McCain knocks Obama in kickoff speech

Posted: Tuesday, June 03, 2008 10:49 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
KENNER, LA -- In a much-anticipated general election kickoff speech tonight, John McCain at once distanced himself from the current president, alluded to the Democrats' meandering path to the nomination, depicted Barack Obama as both inexperienced and beholden to special interests, and described Obama's major line of attack against him as a disingenuous scam.

Kicking off a 30-minute speech rife with criticisms of his newly minted rival, he warned that "you will hear from my opponent's campaign in every speech, every interview, every press release that I'm running for President Bush's third term."

McCain went on to accuse Barack Obama of an almost mindless repetition of that "false" notion. "He tries to drum it into your minds by constantly repeating it rather than debate honestly the very different directions he and I would take the country," he said.

The speech, scheduled to grab a slice of the primetime cable's political audiences, was set on the outskirts of New Orleans, Louisiana, a city that epitomizes for many the incompetence of governance during the Bush years. McCain used the backdrop to describe his history of head-butting with the unpopular current administration. "He and I have not seen eye to eye on many issues," he said of Bush. "We've disagreed over the conduct of the war in Iraq and the treatment of detainees; over out-of-control government spending and budget gimmicks; over energy policy and climate change; over defense spending that favored defense contractors over the public good."

As the sun set on an epic battle for the Democratic nomination, McCain's speech started off with the first decree -- from the mouth of one of its elite group of finalists -- that the primary season is officially at an end. "Tonight," he began, "we can say with confidence the primary season is over, and the general election campaign has begun."

McCain quickly offered a warm verbal embrace of that primary season's loser, his one-time nemesis Hillary Clinton. "The media often overlooked how compassionately she spoke to the concerns and dreams of millions of Americans, and she deserves a lot more appreciation than she sometimes received," he said, going on to note -- as he did in Nashville yesterday -- the historic trail that she has blazed. "As the father of three daughters, I owe her a debt for inspiring millions of women to believe there is no opportunity in this great country beyond their reach."

But for the almost-crowned Democratic nominee, McCain showed little such love. After pointing the finger at Obama for artificially strapping him to Bush's back, he continued his ongoing laundry list of grievances with Obama's stances on Iraq, meetings with rogue leaders, and strategies for energy independence. He described Obama as an inexperienced partisan beholden to special interests and reliant on big-government solutions. "That's not change we can believe in," he pronounced throughout the speech, mockingly referencing Obama's campaign slogan.

The 71-year old senator also took a shot as the age of his rival, 25-years his junior.  "You know, I have a few years on my opponent," he quipped, eliciting laughter and applause from the audience of over 500 at Kenner's Pontchartrain Center. "So I am surprised that a young man has bought in to so many failed ideas." In contrast to Obama's youth, he called the Illinois senator's proposed policies "old" and "tired" strategies that need not be "dusted off" again.

Without mentioning Obama by name in one section of his remarks, he also alluded to an arrogance that opponents depict as a motivator of Obama's youthful political career. "I don't seek the presidency on the presumption I'm blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save my country in its hour of need," he said. "I seek the office with the humility of a man who cannot forget my country saved me."

And, notably, he was not shy about describing Obama's path to the nomination as one that bucked the popular vote and relied heavily on influence from party elites. "Pundits and party elders have declared that Senator Obama will be my opponent," he said, soon after wrapping up his enthusiastic praise for Clinton. "He will be a formidable one. But I'm ready for the challenge, and determined to run this race in a way that does credit to our campaign and to the proud, decent and patriotic people I ask to lead."

Alright Johnny, lets here it. Exactly how are you going to be different?
I'm so happy all of the networks cut awayfrom his McCain's speech to anounce the win for Barack in Montana. McCain is going to lose really bad in Nov.

The first debate will determine just how bad McCain will lose. McCain is McBush and is too slow, too out of touch to hang with Obama.

Obama 08
Obama is winning Montana by 20 point so far!!!
McCain looked like a very weak candidate, amongst a very lack luster, unenthusiastic crowd, that sounded like they had been riden hard, and put up wet!

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!
Summing up tonight's speeches...

Clinton: "Me. Me. Me."
McCain: "Him. Him. Him."
Obama: "Us. Us. Us."
I cannot wait to see these two debate.  It will be interesting to see how well he talks when his opponent is standing next to him.

I simply cannot imagine a McCain presidency because everything he has done and said leads me to believe that a vote for him would be a vote for war with Iran.
what a crazy night.
I am so pumped to see the contrast between the opponents coming up this fall!  Post the McCain/Obama Speeches back to back!

