Johnson contradicted Obama's rhetoric

Posted: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 3:55 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Lisa Myers
Earlier today, the Obama campaign announced that Jim Johnson was stepping down from the candidate's vice presidential selection committee.

In choosing Johnson, Obama ran squarely into his own rhetoric, given that the Illinois Democrat has criticized lavish pay packages given CEOs.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd discusses the resignation of Obama vice presidential vetter Jim Johnson.

"When you've got CEOs making more in 10 minutes than ordinary people are making in an entire year, something is wrong, something has to change," Obama has said.

You see, Johnson -- once dubbed "Mr. Generosity" -- was a symbol of that culture because of the large pay packages he bestowed on CEOs as head of corporate compensation committees.

Examples: $1.4 billion in stock options for the CEO of United Health and $232 million in compensation over 3 years to the CEO of KB Homes. Both men later had to give some of the money back.

In 2006, a top labor official had called for Johnson's "resignation," charging that his record was "replete with compensation abuses."

Obama, in fact, had specifically criticized a bonus granted earlier this year -- and approved by Johnson. "The homebuilding company KB Homes, they lost nearly one billion dollars last year," Obama said in Indianapolis in April. "But their CEO walked away with 6 million dollars in cash bonuses on top of his $1 million base salary."

Johnson, who parlayed an impressive political pedigree into great wealth, also benefited from accounting manipulations while CEO of Fannie Mae, though was never accused of wrongdoing. And the Wall Street Journal reports he may have received preferential rates on mortgages from Countrywide, though Johnson's lawyer disputes.

On Tuesday morning, Obama dismissed the criticism. "Everybody, you know, who is anybody who is tangentially related to our campaign, I think, is going to have a whole host of relationships. I would have to hire the vetter to vet the vetters."

Tuesday night, the campaign provided a statement to NBC News, saying: "Jim Johnson has volunteered his time to perform a specific task for the campaign, one he has performed many times for many candidates before, that has nothing to do with advising the campaign in the development of policy."

By Wednesday, Johnson was gone.

Good riddance Mr. Johnson. Eric Holder isn't squeaky clean either, Obama now needs to rid himself of Mr. Holder. Hey dude start a new team with Caroline Kennedy. Get rid of the distractions please.
So what about Black on McMothballs campaign?

MSNBC: do your hit job on both campaigns!
HE SHOULD HAVE STAYED -- FORGET THE REPUBLICANS!

MCCAN'T STILL HAS LOBBYISTS ON HIS CAMPAIGN!!!!
The President of Iraq KISSED the President of Iran yesterday.

Being that McCain wants to win the war in Iraq and nuke Iran....isn't this bigger news than JOHNSON?

Since you won't do your job First Read, I'll hijack REAL news from other sites and bring it to you!
Welcome to the Real World Mr. Obama...now what was that you said about Change???
Lisa,

Where have you been? Catch up. We're past this.

At this rate, Obama will have to seat his Cabinet fresh out of the universities! (Like Costner, and Connery had to recruit their team from the police academy in 'The Untouchables')!

now we wait for Gramm to quit the McCain campaign.
Just pick a crook and live with it, Congress has plenty to choose from! So whats the big row? It doesn't matter, because Congress is derailed and nothing going to get done. So big deal! One concession, If you pick a crook or a Congress person, then you know already what you have. So big deal. There are no clean hands in Washington, on self serving paper hangers!
It must be a tough call to make at times, when your cmapaign could really
benefit from the expertise of some of these people.
I personally don't see why he couldn't stay on because there was no conflict of interest.  He was doing a specific job for the Obama campaign, one that had absolutely nothing to do with whether or not Obama believes in the obscene CEO pay packages
{sigh}

I am SO tired of all of this.  It feels like I am watching a tennis match.  Ugh.  Bing! Bing! Bing! Fault!

Now should we have a vetter to vet the vetters to vet the vetters who are vetting VP candidates?

This guy was not nearly as slimey as McCain's lobbyists - especially the one Keith talked about last night!  Ick!

Of course, you would expect the rich rethugs to stick together, right?  And we, the voting public, just put up with it.  Insane.

Still, I am glad that Obama is standing behind what he said before.  Just disappointed that it had to happen at all.

Let the Obama bashing begin in 3...2...
The more time goes by the more we find out how OBAMA really works. Cant Wait to vote republican for the first time ever.

Democrats for McCain, lets go Clinton supports send the message.
My MY - YET another Questionable Associate of obama!
How many more "friends" does this guy have??????
Obama is a FRAUD and will never be elected - he is not qualified to lead our country due to his RADICAL and very questionable assoicates.
This will be a fairly innocent learning experience for Barack.  He's quick to accept what could be improved, and I am sure that his future choices will be more closely looked at at a deeper level ... no matter how incidental their assigned task may appear or who may have recommended them for the assignment.

