Clinton: Bill lashes out at Purdum

Posted: Tuesday, June 03, 2008 9:10 AM by Mark Murray

The same Huffington Post reporter who broke the Obama “bitter” story got a new scoop yesterday of Bill Clinton lashing out at Vanity Fair’s Todd Purdum and calling him “sleazy,” “dishonest” and “slimy” for his critical magazine article on Clinton. It’s worth noting that the HuffPo reporter didn’t identify herself as a reporter and said she disliked the article when asking for his reaction.

From the piece: “Tightly gripping this reporter's hand and refusing to let go, Clinton heatedly denounced the writer, who is currently married to his former White House Press Secretary, Dee Dee Myers. ‘[He's] sleazy,’ he said referring to Purdum. ‘He's a really dishonest reporter. And one of our guys talked to him… And I haven't read [the article]. There's just five or six blatant lies in there. But he's a real slimy guy,’ the former President said. When I reminded him that Purdum was married to his former press spokesperson Myers, Clinton was undeterred. ’That's all right-- he's still a scumbag,’ Clinton said. ‘Let me tell ya--he's one of the guys -- he's one of the guys that brought out all those lies about Whitewater to Kenneth Starr. He's just a dishonest guy-- can't help it.’”

Bill continued, “‘It's just slimy. It's part of the national media's attempt to nail Hillary for Obama. It's the most biased press coverage in history. It's another way of helping Obama. They had all these people standing up in this church cheering, calling Hillary a white racist, and he didn't do anything about it. The first day he said “Ah, ah, ah well.” Because that's what they do-- he gets other people to slime her. So then they saw the movie they thought this is a great ad for John McCain -- maybe I better quit the church. It's all politics. It's all about the bias of the media for Obama. Don't think anything about it.’”

“‘But I'm telling ya, all it's doing is driving her supporters further and further away-- because they know exactly what it is-- this has been the most rigged coverage in modern history-- and the guy ought to be ashamed of himself. But he has no shame. It isn't the first dishonest piece he's written about me or her.’”

The New York Times: “By the end of the day, Mr. Clinton’s aides had issued a statement saying that he had been ‘understandably upset about an outrageously unfair article,’ but that the language he had used about Mr. Purdum ‘was inappropriate and he wishes he had not used it.’”

Reporting from South Dakota, NBC/NJ’s Mike Memoli notes that the entire Clinton clan gathered for one last primary-eve rally yesterday evening, with Hillary saying she’s counting on a grassroots effort to help her end on a strong note. “We’re being outspent four-to-one, but we’ve had something better than money and TV ads,” she said. “We’ve had thousands of South Dakotans who’ve gotten up every day and gone to work for us… And you know that by doing your part tomorrow and coming out to vote you send a strong signal that you really want to be included in helping to pick the next president of the United States.”

Clinton joked that the campaign has been such a “grueling process” that she needed Chelsea to speak for her earlier. And sure enough, later her voice faded once again. “Ah, a long campaign,” she said, as Chelsea and not Bill came on stage to relieve her. As she spoke, both parents watched on, faces beaming -- Hillary from the stage, and Bill from the floor off to the side. Hillary Clinton did return to the stage later, though, telling a hot crowd crammed into a building at the W.H. Fairgrounds that tomorrow would be “your day.”

“What is so great about this campaign is that yesterday I can be in Puerto Rico and today I can be in South Dakota,” she said. “It is a privilege and an honor to be part of making history like this. But you know, the campaign isn’t an end in itself. The campaign is to nominate the stronger candidate against Senator McCain because that’s the only way we’re going to win in November.”

News Flash **** Bill Clinton Declares Vast Left-wing Conspiracy!****

Isn't it amazing how the Clinton's show their true colors when they are mad about something?
if its not true then why is bill getting so made at vanity fair.  if that was the case then he should be getting mad at everyone.

Obama Talks about small businesses

Slimy---takes one to know one, Bill!
Boy, that "reporter" really baits, huh?  I guess anything to get a story.

And interesting that she is bashing Bill Clinton as Obama seems poised to win.  Opportunistic?

She is not someone I care to read anything from...I don't like her tactics.

I abhor the way Bill Clinton has behaved in this race, but I'm on his side in this one.  He was played.

I'm wondering if the "reporter" is a Republican partisan.
Spending 4 to 1 ???  If she had it she would spend it.

