Ron Paul's own convention

Posted: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 3:06 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
That thorn in the Republican establishment side is back.

Ron Paul's campaign is planning an event at a "large venue" with a "sizable" crowd Sept. 2 -- the Tuesday of convention week -- in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area a couple of miles from the convention site.

Paul spokesman Jesse Benton confirms this is certainly in the works but details are being worked out and not yet finalized. He wouldn't divulge the specific location because contracts have not yet been signed, though this report indicates Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota.

Paul hopes to fill the arena the day before the vice presidential nominee would speak. On that Thursday, McCain will officially be selected as the nominee.

The impetus for the mini convention of sorts was, in part, not getting a spot to speak at convention, but it "goes a lot deeper than just an invitation to speak," Benton said.

"We have said from the beginning that we are going to have a presence in St. Paul," Benton added. Paul "has said he’d be honored to have an invitation to speak. He's not holding his breath; he's not expecting one. ... No invitation was extended. We’re fine with that, so we’re going to go ahead and have our own event."

Paul's supporters are really "looking to build a national organization that is going to run at a grassroots level, be organized at a precinct level, and to identify candidates to support," Benton said, "real constitutionalist candidates."

Paul camp expects to have about 50 delegates to the national convention. They will attend the Paul convention and the campaign is encouraging them to go to the official GOP convention as "active and positive." But, Benton added, Paul's supporters are independent-minded and aren't going to be told what to do.

"They’re free individuals, and they can do what they like," Benton said. "We want to send a message to the Republican Party, a message to return to its limited government roots ... common sense foreign policy that is non interventionist, reject the Patriot Act and move back to respecting the Constitution and rule of law."

It doesn't mean Paul is ready to abandon the Republican Party, either. Benton insisted Paul will not be running as a third- (or fourth- or fifth-) party candidate. And even though Paul will not endorse McCain -- over disagreements on foreign policy and a host of other issues -- "there's respect there," Benton said. "We're not going to to say anything negative about McCain."

"There are a lot of good things Republican Party does," Benton added, "but the Republican Party is facing some tough reality at the polls." That's because of its foreign policy and its movement away from limited government, Benton said. Paul and his supporters "are ready to work for a party and be active long term for a party that embraces" those principles.

Paul's campaign likes the Constutionalist candidate and elements of Libertarian candidate Bob Barr's platform (but likely won't endorse anyone). And Paul's certainly not going to support Obama whose "foreign policy is not much different than Sen. McCain’s," Benton said.

Aside from Paul and his supporters, the campaign promises "real brand-name entertainers" at their event. Details are expected to be finalized on location (and entertainment) in the next few days.

WTF is this about???!!!
Poor Ron Paul ... does he really need attention this badly? Sounds a tad too narcissistic, methinks ...

OBAMA '08 & '12
I'm sure the news media will cover Ron Paul just like they did when they covered Hillary's speech last Saturday. And then there will be endless analysis of his speech, just like with Hillary!
Be careful of the evil you wish on others McCain.

You, and your ilk wanted discord for the dems, and discord has parked itsself on your own doorstep.
Ron Paul & John McClain.  Sounds like some stars in a horror movie!!

People...  Obama is the right choice is this struggling economy and wild times...

Bob Barr and Paul are trying to limit the power of the president not like American hero McCain who will win Iraqs war.  This is why they have stopped on conservative ways and might allow liberals to ruin the country.  Are we going to forget who attacked who or do something right.  Tax and spend zero or hero for president.
This doesn't make any sense.  Is this a concession rally, or a support rally to further his campaign???
This sounds like big trouble for McSame to me.

OBAMA, 2008!
With a far left wing nut and a right of center war lover, we need some more choices in Nov. Ron Paul, Bob Barr, Nader; hopefully more will be on the ballot.
Brand Name Entertainers?

Maybe Ross Perot and Ralph Nader are available.

;)

I think Paul may be the man the GOP should turn too.  He knows how to tell it like it is.  I bet the Retuglicans wish they had a longer primary season after listening to McCain after the last 3 months!

