OH Gov. Strickland endorses Obama

Posted: Thursday, June 05, 2008 1:53 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: , ,

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli and NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, one of the most ardent Hillary Clinton backers, has now thrown his support to Barack Obama.

Strickland has been mentioned as a potential vice president for Obama, as he is the governor of what has been a critical battleground state.

Strickland, notably, stood behind Clinton (on cam) as she famously shouted, "Shame on you, Barack Obama!" as she held a flier his campaign was circulating on her position on NAFTA just before the March 4th Ohio and Texas contests.

*** UPDATE *** More scrubbing with the past couple of days' flow of endorsements to Obama. Most of these are out there already and came out yesterday, but 19 to add for Obama: Sen. Barbara Boxer CA (who we never had on our list -- an aide had told First Read she “plans to” vote for Clinton at convention), Susan Davis CA, Sen. Ken Salazar CO, Sen. Mary Landrieu LA, Heather Mizeur MD, Walter Mondale MN, Rick Stafford MN, John Temporiti MO, Rep. Tom Udall, NM, David Strauss ND, Chris Redfern OH, Phil Bredesen TN, Inez Crutchfield TN, Gray Sasser TN, C. Richard Cranwell VA, Paul Cote WA, Sharon Mast WA, Sen. Herb Kohl WI, Paula Zellner WI.

And one for Clinton: Cheryl Chapman SD, since Clinton won the state.

The NBC NEWS Delegate Counts:
PLEDGED: Obama 1,744 to 1,641
SUPERS: Obama 425.5 to 292
EDWARDS PL.: Obama 21 to 0
OVERALL: Obama 2,190.5 to 1,933

Subject: STATEMENT: Governor Strickland Endorses Barack Obama

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 5, 2008

Governor Ted Strickland issued the following statement this afternoon:

"Today, I announce my wholehearted and enthusiastic support for Barack Obama for President of the United States.

Earlier today I talked with Sen. Hillary Clinton. I thanked her for her friendship and the strong effort she put forth in this historic campaign. I pledged to work with her to unify the party and to make sure that Barack Obama wins the presidency.

Ohioans have suffered as a result of the failed policies of the Bush Administration, including job loss as a result of rising fuel prices.  Ohioans desperately want real, meaningful change. And I believe Barack Obama will bring that change."

I remember that ... him, nodding in the background like a scolded dog. That's no VP material.
Today is the 40th anniversary of Bobby Kennedy’s assassination and I would like all of us – Repubs and Dems alike – to reflect for just a moment on his contributions to our nation.  For those of you too young to remember 1968, RFK campaigned for change and racial unity and to end a hateful war.

Forty years ago we lost a leader who could have changed our nation and made our world a better place.  It’s taken 40 years for someone of RFK’s caliber to pick up the torch and light the way. Barack Obama epitomizes all that was good and morally right with RFK’s dreams and hopes.

The world is watching AND hoping that we, our nation and its voters, do not fail again. Please, become a critical thinker instead of an emotional reactionary.  It’s time to end the war – it’s time to end our racial divide – it’s time to heal.

55 year old white woman in Purple AZ.
Well said Sara - I was only 5 years old when Bobby Kennedy died but I remember his funeral train.  It still brings a tear to my eye when I hear him speak on film during that last campaign.
actually the anniversary of the RFK assasination in tomorrow ...
Super Delegates = Bandwagon Jumpers, these are the same people who in Nov when McCain wins will say, I told you we should have voted for Hillary.

What a waste...the entire Dem Party Officials
yeah i dont see him as VP material hes was like a little puppy standing behind Clinton plus that mailer was correct, she does support NAFTA and so does McCain so maybe they should recycle the mailer.

Obamas fathers day

Sara,Mesa, Az. Well said.  I smiled when you described Arizona as a Purple State.  Wouldn't it be a hoot if John could not carry his own state. But you are right.  Given Obama's energy and being on the right side of the issues, several purple states will turn blue.
I lived in Az for over 20 years.  It's a beautiful state.
Dems - we're uniting.  The primary is over - let's focus our energy on defeating the real target - John McCain.  As an ardent Obama supporter (as well as one of his pledged delegates to the Convention), I welcome Gov. Strickland with open arms.  We are going to need all the help we can get to defeat the Republican machine in November.  Say it with me . . .

YES WE CAN!!!
(now didn't that feel good?) :)
The nay sayers (people who say nay) make me laugh with their comments.

