HILLARY.

------------------------------------------------------
Oh so McSame is playing to Clinton supports in an 'look at me, I'm really Clinton's friend, vote for me instead of that mean Mr Obama,' What a load of you-know-what! After he made such tasteless jokes as 'Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Her father is Janet Reno!' true Clinton supporters will see thru McSame's lies and support Obama if he wins.
I believe Hillary will be around and very noticeable when Obama wins because I am sure he will include her in a position which will please her  and which will be productivein the government and add to her future political status, should she exit with feminine grace soon and support the ticket which now seems to be set. Yes, she has been around more years than Barack, but he is pretty sensitive and subtle and  seems intelligent enough to surround himself with the most able and experienced folks and to exercise good judgment.  He has shown he is secure within himself and can take  nasty smears without getting rattled and handle difficult situations with grace.

As for what McCain says, let him say it.  The nasties among the Republican campaigners haven't really started yet but they will. I do hope the Democrats don't sink to that smear swiftboat lying level! McCain does not seem  at all consistent on very much thus far.  Exactly what is he advocating consistently except continuing the war????And why should diplomacy which has existed throughout American history-i.e. negotiating with hostile nations--be such an evil thing to him?  I think Bush was against it because he put his foot in his mouth every time he opened it, which is ok with friends, but not so good with the unfriendly!  So "If you don't like me, I am not speaking to you"  ...that smacks of about 3rd grade, doesn't it?????  Dreadfully immature.

By the way, I am an 82 year old advantaged white female who is not supposed to be for Obama.  But I am also Independent!
THE BIGGEST MISSED OPPORTUNITY BY THE MSM, Pres Bush desire to 'show up' his dad's foreign policy decision on Iraq, rather basing it on anything half way sensible, logical or ethical.... what better way to validate that personal grudge with Dad than to show 9/11 as cause for war and revenge; blind ambition and ego is what drove Bush, not the weapons of mass destruction.
Hillary Chaos Clinton still McSame's best hope!
at least McCain makes us feel WELCOME. obama just pisses all over hillary supporters....

can't wait to get on the mccain bandwagon if hillary loses.
i wish we could count on a mcCain getting out sends war fears to foreign and the American people...Know nothing about the economy and a little guy like me know mos. ago we were in a recession and if get in we will be in a depression, borrowing money from China and continue throwing dollars into irag....what a waste, why couldnt we have done better.....Money all about money.....Oh buy the way we dont have it you guys just keep ps ing it away....Thanks.....But we will be the recogning force i hope....
McCain knows there are lots of us that Obama and his supporters don't want - actually there are enough of us to change the election - so come on Hillary supporters, if the super delegates are stupid enough to nominate Obama, then please join me in a nationwide write in ballot - write in Hillary Clinton for president, then we can let the supreme court decide like the did in 2000 - and wasn't that fun?  By the way - where were all you Democrats back then when I was working my rear end off trying to get Al Gore elected? Maybe you folks are to blame for the mess the world is in and you should stand up and take credit for it right now.
I want change too - I'd like to see Obama change a lot things including the rudness of his supporters.
Clinton's anti-Obama supporters are not going to support him, short of him putting her on the ticket with him...

Giving her a monetary helping hand is wasteful...
It's simple really.  McCain is pandering to the Clinton supporters hoping they will make good on statements to vote for McCain rather than Obama.

Shame on Clinton supporters if they jump to McCain (and 4 more years of Bush Economics and Bush Diplomacy of leading with a big stick).
Given how the republicans have treated McCain and the democrats Clinton a McCain-Clinton pairup would indeed be a dream ticket and a rightful slap to both parties.  McCain could disavow the Bush Admin and Clinton everyone included.   I'd be more inclined to vote.  I think it would be in stark contrast to the evilness in both parties. Just think, either they'd runaway win or, for the first time in history, Republicans would overwhelmingly vote and elect a democratic candidate: Obama.  Hadn't many said they'd vote democratic rather than for McCain.  They'd have to put up or shut up.
We're counting her out the same way we're counting McCain out! And the only reason back in the day no one counted a Clinton out might be due to if they did they were never heard of or seen again!! And as for McCain, his buddies should've been impeached!
I admire and respect all the people who serve in tthe Military service for thier country. But remember the patriotism does not come by just wearing a Flag Pin. Patriotisim mean do good thing for the country whether you wear a Flag Pin or not. The war in Iraq is basically waged to satisfy the ego some politicians and benifit thier people. We all knew the WMD story was misleading factor to justify American people to wage this war. I hope in future people will study thoroughly before authorising a war. If elected officials are lying to American people then their patriorism should be questioned even if they wear a Flag Pin or not.
Lets face it Hillary make's a better Republican than a Democrat,I always said the Clintons were nothing more than closet Republians,NAFTA and the China trade deals proved that beyon a doubt,so why wouldn't McCain embrace her...
WHY IS HE PRAISING HER...IS SHE GING TO SUPPORT HIM IN THE END.....THERE IS SOMETHING GOING ON HERE
There's a bunch of so called dems on Gretawire@fox conspiring to now vote for McCain! LOL This group of Greta followers are really pathetic!! Go Obama
You're not posting anything right now but this is to you MSNBC.  What are you going to do after Clinton is gone.  Right now you're putting her picture on your politics page all the time and articles against Obama.  It's obvious to half way intelligent observers.  Not good for your image/rep.
Obviously, McCain will do whatever is possible to extend the time Hillary is torpedoing the unvoidable candidacy and the electability of OBAMA.

If by lading her he will achieve this goal, is nevertheless doubtful

But it is a fact, confirmed by several Republicans which received a call by pollsters of McCain - Obama and McCain - Clinton opinion, that they untruthfully stated that they would vote for Hillary.
This also explains why OBAMA leads Clinton in preference for countrywide nomination, but appears weaker as a candidate to win over McCain !!
