McCain surrogates blast back at Obama

Posted: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 3:44 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Carrie Dann and NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- During an afternoon conference call, surrogates for McCain defended the Arizona senator against a chorus of criticism from Democrats, who jumped on McCain's comment this morning that an estimate of when troops may be withdrawn from Iraq is "not too important."

Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and John Thune (R-SD) said that the Democrats' furious circulation of the comment lacked both context and attention to the more important issue of responsible strategies for ending the war.

Lieberman complained of "reflexive attacks," saying that opponents are engaged in "another partisan attempt to distort John McCain's words."

Lieberman said McCain emphasized what was important -- to get Americans out of harm's way and come home with honor and victory. He also accused the Obama campaign of trying "to distract the American people from the fact that John McCain has been courageous and right about the surge in Iraq, and Barack Obama has been wrong."

Thune accused Democrats of "trying to blow this up as an issue because they don't want to talk about the success of the surge and the stability that's been delivered throughout Iraq."

The South Dakota Republican called the attacks a “head fake” and "a deliberate distortion that is trying to change the subject." He said Obama has "his feet stuck in the sand," not wanting to be held accountable for not having "the wisdom to recognize the success of the surge.”

"It's the difference between someone who has had experience and judgment and someone who clearly did not have that experience and judgment," Thune said. "That's why Obama and his campaign are working so hard to change the subject."

Thune added, "I think what people need to do is keep their eye on the ball, and that is success and victory in Iraq."

The campaign's representatives repeatedly drew attention to the entirety of the exchange between McCain and NBC's Matt Lauer this morning, arguing that the full context makes obvious that McCain said that it is his own "estimate" for troop withdrawal that is "not too important," and that he places tantamount importance upon the lives and welfare of American troops.

During the call, Lieberman also mentioned McCain's son serving in Iraq as an example (in addition to his own service) of McCain knowing how difficult it is for families with people serving in Iraq. At the end of the call, a reporter mentioned that McCain rarely talks about his son and asked if surrogates would be mentioning him more. Lieberman had already left the call for a meeting, and Senior Foreign Policy Advisor Randy Scheunemann said "the campaign is not going to comment on that."

Asked if McCain should be more wary of comments that could be parsed by the opposition, Lieberman defended his Senate colleague, saying that such fearful caution would go against McCain's very nature.

"The problem is if you start constructing your remarks to defend against people who will distort them, you’re not going to be the straight talker that John McCain naturally is," he said. "And I think he was straight talking here."

Okay, NONE of them defended McCain's position.  They are simply attacking Obama and his campaign for highlighting it.

Debate:  "Maverick McCain" vs. "Republican Nominee McCain".....which one is really running for President?

Also, will First Read post the interview McCain did in 1998 or 1999 when he went out of his way to praise Jimmy Carter?  Or did Magic Johnson volunteer for Obama and he got a good deal on his car insurance?
McCain's surrogates are speaking for John, because he's in a sweaty puddle, writhing on the floor mumbling nonsense, he's so out of control with rage at Obama!

The latest polls continue to favor Obama though there is no big bounce putting him on top. Full roundup of today's numbers, including a tight race in Michigan and a blowout in Washington: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/06/tuesday-polls-why-is-washington-polled.html
John McCain does not seem to have a grasp on the finer points of the Iraq war. For his "best" subject he makes a number of verbal gaffes. Can't wait until he speaks on the economy, his own professed lesser interest.

Is it age? Is it too much listening to lobbyists? Is it lack of interest? Is it arrogance? Is it lack of intelligence? Did he get elected as a war hero and then ride that image, never learning and growing?

Mistakes are one thing, even less than stellar people in your past, but at some point it's about the candidate's ability. Obama's readiness may still be a question mark to some people but knowing McCain's may be far worse.
Why did John McCain say the war will be won by 2013 and troops could start coming home then?  Isn't what he say important?  Isn't that a timetable?

First, Obama has been correct in his assessment of Iraq from the beginning and the more information that is made public - the more clear that fact becomes...

Second, if the surge is such a rousing success, then what is wrong with planning to bring our troops back soon? If it is working, then the Iraqis are standing up and putting their government together...or is it maybe working only to quell the violence, but not to enable the political progress as was promised by the Bush/McCain Republicans as a justification for the surge...
Is Lieberman whispering in McInsane's ear again, telling him what to say? Unbelievable! Should Caroline Kennedy leave also because her dad had numerous affairs? The Repubs are reaching for straws again. McInsane's whole campaign is filled with Lobbyists, too bad the Dems won't & don't want to stoop to this level.  Talk about reals issues instead of this garbage.

