Those undecided Senate superdelegates

Posted: Tuesday, June 03, 2008 4:26 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Ken Strickland
Senate reporters chased down almost every uncommitted superdelegate they could catch in the hallways today, trying to find out who they'd endorse -- and when. Their majority leader, Harry Reid, seemed to set the timetable for the coming out parties. "I believe we should wait until after the primaries are finished," he said at his weekly news conference. "Sen. Clinton needs to be left alone. Let's get through the primary process."

Sen. Ken Salazar echoed that sentiment. "I think we need to allow an opportunity for Sen. Clinton to do what people expect that she's going to do," he said. "People need to give her space to get that done."

Salazar and Sen. Tom Harkin are organizing a meeting for the 16 other uncommitted super D's tomorrow morning. "We're meeting to discuss what -- if anything -- we might want to do as a group," Harkin told swarming reporters.

But tomorrow's meeting may be too late. Some members could endorse as soon as polls close tonight in South Dakota and Montana. Sen. Max Baucus, Montana's senior senator, said: "I was asked to go [to the meeting], but by tomorrow I will have declared. I'm going to endorse [Montana's] winner tonight."

And Sen. Russ Feingold seemed annoyed with the press' obsession with endorsements. He said he voted for Obama in his Wisconsin primary and plans on campaigning for him in the future. But he has not formally endorsed him. "I don't think it's necessary for me to make some kind of formal declaration," he said. "This notion here in this town that you have to sort of stick it in [Clinton's] eye is, I think, a mistake."

As a football coach for 19 years, one of thing I have learned is this.  In every contest there is a teacher and a student. Hillary and Bill Clinton for the last 28 years have always been the teachers.  However, in this contest they are they are now the students, Obama has overcame insurmountable odds.  He has overcome his race, age, experience, his wired name, his religious affiliations, his gaffes and one the fiercest competitors in political history in America the Clinton Dynasty.

We must all understand that what Obama has done is just purely remarkable and should not be taken lightly.  As a man of color myself I stand in awe and want to thank every American that can see beyond the outer layer of Obama and who has judged him by what’s in his heart and not by his outer layer.

To all the Hillary Clinton Supporters I hope you all can over come you disappointment and anger before November.  I will be the first with my arms open and embrace all of you.  I urge all of us Obama supporters to reach out to all the Clinton people and bring them in with love and understanding.  Tell the Clinton supporters we need them and we can’t do it with out them.  Welcome them to a new and better America and the Obama campaign that is set to lift America to a Higher Ground!

God Bless you all!
God Bless America!

He might not hit the actual number tonight but it won't matter, he has it and he should say he has it.

I plan to donate to Sen. Feingold's next campaign.  His annoyance at the press is SPOT ON.  Sen. Clinton deserves no disrespect.  Nor do her 17.92 million supporters.
Mr. Feingold et alia,
This is not about sticking anything in anyone's eye. It is about getting the job done.

Attitudes like those expressed by these senators are exactly the reason NOTHING GETS DONE IN WASHINGTON...

Politics as usual will not pass muster in Barack Obama's presidency.

Thank heaven for that!!!
This would be prosecution exhibit 1 in why the Senate is worthless as a legislative body. They are more concerned with protecting one person's feelings than they are in winning elections or passing legislation that makes the lives of Americans better.

"Politics ain't beanbag" - President Bill Clinton
I keep hearing Democratic "Leaders" and media "Pundits"  talk smugly about the future of the democratic party along with the forthcoming unity of the democratic public - and I can't help but wonder - Do they realize what they have done? And Yes THEY have done it.  This whole thing has DESTROYED our party.
They have relentlessly hammered the Clinton camp with absolute propaganda. While the "Sniper Fire" story "weighed so heavily" with voters - BO's background is quietly swept under the carpet. His "former" church of TWENTY YEARS is a place of racial divide and hate.
I have heard newscasters say that "Anyone who has gone to college and is educated should know better than to think BO's church is racist." I'm still trying to figure that one out. I did go to college. My education taught me to recognize what is racist. To spot hate. To work towards abolishing it. I was taught not to use words of hate. I have learned about the effects of such hate speech in our own history.

-------People marched. People spoke up. Laws were changed. Thoughts were changed. Our outlook on the future had changed. ------------

