Supers: Obama gets six so far

Posted: Tuesday, June 03, 2008 12:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Might this be the start of a potential flood. Water is under the door. The towels are down.

Obama's picked up six in the superdelegate count so far today. He got 3.5 of those between 11:15 a.m. and noon -- CA John A. Perez, MA John Olver, and three from Michigan -- Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, Debbie Dingell, and Rick Wiener. (Keep in mind, those Michigan delegates count for half.) Dingell's husband, Rep. John Dingell, is a Clinton endorser.

We reported on 2.5 in First Thoughts -- Rep. Jim Clyburn, who came out officially for Obama on TODAY, as well as Michigan superdelegate Joyce Lalonde (half vote) and Missouri's Maria Chapelle-Nadal.

As far as those Edwards pledged delegates, the remaining two in Iowa will likely announce their choice today. They are working on the details of when, how and, possibly, if it will be packaged with superdelegates.

New Hampshire Edwards pledged delegate Sharon Norgren told First Read she's remaining uncommitted at least for the "next couple of days." When asked if she's leaning way or another, she said, "I don't want to discuss it."

COUNTDOWN TO THE NOMINATON:
OBAMA: 33.5
CLINTON: 198

The NBC NEWS Delegate Counts:
PLEDGED: Obama 1729 to 1625
SUPERS: Obama 339 to 295
EDWARDS PL.: Obama 16.5 to 0
OVERALL: Obama 2,084.5 to 1,920

* 190.5 undeclared supers.

* Since the rules committee judgment, Obama has gotten 12 superdelegates to Clinton's two. Here's who they were:

OBAMA (12): MI Debbie Dingell; MI Rick Wiener; MI Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick; MA John Olver; CA John A. Perez; SC Rep. Jim Clyburn, Michigan's Joyce Lalonde (who only gets a half vote); Missouri Rep. Maria Chapelle-Nadal; WA DNC member David McDonald; VA DNC Member -- a rules committee member -- Jerome Wiley Segovia; Connecticut DNC Member Nancy DiNardo; and two from MI -- MI delegates get half a vote each: Lu Battaglieri and Brenda Lawrence. Yesterday, Obama got Maine add-on Gwethalyn Phillips and Nevada's Yvonne Gates.

CLINTON (2): NY Irene Stein and Louisiana's Democratic Party chair Chris Whittington.

At this stage no deluge is necessary the seeping forth of delegates seems to do the trick.
Super-D's ... please END THIS TODAY!!!
Thanks to the ones who had the courage to endorse before tonight's primaries ...(and are not afraid of the Clintons or ending up like Vince Foster).

OBAMA '08 & '12
Could these SD's do ANY more to make the nominee look weak?!?!?!  By refusing to decide/announce, as if there is any real debate anymore, it just says that even the party elders are unsure of the nominee.  Yeah, that'll really unite the party.  I'm sure the GOP is gearing that ad campaign item up right now.  Bunch of yella belly sapsuckers!!
Between now and about 9:30pm tonight, Obama will get the supers that he needs to wrap this thing up!!

http://www.politivine.com
Oh sweet Lord, this is wonderful!

I'm praying for 3 more bundled supers announcements before the polls close.

I want the elected delegates to give Obama the final nod.
Even if he does get the nomination tonight she will still take this all the way to the convention. I won't believe she is out until I see her giving the concession speech and throwing her support behind Obama.
Thanks to the supers who have come forward already.  If Hillary were a man, would you tread so lightly?  I think not!
This hand-holding of HRC while she continues to tout GOP talking points about Obama is absolutely disgraceful.  An enthusiastic endorsement of our nominee would send a powerful message to counter the ad being aired tonite by the GOP.  I hope President Obama has a long memory and that the most these gutless SD's can hope for from his is a crumb here and there.
Clyburn announced 3 more supers just recently

They're Rep. John Spratt of South Carolina; New York superdelegate Ralph Dawson, and Tim Moore, a South Carolina Edwards delegate.

just put eight belles down already
Any SD who don't pledge by wednesday are afraid of the Clintons. But they should be more afraid of voters who will remember their cowardness and vote them out of office.