If a dollar fell in forest and Ron Paul was the only Republican to hear it, would it make a sound?
Ron Paul is wasting his time trying to break into the neoconderthal convention.  True libertarians should be supporting Obama, who has already pledged to overturn any executive orders or other presidential actions that he believes violate the Constitution ... i.e., individual rights.  That, and he promises to end the war in Iraq.

What more could a libertarian possibly want?

The more things change, the more they remain McSame

McCain is not a war hero:

McCain is a fraud.
If McCain can't do any better than he has so far, Ron Paul may yet be the repub nominee.

Paul hosting his own event upside the repub national convention is too funny.

While John was busy trying to exploit the pain felt by Hillary's people on Tuesday, Ron Paul was busy redirecting some McCain traffic.

Disgruntled repubs have been following Paul's orange sign suggesting a 'detour', for a while now.
I am for Obama - but I have to give it to Ron Paul that he makes some very good points. As I said, I would not vote for him but I do respect him.
Ron Paul is a GOOD MAN !

Sory, but he (and Nader) have the only HONEST FOREIGN POLICY of all the candidates

I support Obama, but Ron Paul has a BETTER Foreign than Obama

We need to END THE AMERICAN EMPIRE

We need to STOP THE WAR MACHINE

Don't be so quick to dismiss unpopular 'cranks' and their views

Obama/Biden '08
Obama/Edwards '08
Obama/Richardson '08
Good for Ron Paul...he and Barr represent what the repub's lost about their party...some of the better things about the republican party was: fiscal conservatism and standing strong by the original constitution. Neither of which McCain will bring. They both need to present their case loudly, whether the mainstream (and lost) republican party likes it or not...because it's the Repub party that's strayed from conservatism, not Ron Paul and not Bob Barr...

Add Ron Paul to McOld's list of problems. If Paul is on the ballot in two states, put them in the Obama category. This is another example how McOld and Bush are alike.  Don't talk to your enemies, don't negotiate with your rivals, create walls, be afraid.
It will cost McOld dearly.
Disgruntled repubs have been following Paul's orange sign suggesting a 'detour', for a while now.<<<<

True. All three of them.
Wow.  Ron Paul is planning to upstage the GOP convention.  Bob Barr is running for President as a libertarian.  The evangelicals are luke warm, at best, for McCain.  And the Democrats are divided against themselves?!?!
Maybe dusual tx should attend......this is going to be as close to a celebration as he'll ever see as Barack Obama will be the next POTUS.
there sure are alot of Obamatards and McCaintards on here!
Can someone explain why the Republicans won't Ron Paul speak at the convention? Didn't he run an honorable campaign and get a chunk of delegates and the popular vote?

Is the GOP so afraid of dissenting views that it's gonna force them to steal some of the spotlight across town?
Everyones seen McCain a real navy man in the film smoking aned only giving his serial number to the Viet Nam enemy after he bailed out of his jet.  People say he's a liar but he has served and suffered and is getting all of Hilreys women voters now.  Barr, Ron Paul and Obama the liberal were never prisoners and don't know how to win our war in Iraq.
We really do owe it to this fool to reform the eligibility requirements to run for President.

If we had a requirement in place to pass a mental clarity and in touch with reality assessment...neither Ron Paul, Ralph Nader nor McFossil would be eligible! Think of all of that money that could have been saved and applied toward War Veterans Medical Expenses.

What a joke this guy is!
Paul is off his rocker.
Only goes to show you that the Republican Party is not diverse enough. Ron Paul's should be allowed to speak at their convention. He has opposed the war in Iraq for the start. They say they have a big tent. I don't see it.
Another splinter in the Republican party? me thinks so.
Come on republicans and give Ron Paul a listen. He could be a better candidate than McCain. At least he remembers what he said.  Split those republican votes! It is time democrats start their own chaos up in here!!!! Ha!
Add Ron Paul to McOld's list of problems. If Paul is on the ballot in two states, put them in the Obama category.

-----

And what if Hillary decides to run as an Indie? What's your political calculus tell you then?
Ron Paul - John McCain - Bob Barr - OMG the GOP is in serious trouble.

But, the Country will soon be back on track and heading in the right direction.

The GOP will be a thing of the past.

