Obama: Outside group watch

Posted: Monday, June 09, 2008 9:10 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The Boston Globe takes a look at Willie Horton ad-producer Floyd Brown's anti-Obama web site. "Brown is raising money for a series of ads that he says will show Barack Obama to be out of touch on an issue of fundamental concern to voters: violent crime. One spot already on the Internet attacks the presumptive Democratic nominee for opposing a bill while he was an Illinois legislator that would have extended the death penalty to gang-related murders."

Newsweek wonders if Obama’s perceived weakness among Jewish voters is a myth. “Barack Obama received a standing ovation when he proclaimed his unwavering support for Israel to the influential lobbying group AIPAC last week. In her own AIPAC speech, Hillary Clinton said she was sure ‘that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel.’ But Clinton's reassuring words didn't soothe the wounded feelings of some prominent Jewish Obama supporters, who charge that Clinton campaign operatives manufactured fear about Obama's ethnic background and doubt about his loyalty to Israel in an effort to turn Jewish primary voters against him.”

More: “Obama has trailed Clinton among Jewish voters in polling matchups against John McCain (though both beat him soundly). But Obama has many high-profile Jewish fund-raisers, and aides claim his support among Jews will equal or surpass John Kerry's 75 percent in 2004. McCain has enlisted high-profile help of his own to help win Jewish votes: Connecticut Sen. Joseph Lieberman, a self-described ‘independent Democrat’ who has criticized Obama's leadership qualities, has agreed to head up a booster group called Citizens for McCain. In a brief but animated Senate floor confrontation last week, according to a campaign aide who asked for anonymity when talking about private discussions, Obama told Lieberman he was surprised by Lieberman's personal attacks and his half-hearted denials of the false rumors that Obama is a Muslim. (The aide says Lieberman was ‘strangely muted’ during the exchange; a Lieberman spokesman says the chat was ‘private and friendly.’)”

First Read .... you guys help with the false headlines about Obama's perceived problem with Jewish voters.
It's keeps being repeated by your articles and headlines, but you offer up no proof.

Get the proof first before you put up the headlines.
"One spot already on the Internet attacks the presumptive Democratic nominee for opposing a bill while he was an Illinois legislator that would have extended the death penalty to gang-related murders."

Ha!  I posted that here during the primaries, but MSNBC never reported a word about it.  Policy was never front and center in the primaries...just image.

----------------------------------------------

Senator Obama opposed the legislation on extending the death penalty to gang-related murders because those crimes are ALREADY subject to the death penalty in Illinois.

Don't forget, he is responsible for the death penalty compromise in Illinois that keeps the death penalty in effect in the state but requires that all confessions be taped to ensure that an innocent man or woman is not coerced into confessing to a murder that sends him or her to death row.
I think if Obama  is polling at 61% favorability with Jewish voters, than he doesn't have trouble with them. Jewish voters have seen the devastation that Bush's policies, and those warmongering politics of McCain, have and will bring to Israel. Israel AND the Middle East countries will do much better under an Obama administration than anything McCain can offer. Maybe McCain can fool the elderly Jewish voters but the younger generation clearly sees that the continuation of Bush politics has made Israel much less safe in the world, and those votes will go for Obama.
Steve, i agree with you ,its NOT the medias job to spread false rumors and accusations. Mccain will do fine doing that himself.
The gang murder bill was flawed, and you all know it. Please report the WHOLE story, not just the tidbit for ratings.
Margaret, in the case of the death penalty, thats a good thing he opposed it.Putting criminals to death, does NOTHING to solve the crime problem. Using the criminal to help curve crime could prove to be a better approach.
The repubs talking points are pathetic.

Although I feel for the lives lost to gang violence, this is not an election year that the average American is transfixed on issues of crime in the streets.