Now is the time before the train leaves you behind.
Get Ready --Here it comes.....The NEXT CHAPTER OF UNITY AND SUCCESS IN AMERICAN HISTORY!!!
It's about time.  If the Democratic party leaders are smarter than a piece of toast they will make sure that enough supers come over by  poll closing time  to have a great big triumphant "here's our nominee" moment tonight with big headlines in the morning papers, not an anti-climatic, after the fact, by the way moment some time tomorrow afternoon. It's show time, people.
Hey Domenico,  I like the analogy of the water...very funny.
Clinton supporters who don't like Obama: Why???
Why do you hate Obama? You might be disappointed that the first serious female presidential contender was beaten, but was it won unfairly by Obama? What did Obama do to deserve the ire?
I've given his mode of victory some thought on the question of how he should conduct himself tonignt, given the fractured state with which we find our party.

I'm hoping Obama WILL NOT behave with an unbridled display of the joy of victory. I honestly don't think that he will. If he is the serious politician of genious, and grace that I know him to be, he will tamp down the hoopla, for unity's sake.
The DNC, the media, and generally everyone else except the Clinton campaign agree that the magic delegate number for the nomination is 2118. However, with Clinton still clinging to her last shred of hope that the Michigan ruling can be overturned in front of the Credentials Committee, I think Obama isn't safe until he can secure enough delegates to make up for the ones he was handed in MI by the Rules and Bylaws Committee.

Therefore, the magic number (in my opinion) is really 2177. Hillary will keep barking until Obama is so far ahead that there's absolutely NO chance she can catch him.

Sad but true.
When Obama gets the necessary Super Delegates, I think Hillary will concede.

It's time for HER to start making amends within the
Democratic party.
If she doesn't make up with the African American community very quickly, her Senate 'career' may begin to falter
Her re-election to the Senate is not a lock
To say nothing of becoming Senate majority leader
That's a pipe dream
Nobody's gonna want a spiteful, vengeful (and not very competent) Majority leader in charge

A majority of Democratic Senators supported Obama.
Think they'll want to give Hillary a chance for 'pay back'

Time to make amends, all around

Hillary, you're NOT the only aggrieved party...
And you're NOT gonna be VP

Let's move on and heal the Democratic party

Obama/Edwards '08
End corruption, end the war
Looks like you may be missing a few from Michigan who pledged to Obama before they were seated:

OBAMA 08
Hmm...since Obama has been established as the Second Coming, why is it coming down to the wire?   Could it be that people recognize that he's a far weaker candidate than HRC?  I can't stand her either, but I wonder why more haven't come out to support him already - do they know in their hearts that he's not the best candidate?
Chuck get on top of things!  There are 4 more BESIDES the ones you just listed!!
The super delegates need to bring this to an end. The Clinton campaign started today with a leak she will admit Obama won tonight. They never had any intention of doing that. What they wanted is to depress the Obama vote and excellerate the Clinton sympathy vote by camming out later and saying the report was false and the media and the Obama campaign were dumping on her and trying to force her out. The bet being the women voters would mobilize and turn out in large numbers. Get these people off the stage. All this talk that tonight it is about Hillary is crap. Obama ran a smart and well planned race. He gave her room at the end. He has won. It is his time not her's. It was not Edwardsor Richardson's,  Dodd or the others time when they saw they could not win. Like an honest advarisary they withdrew with dignity. Not the Clintons. They think it was taken from them. Hijacked. Good god they lost. Just go away.
If you vote your conscience, then what is the big deal? Just keep it real!
MSNBCews says he just got 3 more SDs just now (during andrea mitchells hour).....MSNBC has 30 needed, Obama site says 32, and demconwatch says 34 needed....
First Read, keep up.  Obama just got two more, Maine Superdelegate Jennifer DeChant and Florida Edwards delegate, Fred K. McDowell.  Obama needs 31.5 right now.
40 years tomorrow (June 4) will be the anniversary of RFK winning the California Primary. Dare I mention his assassination that took place shortly after midnight ( June 5, 1968)? He died on June 6. Many, many of us are mourning that loss this week.

I find this big push toward getting the superdelegates ASAP very disturbing in this context. Why is not Obama paying homage to RFK... WITHOUT it not being all about Obama?

But maybe the Obama campaign wants to declare victory to drown out a possible Rezko trial decision this week.

And it is BS about wasting time and giving McCain an advantage. Alert... there is a whole 5 months until the General Election!!!!

