Fact-check: Goldwater-Kennedy

Posted: Wednesday, June 04, 2008 12:38 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Chris Donovan
In McCain's letter he quotes Goldwater as saying a similar deal on town hall meetings "would have done the country a lot of good."

The quote actually comes from a 1988 Washington Post interview with Goldwater -- and it might be interesting to see the full quote in context.

In it, Goldwater says, "It probably wouldn't have happened." Here's the full quote: (and as I type historian Michael Beschloss just made this point on MSNBC):

"Goldwater's eyes remain fixed on the window. 'I would have enjoyed it very much. I even talked to him one day about using the same airplane, going to the same places. He'd get out in one place and start to debate and I'd rebut him. Then we'd turn it around in the next place. It was the Uncle Morris fantasy, and it probably wouldn't have happened. But he liked the idea. It would have saved a lot of money, we'd have had a good time, and it would have done the country a lot of good.'"  (Washington Post, 8/14/1988)

Dear John: Here's a fact for you===Three GI'S died today. How many more are you willing to sacrifice?????
See, Obama doesn't have to do a thing to show that Mc** and his team are not ready for the GE. The very first sentence of his letter is an out and out LIE.

Let's debate the 3 scheduled debates and get this going.

November can't come fast enough.

Obama '08
Perhaps Town Hall style meeting will more suit McCain's personality.

Interesting last night watching those three speeches in a row.  I must say I was struck with just how phoney John McCain came across- he doesn't sound remotely genuine at all.  The forced smiles the body language- all of it. Even that little high pitched voice of his - did he always speak this way or is he trying to sound gentler or something?  I remember being mildly impressed with this guy in 2000 - what the heck happened? Ok he's comparitively old, but talk about a mear shell of your former self.  Seriously did that speach empassion anyone?

Condidering the tone and unrest in the country right now and comparing either BO or HC directly to McCain- I think either would wipe the floor with him when given a chance, in the GE.   I guarantee you after the first debate- you are going to hear a ton of comparisons with JFK and Nixon ala 1960.  Meaning (For those too young), that McCain will look and sound like the  tired same old - same old (which of course is accurate).

The GOP best get that mighty smear campaign going into overdrive, but even that old 'Fear and most Liberal ever labels' will simply not sell as it used to as this information age generally has people much better informed and frankly Obama is simply too organized and smart for McCain to scare enough people to the Gop side.  This has the making of a blood bath!
Nice thought.  But it only works if the candiated are on even footing.  As it stands, Obama draws the crowds, generates the excitement and has the charisma...McCain simply doesnt.  McCain cannot begin to dream to draw the same crowds.  So why do the work when you can ride someone's coat tails?

Right, McCain would not suggest the town hall's with Obama, if he did not see some advantage in it for him.

His campaign cash is paltry, and so are the numbers he draws.

The crowd last night responded to him as though John was a couple of sominex tablets.

He needs Obama's funding, and ability to keep the 'hall' awake!

Cut his idea adrift Obama!
ROFL !!!!!!!

Is this the best McCain can do?  I like this part: "it probably wouldn't have happened."

McCain is SO OUTDATED.
Barack Obama is not the world's greatest debater, so I don't see this happening anytime soon.  He is more of a speech giver and a rabble rouser then a debater.
John, maybe it's time we started quoting that brilliant movie Once:

Maybe if you'd slow down for me
I could see you're only telling
Lies, lies, lies
I am all for this with one prodigal rule; McCain is not allowed to make that fake and sheepish smile he makes that is so forced and makes his face look like it's  made of ancient unkempt wood or brick. He is more like an old unpolished nd tattered furniture whose movemnets remind me of a robotic structure. Kind of like those cranes in NY that keep crashing?

That fake smile, especially when he is apparently laughing at his 'not funny at all jokes' always seem to disrupt the flow of his message. It's like he does it to to cue his followers taht it's time to laugh or applaud, boo, or whatever.
Been mulling this over for a few minutes - I'm on board. Hopefully we'll see it happen.
Aw, c'mon, guys.  Uncle Fluffy's a part of the GOP and we know they're not ones to let "facts" get in the way of anything.
But what will McBush do without a teleprompter, or Joe Lieberman there to correct him?

It simply won't be fair.
Believe it or not, I highly doubt it will happen this time
So let me see if I've got this straight...

McSame challenges Obama to a series of town hall style debates (that favor him) travelling around together on the same plane (so he can save money that he doesn't have and live off Obama's campaign funds)just like Kennedy and Goldwater had (except they didn't)?

Gee willikers...I wonder how Obama should respond???
JFK and Goldwater...two candidates who could have done it and the country would have benefited. This is something that John McCain has proven he is good at...Barack Obama not so well. Unlikely to happen but shows that John McCain is trying to run a respectful campaign on the issues. The ball is in Barack Obama's court.
The fact that Obama wasn't willing to immediately come out and say yes, proves that he's man enough.

He want's to continue to preach to his choir.  He's not man enough or enough of a leader to sit down with McCain in front of a couple of hundred Americans and interview for the most important job in the world.

He want's to continue preach to his followers where no one calls him out, or challanges him.

McCain made a brilliant move, either way, it's a win-win for McCain.  If Obama agrees (probably after weeks of excuses and hemming and hawing), Obama will be exposed for the fruad that he really is.  If Obama doesn't agree, he'll be looked at as not being man enough.

A COWARD!
This kind of tatic is used by those that want their opponent to say no.  It could be used to say that the opponent doesn't want to debate while showing the person requesting the debate is looking foward to talking.  This is a false premise.  It needs to be worked out through the campaign staff.

Given this day and age with campaign able to record everything, any mistakes would be turned into some commercial for the opponent; "this guy said he hates small cute children" as an example.  It would have been unlikely that Kennedy and Goldwater would have actually done that kind of meeting.  It would be minefield for any campaign.
McCain is showing himself to be a say anything to get elected type of guy.  He's actually becoming quite pathetic.

Obama and McCain should travel together - Obama can use someone to carry his luggage (i.e. Old Man McCain)...
John McCain can share the stage with himself.  He can answer questions first as McCain and then as McBush.
I like Barack. He has a solid vision. He can be a great motivator and speaker. He is not a good debator. Town hall might work. I don't believe that John McCain will work in a town hall meeting. He already shows his style and it is looks like he's taking advice from Karl Rove. He will not discuss without looking for and using the moment, the misspeak, the crowd to twist and turn the political knife when the occasion presents itself. He is a debate man, not a conversation man.
Are we talking about 1964?

Because John McCain is no Barry Goldwater, and Barack Obama is no Lyndon Johnson (thank heaven).

But just for fun, let's have a town hall meeting at Mt. Rushmore to talk about THAT.
How dare McCain, reference Goldwater at all, and then talking about reaching across to bring people in, what a blatant mistake in judgement and how stupid can he be......................
Interesting!  I don't think townhalls would be the forum needed to address the issues.  We need a clear, defined debate about the critical issues facing this nation.  It is not the time to play around with the lives of Americans anymore.  Our lives have been disrupted by the Bush administration and it and any resemblence should be run out of office.
