A different kind of refund

Posted: Friday, June 06, 2008 2:12 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Jim Popkin
Fans of screaming television infomercials have heard the slogan hundreds of times: “Satisfaction guaranteed or your money back!” Improbably, the late-night mantra also applies today to politics, and to thousands of donors who have contributed to Clinton’s stunted presidential campaign.

That’s right, when Clinton officially drops out of the race tomorrow, thousands of donors who contributed to her general-election war chest soon will be entitled to a refund. Under federal election law, Sen. Clinton must either refund the donations or, within 60 days, must write to each general-election donor requesting their permission to use the funds for her future Senate or (gasp) perhaps presidential campaigns.

Thousands of well-heeled Clinton fans will be entitled to rebates. As of the end of April, Clinton had collected $23.7 million for the general election, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Many of those hardcore donors gave the maximum, or $2,300 each for the primary and general elections, and might welcome a $2,300 refund check this summer. But presumably most will encourage Sen. Clinton to hold on to the money, to battle on another day.

Not so for former Republican presidential contender Rudy Giuliani. During the campaign, he raised nearly $6 million in donations for his ill-fated general election campaign. According to the Federal Election Commission, he's now refunded nearly every penny to donors.

Hillary Clinton loaned her campaign a stunning $11.4 million, and could conceivably be able to use some of her general-election leftovers to pay off that debt. Here’s how the Center for Responsive Politics explained the law in an article in January:

“To pay off debts from their primary campaigns, candidates can tap general-election funds from contributors who didn't max out in the primary, with the donor's permission. If, for example, Hillary Clinton doesn't make it to the general election season, she'll have to go back to the donors who've given her at least $16.7 million toward November's election and get their permission to use it to pay off primary debts, transfer it to her Senate committee or use it in a future presidential campaign.”

There will be some long faces tomorrow at the National Building Museum in Washington, when Senator Clinton finally bows out. For a few in the crowd, though, the prospect of a $2,300 refund check may help ease the pain.

Ok this is the wildest, most far-fetched, one too many bong hits dream I have EVER heard.
Clinton will NOT refund a single dime. These people (her and Bill) took furnishings from the White House when they left.
You think she doesn't believe that money is HERS?????
She claims ownership of the eighteen million votes she recieved and that isn't even a tangible object.

Thanks for the laugh.... now please stop... my side is hurting already.

JOIN"ABC"!!!!!!!
Anyone
BUT
Clinton

Maybe they could request free rides in the black 'Hillocopter' she was flying around Iowa in for all those weeks!
DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH.
I'll believe it when I see it.  Hillary's struggles are only just beginning if she doesn't deliver Saturday.

Let's hope her donors are willing to turn that money over to the DNC or the nominee.

http://midwestmoms.blogspot.com
that is evil...they should let her pay off her debt, and give the remainder to Obama
IT'S A TRICK!  SHE'S NOT DROPPING OUT!
I hope that Hillary's supporters don't ask for refunds and allow her to use their money to pay off her massive campaign debt, now estimated at around $30 million.  Such a shame that so much money was wasted in infighting when we need every dime to fight the tyrant trying to cover up "NeoNazi" Bush's excesses.

Hopefully Hillary will get her debt paid back without hurting Obama's fund raising.  Hopefully the DNC will start raising some serious money as the RNC has done.  We can't afford another 4 years of economic warfare being waged against the poor and middle class by the rich and greedy repugnant ones.

Go Obama 08/12!
MSNBC please drop the Clinton stuff already.  I am sure she knows that!  MSNBC do some real reporting on the Iraq war vote and how we were lied too.  What is congress going to do about it.  Remember 4100 troops died for nothing and you guys are worried about Clintons campaign funds.  Come on get with it a crime was comitted pure and simple.  Please keep digging for more info on this.
Hopefully Hillary will be smart enough to pay herself back last.  As long as she pays off all the little vendors that have contributed to her then if she loses some of her own personal money then that's okay since she and Bill can make money hand over fist.

Go Obama 08/12!
It would be nice if they transferred it to the DNC.