Obama for POTUS
Sorry Joe, we don't have to distort John's words, he does that, we just repeat them!  McCain is incompetent to manage this nation.  He has at least one serious gaffe a day.  He is good at throwing around toughman rhetoric.  Just wait, Johnny, we will see you in a debate.  Looking forward to it!

obama 08
LOL They got nothing.... LOL Is this the best the McCain camp can come up with???

Obama is running the show now and Mcc-Old-Man-Yells-at-cloud is playing a lot of D and no O !

Obama4Ever
Now, if only people on this site could stop for one second, listen to or read the whole exchange, and realize what McCain really said.  Silly me, I know that is expecting far too much of the Obamabots.
Oh yeah?  What about McCain latching on to Obama's bitter comment?  Was that not "another partisan attempt to distort" Barack Obama's words?

These Republicans are acting like this is 2004 politics - welcome to 2008 politics; welcome to Obama's party!
Old man McSame has no idea what he is talking about. He never does. He is a confused old man.
Oh give me a break!  I heard word for word what McCain said and it left me scratching my head saying what the hell.  He may have meant something different but he worded it so awkardly that it made no sense.

Can Liebermann kiss his butt any harder?
Lieberman is a disgrace.  Both of these fools must understand that the purpose of the surge was not to have a small downtick in violence or to be a convenient reason to continue pouring more of our blood and treasure into an Iraqi Civil War.  The downturn in violence is actually due more to Al-Sadr's call for a ceasefire.  I get sickened every time that someone says that we're 'winning' or 'success' without having a definition of either or a vision of an endgame.

John McCain made a boneheaded statement so now let him pay for it.  There is a pattern here and McCain said exactly what he believes.  McCain continues to display his utter lack of fitness for office every time he opens his mouth without any surrogates nearby.  Lieberman, Graham, et. al won't be there to bail him out every time.  This is not someone that we can trust to be President.
Joe Lieberman, is it true that either you or someone in your campaign "begged" Barack Obama to campaign for you when you were in trouble in Ct in 2006?

Did he not come to Ct. to support you?

And now you're angry at Senator Obama because in the general election, he supported Ned Lamont?

Don't you have an enemies list of your own because of your bitterness over the democrats who supported Lamont (the democrat) and not the independent (you).

I recall many a democrat campaigning extremely hard for you in the summer of 2006.

What happened to you?
Lieberman is such a lap dog.  Honestly!  The man is more republican than the nominee.

http://ilfamilypolitics.blogspot.com
Some people are confused about their gender, Lieberman is confused about which party he belongs to.  And in this case, he is just plain confused; the words he put into Mccain's moug\th to expand on what Mcwar DID say, were never actually spoken by John Dubya.
Lieberman complained of "reflexive attacks," saying that opponents are engaged in "another partisan attempt to distort John McCain's words."

You mean, like the way McCain is distorting Obama's words about 'guns & religion'?

Obama '08
Wow.  Here we go again.  The conservatives cannot get rabid enough about Obama's every move.  “He's a Muslim, a racist, he will destroy our economy with taxes and our country with gay marriage.  He will be bedfellows with Bin Laden.”  Conservatives might as well call him “Osama Obama” (reference to the Hussein thing so clearly grasped onto by many conservatives).  “Obama is a dangerous liberal.”  We’ve heard it all - except what these people haven't told us is that the people that THEY VOTE FOR have almost destroyed our country and left it in almost a state of perpetual bankruptcy.  They also have ZERO problems with how THEIR government handled Katrina, lied to us about the need for War, allowed the VP of the current administration to engage in war profiteering, and brought a new domestic product to our label of “MADE IN THE USA”: TORTURE.  How anybody can align themselves with and call themselves a Republican/Conservative is beyond me.  Those two terms will from here on be known as the NEW POLITICAL LEPROSY – just as it was with “Liberals”
The war was over with Mission Accomplished, we are now only an unwelcome occupying force in Iraq. Only fools consider this a "war".  The familys deserve to have their loved ones home and not off fight to steal Iraq's oil for Bush/Cheney's oil buddies.  There is no honor here.

