Staking out Hillary's staff party

Posted: Friday, June 06, 2008 2:51 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
They've just turned up the music in the backyard of Hillary Clinton's Whitehaven home here in DC. We've seen familiar faces come through in the last 15 minutes, mostly the press advance. A handful of young staffers are also making their way in.

Bill and Chelsea Clinton are at the house with Hillary, who we are told is dressed casually and already out mingling with her guests. Bill will be heading out early, though, to speak at the City Year Convention in Boston tonight. And Chelsea also will depart a bit later to speak at a Texas State Democratic Convention. Both should be back tomorrow for her formal concession.

The stakeout press is trying to keep cool and hydrated outside. It almost feels like covering the arrivals at an award show, without the red carpet and celebrities.

*** UPDATE *** Terry McAuliffe just got roped into doing a quick gaggle (it didn't take much convincing)... Looking relaxed, McAuliffe stopped by to speak briefly with reporters, saying the entire campaign staff is looking to "take some time, relax, and do everything we can to help Barack Obama."

"It was a great campaign, 17 months, everybody worked their hearts out," he said. "Talk about her breaking the glass ceiling, and I think she shattered it. She got in, she got more than 18 million votes, she won a lot of important states. I think I speak for all the staff here, they’re very proud. It was an exciting campaign. It was very close, but now we do everything we can to help Barack Obama become the next president, because it’s about the issues."

McAuliffe said Clinton's mood is "great." Asked if she'd soon do a campaign swing for Obama, he said she would "do anything."

"She has made that clear, she will do anything she can to help Barack Obama," he said. "If he wants her to travel every day she’ll do that."

He would not give much insight into what she'd say tomorrow, saying only that it would get people "pumped up" and build the momentum for the final five months.

As for McAuliffe himself? "Disneyland," he said, with his five children.

*** UPDATE II *** Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee described Clinton's comments to her staff as a touching exchange, and said they were "celebratory." She thanked her staff for everything they did, for putting their lives on hold, and credited them for the some 18 milion people who voted for her.

She encouraged everybody to come to her event tomorrow, saying it would be a critical step in bringing the party together. She reminded them that since she's been voting in the last 40 years, there have been ten presidential elections. Democrats have won only three of them, which she said was a very sobering fact.

She said that George Bush has proved why its important to have a Democratic president, and that they need to ensure that happens. She ended by saying she wanted to ensure we all stay in touch.

Elleithee wouldn't describe whether people were crying, but said it was touching.

Cheers...to you Hillary!  You do deserve this celebration.

Obama 01/09
Again, as much as Hillary got on my last nerve, while she, and Obama duked it out, I can't help but tear up reading this.
Sounds fabulous and magical. Is that tall guy who stood behind her in both the West Virginia/Kentucky and South Dakota/Montana speeches there?
Someone needs to make sure they have a designated driver for Sydney Blumenthal.
Stakeout press or PAPARAZZI!!!  I can only laugh and maybe quit watching, then maybe we can all settle down and get the job done of electing a Dem in November.  No more Clinton star watch for me.  I have respect for all three of them, and I wish them the best, but I'm gonna tune out.  "And now for something completely different!"  GObama!
Is the news so slow today( record forclosures, record unemployment, record oil prices) that you feel compeled to report on a backyard bbq? Come on guys.

Read the silly article in NJ about maybe, just maybe, Hillary might have been the better choice for the Democrats...

I am warmed by the thought that John McCain is the weakest candidate the republicans have proffered since Bob Dole...

Good OLD boys are good, but then they are... old.

old news is bad news.

SO why do I care what CLINTONS are doing.  Only concern at this point that while they are on their "speaking" trips they are promoting our Presidential Candidate Senator Barack Obama??????  And not Hillary Clinton.....we will see where her loyality lies, and so far she has no loyality except to CLINTON.  How sad

And just to state a fact.  I can guarentee you all if Hillary had won the nomination NONE OF YOU WOULD BE ATTEMPTING TO FORCE OBAMA ON HER.  His name would not even be mentioned by this biased and often racist MEDIA.  So let us all be real about this.  If all of this campaign had been on other foot - DNC, MEDIA, SENATORS, ALL OF YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD OBAMA TO GET OUT LONG TIME AGO.  But no, this is the Clintons, they are give the respect even if she nor Bill deserve it
And there's George Soros! And he brought the Democrats favorite leading lady, his checkbook!! SOOooiee!!
No matter what people think of the Clintons - Hillary has made history and she's to be commended for that.  I don't agree with the way she has run her campaign or the way she's treated Obama as the nominee.

After the dust has settled, there is one thing we can all agree on - "She may have lost, but she did it her way".

Is Harriet Christian invited to this party?
Monica?!?
Thank you, Hillary.  Please encourage your disappointed supporters to focus on November now.  We've got to band together to correct this downward spiral the GOP has put our country in by defeating McCain.
Thank you for updating with the quotes from Terry McAuliffe.
Frankly, it sounds like a great wind down to a very long campaign.  Let Sen Clinton and her staff, supporters and everyone -- have some fun and enjoy!

Looking forward to tomorrow --

No, it is not an awards show.  It's a staff party.  How come you did not cover Romney's or Edwards, or any other canidate.  And, WHO CARES.  MSNBC as well as all the other MSM are giving "what's her name" more then twice the coverage then Obama and McCain combined!