PS. crat3,

Get a grip.  How people vote in a primary is really no indication of how they vote in the general.  Any true democrat knows that the difference between a democrat and a republican is VAST.  You are entitled to vote however you want; but stop perpetuating this myth that 100% of the votes Hillary got in those swing states will not vote for Obama.  Polls showed only 20-30% SAID they would not support him.  So of the 17.7MM (if you cheat and count MI where there was NO WAY to even write in your vote for Obama - apparently at least 30K tried); at most, 5MM don't vote for Obama.  They have not figured out a way to quantify the number of Independents and Obamicans; but I am putting my money on the fact that Obama is favored to pick up millions more nationwide.  In three heavily favored, long time Republican districts - democrats were elected to those seats, this in spite of advertising linking the candidates to Obama and Reverend Wright.  The signal from the field, throughout the country is that people are starving for change.  McCain cannot run on a platform of Reform, Prosperity and Peace.  It just isn't plausible.  I get that you are passionate about Hillary.  She represents some very good times in our recent history; but she lost.  At the end of the primary he simply had more delegate votes, which was the metric at the onset of the contest.  I think your passion and fervor would be well served in designing or implementing a better primary metric.  This one is in the history books.  Your own candidate has promised to work every bit as hard to make sure a democrat is in the white house.  I agree with her.  This is not about these two individuals, or even you and me.  This is about the future of our country.  I do not want another soldier to die needlessly because a candidate has decided to draw a line and refuses to listen to any argument that doesn't support a continued failed War policy.  Doubling down on this war is OUT OF TOUCH with 67% of America.  I encourage you to search long and hard about the things that really matter to you and the people you love.  If your heart still tells you to vote for McCain, then do it.  But quit hiding behind the pretext that Hillary was robbed or cheated.  The vast majority of people do not believe it and you posting it every day will not make it so.  I would love to discuss ways to improve our nominee selection process.  I am open to hearing your ideas on these and other issues.  For now, find a way to heal - be constructive - and select a candidate that represents your values.  That is your right and responsibility as a citizen.
I'm reminded of that song by the group "Genesis" called "Throwing It All Away". That's exactly what happen when they gave money to Hillary.
I don't get it. Why have donor money go into a mythical general election fight when you are struggling to win the nomination? You can always raise general election money after you have the nomination.
Who donates to a candidate's general election during during the primaries?  Is this commonplace?

The fact that Hillary Clinton had received these funds was often pointed out in the news.  But did other candidates get donations to the general election in the beginning of the primaries too?
This is too funny. Now we know exactly what Hillary and Obama talked about at DiFis house yesterday. Hillary said she wouldn't endorse McCain if Obama paid off her campaign debt. How's it feel Obamaites, all the hard earned cash you sent to Obama is being used to pay off Hillary!
MSNBC WE ARE SICK OF HEARING ABOUT HRC!!!!!!!!!!
Hillary is working under the old pottery barn rule: She broke it and You bought it.

Go Obama 08/12!
Of course she'll try to use it.  I'm sure there are plenty of other gradeschool kids who sold their bikes and videogames to pay the 100 millionaires for their failed campaign.  Her refunding the money would require a modicum of shame which we know doesn't exist in the Clintons
For many, the hopes and dreams of the future rested with Hillary and they put their money where their spirit was. That is honorable.

Now as we look to unify the party, those dreams are best represented by Obama. My hope is that those ardent Clinton supports will bring their passion to him as we come together to change the World and take Washington out of the lobbyists hands once and for all.

Hillary went 'all in', when she kept going, and going.......

The article earlier that assessed her loss of approval with AA's, and now this refund horror of a headache, brings an image of Hillary, playing poker, and slowing pushing her massive mountain of chips toward the pot, with both hands. She gambled everything, in order to be President.

Now, she's got a nightmare on her hands.
Wow! No wonder she was appearing so irrational in her attempts to stay in the race.  It makes alittle more sense now.  I would guess that most of her supporters will allow her to keep the money for expenses.  Won't it cost alot just to contact them?   Well, we still do not have to worry, she will have gas in her vehicle and food in her refrig.  Unlike some Americans.
All part of the process.

How is this relevant to the General Election?

What are the general election issues both candidate represent? Let's keep are eye on November.
GOOD RIDDANCE TO HILLARY-cry in your beer-as you outdrink JOHN EDWARDS.
HP Boston, Susan in Miami and J Merle.......

Just a few people that are going to get a huge windfall if she returns all the money they gave to Hillary.......

Too bad it isn't considered a loan......
The interest rate alone would bankrut her........