It's time to come together as Democrats for our country.  Bush/Cheney have created a fascist state with corporations running our government.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Hey Guys ,

Liberman is a looser and Thune poltical clone of thrt right. The public at the center of the poltical specturm can see through the poltical fog that the GOP is attempting to cloud the facts with...we won the war many months ago in Iraq--we are now into nation-building and resources grabbing...They want us OUT,NOW! Leave and use powerful diplomacy to and partners to get the matters stright.
Boot Liberman off of the majority committee positions.

This backstabber has no business taking advantage of Democrats.

As for McCain, the moment he said that it "wasn't important" I was stunned with the stupidity and insensitivity of his comments.. this was long before the Democrats corrdinated and well-justified attack on him.
Surge is defined as a sudden rush or burst...

How long is this "surge" supposed to last, especially since it is SO successful?  Why are we using tax dollars to pay Iraqis NOT to fight each other every month?

McSame and LIEberman are both old, wrinkled sacks of BS!
Lieberman said McCain emphasized what was important -- to get Americans out of harm's way and come home with honor and victory. He also accused the Obama campaign of trying "to distract the American people from the fact that John McCain has been courageous and right about the surge in Iraq, and Barack Obama has been wrong."

- Interesting and misleading partial truth from the former Democrat turned Republican supporter who hasn't been outside the green zone and refers to all of Iraq through the lens of the green zone.
- Iraq is much larger than the green zone Senator Liebermann.
Lieberman climb under a rock and become a republican.

OBAMA/CLINTON vs MR MAGOO/ELMER FUDD (Lieberman)
Speaking for myself, the lack or foresight that the McCain campaign is attributing to Barack Obama for "not recognizing the success of the surge" pales in comparison to John McCain's lack of foresight for believing the war was a good idea in the first place.

I'll take my chances with BO than a war-mongering geriatric, any day.

And of course McCain and Lieberman wouldn't dream of using partisan attempts to distort Obama's words!!
Thune added, "I think what people need to do is keep their eye on the ball, and that is success and victory in Iraq."

We are keeping our eye on McMothball we are not going to have 7 more years of the McBush factory and his extended Crime Family McGreed!
What this shows is that the Dems are drawing blood.  I can't wait for November.
My impression of McCain is that he is anything but a straight talker. I hear him say "I hate war" but I see him smile at and hug the guy who took us into two wars. I hear him say "we've been in Japan and Germany for decades, why not Itaq?" But I see the flag outside my office lowered everytime a soldier from Maine in Iraq is killed and I don't see the point to that sacrifice. My ears hear one thing, my eyes tell me another, when I see and hear Obama I understand he will bring CHANGE. At this point, that's progress, to me.
Straight talk my foot!!!

The whole point of the surge was to stabilize the country so that the Iraqi govt could possibly come together and build the infrastructure of the country to a point where it could stand on it's own.  While some of the violence has quelled there has been absolutely no progress from the Iraqi govt.....which means that the surge did not meet its objective.  In english we call that a failure.  And no it is not a failure of our brave fighting men and women, it is a failure of the republican administration to match our military's fighting spirit with a surge of diplomacy that possibly could'VE helped, the clearly struggling Iraqi govt. The current administration is a bunch of bums and they should all be thrown out!!! McSame should be thrown out right along with....and I hope he takes Lieberman too!
Laughable responses, at best - weak defense of the indefensible, at worst.

Obama '08
Obama and McCain need to start those joint town hall meetings soon.

Hopefully when the two men are on stage next to one another that will lessen the spin and provide more substance.
Please - John McCain obviously does not know of the hardship caused on families and small communities when their National Guard Units have been on second and third deployments for up to a year or more at a time.  "That not important" may not be for McCain but it is for Americans.
Traitor Joe should just permanently attach himself to McBush so he can whisper talking points to the empty suit that is John McCain.  As for Thune, all of us in South Dakota know he just does whatever GW tells him to that he lost all credibility a long time ago.
Everyone can thank CT for letting the fraud, Lieberman, stay in the Senate.  I understand that he does what he believes is right, but when the people who he's suppose to speak for, including the dummies that put him back into that office, want closure on Iraq... he should, as a public servant, honor those calls!!!

McCain isn't only confused, he's senile.  Can America afford, literally, another president of "Dubyah's" character?  How about a president who, after being tortured himself, wants to torture others?  How about someone who can't even remember what the difference between a beer and a bill is?

-A concerned Iraq/Afghan vet who DOES think bringing the troops home IS important.
This is not a war, it is an occupation.  There is no honor or victory to be had in Iraq.  Staying there now is only about PRIDE.

