Obama blasts McCain on the economy

RALEIGH, NC -- In a speech kicking off his two-week economic tour through battleground states, Obama spent a considerable amount of time introducing many of his differences with McCain on economic policy that his campaign will emphasize between now and November.

VIDEO: Barack Obama takes aim at the Republican Party's economic policy.

In particular, Obama highlighted what he said was President Bush's "fiscally irresponsible" record and McCain's defense of those policies. "We were promised a fiscal conservative," Obama said of President Bush. "Instead, we got the most fiscally irresponsible administration in history. And now John McCain wants to give us another. Well, we've been there once, and we're not going back."

Obama also connected McCain to the president on the issue of health care, claiming that McCain's proposal would amount to "four more years of a health-care plan that only takes care of the healthy and the wealthy." And he hit McCain on being slow to release a plan to address the housing crisis.

"As late as December, John McCain told a newspaper in New Hampshire that he'd love to offer a solution to the housing crisis, but he just didn't have one," Obama said. "It took him three different tries to figure it out. And in the end, his plan does nothing to help 1.5 million homeowners who are facing foreclosure, even as he supported spending billions to bail out Wall Street... Sen. McCain wants to turn Bush's policy of 'too little, too late' into a policy of 'even less, even later.'"

While rolling out his own proposals, Obama boasted that he was a believer in a pay-as-you-go system, while McCain's plan is to pay for his tax cuts with decreases in wasteful spending. This, Obama said, "indicates that John McCain was right when he said that he doesn't understand the economy as well as he should."

Obama said that every proposal he's made in his campaign is paid for, including the additional $50 billion in economic stimulus money he called for today, the $10 billion Foreclosure Prevention Fund that would deal with at-risk homeowners, and the tax cuts for households making less than $150,000 per year.

According to his speech today, those tax cuts would provide "relief to 95% of workers and their families," an argument that the Obama campaign will surely push hard to defend against McCain's argument that Obama is a "tax and spend liberal."

In addition to these steps, Obama made less specific calls for college tuition relief, increased oversight of the credit card industry and bankruptcy reform saying, "We'll make sure that if you can demonstrate that you went bankrupt because of medical expenses, you can relieve that debt and get back on your feet."

The conclusion of today's speech was the same as the beginning: Obama represents a new approach to the economy and McCain does not. "We have tried it their way for eight long years," Obama said. "And it has failed. It is time to try something new. It is time for change."

McCain campaign fires back
In a conference call responding to Obama's speech, North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr criticized the presumptive Democratic nominee for voting to raise taxes 94 times since joining the Senate, for not describing in detail how he would pay for his stimulus proposals, and for devoting much of his speech to attacking McCain.

"I think the speech we heard today is what the American people are sick and tired of," Burr said, adding that McCain wants to reduce corporate and middle-class taxes and wants to make the tax system fairer.

Also on the call, McCain economic adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin said Obama was hypocritical in arguing in his speech that McCain's economic plan would include $1.2 billion in tax breaks for Exxon when Obama voted for an energy bill that was a boon to the oil industry. And he also blasted Obama for placing his veep selection process in the hands of a man -- ex Fannie Mae head Jim Johnson -- who benefited from preferential loans from subprime lender Countrywide.

Which senator has cast his vote the majority of the time with the political idealology that put our nation on its current heels?

We cant afford four more years under a GOP pres.

Now the picture is more clear? Clinton no longer a issue of insanity! So we are seeing now, two people with concern, yet pointing fingers and empty solutions. The battle fought to this point was no more than getting rid of the Clinton's. Finally , the issue of GAS! You see the war has taken back seat again! Gas  But they won't address who is driving the price! Hedge funds and your terrorist the Speculators! Being not a Washington self serving paper hanger Senator with all the wrong solutions, lends one to think! The average person ask our Senate ""which is less than fifth grade level thinking, What is a speculator? DAHHH, UGHHH, HMMM, Would you repeat the Question! Is it not a shame , the average working American Makes around eight to ten dollars a hour. Like do the math and your wages were cut in half within six months! No more than a hand full are bring America to its knees! And in sum , these two paper hangers want to be a """PRESIDENT"""?
WOW KJ - thanks for all that info!
So all McSame's camp could come up with is people are tired of hearing about it??? What!!  And they complain that Obama does not offer specifics!! That is a joke.