Johnson wasn't being paid... he was conducting background checks on potential VP candidates... that's far different than having a lobbyist in your hip pocket telling you to push whats good for their very own agenda.

Why not focus on McCain's team MSNBC... starting to show "McCrumb Cake" the usual free pass.
Left hand does not know what right hand is doing, vice versa... talk about team work.
First Read:

How about you show some balancing in your reports, and vett McCain's chief vetter too, Arthur B. Culvahouse, Jr..

Not only was this guy also part of Fannie Mae, but as reported yesterday by Kieth Olbermann, he has been a part of numerous lobbying firms over the past 6 years, and only stopped lobbying immediately before McCain's "no lobbying" policy went into effect.

I smell a really big biased rat, and if you aren't reporting it, then shame on you.
What r u trying to prove First Read Murray??

Just what is the point of this article?  Why are u guys making this more of a story than it IS???

It is no big deal!!  The dems simply assuring that the Republicans have NO OUT when it come to answering for their policies and the status of the country!  PERSONAL VETTING OF THE VETER IS NOT IMPORTANT!!
That is what the republicans want to muddy the issue waters with so that they don't have to discuss the issues!!

Stop giving them a platform to sink our country!!!

Come on First Read!!
Chuck & company - Again I ask, when will see the three straight days of coverage on the corrupt pasts of both Charlie Black and Phil Graham (who are both PAID staffers for McCain)?  I am appalled at the bias displayed by all MSM on this Jim Johnson non-story.
If a company is performing well, the stockholders and the board of directors agree to it, an invidual has made decisions that have benefited both the customers and the share holders, then pay them!

Some of it is excess, but as long as the books weren't cooked, do we really want the government telling non-public organizations how much they can pay people?  JMO
Now can we work on serious issues?

Obama: The Real Pro-Life Candidate

It would be in your best interest to read the whole article (it's short), but the bottom line is that in states (and countries) that are pro-choice and actively educate and promote birth control have the least number of abortions.  After all isn't that the goal to reduce the numbers as much as possible?

It's time to come together as Democrats for our country.  Bush/Cheney have created a fascist state with corporations running our government.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
WOW, so this is what "CHANGE" politics looks like?  HMMMM, seems like "same old same" to me!  We are so much better off with Obama as our nominee!! (note sarcasm)
How's Phil Graham? Yeah, I thought so.
Well since Jim Johnson has resigned, I think that Phil Gramm should resign.  I mean lets face it Phil Gramm was directly involved in LOBBYING on behalf of predatory lenders and legislation.  Now lets compare the two men..

Phil Gramm = McCain Campaign Economic Adviser (on payroll); LOBBYIST (recently taken off list this year and still on payroll); works for UBS.. EXTREMELY contradictory to McCain's them of being a reformer and helping the American people..with a man that is responsible  for all the downsides of our mortgage crisis

Jim Johnson = VOLUNTEER (NOT on payroll and NOT an adviser); only received checks, beneficiary of a timely situation; NOT an OBAMA campaign adviser; NOT on the payroll..

Talk about a frickin double standard.. No stories about Phil Gramm in light of the Jim Johnson infatuation.. Hell I think members of the media are paid lobbyist for the political parties and you can always tell which networks and media members are for which candidate..

Are there no honorable people left?  Is self-interest the only guiding principle these days?  I'm afraid that may be true.
Yeay!  Didn't take for Mr. Smug to make his first acknowledged stupid appointmentto be followed by many more.  MSNBC is largely responsible for my family's absolute hatred for Obama, the cocky freshman with the thin resume, and the absolutely v ile, disrespectful, ungrammatical blogger/surrogates.  We are divided in our desire to write in Hillary, vote McCain, or stay home.  Keith, Chris, Mika, Chuckie will be amazed how resolute we are.  Hillary cannot deliver our votes;  they are our to do with as we choose.  We may love her but  racist, stupid, old, female, poor as you claim we are, nonetheless our votes are ultimately ours!
While hardworking families are hurting and employers are vulnerable, Barack Obama has promised higher income taxes, Social Security taxes, capital gains taxes, dividend taxes, and tax hikes on job creating businesses… Barack Obama doesn't understand the American economy and that's change we just can't afford.
Barack Hussein Obama is a leftist liberal product of corrupt Chicago politics who hypocritically preaches all kinds of platitudes for others but in his public life has failed to demonstrate with his own actions. What happened to his "Old Uncle" Rev. Wright? Dumped!  His church of 20 years? Dumped!

