McCain: Bush wiretapping 'ambiguous'

MIAMI, FL – The question of whether or not President Bush overstepped his constitutional power by authorizing warrantless checks of Americans' international communications after 9/11 is "ambiguous," McCain said yesterday. But, he added, he hopes not to dwell on the issue.

"It's ambiguous as to whether the president acted within his authority or not," McCain told reporters at a press conference in the Florida Everglades yesterday.

The question of presidential authority has been a hot topic in past weeks, as key surveillance legislation has been gummed up in Congress. A sticking point has been the question of whether telecommunications companies can be prosecuted retroactively for participating in the post-9/11 surveillance. McCain, who believes that they should not face such penalties, called for the quick passage of that legislation, saying of the wiretapping debate that "the whole issue can be resolved by passing the FISA bill."

A New York Times story yesterday described McCain's views on warrantless wiretapping as increasingly aligned with those of the Bush Administration, according to the writing of a key adviser, Doug Holtz-Eakin. Holtz-Eakin wrote in a letter to the National Review that Sen. McCain believes that the president did not overreach when he empowered the National Security Agency to monitor telephone calls and emails without issuing warrants after 9/11.

McCain said today that, in his own presidency, he would abide by laws passed by Congress; he has criticized the Bush Administration in the past for its use of presidential "signing statements," for example, that permit non-enforcement of Congressional action.

But about on the matter of the president's past actions in the wake of the 2001 attacks, he urged a look to the future. "I'm not interested in going back," he said. "I'm interested in addressing the challenge we face today of trying to everything we can to counter organizations and individuals that want to destroy this country."

"So, there's ambiguity about it," he later added. "Let's move forward."

McCain's service to America is ambiguous.

Ambiguous???

McCain wants to move forward, not being in the mood to dwell upon much less mete out punishment, for the broadest wholesale violation of American citizens' rights EVER?

Ok then.  Don't worry Mr. McCain, we the voters will take care of business, and bring the wood to every polling place in America this November.

Local Republican candidates on this ballot will flee from you in droves, even farther and faster than you run from Bush.
Bush and McCain are both made of the same cloth. They will continue to wreck our economy, foriegn policy, and our standing in the world. McCain has NOTHING to run on other than his war record of being a Vietnam POW.
And we want this guy as President?....like hell.
And this candidate is strong on national security? He can't tell the authority of the commander in chief?  Why doesn't someone in the media question him on this ?
Am at one of those moments recalling the addage: "if you have nothing nice to say of someone/something, say nothing"    So it must be in thinking of McCain's recent words and positions.   (for now)
Is this what the definition of "is" could be if it was, but if it wasn't, it might- but then again on the other hand, either yes, or no, I don't know, but possibly could be?

And these are the same fools that keep asking "change"?? what's THAT supposed to mean?? Change?? WHAT changes could Obama be talking about???
McCain cannot look back at all, because if he did, he would have to consider putting several of his high ranking Republican Party members in the hoosegow!!
McCain...Bush...McCain...Bush...McCain...Bush...  hhhmmmm... same dishonest aroma... same unpleasant taste... Sorry, but I just can't tell the difference.
Ambiguous? YTou have to be kidding me. C'mon Sen McCain, I was your number one fan back in 2000 when you stood for something. Quit Outbushing, Bush! My goodness. Who are you today, I don't recognize you anymore. Voting against the new GI Bill? Against the new Global Warming Iniative? et al, etc. I have no choice but to support Sen Obama. America needs to regain it's direction and greatness, lost these past seven years. As a retired military vet, white, male, I support the only choice. The promise of a better tomorrow. Senator Obama!!!!
A weasely statement, McCain.  I do not trust you to uphold and defend the Constitution.
McCain's statement just cemented this year's election key note: McCain, More of the Same!
Of course he doesn't want us to dwell on it, He doesn't want us to dwell on the fact he will continue Bush's raping of the constitution
Every day I'm amazed even more at the fact that there are people that are willing to vote for this man. He might end up being worse than another Bush term.
It is time for all American that believe in been, fair, firm and consistant in dealing with day to day issues that may effect our Country, the greatest country on this planet,so I'm very concern about the direction in which our great nation is headed, its time for a change. Thank god almighty for Obama,my man.
McCAin thinks that looking at inconsistancies between his voting record and what he says is negative campaigning.  Amazing
How is wiretapping of the international calls of suspected terrorists a problem?
It's what helps keep me safe.
I can't believe I supported McCain in 2000. Either he has changed markedly since then, or he hoodwinked those of us who thought him a truly independent, principled public servant. It turns out that he's just a do-anything-to-get-elected politician.

Fool me once...
Donna,

I agree with you whole heartly.  He will not speak out because of fear of upsetting his base but wants to claim that he differs from his twin.

He wants the republican base to think that they are identical twins, but he wants independents and democrats to think that they are no relations.

Wrong is wrong and if you can not speak out against wrong then in my opinion you have a character flaw which is not a quality that I approve of as a leader.
But, this should not be something new for any of us.  He has flip-flopped on many issues in the past 8 years just to run for president this year.  He abandoned his mavrick brand to be accepted by the republican base, which shows yet another character flaw.
Ambiguous? I tell you, if McCain wins, it's not because he beats Obama on the issues.
I'm anxious to see how many morons will actually vote for this guy.
I'm anxious to see how many morons will actually vote for this guy.
McSane has lost his mind. While he was in that air boat in Fl on friday, someone should've push him off. The lies that this goverment and the McSane have put this country in a world wind. Look that expeirence issue is a shame, I hope that you'll isn't buying into that because we have The Bush's, The Cheney's and That The Duck Donald with expeirence add up to 100 plus years and look where it have gotten us. The gas, food, housing, job lost, airlines,The Dow, war and the disrespect around the world. Look at the country that Bush call friends. They have turn there backs on us, including the Oil countrys. Just a few weeks ago he when over to the Middle East pleading with them to increase supplies, what they told him was pretty much to go to Hell, that's sad. McSane hasn't gave anyone any type of hope, The plans he is talking about is someone else stuff. Like he said, he isn't going to run away from Bush. Please don't go out like a champ. The Bad New Bears. A blind man with No arms can do a better job them McBush. America open your eyes and see the light. It's time for us to take this country into the next level and back on Top. Can't let the same ol' BS keep going on in D.C. So let all say together. NO McSANE in 08'
