McCain: Obama means 2nd Carter term

Posted: Monday, June 09, 2008 6:08 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
In an interview to air later tonight on Nightly News, McCain tells NBC's Brian Williams that while Obama might criticize him for representing a third Bush term, Obama seems to be running for a second Carter term. Part of the transcript...

Williams: Is it going to be tough to run with an incumbent party for the White House, given this economic backdrop?

McCain: I-- I think it's-- it's tough. But I think the American didn't, people didn't get to know me yesterday. They know me. They know that I have fought for restraining spending, which Senator Obama has been a big part of, with earmarking (UNINTEL) projects.  They know that I have been a strong fiscal conservative, and they know I understand the challenges that they face.

They need a little break from-- from their gasoline taxes, and they -- and they know that -- we've got to get spending under control. And we've got to become independent of foreign oil. Sen. Obama says that I'm running for a Bush's third terms.  It seems to me he's running for Jimmy Carter's second. (LAUGHTER)

Even IF that were true, I've no doubt that the American people would MUCH rather have another Carter than another GW. I doubt many would HONESTLY ague otherwise.
Oh pleeease.  Weak attempt to balance out Bush's negatives.  McDork is going to get killed.
Okay,I agree with "jerry/corpus christi texas". You liberals are all about feel good and knee jerk reactions. Of course all the comments below are from a bunch of liberals, because MSNBC is a left wing news group and attracts weak minded people.  We will have to just wait 1 term for the Dems and you will see how they will wreck are lives and this country.
The intelligence level of the American electorate will be measured in this election. If the people believe that "Change" that is neither defined nor funded is the way we should go, then Senator Obama will win. But I think the majority of people understand that his promises will lead to higher taxes, which will lead to higher cost of goods and thus a weaker economey. And his thoughts on foreign policy will lead to a much more dangerous world where we are in the cross hairs with less capability to defend ourselves.

I surely trust a honorable war hero over an ultra liberal orator. And while I have no doubt that this great nation can survive Mr. Obama, I feel that we can thrive with Mr. McCain.
Obama's windfall tax was what Mc Cain was referring to.  Carter tried it in 1980.  It failed miserably.  It did not produce the almost $400 billion that was promised.  The result was oil companies moved overseas to pursue drilling outside of our country.  I see a lot of ignorant people spouting about how Obama is going to save our economy.  So far everything that he has proposed will do the opposite.  People, quit listening to idealistic BS and do your homework.  Obama is "playing" the masses because he knows that most americans are too lazy to do their homework.  Did you know that there is no such thing as these Big powerful Oil companies that Obama keeps warning against.  Only 1.5% of all major gas and oil companies stock is held by Management and CEOs of the companies. 98% of the stock is held by companies like Vanguard in retirement accounts.  That means that 98% of the stock is held by people like you and me that someday hope to be able to retire.  So who do you think Obama's Windfall tax is really going to hurt???
Liberals keep saying "we need to end the war in Iraq!", as if the other side, our enemies, would just quit if we  surrendered Iraq to them.

This is silly. That is like saying we need to "end the fight against bank robbers in Chicago" by "taking our police officers off the streets, we are losing too many!".

Silly Dems, we are fighting against an enemy that wants to destroy us and subjugate the survivors.  We can't unilaterally "choose to end the war" any more than we could have "chosen to stop fighting Hitler".

Surrender and pacifism in the face of aggression is suicide.
My first point is: all politicians have faults.  They are, after all, human.  Obama seems to be a decent man, and I'm sure he has the best of intentions... as does McCain, and the same can be said of Pres. Bush. (Hillary, on the other hand...)

:o)

But I think Obama is wrong about the issues (taxes, healthcare, war... the list is pretty long).

Sure, Bush has made mistakes, and so will any other person that occupies the White House.  No one will ever agree 100% with everything a candidate believes, or does (unless you yourself are the candidate).  I disagree with Bush and McCain on several topics.  I just vote for who I feel will make the fewest mistakes, and is more likely to leave me alone... that is by FAR John McCain.