That is is the world that I live in. The world I studied in college. The remarks of BO's church are racist.  From the mouth of a black, white, yellow, red green WHATEVER this kind of talk equals HATE.
I have seen the arguments on tv. I have heard African Americans scold their white counterparts saying- "Have you ever been in a black church? No? So keep quiet. You don't know what you're talking about". I have been in many places of worship - Catholic, Baptist, Lutheran, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and yes Black The only one I EVER heard hate preached in was a Black Church. I will admit, it wasn't as bad as Rev. Wright, but hateful and shocking just the same. To say that BO  does not associate with these statements of hate is ludicrous.
These statements are nothing new for Rev. Wright. He has been preaching this hate for a long time. BO has been listening it for twenty years. When he couldn't attend because he was away at college, he got his hands on audio tapes. He has been sitting there listening to this trash with his wife and two children for 20 years. He must be held accountable for this. HE WAS THERE BECAUSE HE WANTED TO BE!  I, along with the people that I know, of all races, choose not to associate with racists. If we spot one - we avoid them. We don't associate with them. We don't try to change their view. YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE VIEWS OF A RACIST! We have no place for those kinds of people in our lives
BO is a self professed man of words. He has said numerous times that words are important . That words bring change. I agree with him. The power of change is injected in our society by the statements people make. By the words they use. Language is important.
Obama is flip flopping all over the place on this one. I can see the commercials now. Remember what they did to John Kerry for being a war hero on a swift boat? Does everyone think the Repubs are gonna back off and leave Obama alone?? Sad to say the answer is no - even sadder to say is more people will respond to the "HateChurch Boating" of BO
This whole campaign and the media's representation of it,  has caused many people to draw the line and take their sides on these issues as they deal with their feelings. The last thing that I think anyone expected to see is a new racial divide in the people of our country. Our parents apparently DID NOT deal fully deal with all of those issues and now they are rearing their ugly heads again.
This is NOT over if Clinton wins these states tonight. Obama made a   BIG mistake with his passive effort in these last primaries. We all know he effectively stopped campaigning after NC/ Indiana. But, Hillary will "spin" his weak finish to imply that he is a weak candidate whose popularity is waning and to suggest that he therefore  desperately needs her on the ticket to save the Dems's chances in November. So I am NOT excited. Hill  will set him up for impeachment after a year as President because, after all, she is STILL determined to be president and doesn't really care HOW she gets there.
Why is this all about walking on eggshells to protect Clinton's feelings ?? What about Obama getting to bask in his glory of becoming the Democratic nominee tonight ?? I am disappointed in these "superdelegates" who do not have the nerve to take a stand !!! Give Obama his due.

Why did Hillary lose?

Ans: Her vote on the Iraq Resolution.

Something Taylor Marsh and friends don't seem to get.
Tonight or tomorrow every American should feel a little more proud of our nation.  I'm feeling it.  The nomination of Barack Obama is a symbolic milestone for this great nation.  And we're still a young nation with time and a will to work towards more equal opportunities and protections.
Feingold is wrong.
Why is declaring who you are supporting equivalent to sticking your finger in the Clinton's eye? Why is everything about them?

Typical Sweetie (Sent Tuesday, June 03, 2008 1:14 PM)

On one hand I am exuberant about my candidate EARNING the nomination. On the other, I am appalled at the fierce hatred displayed by women such as “Typical Sweetie”.  I believe that there should be no less than EQUALITY for both “MEN” and “WOMEN” of any COLOR. I would ask that you put a realistic value to your discontent, and reflect the long term consequences of your decision. How will you explain your hatred driven choice to your children? I can only hope the voters, such as “Typical Sweetie” will be able to vote their conscience.
.
The alternative is an Emotional Old Man wandering aimlessly in the Whitehouse rattling his sword.

Our Troops deserve more than your scorn. In fact a vote as described above, shows only contempt for our Service Men and Women forced to return to an ill conceived battle, as well as America herself.

Display your Intelligence.

Life is Good.
FRAUD!!!

A super going AGAINST the popular vote in MA and MSNBC suggesting ALL undeclared supers do the same???!!!

OHHHHHH NOOOOO!!!

Where are all my fellow-bloggers who said that if Hillary supers did that - they would revolt!

My, how hypnotic is this hypocrisy?!
WOW MSNBC REPORTED Two polls released by the American Research Group this morning found a statistical tie in Montana and a lopsided lead for Clinton in South Dakota.

Maybe the supers are worried he will lose both primaries today, That would be very embarrasing for the presumptive noominee?

----------------------------------------

Grain of salt...there hasn't been any consistent polling being done in either state...only 2 polls have been made public.

ARG's poll this weekend showed Clinton by 26.

Dakota Wesleyan University released the only other poll back in March showing Obama by 12.

ARG's been a little suspect this primary season.  Their final poll before Iowa showed Clinton by 9 when it turned out she finished 3rd with Obama winning by 8 over Edwards.  Also, in the lead-in to Pennsylvania they went from Clinton by 20 to a tie.

SurveyUSA did a report card that showed ARG as 26th in terms of accuracy (meaning how close did their last poll get to the final margin in the actual voting) with an average 7-point error.  This is also dead last when looking at all pollsters who have done surveys in at least 10 states this primary season.
I plan to donate to Sen. Feingold's next campaign.  His annoyance at the press is SPOT ON.  Sen. Clinton deserves no disrespect.  Nor do her 17.92 million supporters.

the sentiment in your post is what ticks off hillary supporters to the point of voting mccain.  yes, you do have to give us respect, and respect our candidate, because guess what? She'll be your guy's VP.  What do you have to say about that, cybil?
This is why government moves at a snails pace.  Why nothing gets done.  Everyone second guessing their own move.  Simple question are you in or are you out?  Make a discision for God's sake!!!!!!!