Mr. Impeached President you show the real Clinton colors.  You claim the pastor refered to HRC as a white racist and Obama didn't do anything about it??????  What did you personally do about calling your press secretary's husband sleazy, dishonest and slimy???  I know...you had your people handle it.  True Clinton colors.

Bob, Chicago
Why is everybody but Hillary to blame? As I recall, the media never mentioned so much "baggage" Hillary herself mentioned. Everyone has been gracious, including Monica.
How's is it Obama's fault for what some Vanity Fair reporter writes or what the media does?  They want to blame Obama for everything.  It's not Obama's fault that a visiting priest talked bad about Hillary.  It's always the Clinton's against the world.  They don't take any responsibility for their actions. Oh the media didn't treat us fairly, so let's vote for McCain!!
They should know by now.. Not to mess with Bill Clinton!  Clinton is very protective of his image and Hillary's image!!

Bill is the former president, so he does deserve some respect on some level!!

He also called him a "scum bag" why did you leave that out
This coming from Slick Willy who lost his Law license for lying? This coming from the man who argued the meaning of the word is? And lets not even bring cigars into this picture.

He's lost his mind. Syphillis will usually do that.
I agree with Bill, and as for me and millions of other women, I will be writing in the name of Hillary Clinton on my ballot.  Obama is a reverse racist and misygonist.
OMG...is this the same Bill Clinton - that was President of the U.S.A. less than 8 years ago.

What Happen? This is very sad - lost all bearings.

I'm sick of the Clintons and all this drama!  I hope the Supers declare today so we can signal the end, finally and none to soon, to our long, tiring Clinton story.  They are a family - they love their daughter -they seem to have a strong (if strange) marriage.  Just let them go off and leave us all ALONE!
Bill...give it up.  You're just embarrassing yourself now.
being one...he would know one.

Touched the classic Clinton Why-can't-I-get-away-with- ANYthing-and-EVERYthing hot button there.
WILL he grow up before he grows really old?

(None of this is news to anyone who lived through
the first Clinton World drama. Certainly not to journalists who get all kinds of buzz. Purdum
is a fine journalist.)
Poor Bill, couldn't close out the primary campaign without shooting his mouth off ignorantly one last time.  This is why there can be no Nightmare Ticket where Bill can sink Obama's candidacy with his bad mouth.  It's unfortunate that he keeps getting hammered by some in the press for his good work but this is the biggest problem of having Hillary team up with Barack, too many hate the Clintons.

It's too bad that Bill didn't play it smart and just blow off that stupid article.  Instead of a 2,500 word response he should have just ignored the article and declined to comment on it.  By blowing up he actually gave the article legs to be talked about.  We can't afford mistakes like this for the general election.

Go Obama 08/12!
So glad to see that we have a "saint" commenting on this article - take your own advice mary lee!
The Clintons have taken every right-wing attack thrown at them and survived.  If the reporter is going to use un-named sources, then he shouldnt be allowed to use them - if you arent "man" enough to use your name then dont make a comment!
Huffington Post is sleazy, dishonest and slimy.
Todd Purdum is nothing more than a tabloid journalist. He should be writing for the Enquirer, The Sun, The Mirror or some other trash gossip paper.

He is as guilty as most other "so-called" investigative journalists and reporters, talking heads, poltitical analysts, these fools who have their own shows and columns like Krauthammer, Russert, Crystal, Wallace, Limbaugh, and on and on and on, who were too spineless, unethical, and spineless in the lead up to the war to ask the tough questions, have the deceny and morals to speak out then, but who do nothing but criticize now. The most recent example of this is Scott McClellan. I believe what he says in his book, but he is as guilty and complicit as Bush/Cheney themselves. Todd Purdum is no different. He is a disgrace to his profession and even the Enquirer is too good for him.
As many times as Bill has cheated, Jennifer, Juanita, Paula, Monica, Kathleen, etc., why would anyone expect otherwise.
Look at some of the people he has been running around with prior to this election process, billionaires who have been charged with soliciting prostitutes.
I believe Bill Clinton has an addiction to sex and should receive treatment.
The American people need better than this family of clowns, Bill and his sexcapades has eroded all respect for Hillary in many peoples minds.
I see Chucky and the boys are still editing or refusing to post any comments they don't agree with.  Some things never change.
Pahleeze! I do think it is slimy for this reporter to not identify herself - but I am wondering if she identified herself to Obama earlier (I don't think that was offered as an excuse for Obama making the 'bitter' comment).  Maybe Bill is just tired... isn't that the other excuse for Clintons making inappropriate comments.