Could you PLEASE cover something important to our lives...
It's hard to see why the Clinton campaign complains about her being treated unfairly by the media.  I don't recall any other candidates who dropped out having the press stake out their homes afterward...
And Terry McAuliffe - what can I say?  Last week you were all about Hillary because that's what she paid you to do.  Now you're all about Obama because that's what Hillary is paying you to do.  Not that I'm complaining, we'll take all the support we get - but man, are you able to sleep at night?
It's just a slow news day.  If you dont want to hear about Clinton, dont read the article.  Not reason to rant about it.
The Clintons certainly deserve their "news weekend", but I sincerely hope that once this occurs, the focus of the general election news will focus on the presumptive Dem candidate, Barack Obama!  His day in the sun,has unfortunately been delayed- this is his, and the country's, historic moment!

Middle-aged white woman for Obama/Warner 08
MSNBC are they going to play paint ball and duck!  Geezzz!
Still the snide remarks. She didnt drop to her knees and bow how awful. She had better do this right tomorrow and she better do it with enough enthusiam. You guys are so punk. She will do it because she is a party person through and through even when they pressured her threw her over to be condensending to the black guy. Apeasment isnt the reason for pres. NOTE  you people think those women will come around and fall in line better look at the amount of new independants. Not all will leave the party but not all those that stay will vote Obama. You cannt give her a thing just demand and threaten well you will be talking to your selves.
"Don't play their game. Let's not get baited the same way Hillary did. Obama needs to learn he doesn't make the rules. That's like being in the middle of NBA chanpionship and saying "let's change the rules to make it more even." How obsurd.
Risky Obama 08 = Risky future for America (Sent Friday, June 06, 2008 2:11 PM)"

That's EXACTLY what Hillary did, not Obama.  Maybe if you paid attention and thought for yourself instead of regurgatating talking points you might get further.
I never thought I would see the day, but Terry finally said something encouraging about Obama, something wholly respectful.

It is indeed about the issues.

This is a wonderful step forward!

Another priceless post!  ROFLMAO

Terry, as long as you keep Mark Penn far FAR away from the Obama campaign, I'm with you, buddy!
Did HRC and some of her staff work my last nerve's nerve throughout this campaign process? Absolutely.

Am I a staunch Obama supporter? You better believe it.

However, I don't see the need to tear down a celebration between Sen. Clinton and her staff as a way to show their appreciation of one another and all that they've been together these last 17 months. I think this last hurrah should be shown some respect because it comes at a time when many of these folks are likely hurting and feeling deeply disappointed as would anyone who has put their heart and soul into something only to not see the dreamed for outcome emerge. I would be upset if the shoe were on the other foot and people were yapping unkindly about Sen. Obama showing his gratitude and thanks to his staff for a job well done if the shoe were on the other foot.

People are trying to cope with all of this in their own way and I don't see how anyone trying to blow off steam, share some laughs, memories and smiles at a barbeque is cause for anyone's critcism. These people are also our fellow democrats and deserve respect for that alone. We can't change what did or didn't happen but we can all start treating each other with the same dignity we claim to be fighting for in restoring this country to greatness again. Just a thought.
Even though I am a Obama supporter, I would do anything to help Hilliary in what she needs to get out of debt. I can now show my daughter and nieces that they can do anything that they want too. My prayers and feelings are with her, Bill and Chelsea.
Ummm, yes Hillary should do what she can to help Obama, but unless she's the VP candidate, I don't want my Senator spending all her time galavanting around the nation when she should be doing the work she promised to do as the Senator from NY!

Remember Hillary, you are still the Junior Senator from NY with lots of catch up work to do in that capacity.
If she will campaign heavily for Obama and do everything she can to help him elelcted - I personally would like to apologize to her. In the end she is better then I thought.
Wow, Kathe in Oakland...let it go, dear!!  When Obama is being sworn in, will you still only be spouting Hillary hate?
I'm an Obama supporter, but I still would've loved to see McAuliffe pull a move like the beginning of the Godfather: shove the cameramen off the property, rip out the film, and smash the cameras on the ground.

She's out. Let her have the party in piece, you media vultures!

Capice?
AM HAPPY TO HEAR SHE IS IN GOOD SPIRIT AND THAT TELLS ME SOMETHING GOOD IS IN THE HORIZON. SHE IS OUR GIRL AND IF SHE REALLY CONVINCES HER SUPPORTERS, WE WILL GIVE HER OUR RIGHT HAND. SHE HAS DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB AND WE ARE PROUD TO BE PART OF HER.

Ron Brownstein now checking in for the limping David Broder...

The passing of the pomp.

Yes, GObama, WIN. Goodby Hillary, Bill and Chelsa. I was glad to open paper and see them on page 10. Democrats can and will win; just look at the economy. Do you need food, gas, air? Vote Democratic.
So who is wearing what?

No doubt.
"She'll do anything"...to be Veep.  Let her "travel every day" to places like Siberia and Outer Mongolia.
Let everyone take a breath and unwind. A true Democrat will vote for Barack. As a true Democrat, I would have voted for Hillary if she were the nominee. She has good qualities and bad qualities as we all do. We are not little gods and goddesses running around. There is but one "ultimate authority". Now let's put a democrat in the WH. Happy Friday everyone.
Oh no, you mean Terry McAuliffe has procreated!!!  Can the world take 5 little McAuliffe's?
Terry can't speak for Hillary.  We'll see what she says and how she says it tomorrow.  Its sad that she is not trust worthy.
Wish I was there - kind of feels like the end of an era . . .

Despite all of the ugliness that I have witnessed over the past months, I will say this - Hillary Clinton is a force to be reckoned with. Believe that.
She and her staff deserve the accolades. Hard fought, although I often disagreed with tactics.  I wish them well.
