From NBC's Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell
Hillary Clinton today held a conference call with New York's congressional delegation -- including Reps. Charlie Rangel, Joe Crowley, Steve Israel, Nydia Velasquez, and Nita Lowey, according to a source familiar with the call.

Per the source, Clinton emphasized the nearly 18 million votes she's won, and her campaign's impact on the agenda of the Democratic Party and the nation. Tonight, she is planning to reflect on her campaign -- how proud and grateful she is, as well as how remarkable her campaign has been.

She WILL NOT be dropping out tonight, Clinton added on the call, per the source -- she has earned the right to reflect on what is the best way forward. She wants time to catch her breath and wants time to determine the best way forward.

And then on the call, the source says, Velasquez remarked that the only way Latinos will support the Democratic ticket is if Clinton is on the ticket. At that point, Clinton said that if Obama asked her to be on the ticket, she would be interested in that.

Rangel -- who was the first to suggest that Clinton run for the Senate in 2000 -- confirmed to NBC News that Clinton did tell the participants on the conference call that she would be interested in running for vice president.

On the subject of Clinton and the vice presidency, Rangel told NBC that "certainly to the extent that she will do anything to win ... she'll be available"

"She'll do whatever is needed -- if people think it would help she'd do it," he added.

Rangel acknowledged that "Obama and Clinton's followers feel more strongly about the outcome than the candidates. Both of them need time to show their followers how important it is to take her."

He then added, "I really think if they want to win this they have to run together."

Just say NO to Trojan Horse Republicans like Hillary Clinton. Americans will vote Democrat this election without having to be conned into it with Clintonian triangulation. Thanks, but no thanks, Hillary. Go spend some time with your war-mongering buddies like Lieberman and McCain.
I'm an Obama suporter.  Never before in history have a loser demands a vp spot.  LOOK, america that shows that Mrs Clinton make the rule to fit her needs. She wouldn't have put Obama as her vp.

I don't think she'll help but she'll destroy Obama if she's vp.

What is the main job of the VP? Is it not to take charge in the event something happens to the President? Let us not forget, that Hillary just recently suggest (or perhaps has planned) this might happen.
I agree with the comments here that says we all need to sit back and take a few deep breaths. It's up to barack to choose who HE wants as V.P. It's not the choice of Rengel, Ausman, or anyone else. At the moment, the idea of Hillary on the ticket infuriates me. However, next week I may see things in a different light.

I'm just worried that the republicans will come out in full force just to vote against the name Clinton. I don't think her supporters understands the hatred that republicans have for the Clinton name. Nothing will unify the republican party more than the name Clinton. Why do you think Rush Limbaugh was begging republicans to vote for her. That's what scares me.
please no !!!she said, mccain and herself have experience and Obama has only speech .no no!
Please. Do not put Clinton on the ticket.
How can she possibly be his VP after all of the horrible things she has said about Obama.
I think one of the snarky critics said Obama would have to have a food taster if he got in with Hillary as VP. Personally I think WESLEY CLARK would be the best running mate for Obama, but given what a disaster Bush has been, being able to credibly say you'll go to a policy more like Bill Clinton's would not be seen as so bad when running against Grandpa McSame. Also, expect a number of people from Clinton's era in Cabinet and other jobs, but I don't think that'll be seen as so bad, either.

I think he can win it with Hillary.
I have voted republican for the last 40 years but would vote for Obama this election UNLESS Old Hillary is his running mate.  She and Bill are the two most conniving low manipulative politicians I have seen in my 71 years of life.  I had hoped to see a female president before I was dirt napping but not her - anyone but her!!!!
Can Bill stay home???? Or at least shut his mouth????
You really want those two going into the White house together? The same bickering you've got now would keep going because they'd be fighting over star power. She should go back to the Senate and contently take her place as the Congress' arguably most powerful Democrat.