I don't see that the media coverage was all that biased.  The Rev. Wright story ran non-stop.  Plus Mica is obsessed with Obama leaving is church - BTW, where does John McCain go to church, where does Hillary go to church and have the attended for the last 20years?

Hillary's campaign tried to play the game by shutting out the media in the beginning - they set the tone.  Now they are blaming the media for it??  How about pointing the finger at yourself, Bill.  You have caused a lot of controversy for this campaign of your wife.

Let us not forget that Hillary, Bill and the rest of their campaign totally expected this to be over by Feb. 5.  They ignored many states and had not funds and no plan beyond Feb 5.

It is time for Bill to grow up and be a good loser.  He has a lot of explaining to do and not just to his wife.  A lot of the reason Democrats are in the position we are in now is because of his 'activities' while in the White House.  This led to a Republican overthrough of Congress and the deepening of the partisanship.  He needs to take accountability.

Stop playing the blame game... nobody wins.

Obama 08/12
That's it Bill, blame everyone else as you always have.  What was it that you said "I never had sex with that woman" or something to that affect.  I'm so tired of these primaries, they have went on way to long.

Now you are blaming Obama.  The media has been harder on Hillary, NO, I DON"T THINK SO.  Blame Obama for the Catholic Priests comments, blame Obama for Hillary's assassination remark, blame Obama for this magazine article, blah blah blah... I'm over it.  I truly do hope yesterday was your last day campaigning.  You are losing it Bill.
So Bill Clinton used the words slimy, dishonest, and sleazy when describing the reporter.

Someone call Webster.  We have a new definition for the word irony.

Obama/Anyone but Hillary Clinton in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
Mary Lee - You are a brain dead!
Cry me a river....

Who's sounding like a 'crazy old uncle' now?
Ramble on. He can be such an embarassment.
I think the media has done a hatchet job on Obama as well.  What about all the negative media coverage of "bitter", Rev Wright, Flagle, being associated with being a Muslim.  Hillary jumped on the media band wagon for those!!!
way to go bill you once said hillary never complains.  thats all the both of you ever doooooooo. its really getting boring bill.JUST GO HOME AND SPEND YOUR 110 MILLON AND LEAVE US POOR UNDER EDUCATED PEOPLE ALONE WILL YOU.
Bill Clinton's tirade just proves again the main thesis of Vanity Fair article--he is a changed man, changed perhaps by his surgery.  This man is not the President we used to know--or did we indeed know him?  We had always known that Bill Clinton had no shame (absurd he shouts shame on you at others now), is very reckless, unethical in his ways and very ruthless and selfish.  Dishonesty?  He shouts it at the media--but honesty was never one of the virtues of the Clintons!    Just consider the way they fought this campaign--trying to change the rule at the middle of the game when it appeared they were losing, and at the end claiming that it is now not about delegates, but about popular votes, and that they have the most of it by their own convoluted math.  Bill Clinton now  tries to implicate Obama with the nasty sermon in his church by a Catholic priest and the Vanity Fair article--and yet he accuses the Vanity Fair writer of writing without proof.  Where is Clinton's proof that Obama was in anyway involved?  Bill Clinton needs help!  He doesn't know it--and there seems to be no one around him who can tell him or offer it!  He is going crazy over his apparently unsuccessful attempt to return to the White House.  Why do he and Hillary want the White House so badly?  Can Obama ever trust the Clintons?  Should they?  Forget the VP "Dream Team" hope!  --Dr. Sam
Vintage Clinton politics. Act shamefully, get caught, then push back against the insuing scandal by flipping the script, and scream 'conspiracy theory', all the while dragging Senator Obama to the top of the list of usual suspect conspirators.

Obama has'nt touched Bill, and Hillary's laundry list of fodder for salacious talking points.

For Bill to claim that Barack is doing so on the eve of his victory for the democratic nomination, is an incredibly feeble defense of his philandering, and Hillary's defeat.

Scumbag? Wait, who got an intern in the Oval Office, then lied about it?

Scumbag, that's like the pot calling the kettle black...
Can buy Chucky Todd's credentials on any street corner for $20.  Political Director my a**!

Tabloid sensationalist at best!

