McCain invites Obama to town halls

Posted: Wednesday, June 04, 2008 12:06 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell and Domenico Montanaro
McCain invited Obama to a series of town halls in a letter this morning, the candidate announced at a town hall in Baton Rouge.

McCain proposed about 10 town halls, about one a week between now and the Democratic National Convention. The first of them would be June 12th in New York City at Federal Hall, McCain said, “where the beginnings of our government took place.”

“I’d be there on the 12th,” McCain said, “and I hope Sen. Obama will be there as well” in the “spirit of change” that could “do our country good.”

The town halls would include about 200 to 400 people at each one, selected by an “objective organization,” McCain said.

“I suggest the town hall meeting format, because I think it’s the best way,” McCain said, adding that there isn’t a need for produced network debates with “process questions from reporters.”

“I even propose we travel together on the same plane,” McCain said, adding that he knows his campaign certainly wouldn’t mind given its financial situation.

“Sen. Obama truly has the opportunity to embrace a new kind of politics,” McCain said, to “engage in a higher level of discourse.”

He issued this challenge. “Leaders don’t hide from history,” he said. “They make history.… I hope Sen. Obama will accept my invitation.”

McCain went on to hit Obama on his views on foreign policy, particularly on Iraq and Iran. He began his speech by congratulating Clinton for the race she’s run.

(No word yet on the status of ARENA SPEECH-OFFS.)

LETTER FROM JOHN MCCAIN ON JOINT TOWN HALL MEETINGS
For Immediate Release Contact: Press Office Wednesday, June 4, 2008 703-650-5550 ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain's presidential campaign today released the following letter delivered to Senator Barack Obama this morning inviting him to join him in participating in town hall meetings across the country to discuss the most important issues facing Americans.

Full Letter Delivered Today To Senator Barack Obama:

June 4, 2008
The Honorable Barack Obama
Obama for America
P.O. Box 8102
Chicago, Illinois 60680

Dear Senator Obama:

In 1963, Senator Barry Goldwater and President John F. Kennedy agreed to make presidential campaign history by flying together from town to town and debating each other face-to-face on the same stage. In Goldwater's words, those debates "would have done the country a lot of good." Unfortunately, with President Kennedy's untimely death, Americans lost the rare opportunity of witnessing candidates for the highest office in the land discuss civilly and extensively the great issues at stake in the election. What a welcome change it would be were presidential candidates in our time to treat each other and the people they seek to lead with respect and courtesy as they discussed the great issues of the day, without the empty sound bites and media-filtered exchanges that dominate our elections. It is in the spirit of President Kennedy's and Senator Goldwater's agreement, in the spirit of the politics of change, and to do our country good, that I invite you to join me in participating in town hall meetings across the country to discuss the most important issues facing Americans. I also suggest we fly together to the first town hall meeting as a symbolically important act embracing the politics of civility.

I propose these town hall meetings be as free from the regimented trappings, rules and spectacle of formal debates as possible, and that we pledge to the American people we will not allow the idea to die on the negotiation table as our campaigns work out the details. I suggest we agree to participate in at least ten town halls once a week with the first on June 11 or 12 in New York City at Federal Hall until the week before the Democratic Convention begins at locations to be determined by our campaigns. Federal Hall is particularly fitting as it was the place where George Washington took the oath of office as our first President and the birthplace of American government hosting the first Congress, Supreme Court and Executive Branch offices. These town halls should be attended by an audience of between two to four hundred selected by an independent polling agency, could be sixty to ninety minutes in length, have very limited moderation by an independ ent local moderator, take blind questions from the audience selected by the moderator and allow for equally proportional time for answers by each of us. All of these are suggestions that can be finalized by our campaigns. What is important is that we commit to participate in these history making meetings to join in the higher level of discourse that Americans clearly would prefer.

To show our good faith, we should both commit to the first town hall I have suggested. In the mean time, we can work out dates for future town hall meetings.

I look forward to your favorable reply and to the opportunity to work with you to give Americans a better opportunity to understand our differences, our agreements and the leadership we offer them.

Sincerely,
John McCain

mccant sounds like he wants to be Baraks vp.
I sort of think this is a good idea. My problem is the timing. Will there be enough time between now and June 12th to put together a townhall of this nature? Still, I think Obama would do well in this format.
How many times do you have to be told old man, that you do not set Senator Obama's agenda?  OH, yea, you forget alot!  No--plain and simple--NO

This is just a set-up like the one hillary did to get  stupid posed questions and then to get shots of it.  No way!  We don't do ABC.
So McCain wants Obama to pay his campaigning costs?  Maybe McCain should learn how to raise sufficient funds on his own.

MSNBC:  Please find a new host for Morning Joe.  I can't stand the facile commentary.

Obviously, McCain is not a talented speaker. Sen Obama has the ability to reach far more voters who would enjoy coming to see him at a rally.  The debate format is not a great venue for McCain unless Joe Lieberman can stand next to him and inch closer when he begins to answer incorrectly.