Being mugged by the one hose bandit at the pump, is the crime platform this year. That's a winner for the dems.
The GOP message has worn quite thin with voters from most states. This may be a landslide for Obama. Each time there is an open discussion about real policy, McCain is in trouble.
The fallacy of much of the news coverage is that because, say, Clinton did better than Obama with a certain group, that Obama is weak with that group. In the primary that's simply not always fact. By that same argument, John Edwards and Joe Biden don't do well with Democrats because Clinton and Obama did so much better in the primaries. Does anyone believe that?

First Read, your wording of the bill is unfair to Obama. He opposed the wording of the bill, he deemed it unconstitutional. So rather than vote Yea or Nay, he voted "present", as a voice of protest, in requesting that the bill be reworded so that it was more fairly implemented for all parties concerned.

Please correct yourself, or you will be losing a dedicated reader.
There are tons of anti-Jewish sentiment out there. Some try to use fear, ignorance and prejudice to sway votes.  But you just can't believe everything you read.  I'm Jewish and I've been supporting Barack Obama for years.  Every Jewish person I know is supporting Obama.  The choice is absolutely clear.  President Barack Hussein Obama will be for ALL the people.
I've worked in the legal profession for over 30 years in Illinois.  Presently, there is a stay on all executions in the state of Illinois because unfortunately, the criminal court system here was so corrupt.  Innocent people, mostly African-American males, were being quickly pushed through the criminal courts and received a rubber-stamped death penalty conviction.  This practice went on for years before our then-govenor and the Illinois Supreme Court did an indepth investigation of the common practice of Illinois courts "railroading" African-American males.  Because of DNA testing, many, many prisoners on death row were exonerated of crimes they did not commit.  The state of Illinois had to stay executions, as more than likely, many innocent people had already been executed.  Obama did not vote yes or no re: death penalty for gangbangers.  He voted "present."  Thank God he did NOT vote "yes."  Until the people of the state of Illinois are more trusting of our court system, there is a stay on any and all executions.
The press is increasingly self interested.

Perceived weakness with Jewish & Latino communities was versus Clinton not McCain.

I read one that mentioned Bush's success with latino's, but failed to mention he as Texas Gov had a huge advantage that McCain will not enjoy.

Where are the numbers to back up these articles?
Come on First Read - We need un-bias information.  Don't give bits of information to sway a story one way or another.  If you speak about legislation then you need to include the entire thing.  If not then give us the source so we can view it.  I love you guys and you do a great job.  But, sometimes you slip; we need fair reporting so we all can determine our own minds.

Thanks and keep up the great work
I wish Joe Lieberman would stop calling himself a Democrat.
Would love to hear more on the Lieberman topic.
- When are the democrats going to stop caucusing with him?
- What do the people in his district in CT. have to say about him today?
- Would they still vote for him knowing what he has become?
Let's see some on the ground reporting from his district...
lol how funny is this first read that wont let any anti Obama posts on now gets bit in butt. Obama used the blacks threw them under the bus with his grandmother, priest, pastor, churchand guess what your turn!! what people will do for you they will do to you.Obama has problem with jewish vote cause he cannt keep his story straight. One day tells group jewish voters Jerusalem stays togeather. Next day tells another group oh that should be ecided by both parties. His PLO friends lends a problem to him .Rahidi I believe that he gave money to,There are quite a few reasons to doubt. Young will ignore they havent been through the problems but not the older ones that vote and remember. Talk to Iran.
Lieberman is one of the most honest and respected Senators we have. No matter what party. Oh ya the dems turned there back on him too I forgot.Obama was a muslim, learned it and lied about it. Finally he has admitted bits and pieces. I believe it is a beautiful religion why denie it?It wasnt his choice but Barry decided to turn on it too for political reasons. He says though call to prayers on Friday sunset is most beautiful thing there is I agree prob. is but why demounce it?He doesnt give the people any credit for haveing understanding. Part of the Eliest thing I guess.to bad.
Do you think Floyd Brown realizes that it's 2008?  It sounds like he's a one trick pony - typical for the gop.  Can't argue on substance, just go for the jr. high rants.  Step off Mr. Brown.
FirstRead, why have you not fixed your omission error on this topic yet? It adds serious unnecessary bias against Obama.