Obama - help deliver from the conservatives who are spending us into bankruptcy by saying they are fiscally responsible!! At least if we are going to be spending money, let's spend it sensibly!!

Help us Barack.  The middle class is dying!!

How is McSame going to offer health insurance to those who cannot afford it? He is not.  How is he going to help the victims of mortgage fraud who have now lost everything? He is not.  How is he going to help bring back jobs or tighten controls on imports? He is not.  He is not going to do anything because he is an ELITE, extremely wealthy man who is out of touch with the needs of the common man/woman.  He does not grasp the concept of needing to decide between food or medicine because you cannot afford both.  Bitter - sure, I am bitter.  Bitter because I am sick of being lied to by the republican spin machine.  I don't mind being called bitter at all.  Better bitter than stupid enough to fall for the republican spin cycle again.  Never again.  I have voted republican way too many times and always to find nothing.  Not this time - not this election (pulling from Obama speech).  The best properity this country has had in recent history was under Bill Clinton - which the republicans have squandered.  It has to stop.

We need a statesman.  Someone who cares more about the common good than scoring political points for his/her own side.  Enough already.  John McSame is so caught up pandering to different interest groups he is stiffled.  He is not sure what he is saying or even believes in any more because he can't remember which group he has promised what to. And it is showing. He is getting caught up in his own flip-flops.

Time for a change, NOW.

Obama 08/12
Tax cuts are liberal code for capitalism?  What does that mean?  Even some of the wealthiest people on earth such as Warren Buffet recognize the unfairness of middle and lower class taxpayers owing a larger proportion of income as taxes than they do.  Is it really confiscatory to believe that billionairs should pay as much of their income in taxes as do I?  To think otherwise is to believe that the cost of public services should be balanced on the backs of the middle class...also known as the Republican Plan.
Hey for all you people out there who keep saying and thinking Obama is just "pretty words and speeches" and is "inexperienced and young"--- read on...The man has a plan.  He has intelligent and credible people(including himself) working on the answers to all the problems we are facing!!  Go Obama---Barack the Vote!!
I was one of those that said if my canidate wasn't the nominee I would vote for McCain.....but then I started to think what I would get if the republicans were in the house another 4 years.  For me, it just wasn't worth it and I hope that each person would step back for a moment and think about it honestly.  Please compare the two policies see which would work for you.  Trust me it's worth it!! (this is a prime example)

VOTE with your head and not your heart!!!
Democrat in CA (Sent Monday, June 09, 2008 3:42 PM)

***************************************************

I am using my head not my heart which is why I am voting McCain to balance out a leftist Pelosi lead Congress.  I think about the country not about the party and I think our country would be in trouble under a socialist Executive and a Liberal Congress.
The Republicans like to tought that Obama( and all democrats) support a tax increase.  The truth is they are rolling back the tax break the upper middle, rich and corporatations received from Bush.  This is not an increase in tax's just a moving back to a more fiscal responsible status quo.  The tax break Obama is proposing is a middle to lower middle class tax break.  We can surely see that the Bush one did little or nothing for the econnomy but did excelerate business outsource to foreign lands, record corporate and individual profits to the upper class with no trickle down effect to the rest of us.  Add to this a war funded by China, in a region that caused instability in the oil futures that resulted in the price of oil to sky rocket( increase demand in India and China has added to the cost). Instead of sound leadership in 2002 by John McCain and Bush to argue for a tax to pay for the war and alternative fuel inititives we got instead tax breaks for the rich. The only people that suffered are our soliders and middle class and poor who paid for this fiasco.  Now McCain wants to continue this folly so we can declare victory.  Mr. McCain can you define victory? Is it like Nixon who wasted four plus years to end the Vietnam war that caused you and other veterans an unnecessary toll on lost lives for a deal we could of had in 1969-70? If it is it is a sacrifice that already is to great to pay for such a folly.
The only positive thing that the Bush Administration's fiscal policies have accomplished is that the international drug cartel is now targeting Europe rather than the USA.  Why? Because the American dollar is fast becoming worthless and the Euro will soon be the international currency for trade - including heroin!

And anyone who thinks our economic situation is not tied directly to the billions of dollars we are spending in Iraq and Afganistan knows less about economics than Sen. McCain!