Debates would be the best tactic to go toe to toe with McCain.
It seems that both Hillery and McCain want to be in charge of OBama's campain.  Talk about not letting go!  The Obama camp is very intelligent and I'm sure they have some surprises for us about who will be vice-president and and how they will conduct their campain in the future.
No on the planes. Secret Service hell.

And meh on the plan. I dont like the idea of McCain dictating the path of the GE.

Meetings should be prepared by both sides, and on shared terms, or not at all.
This would be a disaster, but I'm not sure who benefits more. Interesting how McCain belittles Obama, but wants to campaign with him.  Given how poorly he did yesterday, the town hall format is McCains best place to be. McCain would probably lose his temper before they made it through have of the meetings.
Ya Right.....Another way of saying "help finance my campaign against you".

Not this time!!
It's pretty obvious that this town hall gimmick proposed by McCain is a pathetic attempt to use the charisma of Obama to help McCain draw the kind of crowd that he is unable to do on his own.
McSame is just afraid of the Obamania. Don't worry he is after you.
You are simply a warmonger. What is you opinion on the economy?
McCain was RIGHT - "Looks like the party leaders and media have chosen my opponent for me" - SAD!
Hillary Has WON the popular vote - BUT the party leaders step in to GIVE him the nomination - SHAME!
The MILLIONS of Hillary supporters will NEVER vote for obama - he is NOT qualified to lead our country - BUT McCain is.  Obama is a FRAUD with a Weak, Radical Questionable background and will never be elected.
We do NOT care about the party - only our country.

HILLARY  OR MCCAIN     NEVER  OBAMA
these are going to be fun. Im an Obama supporter and hope he accepts at least the 1st town hall meeting. I cant wait to see McCain turning purple trying to maintain a cool temperment with what is surely going to be a heated debate.
Its kind of an intriguing idea.
Dear John: Be careful of what you ask for. Again I say: BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID.
Of course McCain wants town halls.  After that lethargic event he called a "speech" last night, and after seeing it panned by nearly every conservative commentator, there's no way that McCain's going to want to do any more of those.

One youtube of the two speeches side by side and it's game over!
I think he had a plan with HRC to write off Barack off the scene. Hey! McSame Hillary is off the stage. The show is over for her... Child out McBush
All McBush is looking for is for some of President Barack Obama's Press and RockStar attention by being seen next to him. it would not happen, if McCain want attention he should go to the Zoo or the circus where he belongs.

Obama 08/12

Obama should not travel with him at all!!  He want access to your crowds!  Crowds which he simply cannot draw!  Don't fall for his 'Trojan Horse' Strategy!
At first glance, I thought McBush was just 'trying to call the shots'...  (Dance to my tune, fella)...

However, I think it would be a very good thing for both to appear together.  One town hall, and McBush would realize the folly of his ways...
The mind games have begun. McCain thinks he'll have an advantage if Obama goes along with town-hall meetings. McCain is terrified about debating Obama in a formal forum. These town-hall meeting will be filled with republicans just asking stupid-ass questions like "Are you a muslim, do you hate Israel, etc.

Have the standard three debates and don't even consider ABC a likely contender to hold one of the three.

Obama 08
What an arrogant poop.

He has not consulted Barack as to his schedule. He is trying to set Obama up.

With this strategy of challenging Obama to meet me at 'high noon', with an attitude of, 'at the time, and place, and when, and where I tell you boy', he can claim that Obama is chicken if he refuses to be treated so rudely.
I threw $12 million dollars down the shute and almost eliminated myself from the race last year, so Senator Obama, can I use your plane to get around?  Oh yes, and would you American voters kindly pick me over Senator Obama to steward our multi-trillion dollar economy?  Thanks.

Sincerely,

John McCain
Mcpain comes across better when he is not before the c
scrutiny of the Media. So Obama should accept but
with conditions, and have plenty of Media to
formalize the impact of Mcpains off the hip style which causes his inconsistencies
That is hardly an invitation. It's a summons.
Yes!  We did it!  Sen. Obama has shown so much class during the course of this primary and I am so proud of him and yes all of you who supported the cause.  Pat, Lisa, MSierra, everyone thank you very much.  Mr. Todd, I owe you a special thanks for cutting through the spin of the day and giving us the cold, honest numbers.  You are good at what you do--keep it up.  To all of the Clinton supporters thank you as well.  We have indeed forged the best Democratic candidate possible and some of thanks is owed to Sen. Clinton.

I agree wholeheartedly with the analysis on McCain's speech.  It was God-awful.  He should probably avoid any and all side-by-side comparisons with Obama.  Like Chuck Todd said, "It may have looked like a good idea on paper, but in person..."

Everyone is going to have to work especially hard to see this through to the finish but I know that we can do it.  THIS IS OUR MOMENT
McCain isn't trying to set an Agenda, he is trying to put the candidates together side by side so voters can make truely rational decisions, not media based ones on "who won the debate"

He understand that if you saw the true Democratic ways you too would vote Republican.