This has been so long and drawn out.
I don't have any faith that she will concede.
She will take it to the convention, supreme court, and God if she could get a personal meeting.
Bill will still be complaining about the press, gender bias, disrespect, shame on everyone, racism was used against HIM!
From what started as a firestorm for democracy,
a cry for change,
record numbers of voters whipped up and ready to be involved again...
has turned into the most desperate, corny, scandal filled, lower than a B movie, soap opera!
It is truly sad the low level this primary dropped to!
Leave it to us Dems. to take our own wind out of our sails!!
How impotent is this party - really?  There are so many opportunities to get the general election campaign started - yet we still have a large portion of people (some of the SD's and the Clinton camp) who absolutely choose to ignore the elephant in the room (that Obama has won this race) And that primarily victory is due in no small part to HRC's failure to plan for post Super Tuesday.  Which shows a serious lack of judgment and planning on her and her campaign's part.

So - let's keep playing this stupid game like 3rd graders - and the elephant in the room will soon be the elephant in the White House for 4 years.
Le guerre est fini....

'...BELTWAY COURTSHIP

Obama Camp Begins Delicate Task
Of Wooing Clinton's Supporters

By MONICA LANGLEY
June 3, 2008; Page A1

The awkward courtship has begun between supporters of presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama.

With the bitter, hard-fought primary season ending Tuesday, a behind-the-scenes drama is unfolding. Amid growing speculation that Sen. Clinton may pull out as soon as Tuesday night, top Obama strategists and supporters are wooing several of Sen. Clinton's key big-money donors, political operatives and policy advisers. A Clinton spokesman said Monday that her staff is focused on winning the nomination. (See related article.)

Still, communication between the two camps is on the rise. Among the moves so far: Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, a senior adviser to Sen. Obama, has talked to Clinton supporter Leon Panetta, the former congressman and President Clinton's chief of staff, about endorsing Sen. Obama once the final primary contests conclude. Obama chief strategist David Axelrod recently chatted with ex-Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle, whom the Obama camp will want to bring in for help with women and Hispanics.

A top money man for Sen. Obama, hedge-fund manager Orin Kramer, is keeping a dialogue open with two of Sen. Clinton's finance chairs, Hassan Nemazee and Maureen White, one of Sen. Clinton's top fund-raisers, in hopes of moving their fund-raising prowess to his candidate soon.

The contacts aren't part of a concerted effort by the Obama campaign, but the result of numerous informal conversations among people who have known each other for years, including some who have worked together on past campaigns.

"We're all Democrats and we're going to come together to beat John McCain in the fall, but there are still two contests left and that's our focus," said Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor.

DISCUSSION

• Who has run the better campaign, Clinton or Obama? Cast your vote.In a conference call Monday with the Clinton camp's top 25 fund-raisers, one of her senior advisers, Harold Ickes, asked them to a private meeting Tuesday with Sen. Clinton, who plans to do "what's best for the country," according to two participants. The fund-raisers voiced their loyalty to Sen. Clinton, even suggesting that they would move as a group to Sen. Obama when Sen. Clinton advised them to do so, these people said.

Some of these people say they believe Sen. Clinton could withdraw from the Democratic race this week, perhaps as early as Tuesday night, but none of them had been told that as of Monday evening.

Sen. Clinton's communications director Howard Wolfson said, "Sen. Clinton's staff remains focused -- just as she is -- on winning this nomination."

In anticipation of Sen. Clinton's withdrawal from the Democratic race, the Obama campaign plans to draw up a list of dozens of names for Sen. Obama to call personally, three Democratic insiders say. The Clinton supporters on his list are expected to include top fund-raisers and politicians in cities around the country, two of these people say...'
Obama is the man! Ladies and gentlemen, today marks the most significant and unique day in United States presidential political history. The day when a black man officially recieves the nomination for Democratic presidential candidate! I never thought I would see the day but here it is. AMERICA RULES!!! Mark this day down on your calenders for it marks the beginning of a new era for America and the world. Decades from now we will look back at today as the date when the world officially changed from the wrong path to the right. When historians and citizens of the world alike look back on Obama's presidency as the greatest in US history, today will be the day that started the change. America rules and so does the world!

OBAMA/CLINTON 2008!!!
I'm confused by the need to treat Hillary so respectfully when she, her husband, her campaign and her supporters have shown so little respect to Obama, his family, his supporters and the DNC. Had she herself shown more grace maybe I wouldn't be hoping so hard for the definitive superdelegate flood today.