In '96, I had a friend who said "I just don't think Bob Dole cares about me."  My response to her goes out to all of Obama's supporters: "Do you think Clinton [Obama] DOES?!?!  The less either of those schmucks knows about me, and the less they do to "help" me- the better off I am!"

<sigh>  If only Mel Brooks would run for President!!!  Now THAT would make it interesting!
I love how all you extreme liberals on here, all you bleeding hearts who want to pour out millions to help people in need all over the world....yet you could literally give a crap about the people in in Iraq. You would leave them all now to die if you could.

When we leave Iraq - there will be a slaughter to the likes of which you wont ever believe.  Could be in the 100,000's.  All the neighboring countries will seek to grasp power over the country's valuable natural resources (it's worth trillions) And what will you say then?  Shall we still stand aside and watch mass genocide, and the Iranians take control over oil which will then go to $3-400 per barrel (for those of you that dont know, that will translate to $10 per gallon at the pump)?    Plane fares will double, shipping costs will double, the cost of common goods like food and everything will double or triple - and the economy will be in the worst depression you have ever seen. Dont be naive.

Yet worse, if we want to help the middle east then  because our situation is so dire -- we will need a draft in order to have enough troops to do so.  This is the reality.

The difference between republicans and democrats is just this.  You are willing to take the risk I mentioned above.  Republicans are not.

Now I wont lie, George Bush led us into this mess.  But the mess is the reality. The question now is how can we best deal with it - together.

And lastly, if you dont know about Jimmy Carter, I would do some research before you unequivocably support Barack Obama's positions.  Because his ideas, unfortunately, are not new.  Sorry to break your heart.
He said she says It doesn't matter who wins, in four or eight years we will still have all the same problems we have now. Both parties have had opportunities to fix things and neither have done anything but position themselves to be reelected. We need to start holding our politicians and our own parties accountable for what they don't do. Every election cycle The Dem and GOP politicians get up and rile you up to vote for your party because the other party is so bad. We are so afraid of the alternative we don't question our own parties actions. It really doesn't matter because nothing will change and in 8 years you ll be arguing over the same problem.
By the way- I make an exception for Jimmy Carter... he was, is, and will always remain a complete and total moron.  (But I'm SURE he has the best of intentions)

