The secret meeting

Posted: Friday, June 06, 2008 9:24 AM by Mark Murray

The New York Times: “The meeting between the two former rivals in Washington was initiated by Mrs. Clinton after Mr. Obama spent the day in Virginia, a state symbolic of his efforts to expand the Democratic reach. The senators instructed their aides not to disclose details of the meeting. They issued an unusual joint statement late Thursday, saying, ‘Senator Clinton and Senator Obama met tonight and had a productive discussion about the important work that needs to be done to succeed in November.’”

The Washington Post says the meeting “was seen as a reconciliation gesture to the senator from New York and her millions of disappointed supporters.”

Another New York Times piece: “It was a political scavenger hunt like this capital had seldom seen before — at least in the current frenzied climate — where the two rivals huddled at an undisclosed location. Only hours earlier, she sought to cool speculation that she was clamoring to be his running mate, but suddenly the city’s media was awash in rumor as word spread of their meeting. The evening began in routine fashion, with Mr. Obama holding a large rally in northern Virginia. Then, he was scheduled to travel by motorcade to Dulles International Airport and fly to Chicago. The motorcade arrived, but Mr. Obama did not, stirring alarm among reporters who had been aboard the campaign plane for 45 minutes as it sat on the tarmac.”

The New York Daily News' lead to the Clinton-Obama meeting last night: "Obama ditched his press entourage and slipped into Washington Thursday night for a mission of delicate diplomacy - a secret rendezvous with Hillary Clinton."

If the media covered the Bush administration half as closely, we may not be in the disastrous mess we are today.
Obviously, since she announced that she would discuss the importance of the presidentical campaign against McCain, Obama would and should have some talking points he would want her to include in her speech.  It makes sense that the two of them would hammer out that speech together.

Plus, I suspect Obama finally found out "what Hillary wants."   For starters, he gets her database, she gets her debt paid off.
I hope that Barack told her that he's not considering her for the VP spot. Also, he wants to know exactly what she's going to say tomorrow. Hillary speech can't be about her, it has to be all about Barack.

If Obama is serious about vetting the candidates for his running mate, then he should go ahead and eliminate Hillary now.  How can she be a serious candidate for vice-president, when she is currently the defendant in a huge fraud lawsuit?

Obama/Sebelius in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
Hillary is trying to force Obama's hand to name her immediately. The longer he goes without doing  so, the less outrage over the outcome there will be among HRC's supporters. The less outrage, the less leverage for her.

Obama-Clinton finally met.  I wonder how this convo played out.  Did you beg for the VP Spot?

I saw on Morning Joe that the Obama press corps is a little uppity on the idea that this meeting went on without them.

Too bad...so sad.  Sorry, but both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama and the DNC as a whole is better served by you guys sitting this one out.
I'm glad Obama and Clinton put one over on the press! That's funny! Sometimes, the media are obstructionists, fanning phantom flames of controversy and unrest. That kind of thing is not needed now when the party must reunify.
As someone who did not endorse Obama, I am impressed at the way they met and how quickly they met. Meeting at one of her big supporters homes (Feinstein), shows that they will unite this party.

I know many don't like Hillary, but she is not her husband...she would be a far better politician and would do Obama well as his VP.
Obama to Clinton...."change is in the air"

Clinton to Obama...."air this you B@ST@RD !!"
This meeting proves that Obama is serious about being willing to meet with his enemies without preconditions.  After that meeting, Iran's president should be a breeze to handle!
Of course no one knows how the meeting went between Hillary and Barack.  All we have is tea leaves to analyze. That being said I cannot resist my analysis of the tea leaves.
1. The VP will be taken off the table. Bill is carrying too much baggage. Library donations and business dealings.
2. Barack will help paying the campaign debt by doing joint fundraisers.
3. The surprise:  Barack will make a tailor made cabinet position for Hillary so she can do her health care project, and children programs.  Hillary may not want to go back to the Senate as too many senators switched to Barack.
4. Maybe later, depending to the election outcome, Hillary may be appointed to Supreme court.
5. Hillary and Barack will work hard together through to November.  That's what the tea leaves say.
I am a BO supporter who doesn't beleive HRC would be a good choice but I have faith in Sen Obama and also in the team he chose to run the VP selection process. If that produces Sen. Clinton as the best choice, so be it.

