First thoughts: Obama's wider map

*** Obama’s wider map: About two months ago, we unveiled our early look at the electoral map. And this being the second official day of the general election, now's as good a time as any to see where we stand in the McCain vs. Obama race.

Base Obama: CA, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, MD, MA, NY, RI, VT (153 electoral votes)
Lean Obama: ME, NJ, MN, OR, WA (47 votes)
Toss-up: CO, FL, IA, MI, NV, NM, NH, OH, PA, VA, WI (138 votes)
Lean McCain: AR, GA, IN, LA, MS, MO, MT, NE, NC, ND (84 votes)
Base McCain: AL, AK, AZ, ID, KS, KY, OK, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, WV, WY (116 votes)

While both McCain and Obama get to 200 when adding up their base and lean states, it’s clear to see that Obama has an early edge with the map. Not only does he have a stronger base than McCain does (153 votes vs. 116), but he also has more potential pick-up opportunities. When you add toss-up and “Lean McCain,” Obama has the potential for another 222 votes outside his favored states. By comparison, McCain’s toss-up and “Lean Obama” comes to 185. Of course, potential sometimes means just that -- potential. At the end of the day, Obama will likely win few, if any, of those Lean McCain states. But his reach right now seems much longer than McCain’s.

VIDEO:  NBC Political Director Chuck Todd gives his first read on Clinton's exit from the presidential race and takes a look at Obama and McCain's V.P. selection strategies.

*** A victory bump? Not surprisingly, Obama is getting unbelievable press coverage today. Just how big will the bump be, and when do we know when we see it? Probably the next two weeks. What to watch for in the polls: Obama’s support among rank-and-file Democrats and women.

*** Polling Hillary for veep: Speaking of polls… Now that Clinton has set a date for her exit from the campaign, one thing Team Obama ought to be careful of is polling her for veep. Why? She's the most well known potential veep candidate, and so she's always going to look like she's a help to Obama. But that’s due in large part to name recognition. The eventual running mate gets known quickly, and how the person is rolled out matters. Look at how Lieberman and Cheney -- both of whom were not well known nationally in 2000 -- were able to become instant assets because of how they were rolled out biographically. Neither one, however, would have popped in the polls in the beginning of the process.

VIDEO: Speculation whirls over whether Obama may pick Clinton as his running mate. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

*** The town hall challenge: Besides Clinton’s exit and the announcement by the Obama campaign that it had tapped three Democrats (Caroline Kennedy, Jim Johnson, and Eric Holder) to lead Obama’s veep selection committee, the biggest news yesterday was McCain’s proposal to Obama to hold joint town halls. The Obama camp signaled that it was open to that idea, although it prefers more of a Lincoln-Douglas format. Who is helped by joint town halls? Both campaigns think they are. But who is helped MORE? If the debates in the fall become LESS consequential or unique, then the person helped the most could be the new guy. Obama, more so than McCain, probably benefits the more he stands next to McCain -- just by standing with him, he looks more presidential. Then again, though, it's a risk if McCain exposes any inexperience. It’s worth noting that neither McCain nor Obama was seen as a great debater in the primary season.

VIDEO: McCain challenges Obama to a rigorous schedule of summer town hall meetings. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

*** Virginia is for winners: Obama highlights that wider map we talked about above when he campaigns today in Virginia -- first in the Southwest part of the state (the Appalachian region that proved problematic for him during the primaries), and later in Northern Virginia (the suburban and exurban region of DC, the type of area in which he excelled). Senate candidate Mark Warner, who enjoyed plenty of success in the rural parts of the state as Virginia governor, will stump with Obama at his first stop, and Sen. Jim Webb and Gov. Tim Kaine -- both potential veep choices -- will join Obama at the rally in Northern Virginia.

*** Just asking: Could yesterday’s Rezko verdict have come on a better day for Obama -- the day after he clinches the nomination and Clinton finally sets her exit date? That said, the Republican National Committee was quick to seize on the news, producing a new Web site called RezkoJudgment.com.

*** On the trail: McCain is in Florida, where he raises money and speaks to the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors and Florida Press Association Convention Lake Buena Vista, and then he hits another fundraiser in Fort Lauderdale. Obama, meanwhile, is in Virginia, campaigning in Bristol (the Southwest part of the state) in the late morning and Bristow (Northern Virginia) in the early evening.

Countdown to Dem convention: 81 days
Countdown to GOP convention: 88 days
Countdown to Election Day 2008: 152 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 229 days

McCain wins Florida and Nevada

Obama '08
If Bill couldn't pass the vetting to have Hillary as VP how did she ever expect to make it through the GOP ringer as the nominee?
Pat Huntington NY - Clearly you are a republican and clearly your mind is still set in the past.  This is a new day in politics.  It is not the old of 2000 and 2004 in which FL was a based for the GOP.  We have a stronger candidate and he will not allow the GOP to manipulate the voting process to disenfranchise voters and we will not allow a FL state representative control the outcome of that state election. IN other words - the GOP will not steal the votes of the FL people and certainly not steal this election.  IT will not happen we will fight this to the end.  IF there is any slight notice, sign, attempt, etc.  We supporters will go bankrupt to help the Democratic Party do whatever they need to do to not let this happen again.