DEMOCRATS UNITE!
Great speech from a guy who obviously doesn't need a teleprompter to string more than two sentences together!
Loved his response to McCain's charge about visiting Iraq. Give that old man a US map and get out his flack jacket. He's got some more markets to visit.
McCain "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah"  No substance whatsoever!  He is sooooo boring and doesn't even lie very well.  All the republican drapings will not work this time.  I am patriotic, I am white, I am female, I am christian, I am southern and I am voting for Barack Obama for President of the United States of America!  Thank you Lord! Thank You!

John McBush has showed that he is not truthful in the slightest bit. That grin an pause thing he is doing is straight from the Bush playbook. To be honest I could see him performing that laugh grin thing wearing a trenchcoat. It was really creepy. His speach was totally a sleep inducing experience. The fact that he had to hold his rally an hour outside of New Orleans yet claimed he was in New orleans makes you wonder is he Really Losing His Bearings. Now the speech by Senator Obama was excellent. For all of you that did not notce he does not use a telepromter ,like John McBush.John McBush instead of trying to interject yourself into the media with a very drab performance ,stand back soak in the truth .  You Are A Bush Hugger At It's Worst When you vote In Alignment With That Failure of An Adminstration 95% of Your Votes. John McBush= 4 more years of George Bush Policy Failures.
He gave a great speech...
Goes to show Obama as nothing but your ham and egg tax and spend liberal who has no idea what the heck he is doing and how his policies will damage American business and cause more and more people to lose their jobs.
Old Man's yelling at clouds again.
Honestly, McCain acted like he couldn't read the prompter. He squinted, then looked shocked by what he was reading.

Doesn't he read these speech beforehand?

His speech vs Obama's is barbershop quartets vs rock n roll.
Soooo..he distances himself from Bush AFTER his private fundraiser last week? Can he NOT flip flop on something???
What we need from the media (or from youtube) is to run McCain's and Obama's speeches side by side.  If that happens, and it gets distributed widely, it's game over.
Well I guess Grampy McSame had to speak first so he could trot off to bed. After all, a man his age needs his rest...

...and how exactly do you distance yourself from someone whom you cast 95% of your senate votes in support of? He'll need Houdini (that's a reference to his uh...advanced age) to make that voting record disappear...

Obama '08/'12
this is bizarre.  she is taking her 18MM voters?  seriously?  Only 25% said they would defect and he picks up way more than that in independents and republicans who have truly had enough.  I want to be gracious.  I want to heal and offer olive branches; but she just keeps poking us with them.  She just kills me.  Where does she get off?  or more importantly, when?
Now we get to deal with McCain's Old As*

He is such a sell out to the American People... He was desperate to be President so he sold his soul to the Devil AKA "Karl Rove"
To All of us Obama Supporters ,we did a very fine job defending our candidate. We must keep up the hard work because there will be more attacks by the republican attack machine and spiteful Hillary Clinton Supporters. The Clinton supporters will hopefully come around when reality sets in,just try to understand that they are lashing out in frustration due inpart the the outrageous claims of their candidate leading up to this moment. So dont be angry with themjust incurrage them to come back to the party.

That is absolutely brilliant.  On the money!
Obama kicks ass
I've admired John McCain. Barack Obama inspires me. Now let the men of the "straight talk express" and the "new politics" honestly and intelligently debate the issues. Don't let the nastiness of the old political ways dominate. BTW-Congratulations Sen. Obama!
Obama needs to go back to the way of campaigns back in the early 1800's.  Travel with your opponent - speak at the same places.

Seriously - can anyone actually listen to a McCain speech without falling asleep (which is probably good for him because he consistently makes mistakes in what he's saying).
I wonder what kind of president McCain would be? He has not been able to choose his running mate, though he had ample time in his hand.  That itself goes to show his inaptitude and incapacity to make decision.
Obama has said that he will not "call names" or engage in "smear tactics"; but make no mistake Sen. McCain, we are watching this election very closely, and if you can't toe the line and talk to us about issues; the voters will hand out the the punishments!!
Now, HRC said she needs people to go to her website and help her decide what to do now.  If you notice, her site will have a pop up with a statement of support so it seems she will claim "x" number of people support her.

BUT, you can go to:

and select "suggestion" and PLEASE BE NICE and ask her to HEARTILY endorse Obama and start the healing and way forward.
Per the above comments, PMSNBC is certainly not conservative land so hey all you libs, listen to this.  A vote for Obama is a vote for Osama.  This guy is weak and will capitualte to the terrorists.  If BHO is elected, it will just speed up the inevitable; that someday America will be defeated because you libs all live in a utopian dream world.  But wait...there is still hope!  Just leave the darkside and come into the light.  Do not underestimate John McCain as he is neither lib nor con.  I still have faith that there are enough sound minded Americans left to keep us a bit safer, a bit longer.  But someday you libs will take us all down the toilet.  Its simple guys...#1 is national security and #2 is the family institution, neither of which Obama has a clue about.