------------------------------------------------

Tom...he was shot on June 5, 1968 and died on June 6, 1968...just setting the record straight.
Ka-ching.  Another bargaining chip just left the pile. Hilarious is like a short-stacked poker player. It's only a metter of time before she is completely busted out of the game.
Who cares about the delegate count at this point? It's over. Moving on the the general now thanks.
And the hits just keep on comin!

Well said Sarah!

Now...if the DNC could just get rid of Joe Scarborough, they would really have some clout.
I will NEVER support Barack Obama.

I will not support him for President; I wouldn't even support him being a resident.  I will not give money to his campaign; I would not save him from a moving train.  His supporters are hateful; to Hillary Clinton they are not greatful.  He is not prepared to be Commander in Chief, his buddy Rezko is now a convicted thief.  He sat in Rev Wright's church for 20 years; he promises to save everyone from all their fears.  I will continue to voice that Obama is the wrong choice.
Thank you, Gov. Strickland!

Since Sara in Mesa, AZ mentioned that today is the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy (thank you, Sara,) I would like to share the quote that was on the front page of our local newspaper this morning:

"What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant.  The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents."  - Robert F. Kennedy (1925-1968)

Words are powerful tools that can hurt or heal.  The words both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain use as they campaign will give you a window into their souls.

Listen carefully...
You people don't get it, do you?

Both are calling for unity and you guys just keep on stabbing.  I'm sure Obama is proud of you.
Democrats will live to regret. Obama's own book reads like an indictment of his unAmerican positions. "I'll stand with the Muslims" etc. For 20 years he was a member of a racist, anti-American church. The script for defeat is already written.

So let it be written, so let it be done.
Why no talk of Deval Patrick of VP?  Going by the current polls MA is a swing state and the voters there will surely vote for BO 2.0 after the outstanding success of BO 1.0.  I believe Mr Patrick also ran on a campaign of change (a la Mr Axlerod) and I expect the voters of MA cannot wait to endorse the outstanding success story of putting an inexperienced newcomer in charge of their state.
I agree that the most rabid of Clinton supporters should stay out of the public scene for a while.
Hopefully Gov. Strickland will help to turn Ohio blue in November, G-D willing.

If Obama plans to vet the possible veeps, (which by the way was a master stroke at backing Bill off), if Rendall is campaigning for the post, Obama does'nt need a special committee in Ed's case.

We can do that for him, right Sierra?

Two names; Peter, and Paul!
No bobbleheads need apply for VP.

Being qualified for Vice president I would hope should go beyond the demonstrated ability to imitate a bobble Head Doll.
It's official . . . hell has frozen over

;-)
'Strickland, notably, stood behind Clinton (on cam) as she famously shouted, "Shame on you, Barack Obama!"' -

Yep, we remember the moment.  That was the moment he blew his VP chances.
At least applaud the Gov for being an ardent supporter of his then choice - Hillary.

OUr hope now is that he surpports Obama withthe same passion as he did Hillary. I also want him to help heal wounds in Ohio and bring that hyper black woman (an elected official in Ohio - you know the  one that ardently supports Hill on TV all the time?)

I would really liek to ask my fellow Obama supporters to please welcome the Clintonites with open arms an be supportive, compassionate, and understanding of their frustrations. Think that most of them had built centuries of hope in seeing a woman as president and this year was the best ever hopeful year for that to happen.

The Heck, we won! So lets extend our arms to our brothers and sisters in the Democtratic Party. Our party has a bidg enough house to house us and them too + more (hint indeps and converted republicans).

Obama is big enough for us all to claim a piece of him people. Share the wealth
I AM OVERJOYED THAT WE ARE MOVING ON AT LEAST SOME OF US . THE MISTAKE THAT  HILLARY IS MAKING IS THAT SHE DOES NOT OWN YOUR VOTE EVEN IF YOU DID VOTE FOR HER. YOUR.  YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOTE  I VOTED FOR  SEN OBAMA I AM HAPPY AS A BLACK PERSON THIS IS A GREAT DAY THAT MOST AMERICAN OF COLOR NEVER DREAM WOULD HAPPEN .  A MAN TO DO THIS LIKE OBAMA I KNOW THAT HE IS NOT PERFECT HE IS ONLY HUMAN NONE OF US ARE . YES WE ALL MADE MISTAKES. SUPPORT HIN NOW IS THE TIME TO GET  BEHIND  HIM. IF YOU ARE AN RACIST AND YOU HATE HIM BECAUSE OF HIS SKIN  YOU WILL TO DEAL WITH YOUR RACISM PROBLEM AND PRAY ABOUT WHY YOU HATE.
Welcome aboard,  but no VP nod.