How is she supposed to give the money back if she is $20 million in the hole????????
Noodle Cadoodle:

Even if is true, we can console ourselves with the knowledge that Obama is the 2008 Democratic party nominee for President of the United States.

Meanwhile, Hillary needs to meet with her legal team and begin preparing her defense in the campaign finance fraud lawsuit that has been filed against her.

Obama/Sebelius in 2008.  Integrity matters and the Clintons have none.
I notice the Obama fans don't want the word "Clinton" to ever pass the lips of any Democrat ever again. Now that's a lot of hatred, but what they do not realize is that Hillary won nearly half the delegates and won the ever popular (at least in 2000) Popular Vote. Of course this year, that doesn't matter for the Obama loving fans and the media, but I digress. The Clintons still have an important role in this election, and if they decide not to help Obama, then he will more then likey lose this fall. So Obama fans, don't get to uppity in your Clinton hatred. The one person you need the most in this election is Hillary, and without her, you lose.
Eric, Salinas

I am a full 100% Obama supporter, and disagree with John McCain on almost every issue. As much as I agree that we need to keep him from becoming President, I have a real issue with you calling one of our bravest war heroes a "tyrant".

I despise McCain politically, and personally a lot of the times as well. But he paid a huge price for this country, and to me that deserves a little more respect than calling him a "tyrant".

C'mon, we know better than this.
I now you love the Clintons just get over it, she is out of the race.  Please stop giving her so much press.  You guys will not let her adjust her life after this campaign.  Leave her alone please, I support Obama but leave this woman alone.

I worst crime was commited since water-gate, you should be all over the Bush crime family and oil prices.  Please do your job and help the American people.

And that day may be today. Obama and his ilk have  ticked off Hillary so bad with their slimy campaigning that she might just be getting ready to run as an Independent!
Sara Miles

That works both ways.  Had Hillary won the nomination, she would need Obama and his supporters.

I see you are using the same tired "popular vote" argument.  No one really knows who won the popular vote, since some states do not tally it.  Both candidates got approximately 18,000,000 votes.  The exact number for either candidate cannot be determined.  Anyway, it is a moot point, since Obama supporters in Michigan could not vote for their candidate.  I am pretty sure that he would have received some votes in that state.

Just like everyone else, take out a second mortgage on the house. Good terms, easy credit, attractive adjustable rates, Operators are standing by.

What do you think the Clintons credit score is? I'm guessing in the 400's.
Who cares? She will just write another book about the campain and all the Clinton zombies will buy a copy and pay for her debt. Maybe she can call it: How To Screw Up A Sure Thing
Now I understand why she did'nt want to give up. She has alot to lose, but so does our country. So now is the time for us to unite, stand strong, and fight for our RIGHTS.
I don't have any problem with Obama helping to pay off Hillary's campaign debts (which of course should not include refunds to donors - that's just ridiculous).  We're all one party.  I hope Hillary's supporters remember that in November, too.
Naw, Hillary has to give the donors a choice and these fickle people will say "Gimme my money back so I can donate to the man that I've known and loved all my 'democratic' life - the great war hero - my best friend who truly cares about me - John McCain".
In reality, Clinton should donate that 23.7 mil to Obama so Obama can start using that to pay off her 30 mil debt!
This Thing Is Not Over - LMAO - you republicans are really stupid.

Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound.  Do a little research before you try to divide the party.

She couldn't do that this year even if she wanted too and she doesn't anyway because she is devoted to the Democrat cause just like the rest of us.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
This Thing Is Not Over (Sent Friday, June 06, 2008 2:51 PM

Yes, "this thing" is over.
She raised over 200 Million dollars, won every debate, won most of the big, critical swing states and ended up with (not counting FL/MI) 49.5% of the vote compared to 50.4% for Obama.

She won big margins of White women, Latinos, Jews and gays - all of whom are core consistencies of the Democratic Party.

She dominated the last 3 months of primaries and even won a double digit upset in SD the night Obama claimed the nomination.

And a note to obama and his supporters: She better end up on the ticket as VP or many of her passionate 17 million voters will not be supporting the democratic nominee.

We love you Hillary!
What? No money to pay off her debts?!? Sheesh...it must be sexism!
Keep dreaming. I'm sorry, but I'm fed up to with these Krazy Supporters. These are the women that stalk their boyfriends and have no acceptance. Grow up little girls. Sometimes you have to do BIG GIRL STUFF! It's empowering, try it sometime!