NO WAY JOHN MCCAIN WINS

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
They both have 200 and the toss-ups equal 69 each, for 269 each.  A tie where no one wins. LOL!

Now, look again at the toss-up states.
Do you seriously believe BHO is going to take the big swing states? He's already proven that he can't.

And for my fellow New Hampshirite:
Do you think the folks in NH are going to relate to Barack Obama's congregation, and the hooting and hollering we can all witness in the background as BHO's preacher is screaming, "God Damn America!!!"

BHO didn't win NH BEFORE Jeremiah Wright came on the scene.

McC's "guilt by association" with GWB worse than BHO's "guilt by association" with his own racist congregation for the last 20 years????
No contest here in NH, as far as I can tell.

In addition, I know of no Clinton supporter in NH who will support BHO after BHO's Billy Shaheen bs.
I agree with Kim. Anyone who thinks Kaine would help Obama carry Virginia isn't from Virginia. Not that Kaine is completely disrespected (like, say, Gilmore), but he's seen as Warner's little brother, who only got to the governor's mansion because of Warner.

Obama may carry Virginia on his own. The only running mate who would help him here would be Warner.

But then there's that nagging question of what dirt the Clinton campaign found on Warner back in 2006 that kept him out of the presidential race, and thus brought Obama into the race.

For those who don't know, Obama wasn't running if Warner did; within days of declaring his candidacy, Obama was in Richmond with Warner and Kaine; and Warner's contacts outside Virginia were the initial basis for Obama fundraising.
Oh please....now you're going to try and convince us that Obama is going to win.
How about some coverage of the Rezko conviction, instead of burying it?

Politically, I do not beleive that Sen. Clinton would make a good VP choice but that is because she doesn't fit Obama's message well. I just wish that posters would cease these needless attacks on her. We Obama supporters have been complaining for months at her actions that seem to lack class and grace and that she doesn't accept defeat with dignaty. That may or may not be true but what is true is that bashing her as a VP choice shows the same lack of class, grace and dignity.

I think Sen. Obama would be dissapointed.

OBAMA '08
By the way, THIS lifetime Democrat won't be voting for Obama in November either.
I'll be voting for McCain.
Hey Obama and Clinton supporters,

These people who try to drum up support to vote for McCain instead of Obama as a protest are just Rep. hacks hired by Karl Rove.
As pres. nom., Obama should not feel pressured to pick Clinton - with all the baggage she'll certainly be dragging behind her.

We've all seen that her presence would do Obama more harm than good - and thanks to her, the Republicans know exactly where to aim.

Hillary had her chance to concede humbly and graciously, but she blew it. And don't think for a moment that Americans will forget this in 2012. We are too smart to vote for this woman a second time.

Obama 08/12
Agreed Pat.

Even with Clinton on ticket or if she was nominee, McCain would take FL.  It is demographically tailored made for him.

Dems have no shot at carrying FL while Crist is GOV.
Florida isn't a toss up...its clearly a McCain state.
Pat Huntington NY (Sent Thursday, June 05, 2008 9:37 AM)

-------------------------------------------------

If Uncle Fluffy chooses Governor Crist as his running mate it will be a gift to the Democrats.

"Hey, Florida, remember how you were screwed out of half of your delegate votes at the Democratic and Republican convention?  Here's the guy who did it to you!"
Chuck - Why do you keep Wisconsin in the toss-up column when Obama will probably win it by 10 points?  What, there are like 4 million people in the entire state of Wisconsin?  Over 1.4 million live in the metro Milwaukee area which is only 80 miles away from Chicago so he is like a hometown kid to us too.  Plus Milwaukee, the largest city, is over 40% Black now.  And the next largest city, Madison, is completely dominated by the University of Wisconsin students and college educated "elitists".  Madison has had a Obama organization there for over a year now.

Plus Wisconsin has a Democratic Governor and two Democratic Senators.  The only downside is that both Governors are Jewish and neither has publicly endorsed yet for whatever reason.  I'm surprised Feingold hasn't jumped yet since he's like a rebel.

Against Hillary, McCain would have a real shot to beat her by 2 points.  Against Obama, it's NOT HAPPENING because he has way too many geographic, demographic, and institutional advantages here.
Wisconsin is not a "Toss-up". You guys got that one wrong. This one will go Obama easily. EASILY.
He does not even need to stop here, that's how much he has Wisconsin in the bag. Toss this one in Obama's column. Not just because I said so, but because if you lived here, you'd see, we are very much a democratic state. Our biggest city: Milwaukee destroys whatever numbers the rest of our state pulls as certain areas do go repup, naturally. Mark these words: WISCONSIN WILL NOT BE GOING TO MCCAIN. WE PROMISE.
Looks like some people did not learn anything from this last campaign. The talking heads and pundents and their focused polls have no more idea of what regular people are thinking about than a monkey. Obama went against a well oiled professional political machine while dealing with the Republican T.V. squad of psudo-intellectuals. They just don't get that people are tired of being taken for granted and having to pay the rich for screwing things up.
If we learn anything, let it be to think out of the box and to place some faith in your inner thoughts of what is right. Remember good old words like Patriot, People and Constitution.