I guess I didn't realize that feminism means you get to be indignant when your male opponent pulls a chair out for you but then you also get to be indignant when it looks like he's not giving you enough time to end your campaign. Isn't it supposed to be about equal rights rather than deciding when you want to wear your big girl panties and when you don't?
This message is for Todd:
You mentioned a little while ago on MSNBC that "Tonight is Hillary's night." NO! You are wrong! If Obama wins the required 2,118 delegates tonight, IT IS OBAMA'S NIGHT! We have been waiting for this night for a very long time, and you and Hillary can't take that from us. She can do what she needs to do later, but tonight IS Obama's night!
Here comes the gush.  I always knew it would come.

Obama '08 and '12
Donna wrote:  I'm hoping Obama WILL NOT behave with an unbridled display of the joy of victory.

But, I say, why isn't he entitled to some joy in winning?  He has worked hard his entire life, he has spent the last 15 months working his heart out - why, why, why isn't he allowed to enjoy his moment of victory?  Why must we continue to bow and scrape to Hillary- ohh, wouldn't want to hurt her feelings.  Do you think for one instant that she would concern herself with anyone's feelings if situations were reversed?  HA, no way.

Gloating is one thing, but do NOT deny Obama the joy of getting what he worked for and deserves.
The interesting thing will be the fall out after the nomination process.   How many of the elected officials endorsing one candidate or the other will feel the ground swell from their own districts and lose their seat in office come next election.
From my state of Washington who overwhelmingly (73%) support Senator Obama and have two woman Senators who have supported Hillary to the end, their days are numbered.
It was never about man vs woman. People in Washington state have a woman Governor. We don't care what sex they are! Sex was and is non issue.
We care about what they are made of and what if they best represents the people of our state.
I agree until the superdelegates let Hillary know that she cannot win, Hillary will continue to be a threat.  100 superdelegates should come out for Obama today and maybe just maybe Hillary will get the picture but I doubt it.  Hillary is in this race not for the country but to make history.
Jen (Sent Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:09 PM)

Jen, Hillary ran a wonderful race.  First ever woman to make it as far as she has.  Although she really lowered herself sometimes, she deserves respect for all the hurdles she faced throughout this race.  No one wants to just push her out.  I think they are all waiting for her to make the first move out of respect.  I know, if it were me, I would be one of those people.  I don't believe it's that they don't have confidence in Barack.
Good news about the delegates...but I'm getting worried after seeing the tape of Bob Beckel on Fox News this morning saying that a big shoe is going to drop tomorrow regarding Michelle Obama.  I know we've been hearing those "whitey/Farrakhan" videotape rumors for weeks now, but Beckel--who's a big Obama supporter--seemed deeply concerned.  MSNBC, what are you doing to follow up on this?
Superdelegates.  I hope this is the last election where they play a role.  Not because I think their very existence is unfair, but because they are cowards.  At this point, there is no reason to hold an endorsement.  HRC has been given every courtesy now it's time to move on.  I'm sure some are thinking they want to be the vote to put Obama over the top and receive some type of gratitude.  Putting myself in Obama's shoes, I'm grateful to those who declare today.  I'm appreciative of those who do so tomorrow. And I know the difference between the two.
Outstanding - now we Democrats have some healing to do and a caused to pursue.  All Hillary and Barack supporters must unite.  Set aside our personal agendas, prejudices ways and collaborate on the agenda of change and a better America for us all.

John McCain offers only the same and we all know that - we can’t afford the same - not anymore, after almost 8 years of the GOP and still currently each day gets more and more stressful and difficult for us Americans.  The Bush administration will do nothing else this year beside try to bleed us for all the money they can and use part of it to help try to get John McCain elected so they can continue to bleed us for our money.

As, they make excuses and blame other so that they can continue to have their "market partner" rise oil prices so they can continue their greed.

We need them out...our livelihood depends on it - they care nothing about the average American.  We are their work-abies.

The GOP is running this country like a cooperation.  The American citizen to them are employees...they monopolizes the markets - causes prices to raise and U.S. to work harder so we can give them more money.  There is no more competition -they control the market.

We need Barack Obama and the Democratic Party to step in and sit guidelines that protect U.S.  We need competition again so the market can be fair and not controlled.  We need a Government that will do what it was designed to do govern its people, by the will of its people. Not, use its people for the will of the government.

