Clinton to end campaign

Posted: Thursday, June 05, 2008 9:27 AM by Mark Murray

The New York Times reports that Clinton will endorse Obama on Saturday, “bringing a close to her 17-month campaign for the White House, aides said. Her decision came after Democrats urged her Wednesday to leave the race and allow the party to coalesce around Mr. Obama. Howard Wolfson, one of Mrs. Clinton’s chief strategists, and other aides said she would express support for Mr. Obama and party unity at an event in Washington that day. One adviser said Mrs. Clinton would concede defeat, congratulate Mr. Obama and proclaim him the party’s nominee, while pledging to do what was needed to assure his victory in November.”

“Her decision came after a day of conversations with supporters on Capitol Hill about her future now that Mr. Obama had clinched the nomination. Mrs. Clinton had, in a speech after Tuesday night’s primaries, suggested she wanted to wait before deciding about her future, but in conversations Wednesday, her aides said, she was urged to step aside.”

Per NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Clinton will endorse Obama, but she will not waive her right to have her name placed in nomination at the convention. Clinton will thank supporters, talk about party unity, and praise Obama. As Mitchell reported on TODAY, by late afternoon on a conference call Rep. Charlie Rangel and 22 other congressional supporters told Clinton she had to give up -- by the end of the week. Separately, Clinton received a gentle push -- not a shove -- from eight Senate friends, including Sens. Schumer, Mikulski, and Feinstein, who told her to think about preserving her future options.

Clinton sent this note to her supporter email list: “I wanted you to be one of the first to know: on Saturday, I will hold an event in Washington D.C. to thank everyone who has supported my campaign. Over the course of the last 16 months, I have been privileged and touched to witness the incredible dedication and sacrifice of so many people working for our campaign. Every minute you put into helping us win, every dollar you gave to keep up the fight meant more to me than I can ever possibly tell you. On Saturday, I will extend my congratulations to Senator Obama and my support for his candidacy. This has been a long and hard-fought campaign, but as I have always said, my differences with Senator Obama are small compared to the differences we have with Senator McCain and the Republicans.”

The Washington Post: “Although Obama was the newly crowned winner of the Democratic race, the focus remained on Clinton through much of yesterday as Democrats pushed anxiously for her to bring her candidacy to an end. Even some supporters of Clinton were baffled by the fact that she had still neither endorsed Obama nor announced an intention to continue fighting for the nomination all the way through the Democratic National Convention in August.”

“The decision came late in an emotionally exhausting day, after Clinton bade farewell to her distraught, weeping staffers at her suburban Washington headquarters and spent hours hearing from friends and Democratic powerbrokers,” the New York Daily News writes. “ ‘It was very emotional,’ an insider said. ‘There were lots of young people crying, people who really believed and gave everything.’”

The Boston Globe: “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Governors Association Chairman Joe Manchin and Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean issued this joint statement that could be viewed as putting more pressure on Hillary Clinton to concede defeat. Democrats must now turn our full attention to the general election. To that end, we are urging all remaining uncommitted super delegates to make their decisions known by Friday of this week so that our party can stand united and begin our march toward reversing the eight years of failed Bush/McCain policies that have weakened our country.”

Maybe it's because Obama was not a defendant in that trial.  Rezko being guilty does not make people who knew him guilty.  Hillary, on the other hand, is a defendant in one of the biggest fraud lawsuits in history.  You see the difference, right?

Your William Ayers comment was hilarious.  Tell me, who was that pardoning terrorists at the end of his administration?  Why, none other than Bill Clinton!  Wasn't that Hillary's brothers profitting from those pardons?

Speaking of pardons, what do you have to say about the Marc Rich pardon?  Wasn't that nice of Bill to absolve Rich of his crimes?  I'm sure it is just a coincidence that Rich's wife was a major financial contributer to Hillary's Senate campaign.

You Clinton supporters crack me up.  You are so quick to accuse Obama of corruption, when you are supporting one of the most corrupt politicians in history.

Obama/Sebelius in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
To all democrats involved...

There have been a lot of things said during this election cycle. On this blog we've always waited for some left field comment from Pat Huntington.

I was later surprised to find out it was a guy all along but despite who he chose I respected his right to his opinion...

Both sides of this blog has said very nasty things about other candidate and his/her supporters... But I'm glad to finally say its over...

I wish Pat and others that feel like him, with the warmest regards and wishes of good luck on your new choice for president for its your right as an American...

I urge those core Obama supporters and the new ones that a starting to join to move on from Clinton bashing; they have done a lot for all of us... In my heart of hearts I know Hillary meant the country nothing but good in her quest and will continue to move us forward in some official capacity. It's with caution, but I believe because of the way she played the game she deserves to be on the ticket, if she can stand being second. I don't know its for them to decide.

I only know that gas is too high, I will lose my 20 year job come November because its going to Mexico, and another car bomb just went off in Iraq; more soldiers not coming home. Vote for McCain if you must I'm going to try and save my future, America's future...