And yes, an Obama-Hillary ticket to me reads "Clinton '08," so I'd switch to McCain.
If you want to lose the election in November put "Clinton" on the ballot. Or abortion, or gay marriage. Those are the only three words that are strong enough to wake up a tired, deflated GOP nut-base. Talk about political suicide. Obama's not that dumb.
as a democrat, I find it hypocritical to say that on the argument of popular vote we have to ignore Hillary's arguments, didnt we make the gore/bush florida debacle all about the fact that Gore had the popular vote?  Our partyy has devolved into taking away votes from the people and subverting the peoples will and democratic votes with the fact that we even have superdelegates.  As for me, I'm voting republicans, at least they wont steal my vote.
She adds nothing to the ticket.  Obama needs someone like Jim Webb, who has a deep resume that includes his military and defense background, and is well-respected on both sides of the aisle.
I know of 25 long term Dems including me who will go Indep or Rep. in Nov if she's not on the ballot.  The
DNC Rules and Bylaws stole half her votes and we're mighty mad in Fla.  He's too liberal for us...Dr.Williams
Mike Furlong of who cares from where.....

Good Christian Lady?????? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLLOLL.....STEP AWAY FROM YOUR CRACK PIPE DUDE
please no !!!she said, mccain and herself have experience and Obama has only speech .no no!
So Nydia Velasquez speaks for all Latinos. Interesting.

I'm sure they'll all vote against their own interests because they didn't get their first choice. I'm sure they'll behave like children because Hillary didn't get her way.

Obama would make a mockery of his candidacy if he chose her, and I can't for the life of me believe it will happen.
Please no HRC on the ticket!  Just say NO Obama!!!
I didnt know MSNBC is read by Demos only.

CHANGE Barack HUSSEIN Obama, not America!
"On the subject of Clinton and the vice presidency, Rangel told NBC that "certainly to the extent that she will do anything to win ... she'll be available"

"She'll do whatever is needed -- if people think it would help she'd do it," he added."

This is exactly why Obama must not allow this sameless human being in his '08 ticket. And one more small reason: BILL.
NO~NO~NO~ TO HILLARY ON BARAK'S TICKET...AS THAT WILL LEAD TO BILL CLINTON, HOGGING THE LIMELIGHT "ALL THE TIME" PLEASE USA PEOPLE COME OUT AND STOP THE MADDNESS OF A TICKET WITH (ANY) CLINTON ON IT!!!!
Don't do it!!

She's all wrong.  NO. CLINTONS.
PLEASE POST!!!

It is appalling to have a superdelagate of hispanic descent, say that the hispanic community will not vote for Obama if hillary is not on the ticket!!! I am hispanic and voting for Obama!!! I guess Ms. Valasquez meant, the stolen SS# ,used by undocumented , illeagal immigrants to vote won't be used to help obama like it helped hillary with the popular tally!!!! Wow!!! Hispanics are not white, so stop acting like you want to be!!! remember your job application? what did you check off?  Hispanics for obama, time for change!
Plain and simple Obama needs her more than she needs him....  He can't carry the blue collar vote or the hispanic vote... His campaign will be a complete joke in November if Hillary is not on ticket.  So all of you Obamatrons who hate hillary clinton.  Wake up.. Your candidate has no chance at winning the election without her.  How ironic
I hope they add Hillary!!  Yes sir....please.  That makes his 'independence' now weakened by playing Dem party ball...disolutions some of his die-hards, appeases the Clinton/Dem 'cronies network'...and will drive the undecided/marginal that will decide this election......STRAIGHT FOR McCAIN ! ! Think about it....look how influenctial Hillary was as the Pres' wife...think about Obama having to deal with her as a VP...and Bill in the wings...In fact, would Obama really be Pres in reality...a hamstrung one at best.  As a conservative, should McCain loose, I feel less worried about an Obamo/XYZ VP.  Why...because I believe he does want to change things/shake them up, and with Billary, he'll be limited.  What the big O needs to do is pick up a conservative Dem...white boy (being funny)...to win the middle of the roaders.
Without Hillary on the ticket Obama is done, stick a fork in him.  Obama = McGovern
It would be a disaster for Obama to choose Hillary ("two-for-the-price-of-one") for his VP.  The Clintons have too much baggage (read Vanity Fair) and create too much divisive DRAMA.  The country is exhausted by them.  The Clintons need counseling.