The Bush/Cheney administration and GOP has basically turn our Democracy in a form of a dictatorship with a communistic flavor of Government - they don't care about what we need or want anymore...they want us to do what they want and that's not the way it should work.

They have had us working for them for the past 7 years.  Finally we have a chance for the government to start working for U.S.  Let's not blow it

Vote for the Democratic Party - vote Barack Obama

Thank you and GOD Bless America
C'mon Chuckie! We want an updated number!!

Obama only has like 29.5 to go, right??

Get on it Chuckie!
donna and josh,  I hear you.

isn't this exciting?  i've never been so into politics, and I must say I wish the nasty words mostly generated by clinton supporters would go away.  it really attests to clinton's character that she encouraged this rage and emotion.  this is about what is best for our country, our children.  I believe that either HRC or BO would absolutely protect my civil rights, your rights, and those of our children.  But when it's won, it's won! All Dems should realize that we win either way.
I admire you Hillary, but it's time to hang it up.
Nickberry:

Obama is not a defendant in the Rezko trial.  He has not been accused of any wrongdoing.  Hillary Clinton is a defendant in the Peter Paul fraud trial.  Peter Paul alleges that the Clintons defrauded him.  Why do you Clinton supporters have such difficulty understanding the difference?  If you want to criticize Obama for his positions or his experience, feel free, but a Clinton supporter should never criticize any other politician on ethics.  Hillary and her sexual predator husband are two of the most corrupt politicians in the history of this country.

Obama/Selebius in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
I have no problem with the Super Delegates withholding until tonight when the polls are closed in respect to Clinton.

However, if Clinton does not acknowledge and concede her campaign has as many suspected been all about her not the People.  That's sad.

Even now as her camp tell different networks different things she come out and says it's not true.  THIS IS JUST A PLOT TO CONTROL THE MEDIA ON SEN. OBAMA'S HISTORICAL DAY.

HER CAMPAIGN MANAGER WAS ON ANDREA MITCHELL A FEW MINUTES ACTUALLY WHAT HE SAID WAS A THREAT.  HE ACTUALLY SAID THAT THE GOV. THAT ARE CLINTON SUPPORTERS THAT ARE WAITING UNTIL SHE MAKES HER DECISION WOULD YEILD A BETTER RESULT FROM HER SUPPORTERS.

YET ANOTHER THREAT.  THE DEMS NEED TO MOVE ON.  FINISH THE RACE TODAY, WHEN THE POLLS CLOSE MOVE TO OBAMA AND END IT.

SEN. CLINTON IS CONTINUING TO PROVE THAT SHE IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN A TEAM PLAYER, THAT'S WHY SHE CANNOT BE VP. THE DEM NOMINEE CANNOT AFFORD TO HAVE SOMEONE AT THE BACK OF THE NOMINEE WHO IS WORKING FOR SELF.

JUST YESTERDAY PRESIDENT CLINTON BLAMED A VANITY FAIR ARTICLE ON SEN. OBAMA.  ICKE BLAMED THE PLAN PROPOSED BY THE MICHIGAN DEM PARTY ON SEN OBAMA ON EVERY NETWORK AND REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE GOV. OF MICH AND THE PEOPLE OF MI CRAFTED AND PROPOSED THIS PLAN.

THE DEMS DON'T NEED THIS LACK OF LOYALTY.  LET SEN. CLINTON AND ANY SUPPORTERS THAT WANT TO MOVE MOVE ON.

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY NOT ONLY WILL SURVIVE BUT WILL WIN IN NOVEMBER BECAUSE THERE ARE ACTUALLY LOYAL DEMOCRATS THAT WILL WORK HARD TO ENSURE THE VICTORY.

NO ONE ABSOLUTELY NO ONE SHOULD HAVE THIS KIND OF HOSTAGE MENTALITY IN THE PARTY.

ONE SPOKESPERSON SAID ON MSNBC CLINTON WOULD NOT CONCEDE BECAUSE SHE WANT TO HAVE LEVERAGE FOR VP.

CLINTON HAS YET TO UNDERSTAND THAT ATTEMPTING TO HOLD THE NOMINEE HOSTAGE WILL NOT and SHOULD NOT WORK.

IF CLINTON IS CHOSEN AS VP THE PARTY

SEN. CLINTON NEEDS TO SPIN HER TIME MENDING FENCES WITH THOSE ETHNIC GROUPS SHE SIGNIFICANTLY OFFENDED