Nothing but peace and blessing to you all... Tim...
Obama '08
Today the NYT which endorsed HRC had to chastise her yet again. "Nagging doubts about her character" are to blame, they say, for the "campaigns'negativity". HRC's behavior Tues. night, her refusal to concede, must deny her a spot on the ticket. I believe the Obama camp will be brave enough to select someone different for VP.  Excitement and admiration abroad is being widely reported. Obama's international standing will surprise Americans (including McCain).
Glad to see Hillary finally bowing out, or bowing, mostly, to advisers who are sick of the mess she's made, and are telling her to get over herself. Good advice, and I'm glad she's taking it. Why in the world is she keeping her name as a nominee at the convention? Is it really that she just loves to hear her name followed by applause? She should under no circumstances be Veep, she'd try to undermine Obama and steal his thunder, and Bill would just be an embarrassment to the country.  But as Secretary of HHS, she could push her health insurance thing with Congress just as hard as she wants to.And leave Bill at home.

I told you guys months ago that the fat-bottom ganged was doomed the moment that Obama trapped HRC into saying that she would garnish the wages of working Americans to pay for mandatory health insurance. The Warrior Princess blowing off the six year old girl when she told her that she couldn't talk to reporters didn't help either. And don't forget that while Obama was knocking on doors in Iowa Hillary was flying around in a black hellicopter. Iowans were not impressed.
Jeez people, get a grip. So she lost. It's about keeping the values of our party intact.

I can't stand HRC but I would certainly give her my vote if Obama lost. How can you switch to McCain? You never were a Democrat if you do. You're better off in his party and you don't belong with the Dems with that sorry attitude. It's that very attitude that was so disgusting to begin with.
"I just had an email from Hillary asking me to support Obama but I cannot do that."

Wouldn't trusting Hillary's judgement entail...trusting Hillary's judgement?
is terri mcaullife still alive or did his head spin 360 degrees before popping off.

not bashing the clintons or anything

but that guy was/is seriously out of his mind
It's interesting when you look at the facts...

...The Clintons haven't had to concede anything since 1980.  The nation has never had to see them admit they lost anything.

The key word is "suspend"...she keeps her delegates and she can still go through the nomination process in Denver and her delegates can still vote for her...and should the unthinkable occur, the machinery is still in place for her to step in and be the nominee.

Tuesday was a turning point...McAuliffe's introduction of "the next President of the United States" and the failure to acknowledge Senator Obama's status as the presumptive nominee seemed to not only rub Obama supporters the wrong way but it seems to have disturbed Senator Clinton's supporters in Congress.

She went too far.

HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Relax, everyone. No reason, as the first strong woman candidate, she shouldn't put her name in, let her pledged delegates vote for her in the first round, then lose gracefully. No delegate fights, no Credentials mayhem.

I am an Obama supporter, but done gracefully (a stretch for the Clinton's but with enough support I think they can pull it off), this allows history to be made in both camps without in any way marring the convention.
I just hope the Obama supporters keep their nasty virtiol to themselves now that Hillary is doing what they wanted all along.

Okay, Pat.  Folks have been trying, in fits and starts, to allow Mrs. C to depart graciously, and the problem is her stubborn refusal to do so.  Somewhere between Wisconsin and yesterday (a mere four months), 'toughness' (or posturing as same) became a real divisive course of action.  She had four months to step away graciously, be a 'team player' and so on, and her most recent request to 'have a couple of days to decide what to do' was just the real clincher---implicit threat to direct "her" 18 million voters (as if they are trained robots---I think not) or to hold out for being 'given' something (seeking to put Obama in a poor light as a 'weak' negotiator) or simply disrespecting 'the rules of the game' and, inherently, the voting decisions made by millions.  She stayed too long at the party; that said, it's time to move to the real questions for all involved; too much is at stake to do otherwise.
I don't understand how people who claim to want a new direction in health care, the economy, the war, etc can now suddenly throw it all away and declare they will vote McCain or not vote. What about the future lost lives in Iraq, the needy and over burdened middle class - dont you still care about them? Why would a smart person want to cut off their nose to spite their face just because they didn't get their way in the nomination process?  If your toddler or teen acted that way you would be scolding them for being selfish. Please, whomever you choose to vote for in November, let that vote be made for a good reason, and please, out of respect for those who have lost their lives in wartime, please use your right to vote and don't stay away from the polls in November.
To Pat:"now that Hillary is doing what they wanted all along". This has nothing to do with what we wanted all along, but, everything to do with what is right. Sen. Obama has respected Sen. Clinton all during the race.  He thanks her for being in the race, he mentioned her name even on the night "he won the nomination"! My goodness you don't think that Sen. Clinton should/could do the same? It doesn't matter too much how much trash talking some of his supporters have done, look at the man.  You get back from the universe what you put out there.
I am a Bill and Hillary supporter and feel saddened that she lost, but I am ready to cast my vote for Obama.  I hope Bill and Hillary will campaign HARD to get her base to vote Obama. I was hoping Obama would choose her as VP, but think that would be a mistake because of the vetting on Bill, and the late night pizza parties in the West Wing with Interns coming in to Bill's all-nighters, and having another Monica Luisznki moment...  No one can keep a lid on Bill and he could prove to be a BIG distraction for OB. Plus, I thik the heart sergery he had may have altered his brain a little and made him somewhat bipolar.
Dear If Obama is a Christian, then why does he still wear Muslim name?

