Obama takes on credit industry, McCain

Posted: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 3:21 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
CHICAGO -- Obama held a roundtable Wednesday to discuss credit card debt and predatory lending, an event he had planned to hold in neighboring Iowa but which he was forced to cancel due to flooding in the region.

Obama also hit McCain for what he called a lack of proposals for helping people hit hard by the credit card debt.

“We were planning to do this in Iowa, and they have been devastated by flooding,” Obama told a small crowd gathered in a large room at the Illinois Institute of Technology. “There’s been flooding in Iowa and Wisconsin, Illinois and all across the Midwest, so we didn’t want to divert state resources from going to directly to flood relief.

“My heart goes out to the families that are struggling with having to flee their homes, leaving their businesses and communities behind. Many of them are wondering when they’re gonna be able to return, and whether they’re -- and what they’ll find when they get there.”

The Democratic nominee said he wanted to assure families affected by the flooding that their communities would be rebuilt.

“We’ll work to ensure that the full resources of the state and federal government are there to help,” he said, “and I’ll do everything in my power to see to it that those resources get to the people who need them as swiftly as possible.”

Obama said credit card companies had spent millions lobbying Congress and contributing to political campaigns so that the laws written would benefit them, arguing John McCain had been part of the problem.

"This has to stop. We cannot let the rules of the game continue to be rigged against ordinary Americans. We need a President who will look out for the interests of hardworking families, not just big campaign donors and corporate allies,” he said. “"That will be a real difference in this election, because when it comes to Washington letting credit card companies get away with this.

“John McCain has been part of the problem not part of the solution. When he had the chance to help families avoid falling into debt, John McCain sided with the credit card companies. When he had the chance to protect teenagers and college students from deceptive credit card practices, he sided with the credit card companies. And when I fought against the credit card industry’s bankruptcy bill that made it harder for working families to climb out of debt, he supported it -- and he even opposed exempting families who were only in bankruptcy because of medical expenses they couldn’t pay.”

Obama again hit McCain for his tax proposals. "He’s calling for nearly $2 trillion, $2 trillion in corporate tax cuts over the next decade, but he has not proposed a single measure to protect hardworking Americans from credit card companies that are trying to take advantage of them,” he said.

Obama went on to talk about his own proposals for a middle-class tax cut, for eliminating taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 and for a plan to help people deal with credit card companies before holding a roundtable discussion.

Phil Graham, who is McCain's adviser on the economy blocked legislation that would have helped with predatory lending.  He lobbies for UBS, which is neck-deep in the mortgage mess.

Phil Graham is STILL advising McCain.
Ouch. McCain is going to lose what's left of his hair.
I bet Chuck Todd feels like a big man right now for taking out Johnson!  I guess that makes you the Bob Woodward of the blogosphere......NOT!

I seen a little girl wearing a Obama shirt this morning on my way to work, randomly giving out "terrorist first jabs" at the bus stop.  Lets see if First Read can run a three day story about her and get her deported!

Meanwhile, John McCain can say that he "wishes America will burn in hell if Obama was elected President" and First Read would only post the story once at 2am in the morning with no follow-up!

Oh yeah, gas is too high for me to really pay down my credit debt so I'm with Obama on his issue!
McCain cares about the little people hurt by the credit crisis, as much as he does about his used depends...he p*sses on them and then throws them away.
Right On Barack!  Keep hammering that lobbyist lover on the economy where he's as clueless as can be.  As always "Lobbyist Lover" McCain is deep into big business's pocket as he needs their money to finance his decrepit campaign.

The repugnant ones are the BFF of white collar criminals and it's time to bring in someone like Barack Obama who will take on the corporate criminals and protect us regular Americans who are getting screwed everyday by these white collar criminals.

Go Obama 08/12!
McCain's head must be spinning...wondering how can he spin the failures of the Bush administration to look like progress...spin, spin, spin. Its the attack of the truth squad! You can't spin this McCain, the truth is this administration doesn't like poor people, or middle class people, or rural people, or military people, or young people, or....
Ironic when you read the story two down from this.
It's tough being the new kid on the block. Everyone's trying to find your dirty little secret. Obama's getting his a(hem) handed to him because everyone needs to find something to hate.

In the meantime, both McCain AND Hillary have a TON of skeletons in their closet, and Obama refuses to jump on them. To me, that shows class. Yes, he said something about McCain's "doesn't matter" comment, but that was in direct relation to the issues!

McCain slept around on his crippled wife, among other things. Would it be fair to bring that up?

Sometimes, these politicians remind me of the neighbors with the binoculars trying to find the local dish on everyone.
Wow, it is really great to finally see someone standing up for the American people, instead of trying to push them further down while the rich continue to get richer.

http://www.politivine.com
I've always thought that the first politician who took on the credit card companies and their unfair lending practices would be the politician who will be elected hands down.  When it takes 11 years to pay down a $2000 debt--that's just usury.  The American people are drowning; even fiscally responsible ones.
Go Obama!!!
Mccain's comment on the families affected by the floods; "it's not that important".  VP Cheny's comment: "So?"  Bush, as usual, had nothing to say.
Mccain has solutions...more tax cuts and more war...it worked so well for the bushleaguers...
Chuck - this is a big deal.  Not Johnson.  What Obama is talking about is at the core of what is hurting middle class Americans.  This matters.  What does McSame want to do - help the rich - just like his mentor, Bush.  We can't take this anymore.  Sure you and republicans can keep harping about Johnson; sure McSame can keep beating the drum that this shows Obama isn't using good judgement, blah, blah, blah - but the thing is, we all know that McSame has a campaign full of slimy lobbyist.  If he is so experienced and uses such good judgement, then why does he have these people in his campaign.