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" . . . God, I can't wait for the debates to begin.
What on earth was with the McCain speech?  Did anyone but me wonder if those people really wanted to be there?
Seemed to me that the crowd's response to McCain was a bit tepid. He paused a few times for an audience response that never came. I
Jason from MI--

That's great! I love your summary--right on!
DEAR JOHN, Did you see Obamas speech???????????????
Tonight, we have turned the page on the past and picked up the pen to write the new progressive chapter of American history.

http://www.politivine.com
McCain is going to get trounced in the general. There is a clear, fundamental difference between him and Obama and the majority of the country agrees with the latter!
Here's what I see. McBush had 500 people in LA to see him. Obama had 17,000 inside the center and 15,000 OUTSIDE who couldn't get in. Can't fight the hope baby!
Does anyone wonder if McBush's location choice has anything to do with his VP search?
Sen Obama gave John McCain a big Lesson on Loyalty to the American People Not IRAQ

If MCCAIN SPENT AS MUCH TIME ADDRESSING AND GETTING TO KNOW THOSE AMERICANS LOOSING JOBS, PENSIONS, PAYING HIGH GAS PRICES, PAYING EDUCATION COSTS ETC

HE WOULD NOT BE MAKING IRAQ HIS PRIARITY WHILE THESE SAME AMERICANS ARE PAYING HIS SALARY.
McCain is a better candidate. Obamas lack of depth will become evident. What will all you do when       McCain picks Lieberman to be his VP?
John McCain showed America how he is going to conduct this election season, the same old tired speeches attacking the person you are running against. Nothing specific, just anything that can get some group up in arms against the other candidate. He talks about Obamas youth, but he will be offended if someone mentions that he is 71 years old. Who can he find that is not young for his VP , "youth is a dirty word", there must be some person available that is around 65 or older! McCain get a grip and do us all a favor - ask Obama for the VP slot.
Did anyone notice McCain's new “A Leader We Can Believe In.” background?
If Obama would make such a bad leader why is everyone copying his campaign slogans?
First everyone switched to some sort of "change" campaign during the primaries, and now that Obama has won the Dem nomination the Repubs and McCain obviously borrowed most of their "new" slogan.

OBAMA '08
wow. that was far from moving. looks like bearings lost, eh? what a knuckle.  think a 3 a.m. phone call would wake that guy up????
Hopefully, obama has brushed up on his debating skills.
Great speech, Senator McCain.  Thanks for the respect you have always shown Senator Clinton.  You are a class act.
It would have been interesting to see McCain/Clinton debating the issues, but I guess it wasn't meant to be.  Instead, our country can look forward to 5 mos. of the obama circus.

McCain2008
McCain will lose in debates with Obama. Obma has WAY better oratory skills. If they stick to the issues, mcCain will not SURPASS Obama on energy dependence, immigration reform, things he bucked Bush on. everything else, Obama can successfully paint him as a third Bush term. His policies don't diverge from Bush' ENOUGH. It doesn't help McCain that the War (his strength) he recently fumbled on, and the general public wants to see it over. Obama will supercede on health care, jobs and the economy, education (Bush' failed "No Child Left Behind"), fuel, etc. Repubs are not domestic presidents. They're good at war and security/national defense. But, the public doesn't want any more expensive war, especially when Obama can rightly show that McCain won't even support healthcare for the returning troops or education for them. The country is ready for a different approach. As long as Obama can convince the average joe that diplomacy will keep us safe AND bring home those dying, get specific about his proposals, and keep religious scandal at bay, he'll win easily, sore Clintonistas and racists supporting McCain or not.
McCain has to change his song and dance routine! He has the leadership, now facts and the hell with cutting down the dark horse. Obama And Clinton's too strange bed fellows that have hollow and useless agenda. Their battle was ego's and now where is their leadership. their circus has doubled in size, nothing new and how old is that?

Keep the Issues up front! Democrats can stand reality!
LINCOLN had less experience than Obama.  That worked out all right.  And did anyone else think McCain looked tired?
The direction McCain would take the country - down economically, except for the few getting permanent Bush tax cuts.  More wars that do nothing to improve our safety, and will probably require reinstating the draft.  No improvement in health care coverage or affordability.  Confused policy on immigration. Supreme Court of activist right wing judges, dismantling protections for working Americans, while racking up more gains for corporations.
With McCain, you can judge him by his record of action and experience.
With Obama, you can judge him by his record of speeches and a meager 3.5 years in the senate (most of which were spent campaigning for president).
Obama is all talk! Let's see him run something before we anoint him!
i am so disapointed about macain  to even congratulated obama than attack him ! just think about it thats not fair
Growing up in Sonoma, California, my mother a democrat and my dad a republican, they both taught me to see both sides of an argument.  Obama is open to talk and think of ways to change----no one else seems to want to change.  They just can't get out of their old boxes. I'm 58 years old/young, and I love change...I love that someone may have learned from our old experiences...and not repeat it!!!