What I would like is an explanation from Sen. Clinton's supporters as to how McCain is a better choice for a democrat than Obama. Especially a democrat who supports Clinton. Clinton and McCain are so far apart on issues (the War, healthcare, the economy, etc.) that it is staggering.

Also I notice throughout the blogs that Sen Clintons supporters seem to want to blame Sen Obama's supporters for their vote for McCain. That is like sending me to jail because of something my child did. Some Obama supporters (and Hillary supporters) are jerks, but that is why they can't run for anything much less President.
When I saw that last night I started flashing back to when everybody was sitting outside Spears house trying to get a glimps of her!!
First of all, let me just predict with very little uncertainty that Obama will NOT choose Hillary for the VP slot.  I just don't see it.  I think Hillary will rally her supporters to him no matter what and I don't think she really wants the VP role anyway.
I find it amusing that the press was out of the loop, I'm sure they were just in a panic when Obama wasn't on the plane back to Chicago.
Finally, I feel very good about Obama's campaign going forward, I think his organization skills are unparalleled, and I don't think it is going to be as close as people think in November.  I think side by side comparisons that will be glaring when Obama and McCain are debating or at these proposed town hall meetings are going to be disasterous for McCain. Time for change is now and the movement is powerful!!!!!!
Keep reading that Bill Clinton would need to be vetted if HRC were the veep.  I'm wondering when we're really going to vette BO and what about vetting Michelle.  Maybe she can tell us EXACTLY what she said at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition conference.  Some first lady she's going to be!
*****
The Michelle Obama Rant Tape was filmed between June 26th - July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church: specifically the Women’s Event.

Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.

Bill Clinton spoke during the Conference, as did Bill Cosby and other speakers, but not at the panel Michelle attended.

Michelle Obama spoke at the Women’s Event, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant — his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems.

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on “whitey”, and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that’s when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who’s seen this.
I'm sure this had nothing to do with who might be Obama's running mate. Obama's only reason for meeting with her (note - at her suggestion) is that if he didn't, he might create an impression of snubbing her.

Is anyone else really fatigued at the notion that everyone has to walk on eggshells when it comes to Clinton?
Obama: "Hillary, in order to consider you for VP, I need to see your list of donors for the Clinton library."

Clinton: "Uhhh...what else you got?  How about you pay my debt off and I'll disappear."
I doubt Hillary would have fallen to her knees at the feet of Obama and begged for the VP slot, but that would have painted a funny picture.

If Hillary had any brains, she would sit this out, Obama will not beat McCain.
wouldn't you want to be a fly on that wall

Comments like those aren't cool right now.  Come on, give Sen Clinton and Sen Obama a little respect.

I am a huge Obama supporter - but please, back off Sen Clinton.

Has that photo of Obama, and Hillary, facing one another, arms embraced, smiling, Obama looking down, and Hillary looking up, shyly, touched any one other than me.

I don't know when it was taken, but I love it.

I hope we will see that reality going forward.
Ok, ok. We have all heard the dream ticket talk and there is obviously pro's and con's to both.
However, in any case, no matter who Obama chooses, he absolutely NEEDS Hillary's support and hard work.
We tend to view things so much from the surface, but if we look at this situation closely, I honestly think that Obama and Clinton can and WILL resolve any differences they have. Hillary's coming around and at this point, I welcome her joining forces with Obama. We dems cannot overlook the fact that Clinton has built a massive base much like Obama, and only together can they defeat McCain. I'm not saying they have to RUN together, I just think they have to work together and I think they are both showing a humble approach to this and I commend Hillary for showing good faith. We may have all had differences during the primaries, but one thing is certain:
It's time to put that behind us and to now show a united front. A true dem stick to his/her cause.
You can believe that had Clinton won the nomination, Obama would have backed her with his full support.
So, please: If both camps can all be bigger people and come together as one, than so should we, as the PEOPLE.
You Democrats are priceless--Hillary Clinton's life goal is to see universal healthcare passed.  Come on aboard the McCain straight talk express--we "promise" that'll get done on our watch.  LOL
I'm just happy they fooled the media and made them look like idiots, breaking NEWS flashes and them standing around in front of Hillarys house.

Shows them for what they really are -  political papparazi.