WTF..how can a Senator not understand the importance of superdelegates endorsing a candidate?  Has this guy not watched the news for the last 6 months? IF you made up your mind so long ago, then what's the big deal about declaring.  Get off the pot and end this mess.
It is interesting that Democrats embrace the notion that there is some debt to be paid to Hillary Clinton and that her feelings ought to be respected.

I do not think that Republicans felt this way about Huckabee or Ron Paul.  When it ended it ended and that was that.

I would say that this is just Democrats exhibiting basic human decency.  Except this is politics and usually there is no place for decency there.

It would be interesting to know which this is on the part of the Democrats:  politics or decency.
Russ Feingold  refusing to declare . thats a laugh, i'd be more then happy to stick it for him. shes out tearing the heart of the democtate party apart ony for pesonal reason and he wont declare geeeee russ get a life OR WHAT IS IT ? DO YOU OWE BILL AND HILLARY TOO? I voted for a clinton twice and never will that happen again
How is it "sticking it in Clinton's eye" for these embarassingly spineless superdelegates to finally get around to endorsing?  They could have, and should have, ended this weeks ago.  The deference to Clinton looks like the good old weak Democratic party, just as the Republicans have always portrayed us.  For God's sake, get some cahones, get off the fence, and make the decision you know is inevitable so we can finally take this country back from Bush and McCain.
This is NOT about Senator Clinton. This is NOT about sticking it in Senator Clinton's eye. These people are morons.

This is about Senator Obama's historic Presidential nomination, and giving him a well-earned opportunity to address the nation tonight after Clinton concedes the race and endorses him -

Any and every smart Democrat needs to deeeply understand what tonight SHOULD be -

Let's see if our so called "leaders" figure it out.
Hey, Jill, wrong blog.  I think you meant to go to Red State or Free Republic, where the other so-called feminist Clinton supporters are swearing their allegiance to the pro-life, pro-war John McCain.
Amazing.  Obama has basically won the nomination and everyone is worried about Hillary.  If it wasn't Hillary, no one would be acting like this!  So instead of reveling in something historical, we have to make sure that Hillary's feelings aren't hurt and that we can declare this historical moment when it is ok with her.

Democrats deserve to loss! It's amazing how you guys knock the Clinton's when they made our party great. When I read your childish comments about the Clintons, I just want to stay home on election day & see if you can do it without us. How does President McCain sound? That's what you are going to get.
Kate in Atlanta,

My dear sister, I would love nothing more than to see the balloons, and confetti fall, while Obama basks unabashedly in his victory.

But I am looking at the big picture, and considrering the larger issue of the state of our nation.

This is not about our beloved candidate. It is about our beloved country.

My concerns are not for Hillary's feelings. My concern is for Hillary's supporters, and their feelings.

The post earlier today of 'The Diary of A Deanite', has everything to do with what I posted about how I hope tonight's event should be respectfully restrained.

I have every confidence that Obama will make the right decision, that may not necessarily be in lock step with me in the peanut gallery.

Thanks for your response.

G-D bless us, everyone.
Capt Smash, well said.

Senator Obama NEEDS the Clinton supporters and now that this is 99% over, I trust that ALL true Dems, and certainly all Obama supporters, are going to portray the same message that their soon-to-be nomiee espouses - graceful winning of the nomination.

If you have other things on your mind in terms of addressing Sen Clinton and/or her supporters, just look at how Obama has referenced (even revered) Senator Clinton in his remarks over the last 5-6 weeks.

He understands that while polls show him already in front of Senator McCain (notice how I address each person with respect by using their title and correct spelling of their names), Obama also knows that in order to stay in front and to get further in front, he needs those 17+ million voters that went to the polls for Clinton.  And he's not going to do anything to upset that apple cart.

Which by the way, is the same thing Senator Feingold is trying to do. Don't push any faster than necessary on Clinton, it's going to happen.  It's over and she knows her valiant efforts will have her coming up just a little short. So, don't rub her face in it and then expect her to come out on the other side fighting for you.  That's crazy and all you'll do is jeaopardize a likely win in November.

So, again, TRUE Dems and TRUE Obama supporters from here forward are the ones who are displaying positive, unified reasoning in terms of getting the Dems a victory in November. Anybody else are just the chaos and disorder people (chaos and disorder is the title to a Prince album - terrible by the way) that Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity sent this way to create a schism.  People who wanted Clinton will be behind Obama becuase their platforms are virtually identical, and people who want Obama will be polite and ebullient so as to not run away those critical votes that are needed to get a Dem back in the White House and end the last 6-8 years of terrible governance.