I take it you do not have any pride and loyalty to the name you were given at birth?  Since you were unable to use the one you were given to sign your absolutely absurd comment.

When I found religion and became Catholic at the age of 30; should I have taken a more Christian name?

If you do not want to support the Democratic Party just say so instead of coming up with ridiculous ideas.
Hey Shawn Goddard,
We who support Hillary have watched for MONTHS while you little punks name called, demeaned and belittled Hillary for the sake of a political nomination. You don't give a damn about the Democratic Party. I suspect you're another independent PUNK who'll go running back to your Green Party after November 4th.
DO NOT PREACH TO US ABOUT DECORUM, LEARN SOME MANNERS YOURSELF!
Obama AND his supporters can go straight to hell. I've been a Democrat all my life...but, I would NEVER support or vote for a MORON like him, who's supported by PUNKS like you!
Why don't you give Obama's good friend William Ayers a call. Maybe the two of you can have lunch together and he can tell you all about how he detonated explosive devices in the US Capitol, The Pentagon, and The State Department. Perhaps that would satisify your devotion to all things that are anti american.
If you don't like what I say here, you can kiss my ass.
How's that, you snot nosed little punk?
"I just hope the Obama supporters keep their nasty virtiol to themselves now that Hillary is doing what they wanted all along."

Of course.  She is about to become one of his most enthusiastic supporters.  She will do well for him on the stump...as will Bill and all of her other top supporters. What's to vitriol about?

But it should be noted it was her own NY delegation that suggested she stop now - along with 23 of her other top supporters.  It's starting to come out that many of THEM were urging her to quit months ago. She ran a poor campaign (that's not nasty), she was ill served by her early choices in the campaign but... still,  she ran a heck of a race (not vitriolic) and eventually - she lost (the truth).

She'll be just fine...She and Bill are Democrats and both will continue to serve the Party. Saturday she will appeal to her followers to do the same.

Those who don't will be warmly welcomed into the Republican Party and the McCain camp. Go in peace.
Candace, they did do a artical about the rezko verdict. but we all know that obama has been honest and straight about that whole thing, now Candace, our governer needs to worry, his fingers were all in rezko.
Billary don't have the Class to admit defeat. (Just as Bill showed no class when he should have resigned after bringing impeachment disgrace on the Office of the Presidency)  If they had any class at all Billary would put minimal effort and resources into this upcoming concession event so as to gently fade from the limelight (THIS EVENT IS ALL ABOUT THEM) and let the attention fall squarley on our Future President Barack Obama.
Senator Obama has employed "DIVIDE & CONQUER" politics...first far left wing liberals, then the youth, then AA...now, lets see him pick up the pieces!!

What a unifier...his whole candidacy is built on a great sham...not a politician...just a dirty politician from Chicago!!

His supporters continued down that path of unity by verbally abusing anyone that disagreed with them...in the name of unity I guess!!  Not talking about issues...just bashing the opponent!!

This is a perfect short term plan...that's destined to implode in the long term!!
Clinton "will not waive her right to have her name placed in nomination at the convention"????? WHAT!?
What part of YOU LOST THE NOMINATION DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND, HILLARY! You are beyond belief...like some dog who refuses to let go of a bone. Someone needs to teach you a little integrity and grace...but I guess that is something any Clinton could never understand. And please, OBAMA, DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT pick this woman as your running mate. I believe Bill Clinton never wanted his "wife" to be president, and that is why he shot his mouth off all during her campaign. And this same tactic will be used by both Hill and Bill if they campaign for Obama. Just keep her away, Obama. But if she is around, watch your back.
She's up to something with having her name on the ballot.  I think she is waiting for the s--- to hit the fan on Obama so she can get the superd's to switch their votes back again.

PS.  Sorry to see you in "mourning" the other night on the news with Brian Williams.  Your black clothes said it all.  Guess you put away your dragonfire red outfit, huh?
Have we learned nothing?! I am an Obama supporter, however, I believe that Hillary Clinton ran a competitive race.  Had the shoe been on the other foot, I know that I would be deeply offended and alienated if people were speaking about my candidate in such disrespectful terms.

The type of dialogue that I'm seeing from both sides does nothing except for guarantee that we will have four more years of a Bush presidency in the form of John McCain.

To Clinton Supporters: Please understand that the vicious, petty statements of some Obama supporters reflects neither the candidate nor the sentiments of the majority of his supporters.  Do not cut off your nose to spite your face: a vote for McCain is the WRONG vote; we are Democrats first and foremost.  Do not allow emotion to cloud judgement.

To Obama supporters: Be gracious in victory.  As MY mother always said: "Be good to people on your way up, because those are the same people you will meet on your way down."  Learn to turn the other cheek and reach out to the other side, whether they be Independent, Republican, or Hillary supporter.  We are Americans first and change will not come without the help of ALL Americans.  If you're spewing hate at Hillary supporters, you've obviously missed the message that Obama's been preaching all along.