Looking for Spears and Hilton shots...babbling about what it all might mean.  Idiots!
What the fly witnessed:

"Hillary, what a campaign! You almost had me there.  You are such a worthy opponent I would love to have you on the ticket. We would unite the party and take the whole thing!  So, to get you and your husband vetted, I need that list of donors to the Presidential Library and financial contacts with the foundation."

. . . .

"Oh, OK then.  Well, I could let you make the unequivocal rejection of such an offer so you and Bill won't have to suffer any embarrassment.  See ya around!"
I think it is great that he was able to slip away from the press unnoticed.  I know everyone is looking for the great scoop but I think Obama and Clinton needed to do it on their own terms.  It is called RESPECT.
Let's face it Obama can win alot easier if Hillary is on the ticket.  She will bring 18,000,000 voters-more voters than Obama got.  ALso, Some of her policies like Healthcare are more popular.

Finally, The Democractic Party is the Party of inclusion so why shouldn't a woman be on the ticket.

Anne, PA
It is probably good they met.  I hope Hillary stressed that she does not want on the ticket. I am sure Obama does not want her either.

It does not matter to me who he puts on the ticket.  I won't support an Obama ticket no matter who is on it.

I have re-registered as an independant and will vote McCain. The DNC failed me when they did the hatchet job on Hillary.

Obama is too green to be president.  His waffling on the Israel is the latest example.  First he says this and then he says that.  Too green by half.  He is scary and no one really knows him nor what he stands for, if anything.

Seems to me he has one thing in mind.  Promoting Africa, denouncing his mother's race, black liberation (again), black supremacy, standing by his bittergate opinions.  Obama & Michelle are in LOCKSTEP with Wright, Ayers, Khalidi, Dohrn, Pfledger, Rezko and others.  They are elitist but have NO class i.e the dress she wore on Tuesday and the swat Obama gave her on her butt as she left the stage...no class.

Michelle Obama is a loose cannon.  No Obama--would not be good for America--OBAMA IS TOO RISKY BY HALF.

That Senators Schumer, Rangel and others continue to promote the VP position for a Clinton makes one question their judgement.  Surely they know that the vetting process would reveal a multitude of serious questionable, perhaps even litigable deals with possible felons and foreign entities.  That they continue to claim that she ran a great campaign, too, makes one wonder about their ethical standards -- the lying, cheating, rules-changing, deception and organizational mis-managment was a disgrace.  We've had more than enough of that ilk of slick willy and shrilly hilly.  I'm sure the Obama team will tap the available reservoir of truly worthy Democrats who operate under better standards and values than those reflected by that pair.   We need leaders who honor fairness, honesty, integrity, character and transparency -- all of which the Clintons have shown a serious lack of.

So now they'll sit on their ill-gotten millions and go hat in hand leveraging for Obama to pay off the millions they squandered in their dirty campaign. And god only knows what other dirty deals they'll try to broker.  How typical that is for this sleazy pair!

Hillary is not the enemy! You are a disgrace making fun of Hillary Clinton.  She represents one of America's finest women.  She is a role model to many American women.  If you want to unite the Party why don't you start by thanking Hillary for giving this Party 18,000,000 voters.

Anne, PA
Grant, Salt Lake City,
Yeah see you around without your 18 million voters Hillary.

I don't think so, BO can't afford that.  I hope Hillary does not lower herself to that level to become that guys VP.
He will lose and I am an ardent Hillary supporter but I will vote for McCain against BO no matter what even if she does take the VP position.  No BO for me and no Michelle "Whitey" Obama for damn sure.
Another thing you folks need to know is that there was no wrong doing in White Water.  My brother was one of the lawyers in that deal, there was nothing there, absolutely nothing and the Russellville and Mena drug running is a total figment of someone's imagination.  NOthing there folks, the Clintons are honorable and truthful not to mention experienced and
good for our country.
Hillary is holding the votes she received in the primary and her delegates to manipulate her way into a job, let us hope she isn't selected as Vice President. The Clinton's cannot be trusted in the political arena, they really will stoop to anything to feed their ambitions.
The Clinton supporters that say they will vote for McCain, my answer is to please read the platform of the Repubican party.  If you want to vote against everything you need for yourself and family.  You should then vote for Senator McCain.  The Republican party is playing with you and will not be for your best interest.  Remember your choice Senator Clinton, could not have been elected.  She and former President Clinton have to much bagage.
I like the picture too.