On another note--thank you for First Read--it's well written and always interesting. Special thanks to Chuck Todd.  You have not favored any particular candidate, rather you've remained true to the numbers, true to the math--and it has been stimulating fun to do the math with you. I'm an Obama supporter and your math is music to my ears, especially today.
Sorry Hillary - No soup for you.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Latinos will not vote for a black man, huh? Well, lots of other people did and will.

There are pros and cons to Hillary as VP. First, how will she explain all the negative things she said about Obama when she was running against him? The Republicans will probably be running her 3:00 a.m. ads, her comments about Obama being nothing but a bunch of speeches, her comments about Obama's lack of experience, etc., How is Hillary going to take all that back? Hillary's own words will be used to attack Obama.

Secondly, I don't think Hillary and Bill will stay in the background. Thirdly, Hillary doesn't match Obama's message of change.

On the positive side, Hillary could bring some of her bloc of older white female voters. But her bloc of WV, KY and Latino racists will still not vote for Obama. That bloc votes Republican.
That would be a big NO WAY!!!!
If HRC wants the VP spot she will have it.  No super-delegate is going to say NO to the Clinton's twice.  I have supported Obama since day 1 and was outraged about some of the campaign tactics from Clinton, however, this is politics. If Obama taps Clinton on the shoulder for VP, I will fall in line behind them because McCain doesn't even know what he stands for anymore.
Please Obama do not put her on ticket.  There are plenty of good individuals to make your VP.  She will cause more trouble than she is worth as VP. Can't be second in anything and is only willing to do so she has chance to be president in the future.  Enough of the Hill show. If all you Democrats thinking putting her on the ticket will give Obama the win think again.  Republicans will come out in droves in the election just to keep her out of White House.  She is that disliked.  Obama has chance to win if he picks the right running mate NOT Hill.
'...Velasquez remarked that the only way Latinos will support the Democratic ticket is if Clinton is on the ticket...'

WHO IS REP> VELASQUEZ ?
I'VE NEVER HEARD OF HIM

Who does he claim to speak for ?
I'm Latino and he DOESN'T SPEAK FOR ME !!

WHO THE HELL DOES HE THINK HE IS ?

Tht's NOT the way to blackmail a campaign !!
Nydia Velasquez does not speak for me nor all hispanics.  I am an Obama fan and will always be....
Just say NO, Barack.  You don't need her and country doesn't want her.
He will be LUCKY if she joins his team.  She brings experience, intelligence and lots of women supporters if she agrees.  Though I'm not totally convinced it's over.
Don't you know that Hillary, late at night, has wondered to herself, "Why didn't I ask Barack Obama to be my VP running mate right after his DNC speech in 2004?"  That what if version or these new rumblings are both "dreams"
AFTER 48 DEATHS THAT HAVE OCCURRED DURING THE CLINTON'S POLITICAL CAREERS-THEY CANNOT EXPLAIN; BARACK OBAMA SHOULD NOT PUT HIMSELF IN A POSITION FOR HRC TO PLAN AND EXECUTE HIS DEMISE ON DAY ONE.  I KNOW THAT HE AND MICHELLE ARE SMARTER THAN THAT.  HILLARY WOULD MAKE A GREAT HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES SECRETARY WHERE SHE WOULD DO THE MOST GOOD FOR WE BLUE COLLAR/HARD WORKING FOLKS.