Obama 08
He developed a taste for kool-aid
Of course this is a nit...but shouldn't Hillary's number be going down?  Why does her number of SD stay the same?

"Strickland, notably, stood behind Clinton (on cam)..."
--And nodded like a fool.  I picture him as a yes-man, which I do not like for VP consideration for Obama.  Probably more having to do with B.H. Obama.  The general impression of inexperience leads me to imagine a pick that will off-set that, something for Obama to fall back on for "experienced judgement", and frankly, a yes-man just won't do for that!
Hi PLEASE KEEP THE DELEGATE COUNT COMING..THERE ARE MANY OF YOUR READERS WHO ARE STILL VERY MUCH INTERESTED IN THAT OUTCOME...THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR GREAT REPORTING..DALENE
SAY NO to Hillary for VP - Petition Drive is on...

Hey Pharoah -- How did that work out for you, anyway?  Didn't Moses take his people and go?  Better hurry and get on board.  You don't want to be left behind when the felucca leaves the dock.

Obama 08/12

What an obvious effort on Gov. Strickland's part to pander to Obama. Governor, where were you in March when we needed you? Oh, that's right -- you were standing there with Hillary.
OBAMA GETS DNC to REFUSE LOBBYIST & PAC MONEY!!!  Haven't seen this posted here but this is leadership!!!  Just went to the DNC and gave them $50.  We can own our party again--show your support for this brave move and donate if you can.
Hillary Clinton is running for VP?? interesting...  This one poll actually includes her in their new 2008 Vice President poll. If you want to see her back Barack or want her out of the race for good, visit

http://www.votenic.com

and help your favorite candidate choose his/her running mate. They started a VP poll last week, and the results from that poll have just been posted. This poll is honest and represents all of America.
Evan Bayh next?  Not now, Ted!  You gotta love this guy.  Hitches his wagon to the wrong horse, but still wants to be V-P.

"Hello Life, Good-Bye Columbus"
Sara in Mesa, AZ  (First Post)

Thank you for an excellent post.  RFK's campaign was the first I was ever involved in, and the last until Obama's.  You are right on the money - that torch has been picked up after all these years and the spirit of RFK is shining through the candidacy of Senator Obama.  I am prouder of my country than any time in 40 long years, including two tours in Vietnam.
Democrats will live to regret. Obama's own book reads like an indictment of his unAmerican positions. "I'll stand with the Muslims" etc. For 20 years he was a member of a racist, anti-American church. The script for defeat is already written.

Pharaoh speaks (Sent Thursday, June 05, 2008 2:19 PM)

If you are going to quote Obama and what he wrote in his book, don't pick it apart-tell the whole picture. He was stating that after the 9/11 attacks, his fear was that the anger/prejudice towards American Muslims was going to escalate as a result of, much like  towards the Japanese Americans during WWII. Puts it in perspective, doesn't it !
It is time to forget primary positions os Hillary supporters and support the ticket of Obama and who his team thinks will make the strongest VP.

To Never, well you've made your dissent known. I think you have a future as the next Dr. Seuss... I do not like that Obama Man. I will not vote for Obama on boat, I will not for Obama riding a goat. I will not vote him here or there. I will not vote for him anywhere!

Hopefully you're just blowing off a little steam.  If not, hopefully cooler heads will prevail.

Margaret, Columbus Ohio,

We Obama supporters who dearly want to make peace, apologize for the Obama supporters who continue to lash out.

However, they are being baited by repubs, and some Hillary supporters too.

You're right, it is just plain mean, and stupid, at this point, on both sides of our dem family.

Pharaoh speaks (Sent Thursday, June 05, 2008 2:19 PM),  Don't forget what happen to you to break your will.  I hope you repent before the first plague.
Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland stood there probably knowing Sen. Clinton's position on NAFTA was all rhetoric, which was found out by the Canadian probe launched March 12, 2008 into the wrongful blame shoved in the direction of Obama's campaign.

Also Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh stood by while Sen. Clinton, speaking into a T.V camera during the Indiana Primary, blamed the Bush administration for the closing down and lose of jobs at the Magnequench plants in Valparaiso, and Anderson Indiana fully knowing the Clinton administration was the true culprit.
WOMEN NEED TO GET INFORMED ABOUT SEN. MC CAIN REFUSAL TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL PAY NOW!