:o)
Stop the Q-tip when you feel resistance.  No one cares, except Libs, that Obama is black.  He's very charming, but has NO susbstance.  His associations show poor judgements at least!  His ideas show a lack of basic understanding of the economy, he and most of you are completly wroung on the war.  We capture and kill far more teorists in Iraq then Affganistain.  Why is it that only we desirve freedom, dosent every one?  you want us out of iraq but in sudan what's the differance?
For those of you who complain that any Carter refernce is meaningless to the younger generation: you are showing that you know little about modern history. Pres. Carter cannot be held responsible for all that went wrong during his term, but he must take some responsibility for the poor choices he made in trying to address the problems we faced at the time. Iran overthrew the Shah, likely a good thing, but then replaced his dictorship with an equally (if not more so) repressive theocracy that clings to power to this day. Inflation and interest rates were very high, driving many employers out of busisness, leaving many jobless (there is a connection between successful business and good jobs): the arab nations,(except for Saudi Arabia) rallied to the Soviet Union in order to arm themselves with cheap, plentiful, and effective modern weapons (fortunately they never adopted the competencies required to use the weapons to their maximum effect, even to this day). President Carter imposed, with the help of a Democratic congress, a 55 mph speed limit everywhere in the US, as if a "one size fits all" forced solution was what was needed to conserve energy, rather than incentives to get our auto industry and consumers to embrace conservation. This resulted in the auto makers in Japan and Germany grabbing the economy car segment, and they have only expanded their market share since, even to the point of building vehicles here in the US (outside the high-labour cost area of Detroit). Finally, he had the US boycot the 1980 Moscow Olympics, a rather weak and feckless protest of the Soviet Union's massive invasion of Afghanistan. The only thing that comes to mind as a success during his presidency was the Camp David accords, that led to lasting peace between Egypt and Israel.
Sen. Obama should look more carefully at history that most of the posters here, otherwise he is likely to have only one term, noteworthy for being "the First African American president" and little else.
Wow, the lack of intelligence from the Obama crowd displayed on this thread is incredible.  The fact that most of you haven't a clue how bad Carter was as a President shows how superficial you are.  I suggest taking the time to do some research rather than show how ignorant your really are.  Geez - why can't there be an intelligence test for people wanting voting cards?
If you think gas prices is high now, wait till obama starts to tax gas. We all should know that the government cannot run anything efficiently. It's waste time when he handles the check book.
I saw a book titled "If democrats had brains they'd be republicans"....
I don't think McCain is the answer to all of our problems, but I think if it is a choice between him or Obama, it's McCain hands down.  Obama believes the way to lower our cost for fuel is to raise taxes on the oil companies. He doesn't seem to realize that companies don't pay taxes. They pass this cost on to you and I. The only way to lower the cost of gas is to get the government out of the way and let us produce our own. The less goverment is involved, the better off we all are. There has not been one thing the goverment has taken control of and made better. Not social security, schools, or any thing else. If you want to guarrantee higer costs, let the government run it. The sad thing today is, we don't have anyone running for office that represents the people of the United States. All of them support special interests on both sides of the fence. No one supports common sense. It's either the far left or the far right when most American's are somewhere in the middle. It doesn't matter that Obama is black or that McCain is old. All that matters is they are both politicians in a system that not longer works for the people. The founders of this nation would roll over in there graves if they could see it now.  We lose some of our freedoms everyday due to wire taps and other policies that no one seems to have a problem with until we all wake up one day and live in the Soviet States of America. Both parties are to blame. On is taking us to hell in a hand cart, the other on a jet plane.  Either way we are going to the same place.
Let's see:  Carter thought he could reason with Mullahs in Iran and caused the Iranian Hostage Crisis.  Barry O'Carter ll thinks he can reason with terrorists and thugs.  Will America be a hostage.

Carter thought taxes could bring prosperity.  Barry O'Carter ll proposes the same.  We had 15% interests rates...on house loans!!

Carter thought government was the answer.  Barry O'Carter ll thinks bigger government is a bigger answer.  Here comes health care that will cost billions and a bureaucracy more bloated than Social Security.

Carter thought Americans were the problem.  Barry O'Carter ll complains we're the problem and the rest of the world won't stand for it.  We had a misery index under Carter.

Carter never showed any optimism about our future.  Barry O'Carter ll will kill the economy with his vision.

Geez, I wonder where McCain came up with Carter Jr?
Hey, sure we don't want mccain; but then again a monkey could run the country better! oh, thats right, the Democratic party already has one running!!!!
Wow,
I am truly amazed at all the unemployed posters on here.  Go get a job and see what the real world deals with and not some fantasy you watch on mainstream media noon to 2am every day.  You are all living in denial if you think a socialist racist candidate in America can win against the old guy.
U.S. voters are not nearly as single-tracked as those here/elsewhere who continue to type "end the war now" and related.  The Left (since WWII) has ALWAYS used this "anti war" position to create doubt and withhold support for the U.S. in nearly all political elections.  Most voters don't "like war" but we understand why our military is necessary for certain conditions.  It appears that the only thing the Left today has as it's "outrcy" is "stop the war" and various denigrations about "war".  As one voter here, I'm glad we are contending with grotesque violence and security threats, as also our Allies.  I do question many Democrats' motives with all this naysaying about "war" because most Liberals are certainly not "peaceful" people.
And now a word from Ron Paul . . .
Reparations now!!  Payback for 400 years of slavery.  Barack '08