I as again - Where does he go to church?  What is something said by someone he has known at any time in his long life that was mean or racist or sexist?  Could these be found? Of course.  But what is the point?  How does that help us?

Please raise the level of the political dialog to important issues and get off the side shows.  Get off the rumors.  Get off the speculations.

We deserve better.  We deserve a good President this time around.  We deserve to know about issues not induendo.

Obama 08/12
Yep. McFossil needs to give at least 3 interviews or speeches a day between now and November.....that should guarantee an Obama victory. Let McFossil speak, then Obama can come back and twll everyone why the old goat just said won't work and here's how to fix it.....boo yaa! Start saying President Barack Obama!
Duel Personality  has been 95% part of the problem and not part of the solution.
Duel Personality McCain only gets what the best solution is for his cronies. He is granting concessions to his tons of lobbyists and war profiteers? This is outrageous, selfish, and hypocritical.
Not caring about innocents lives in Iraq, Katrina, and our soldiers, what caring relationship should; he care about infrastructure?
It is good to see First Read devoting some space to Obama's comments on issues that are truly of concern to average Americans.

This contrasts with all the media coverage of the non-story relating to Jim Johnson, and which resulted in his resigning from the committee to vett the possible VP choices.  What a foolish distraction that was.  I know it's difficult, big media folks, but try to keep the focus on issues of true importance in this presidential campaign.
Never mind my credit card debt......did you see the headline "Nation's Deficit pushed to All Time High with Stimulus Payments"?  I filed an extension, but ya'll can keep my pathetic check.....the NATION'S credit card is the one hurting us now----what if China and Japan called up the balance?????
McMothball better step up his game or it is going to get ugly!  I wonder if the GOP wish they had a longer primary season now that Tails from the Mc Crip as having a tough time!
What a fre@kin phony, taking advantage of the unfortunate events suffered by the people in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois and tying it to credit card issues is a new low blow.  I don't think constituents in those states are happy to hear that their situation had been 'used'. It just shows the true colors of Obama being so desperate in trying to garner votes.
Good.

The predatory credit card companies NEED to be an issue.

There is an element of personal responsability associated with credit card debt -- but most Banks / credit cards will just kick their customers while they are down and profit ridiculously off of misfortune - no matter what the reason. And these things take YEARS to clear up...even when the problem is Bank's fault. They need more regulation - some of their practices should be criminal.
Nobama, Jerry from TX, and Dusual TX,

Do you get it? These floods happened days ago, but McCain was on The Today show yesterday talking about his nightly wet dream, WAR!!!!!

The suffering of these Americans met the same reaction from McCain as the people in New Orleans.

Given how stormy TX can be, does'nt McCain's aloofness toward people hard hit by disaster give you pause?
McMothball better step up his game or it is going to get ugly!  I wonder if the GOP wish they had a longer primary season now that Tails from the Mc Crip as having a tough time!
Because there are few state regulations to cap interest rates for cash advance and pay day loan establishments, they can charge whatever APR they want to - 400%, 500%...  The folks that use these places to make it from one paycheck to another get in over their heads, fast.

They prey on the poor the worst.  Credit card companies are not much better, and with the economy the way it is right now, these places are going to be making out like bandits.

Ouch. McCain is going to lose what's left of his hair.

That's funny.
Great men come along once in a while... great leaders come once in a life time! How can anyone making less then 200k, wants the war to end and is a true american vote for McCGEEZER????????????

OBAMA4EVER
The government needs to help people who run up huge credit card debt.  Why should people take responsibility for their own actions when there's Democrats who can run to their rescue.
Picturing pea soup, and a combed over head, rotating backwards!!!
Barack's presidency will focus on everyday, ordinary Americans, making our lives easier and leveling the playing field all around.

Whoever doesn't see that, then you must be rolling in dough, trying to hold on to your tax breaks for the wealthy, capital gains tax breaks and other perks.

Or you just have a problem with the ethnicity of Barack.  I hope it doesn't keep you from voting for the best interest of yourself and your family.
It's refreshing to hear Obama's ideas on helping the average American as opposed to McCain/Bush's tax breaks for the wealthy.

Obama '08 &'12
Republicans will be staying home in droves on election day. The difference in intensity between the respective parties is astounding. Obama could well win at least 40 states and will surely get an electoral college romp.
Obama warned the GOP that he would not be their patsy in the GE! They foolishly took his kinder treatment of Hillary for weakness.

They all have underestimated Obama, much to their chagrin!

Talk about panndering..this is the same guy who when in the Senate voted with Dick Cheney and the Republican against a 30% cap on interest rates on credit cards.
Boboy from 3:39,
How is it that Senator Obama is trying to take advantage of the situation? He DIDN'T go to the event. Had he gone to the event, there were secret service and other security issues that needed to be handled. By not going, he didn't have to have any logistics concerns with the sheriff's office, police department, etc.  That makes sense to me.

But, I guess I'm too practical on the matter. Not partisan enough.  Oh well, some fools will after all, be foolish.
Once again McFool supporters have shown their hypocrisy.

Since they are jumping on Obama's arse for supposedly trying to garner votes, couldn't we say the same for McShame, and his "gas tax holiday" plan? Yeah. I'm sure there is NO political gimmick there.
Senator Obama is a breath of fresh air in a election cycle where the air is so very polluted the EPA has been forced to side with the Polar Bears.

He really does seem to understand basic American issues.