Don't know why you don't post most comments as written buddy boy, unless you have a problem with the truth.  However, I have no doubt you should are used to editing, deleting and leaving out facts. Just look at your reporting on the run up to the war for starters.
Sleazy; Having an affair with a whitehouse intern in the oval office, doing all kinds of unspeakables, when you are supposed to be working for your country. Dishonest; pointing your finger into the camera, at the American people and the world, and denying the whole thing when you get caught and do not have the courage to admit your mistake.  Slimy; blaming everyone else for attacking him and  wanting accountablity for his actions and expecting the President of the United States to be held to a high moral and ethical standard that the country and  world can respect.
Great legacy, awesome character, too bad we are going to miss out for the next four years of the same blind ambitious behavior.............
To all you Obama folks out there:

The more you guys trash Hillary or Bill, the less support Obama will get from Hillary voters. But since we know that you guys dont care, just try to keep one promise.

No Looting or race riots when McCain wins in Nov.
If history is to be the judge of one's contribution to our country through politics, neither of the Clintons fair well in the short term. In the long term, people will forget the outlandish behavior of a former President and the "me before all others" behavior of a U.S. Senator.  Both scream for the "party" to get behind them; both scream the unfairness of media coverage...much harder on Hillary than Obama...and it's becoming more obvious that they have no restraint on what they say or how they say it. If we look back to Hillary as First Lady, we'll see someone who cried as loudly as possible about the right-wing conspiracy taking on her husband, the President of the United States. Now the husband is crying louding about another right-wing conspiracy against his wife...the entire media! We have a multitude of federal entitlement programs...yet the Presidency is not one of them. The "me above all others" of the Clintons has grown thin and childish. It's time for them to gather their closest advisors and gather in upstate New York for a "pity me, it's been unfair" party. Remembering Bill Clinton looking directly into the television camera and stating loudly "I did not have sex with that woman" says it all. It's time for them to move on.
Bill Clinton has lost any credibility he may have once had. These folks don't know when to give it up and go home.
I have voted Democrat since I turned 18, I'm now 40. I do NOT have the confidence in Barack Obama to be the president of the United States. He lacks experience in dealing with most of the issues facing the citizens of this country. He is a great motivational speaker, I do give him credit for that. I watched Robin Williams movie " Man of the Year" again , and to me it sounds like Obama has used the script for his presidential run. I have talked with numerous people in my area, and a majority of us will be casting a vote AGAINST Obama, even if that means a vote for John McCain.
OH BOY, Bill doesn't have a very good memory does He ?

maybe the guy is bitter about what Bill did to DEE DEE when he was in the white house.
Bill is soooo right. O'Phony would never have left that gross church had he not needed the PR. Funny, isn't it, how he has been a member all these years and hearing that Pastor all these years and doing nothing about it. He is gonna lose the race for us Dems, NICE.
Slick Willly go look in a mirror and keep repeating these words...."dishonest","sleazy","slimy" "blatant liar" "ought to be ashamed of myself", because these words decribes you to a "T".
Sleazy?  Dishonest?  That's rich coming from Mr. "I did not have sex with that woman!"

Please!  I have had enough of Mr. BJ Clinton.  Thanks to him I had to censor the nightly news so my elementary school age children wouldn't ask questions about the conduct of the president.  Pathetic!  Simply pathetic!

I am still hoping you can win it Hillary. I feel the press has been most biased. I am a senior citizen and cannot understand what is happening in Washington.
Guy needs to take a look in the mirror.
...tis the height of hypocrisy for Clinton to call anyone sleazy...

...time for Billary to pack their bags and get out of the way: your ways are old and tired...the days of selling your soul for a vote are over...
I think we are witnessing how the media single handedly is ending Democracy in the United States.
The article had nothing to do with Obama and I cannot understand why Bill Clinton incorporate Obama into this. The article is talking about Bill and his women and I think Bill is trying to put the focus on Obama where is doesn't belong.  Bill this article is about you and not Sen. Obama.  MSNBC please post.
I guess to all the above writers and Obama supporters, what do you want in the United States.  Do you want to go back to when Bill Clinton was president or do you want to go forward with Bush/McClain or Obama.  Come on people Obama can denounce his church but he listened to it for 20 years you cannot believe he has not agreed to some of the teachings!!!!!!  I am afraid that McClain will win and we will be in more trouble than now.  Did you see a recent headline? GM closing 4 plants.  It is only the tip of what is coming.  Clinton supporters are true and loyal and believe in her.  Obama does not have the majurity to be a realistic president.  I guess I will be like so many other Clinton supporters, I cannot in good conscience vote for Obama and I certainly won't vote for McCain so I won't vote.  Obama cannot win the election without us, so we will at least be able to deter his racist, outlandish character to our chief office.