Thank you GOD !!!!!

If Obamma was smart he would hold town meetings and invite Nader, Ron Paul, McCaine and the libertarian candidate. They wont gang up on him, they will absolutely kill Mccaine.
Uhhh...tell me again why age is not an issue?  Also - what consititues a hero?

John Kerry was a war hero - and was promptly swift boated.

Oh - I think I get it.  You have to be a rethuglican to be a hero, but you can't possibly love your country if you belong to any other party, or (heaven forbid!) you are independent.

Oh - and leave your snotty remarks about Michelle out of this.  This is turning into "I'm rubber and you're glue..." campaigning.
Go, Ron, Go!
Math Man - she will not and can't not for this election.

The GOP debacle is real, so do your research. SO, you don't sound so stupid.
To Math Man:

Hillary will not run as an independent or as Barack's V-P.  She will either stay in the Senate or Barack will make a cabinet post for Hillary to move through a Health plan.  Hillary (and Bill) will ultimately work to get Barack elected.  Why?? The Clinton legacy needs repair.

----------
how would a prisoner, who got himself caught, who graduated at the bottom of his academy, suppose to know how to win in Iraq? Assuming there's anything to actually win in Iraq. Answer - he doesn't.  He's a failed soilder who still thinks we can win in Vietnam if we only fought there differently and had more men.  Sound familiar?  He doesn't know what he's doing.

And BTW - learn grammar.
McCain will never let Ron Paul speak at the convention because Ron Paul doesn't fall in line with the other Iraq War lovers in the Republican party.

It's about time the Repubs have a little muddied waters of their own.  I look forward to watching the drama unfold.
Math Man,

Hillary will never run as an independent.  First of all, she's a Democrat through and through.

Secondly, she doesn't have any campaign monies.
Whoa! Everyone's more anti-Free Market, anti-Ron Paul now that Ron's more or less out of the race. What happened? Flattering, though. The hostility is appreciated. Scared that you might have to get a job for a living, get off the teet? Maybe the glistening little socialists coming out of college prefer freedom now instead? They're at least considering it, that's a start.
Ron Paul won every debate that I saw him in, hands down. It seems as if the GOP is VERY affraid of more people finding out about him.
Hillary is lurking about out there with the popular vote lead of the Democratic vote, and the Dims are calling the Republicans splintered. Too funny!
IF DEMOCRATS ACROSSTHE COUNTRY WERE TO EMAIL OR CALL THE GOP AND REPUBLICAN LEADERS IN THEIR STATES AND DEMAND THAT THEY GIVE PAUL A CHANCE TO SPEAK IT WOULD BE ALMOST LIKE THAT OPERATION CHAOS THING, BUT NO DEMACRAT I KNOW WOULD DO SUCH A THING.
Obama is a fake in a good suit
The irony of course is that all media has ignored Paul since day one. Now however, when it is apparent that he can be nothing more then a pain in McCain's neck the liberal side of the media starts to cover him, albeit online.
Obama supporters please don't put down Ron Paul or his supporters.  While I strongly disagree with him on many issues, I strongly agree with him on some of the issues he has fought for (repealing the Patriot Act, respect for the constitution).  If nothing else, he is somewhat consistent in his rhetoric and not a shill for big corporations.  He should probably be a member of the libertarian party rather than a Republican.
He is a true maverick in the GOP and deserves credit for his willingness to stand up for his ideals, even if it goes against the party line.
I would never vote for him, but I can certainly respect him for being such a staunch supporter of the Constitution and the freedoms that this country was founded on.
Dr. Ron Paul is the only candidate that I believe actually has a chance of improving this country.  McCain has proven himself to be a flip-flopping, say-anything, deny everything flake.  And Obama with his speech to AIPAC last week has proven to be "more of the same", in a new package.

Ron Paul has not gotten a fraction of the media coverage the other candidates have, but his message is getting out and he really is the only hope for this once great nation.

God Bless America
I think Ron Paul should initiate an independent run for the Presidency
What a shame, what the Republicans have done to Ron Paul and everyone who respects him
Me thinks that perhaps Ron Paul is the only candidate that has actually read the Constitution!