GREENSBORO, NC
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Talk about a three ring circus with Obama playing President in the Oval Office, Hillary playing in the 'catbird seat' and Bill playing with the interns!!
Barack Obama has been affiliated with the most leftwing elements in Chicago politics for twenty years (Bill Ayers of SDS, Rev. Wright and Father Pfleger).  He is not fit to be our president.  Although I have voted for every Democratic candidate since John Kennedy, I am voting this time for John McCain.  If you supported Hillary Clinton, please vote for Senator McCain.
NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,NO,----------WHY AM I SEEING SO MANY UNFAMILAR NAMES ON HERE, AND SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY CLINTON SUPPORTERS? I KNOW SHE GOT 17 MILLION+ VOTES BUT HILLARY AND BILL CLINTON WOULD BE A DISASTER. PLEASE STOP ENCOURAGEING THIS TICKET. WE CAN UNITE IN OTHER WAYS. I AM AGAIN DISAPOINTED IN THE CLINTONS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS TRYING TO STRONG ARM SEN. OBAMA INTO CHOOSING HER FOR VP.
I think a Christian/Muslim ticket would work well! Obama/Clinton
1st AP: you guys love to jump the gun.....  I know you love the drama and being able to say "we got the big story first," but your credibility has been exposed during this primary season, and the public will not forget how biased, opinionated, and unfair your coverage has been.... oh, did I mention sexist also?!?!

2nd: It's presumptuous and naive that the DNC members and Democratic leaders are talking about party unity after the rules and committee meetings.  Far from it...  The fact is 17.6 million people have cast their vote for Hillary Clinton.  Obama and Hillary are separated by .1% difference (even if you give Obama the "uncommitted" from Michigan, Clinton still leads him.  (See RealClear Politics)  The point is by no measure has this been a landslide win (one way or the other) as the media loves to try and portray.  Also, I think it's extremely important and relevant to point out that Clinton beat Obama in the pledged delegates awared through the primary system but lost to him due to the caucus system.  In other words, she would be securing the nomination now if the “undemocratic” caucus system did not have so much weight behind it.  Party insiders and DNC members (& Obama supporters) can talk about breaking rules all day long and about the fact that the caucus system is part of the nomination process; however, MOST voters believe the caucus system to be completely undemocratic and a ridiculous way to nominate.  NOT all Americans can participate!!!  Get it?  How is this democratic?  When you consider Clinton beat Obama in the primary delegate count (in which 33.5 million voters awarded her more delegates than Obama), and when you consider the only reason he beat her is because 1.1 million voters awarded him more delegates in the caucus process, you can easily come to the conclusion and understanding that Americans are angry, disenfranchised, and once again have been undermined as the "process" pushed our strongest candidate out.  How can 1.1 million voters have more clout than 33.5 million voters?  Another way to put it, how can a candidate win the popular vote in a state like Nevada & Texas and be awarded more delegates than the other candidate through the primary process but then lose the overall total delegates in that state because of the caucus system? This point PROVES that the caucus system is disjointed from the primary/popular vote system, and that the caucus system does NOT represent the entire population in a state.  It only represents those willing and ABLE to spend an entire day (or more) in a closed-door election process.  What a crazy system!  (When I made calls on behalf of the Clinton Campaign to voters in caucus states, they had NO IDEA what a caucus was or why they should have to participate!)  Add my point about the diluted nominating system to the fact that the media has sandblasted Clinton through this entire process to the fact that the Obama bloggers have been drunk on their own candidate and completely ruthless in their statements about Clinton and her supporters, and add in the fact that more people voted for her than any other candidate (last I checked, Obama’s name was not “uncommitted”), and add the fact that she dominated Obama in the must win swing states, and you have 17.6 million angry, dumbfounded, and put off voters.