JOHN MCCAIN WHO REFUSED TO VOTE FOR A BILL THAT WOULD GIVE WOMENM EQUAL PAY FOR THE SAME JOB AS MEN.
THE CASE INVOLVED  AFTER 20 YEARS ON JOB THIS WOMAN FOUND SHE MADE 40% LESS WHICH MEAN LESS SOCIAL SECURITY AND LESS PENSION THAT MEN WILL RECEIVE FOR THE SAME JOB

John refused to SUPPORT THE EQUAL PAY LAW, GIVING WOMEN EQUAL WAGES/SALARIES THE SAME AS MEN.  HE WOULD NOT RETURN TO THE SENATE TO VOTE HOWEVER, SAID PUBLICLY THAT GIVING WOMEN EQUAL PAY WOULD CAUSE US TO FILE LAWSUITS, THUS PROTECTING EMPLOYERS AND YET AGAIN BIG BUSINESS.

ANY WOMAN WHO VOTES FOR SEN MC CAIN I REALLY FEEL FOR YOU BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE NOT KEPT UP WITH THE NEWS, MEDIA AND SEN. MC CAIN'S OWN PUBLIC STATEMENT IT'S OUTRAGEOUS.

REPUBLICAN WOMEN CONTINUE TO SUPPORT JOHN MCCAIN

WHAT SPARKED THE BILL IN CONGRESS WAS A WOMAN, LILLY LEDBETTER WHO WORKED FOR GOOD YEAR TIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY,AFTER 20 YEARS FOUND OUT THAT SHE WAS PAID 40% LESS THAN THE MEN ON THE JOB.

THE US SUPREME COURT UPHELD THE EMPLOYER.  AS A RESULT THE DEMS INTRODUCED A BILL AND PUT IT BEFORE THE CONGRESS FOR A VOTE.

NOT ONLY SEN. MC CAIN REFUSED TO VOTE FOR THE EQUAL PAY LAW TO GIVE WOMEN EQUAL WAGES THE SAME AS MEN, HE REFUSED TO SHOW UP FOR THE VOTE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY VOTED OVER WHELMINGLY TO STOP AND DEFEAT THE BILL BY A 56-42 MARGIN

THIS IS PUBLIC RECORD, PLEASE GET INFORMED

NEW ORLEANS — Republican Sen. John McCain, campaigning through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more lawsuits.

HERE'S THE NEWSPAPER ARTICLE MAY 10, 2008

Senate Republicans killed the bill Wednesday night on a 56-42 vote that denied the measure the 60 votes needed to advance it to full debate and a vote. Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had delayed the vote to give McCain's Democratic rivals, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, time to return to Washington to support the measure, which would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination.

McCain skipped the vote to campaign in New Orleans.
"I am all in favor of pay equity for women, but this kind of legislation, as is typical of what's being proposed by my friends on the other side of the aisle, opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems," the expected GOP presidential nominee told reporters. "This is government playing a much, much greater role in the business of a private enterprise system."

The bill sought to counteract a Supreme Court decision limiting how long workers can wait before suing for pay discrimination.

FUNNY THAT JOHN MC CAIN, THE PRESIDENT AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY DID NOT REALIZE THERE WOULD BE NO SUITS IF EMPLOYERS WOULD PAY WOMEN EQUAL PAY CORRECT?

WOMEN IT'S TIME TO GET INFORMED, YOUR SENATOR IS AWARE OF THE DEFEAT OF THIS BILL

Hey guess what OHIO will now be BLUE!!!!!!
It's about time!
I was waiting till he decided to come over to the good side of  the ticket!
ALL HILLARY SUPPORTERS:

PLEASE PROVIDE GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS that Hillary Clinton has that makes her more qualified to be President as compared to Obama..

Keeping in mind that her time as BILL CLINTON's wife during his PRESIDENCY is not EXPERIENCE as an ELECTED OFFICIAL..

Also please remember that she is #39 of 40 something senators as far as the pecking order goes in the SENATE.. that sounds VERY JUNIOR.. just like Obama.. She has been getting by on her LAST NAME not deeds ...

I anxiously await your responses.. because we need to put this inexperience argument to rest.. Because honestly I haven't heard any specific qualifications that were of her own doing that made her head and shoulders better than Obama.

I have listened to her in her speeches and she always says that "she doesn't understand what people didn't enjoy during the 90's peace or prosperity" like she was responsible for either.. Well NEWS FLASH.. she was NOT an ELECTED OFFICIAL during that entire period.. Meaning she was JUST Bills spouse working on pet projects of his...
Anyone think Bill Clinton will eventually throw his superdelagate vote behind Obama for party unity?
UNITY, UNITY, UNITY

CONGRATS TO THE DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS

WELCOME ABOARD GOV. STRICKLAND