McCain 08
Interesting, how McCain is starting to dictate the style of campaigning he wants or, is comfortable with. Clearly, McCain cannot compete with Obama when it comes to rallies, because there is no way we could ever attract 20,000 people. I think, it is a very clever strategy by McCain.
“Sen. Obama truly has the opportunity to embrace a new kind of politics,” where we can discuss his obsession with surrender and his inclination to side with terrorists.  - John McLaim

I guess if he thinks this tactic will bear fruit.  Obama is going to get his message out.  John McLaim can make himself available and join if he'd like!
He issued this challenge. “Leaders don’t hide from history,” he said. “They make history.… I hope Sen. Obama will accept my invitation.”

______________________________________________________

Sen. McCain, please stop acting like the Fonz and challenging Sen. Obama to a game of "chicken". It really shows your age.
Senator Snarky McCain is already desperate, as well he should be. His performance last night is that of a stuffed suit propped up and fed 'lines of the moment.'
Can't say I disagree with this.  Obama should do it, with the condition that a few of them (3? 4?) are traditional debates.
Senator Obama - don't like him or the GOP set your agenda.  Don't fall for his controlling tactics- because as I am sure you know...that is all he's trying to do.  Debates OK, but town hall meeting at a place of his choosing and time.  I don't think so.

Thank you and GOD BLESS America
"McCain went on to hit Obama on his views on foreign policy, particularly on Iraq and Iran."

Which one? the ones he started out with or the ones he using now?
I like how he says that he thinks this is best . He knows all and wants to dictate to Obama. I have a better Idea. Obama should invite John McBush to give a few speeches on the road with him at convention centers around the US. Let um have at it side by side in the Big Boys Arena. Lets see we sould fly around together that way I can save on airfare since my campaign is having a hard time raising money. Somebody needs to tell John McTurtle to climb back into his shell.
Obama will set his own agenda.  He does not have to follow Hillarys or McCains wishes.  He is his own man and has the right to set his own terms.
Obama will not accept the invitation from McCain because he knows he cannot face questions from non media people.  Obama has little political experience, no foreign experience nor any military experience.
Obama should counter with a proposal to travel together for Lincoln-Douglas style debates.
Blah, Blah, Blah....
This is the best way he can TV and a Plane ride?
Lets split $ ok for these events. And the folks who will attend these will be selected by a joint committee between the RNC and DNC
McCain realized, after last night's bad speech performance, that town hall meetings are his only hope. Do a live debate McCain. Let the world see you and Obama, one on one, and face to face, duking it out over issues. The television isn't kind to you and that "deer in the headlights look" of yours.
I think the concept is ok, but McCain loses points with the Grandstanding.  I see them doing 4 at the most.  I would like to see it have divided into special groups, ie,,townhall with Seniors, students, etc.  that will contrast the specfic policies and Obama will dominate MCCain....be careful what you ask for.
well..all fine ...debate , town hall ...before he asks to sit and answer questions ....there are couple of 101s to go by ...ME 101 and Econ 101
Don't be fooled, Johnny Mac. Just because Obama didn't tear Clinton or any other Democrats apart in their debates doesn't mean he won't beat the living bully pulpit out of you. Obama managed to turn down expectations for these town halls. Can't wait to see it.
That's because McCain cannot draw the crowds that Obama can... but I am amused at how both Clinton and McCain keep trying to set Obama's agenda for him.

By the way, does anyone know just how long Clinton plans on holding her women and "hard working White Americans" hostage?  It's disgusting how she flat out refuses to acknowledge the FACT that Obama IS the nominee, and how she's USING her support base as a bargaining tool to get whatever the hell she wants.

I sure hope she does not manage to force her way onto the ticket as VP.

I figure McCain is suggesting this so he can try his hand at addressing crowds larger than 12 or 13 people. He wants to see what it's really like to have enthusiastic breathing supporters - not the geriatric set he attracts. Get away old man.  He's looking more foolish every day.
What a nice overture!  Way to go Senator McCain!

Wait, what's the RNC/McCain Campaign up to?

It's hard not to be suspicious of motives, isn't it.  Do they perceive that McCain performs much better vis-a-vis Obama in this forum?  Yes, why not a balanced approach:  Five Town Hall meetings, and five arena speeches?  Now, that would be enlightening, no?

Oh, and why the hurry?  June 12?  Give me a break.  McCain has been idling in an Interstate Rest Area for months now, and Obama just finished a bleeping marathon.

Think about it long and hard, Barack.  Don't turn it down flatly, that would look inconsiderate at best.  But don't jump blindly on the opportunity either.

Obama '08
Dear John: Three more GI'S killed today. Three more of our own. Three loved ones. HOW MANY MORE WILL YOU SACIFICE?????????????????????????????????????????
McCain is greedy for Obama's large crowds. A couple times, perhaps, but no more.
Basically an attempt by McCain/GOP to control the pace of the election and place everything on their terms.  GOP is all about the control of information and who gets it and when.  Stick with debates and perhaps if they are in the same city, have an impromptu town meeting.  But letting the GOP control the timing of the election is just dumb.