It's ironic that Democrats bitch for 8 years that Bush stole the election because of an unfair process (a process in which Bush lost the popular vote but won the electoral votes to secure the nomination), but this year Democrates seem to be switching sides and arguing the "rules are the rules" and the "process is the process."  We remember Democrats, do you?  Well.....the process is once again flawed, and democrats are once again up for a nail-bitter in the fall.  Obama may have money, power, and influence (which makes DNC members and Democratic leaders twitch with giddy delight and opportunistic glee), BUT Hillary Clinton has the voter support-- the core democratic base, the swing states, and the electoral votes needed to hand McCain his lunch in the fall.  So, we put in our second sting player….  Thanks Democrats!  You've lost your focus....our goal is/was to take back the White House and give Americans back a Democratic leader!

The ONLY way for you to salvage your reputations and unit the party to win in the fall is to offer Clinton the VP slot.  If you don't........good luck to you.  I'm one of those millions that will be registering independent or sitting this one out.  Why?  As much as I fear McCain running for 4 or 8 years, I am a voter that is sick to death of being overlooked, undermined, and tossed aside.  If you Democratic leaders can chance losing the White House because you are so wrapped up in money, power, and influence and the security and prosperity of your own ***es and jobs, I'm too willing to chance losing the White House TO PROVE TO YOU THAT---IT'S ABOUT THE VOTERS STUPID!  STOP undermining us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The primary campaign has shown a bitter side of politics in the Democratic party. It will be a weak ticket rather than a dream ticket. Senator Clinton's has too much baggage, and will greatly hurt Senator Obama's chances. John Edwards would be a much better choice, he has not built the animosity that Sen. Clinton has.
First, I will acknowledge that I am not a Clinton supporter, never have been (or will be, most likely), and - until a year ago - was a registered Republican.  I will be voting for Obama this election.

I, for one, do not believe Clinton when she claims to express interest in the VP position with Obama. I have felt for some time now that she only continues in the race because she wants to further damage relations between Obama and her followers. In my opinion, her ego is such that she could never accept a number two position; her ego would not allow it - an ego and lust for power that kept her with a man most women would have dumped "way back when;" an ego that wants to be President - not VP.

By continuing in this race when most people said she should concede to solidify the party, she just fuels the fire of anger towards Obama.  By "expressing an interest" in the VP slot, she only puts Obama in more hot water when he selects someone else - and I have to believe he will because there has been too much ill will expressed between them (of which she took the lead). By keeping that anger towards Obama "alive and well" in her supporters, she knows there is a greater chance McCain beats Obama in this election and she has more of a chance to run again in four years as the "savior" of the Democratic party.  And - YES - I do believe she would put herslf ahead of the good of the Democratic party and the American people.

All the talk about her pledging her support to Obama when he wins the nomination - for the good of the party and the country - is (admittedly, IN MY OPINION) just more of the same old political crap that we have seen all too often from Washington and the cronies who feed off the scraps of crap politicians toss out on a regular basis.

I am one of those disenchanted Americans who has become sick and tired of politicians places the good of the country in position number 3 - BEHIND their own good and interests and the "party's" best interests. Clinton is simply more of the same thing - her "change" is simply a change of the party that's doing the damage. Obama offers an opportunity to make a change in the way our government opperates and the way we - as a great nation - can regain our lost stature in the world.
I think if Barack Obama wants to win in November, it is nearly mandatory for him to put Hillary Clinton on the ticket. I don't believe he will be able to put together enough electoral college votes, especially in the swing states without her. Additionally, her ablility to bring women, older voters, and white working class democrats in the lower income brackets into the fold is extremely valuable.
why does he have to feel obligated to put her on his ticket I don't understand?  If women especially don't want to vote for him than don't than they take the chance of putting McCain in office and having women's rights like Roe vs Wade overturned and women's rigts to abortion extinct.  If women and white working class people want to shoot themselves in the foot by going against a democrat than let them deal with the consequences.  Obama can win without them he doesn't need Clinton on the ticket.  the other problem if Hillary can't control Bill on the campaign trail how is he going to handle himself as the vice-presidents husband and how much will his temper and rage over take the White House and do you really think he will actually be okay with Barack Obama being President and having to answer to him?  Get real.........