A real steady guy. He will do and say whatever it takes to get the prize. The history of his political rise in Chicago is ugly. His record in the Illinois legislature and later in the US Senate contains absolutely nothing but a record of doing what is politically expedient. Look up his countless "Present" votes.

Obama is a product of Old Line Politics. Change America Into what? Judge a man by his actions not his words.
Is there any way we could have a few more stories on this topic?  This is probably the most important issue of the entire presidential campaign, so please, keep the Jim Johnson stories coming.

Most Important Issues of This Election Season
1. Jim Johnson
2. Jim Johnson
3. Jim Johnson
4. Iraq
5. Economy

Thank you.
Just another example of Obama telling you what you want to hear and then doing whatever he wants to do, whether it's what he said or not.  You aren't important or smart enough to know what's good for you anyway, so Barack has to make those decisions.
mad in Madtown (Sent Wednesday, June 11, 2008 2:24 PM)

I am just catching up on previous posts and I just wanted to say that I am SO sorry about your cousin.

I feel such sadness everytime I hear of another death over there.  Hey McSame!  How many more loved ones have to come home this way for you to GET A CLUE!

Why is McCain getting a pass? I saw Countdown talk about his VP vetter being worse than Obamas. But nothing else was said anywhere. Is this how it's going to be? McCain is teflon, while competent people are cast aside?

Wonder why blame the media is becoming trendy?

What's the point for this?!? This is overkill. The man is not running for president. Are you guys just digging for something to even up the issues between Obama and McSame?  I doubt it - obviously.
I am glad that he resigned. There is a positive change in the air.
Hey Mainstream Media...I would like this story to do the same vanishing act that John McCain's NYT story did with the press in 24 hours.  It is done...let's move on...
What about McCain's LOBBYISTS who are paid consultants in his campaign ? Can we expect the same press coverage on them. Guess not.  I guess the "wrong way express" has the press so in love with his " independent streak" we should overlook his contradictions.
Who cares...Johnson was apart of a team of three...

Thats only a 4th of the voting process for Dem VP, because B-Obama has the final and most important say.

DO you really think voters are more concerned about how the people who helps select the VP over the actually person selected for VP?

More importantly, I dont see any Rep VP search team put together...instead, MCBUSH sponsors a Bar-B-Que...when is he going to take the VP search seriousl.
OK now I'm starting to agree with the others that you are really pushing this non-issue way too hard.

Are you trying to prove that you are not biased?

Well, guess what, you are. That's why I love you. I already put up with enduring Pat Robertson's "opinions" in the name of balanced reporting but let's not let McCain be ignored with his history of lobbyist dealings.
You are the left's answer to that idiot Rupert Murdoch and don't forget it. We are your base. You do like it when Kieth Olberman has better ratings than O'Rielly right?

GASOLINE IS NOW $4.05 A GALLON, PER AAA. DOES ANYONE CARE?

The cost of oil and gasoline is destroying our economy. The Dow Jones stock market index is down (minus) 200 points today. The Energy Department says to expect gas to remain at four dollars a gallon for 2009.

WHAT IS OUR GOVERNMENT DOING ABOUT THIS? APPARENTLY NOTHING EXCEPT REPORTING THE BAD NEWSTO US. BOTH DEMOCRATS & REPUBLICANS HAVE BEEN BICKERING ABOUT MONDANE ISSUES WHILE THIS ENERGY CRISIS WAS DEVELOPING.

Our Congress and President has either been ‘asleep at the switch’ or ‘afraid to tell us’ the economic doom that was coming. These outrageous energy costs on top of the mortgage crisis will be absolutely devastating to the lower-middle class and working-poor families.
MANY WILL LOSE EVERYTHING — JOBS & HOMES & HEALTHCARE.

TAXPAYERS WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO FUND ANY ADDITIONAL “HEALTHCARE” PROGRAMS.

DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT OUR COLLAPSING ECONOMY?
——————————————————————————————————————
D- to MSNBC.

How is this relevant to the war, the economy or the environment?  Yellow journalism type of entry.
JUST ANOTHER BONE HEADED MOVE???? or did you not hear him say those things??
The Republicans and John McCain have nerve to criticize Barack Obama on this one.  John McCain still has not vetted himself of all of the lobbyists associated with his campaign -- he is dirty, dirty, dirty and time will prove it.  One cannot be that close to lobbyists without it being a problem.
Lets see Hmmm First there was no problem with Johnson. Like at first no problem with Trinity. Like at first there was no problem with Wright. Then..... Uh Oh ....Move Over Grandma cause Barry's throwin some more people under the bus. Heee... Heeee.