Where I live, I see every day the toll that the quest for "honor and victory" has taken on our country.  At Wal-Mart, at the grocery store, at school, at church -I see soldiers, some without limbs, in wheelchairs, on crutches - who are trying valiantly to transition back to a life with their family.  This doesn't even address the thousands more around here who have deep psychic wounds.  I see young soldiers walking on the side of the highway near my house with heavy packs on their backs, building up their strength and endurance to carry their gear in the desert.

I fully support our troops and so appreciate their service, but it is heartbreaking to see the effects of Iraq on them, day in and day out.

The honorable thing for us to do now would be to LEAVE.

Obama '08
I say Democrats had every right to jump on McFool for his comment. America is in the middle of a useless war that it shouldn't have ever been in to begin with. We have innocent civilians in Iraq who are being killed every single day, because of the moronic choices of our idiotic current president. It's time to withdraw our troops, and end this useless bloodshed.

Keep at it Democrats. Give the Republicans a reason why they should be afraid.
If the Republicans are back to talking about "victory" as Thune asserted, then the media should expect the Republicans to define what victory is.
Oh and by the way,  McShame has absolutely no idea what things are like for the working men and women serving in our armed forces.  He has been a child of privilege his entire life and never had to worry about the bank foreclosing on his home while he was away fighting for the U.S.  He couldn't possibly feel their pain or understand what they go through to support this country.

He feels their pain (hah)  The man is a sham.

Obama/Warner 08
Straight off a cliff, Joe meant.
Obama loves to pick words and deceive people by semantics... Pitiful and amateurish... he needs a couple more years to wise up and gather REAL experience before setting his ambitions to be president. Democrats stop embarassing yourselves...
In typical Republican fashion the cry has gone out to 'circle the wagons".
I find it interesting when trapped by his own misstatements Sen. McCain has to have several others (also interestingly younger others) interpret what he meant by what he said.
Is the man unable to defend his own comments????
Has he lost the reasoning ability of explaining himself??
Sen. Obama is quick to clarify any statement he makes for those who did not understand either what he said or what he meant.
What I have seen of Sen McCain with regard to his intellegence, reasoning, or reading skills really scares me.
While I agree with many posts here thast age shouldn't be a factor, mental ability should be.
I think the mans cheese is a little unstable on his cracker.
The only distortions that should be mentioned are the ones that got us in there in the first place. BTW, the only reason that the surge lowered the amount of violence is because of Al-Sadar's cease-fire. Our troops won the war 4 years ago. Let's bring 'em home!
Each Republican surrogate has his own spin.  I think the comment this morning is problematic and I think they know it deep in their hearts.  But this is classic McCain... say something and then say that it meant something else.

I vaguely remember that when Obama made the remarks during the primary about people clinging to religion, guns, etc. these same people were too happy to jump the isolated statement and did not try to defend him, knowing very well what he was attempting to say in an inartful way.  They completely took that statement out of context, but now it's the Democrats that are taking McCain's statement out of context.  Give me a break...

I see, for the next 5 to 6 months, we will be honored with this titt for tatt nonesense.  Obama has solutions. McCain has his temper. Obama has policy positions Americans like. McCain is running for Bush's third term.
Lieberman is a joke and like McCain LOVES WAR!
I am so glad to see Lieberman committing political suicide by deciding to be McCain's blindly faithful little lap dog. I can only hope that his political career is squashed in November alongside McCain. He insults all Americans by claiming he is an independent.
So McCain has lost the ability to defendand speak for himself now, is that it? Surrogates pleeeezzz give me a freaking break!
When will people wake up and realize that the repubs want a continual war, it's the only way their "friends" can make money.

Remember Dwight Eisenhower's farewell to the nation addressing the military industrial complex?

Why is it EVERY repub president runs up huge deficits and most dem presidents have a balanced budget?

ALSO, wake up people, the repubs idea to continually say that dems will raise taxes is an OLD ploy! Every election cycle they roll out that old tired BS!

The only people who get taxes raised are the people who can afford it and don't care about gas prices.

BTW, we as a couple make more than 200K and feel it is obscene that we don't pay a little more.

If the repubs have their way, the only "class" left besides themselves will be the illegal immigrants that do all their servant work.

And all you so called dems who say you will vote for McSenile are not true dems. To the women who say they will vote repub, yea right put the screws to your sisters who want the CHOICE about their bodies. McSenile will have the supreme court so full of Alito's that the regular person will have no rights in a very short time.
