Obama v. McCain on middle class

Posted: Thursday, June 12, 2008 11:17 AM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Today’s Obama conference call hit on McCain: McCain would not help the middle class; Obama would.

Obama surrogates Sen. Claire McCaskill (MO) and New Hampshire congressman Paul Hodes said Obama’s middle-class tax cut would be three times larger than what McCain is proposing and that a quarter of the tax cuts McCain is proposing are for those making about $3 million a year.

VIDEO: New York Times columnist Bob Herbert discusses the lack of mobility, and the overall struggle of the average, middle-class American, in the current economy. He also offers suggestions for John McCain's campaign.

McCain is “more of the same on steroids,” McCaskill said, adding, “The sooner the American public gets to the facts; they’ll realize finally they’ll have a champion” in Sen. Obama. She added that McCain's plan would help those at the very top of the economic ladder, the "thinnest sliver" of people.

McCaskill called Obama middle-class tax cut “massive” and stressed that those making “under $150,000 a year would see no tax increase of any kind” -- not payroll tax, not capital gains, “not a single tax,” Hodes said.

“I want to clear up any misconception that Sen. Obama is proposing an across-the-board capital gains tax,” Hodes said, adding that only those making $250,000 or more a year would see a capital gains tax increase. Hodes said for families making up to $100,000, they could expect to see a $1,300 decrease in their taxes.

McCain, who holds a town hall in Nashua, N.H., today, “will be talking about the continuation of failed policies under Bush,” Hodes said. He added that McCain’s tax plan amounts to nothing more than “rewarding the wealthy.”

“Obama represents a fundamental change,” Hodes said, “from rewarding the wealthy to helping the middle class.”

He added that “McCain offers eight years of failed policies” and said there’s a “desperate need for shift in tax policies.” He cited that the child poverty rate in New Hampshire -- one of those toss-up states -- increased by 47% between 2000 and 2006. He said that was the second-highest increase in the nation.

“It means working families in New Hampshire are slipping farther and farther behind,” Hodes said. “Barack Obama understands the fundamental change starts with helping the middle class.”

*** UPDATE *** NBC/NJ's Athena Jones adds that Hodes and McCaskill pointed to a study by the Tax Policy Center that shows Obama tax plan would provide three times more tax relief for the middle class than McCain's plan and argued that Obama is the candidate who "gets" the challenges middle class families are facing at a time when the economy is "shaky at its foundation."

The call and the focus of the town hall Obama will hold today in Wisconsin are meant to show his that campaign plans to take on McCain and the Republicans on the issue of taxes and tax relief, an area the GOP has often dominated in the past, frequently painting Democrats as "tax and spend liberals", often with success.

How anyone can not look at McCain and see the exact same failed policies as George W. Bush, I'll never know.

Of course, McCain's position may change later today depending on where or who he is speaking to.

Yeah, you go Obama and co., yes, I knew you were listening to me ::wink::, shore up the middle class!

And continue to stay on the economy, that'll make McCain quiver!

(sorry for all my typos below people, horrendous typing by me, lots of loaded issues)
There is no way this country can continue on a path of "Don't tax, but keep right on spending".  Do these people not understand what makes a balance sheet balanced?  I could not run my home this way!

I'd rather have a "tax and spend liberal" than a "borrow and spend conservative!"
The only way tax cuts for the middle class will work is to close loopholes for corporations and cut down expenditures in Iraq.  That is a deal-breaker, from a suburban woman's point of view.

If John McCain thinks we can afford to keep troops in Iraq indefinitely while he cuts taxes on corporations, he's got another think coming.

His Brain is Old. He can't put two and two together anymore, but still has an explosive temper

Yet he want his finger on the nuclear button?

I
Don't
Think
so.

A vote for McCrazy is a vote for the end of the world as we know it.
To Pete Albany NY:

That was quite a find. I am impressed.

Mr. Cole and Mr. Gullett were part of the staff of John Fife Symington III another friend of Mr. Mc Cain.

You would find the story very interesting.

The President has nothing to do with the economy. The President has the authority to pardon. Even if one is a Republican and the other is a Democrat.
My personal opinion is that neither barry nor john have a clue how our economy works...mccain has been a ward of the state since he was born, having never lived or worked outside of a government environment and obama seems scared or repulsed by the idea of free market capitalism and enchanted by the promise of wealth redistribution...we are so screwed no matter who wins
I agree. Barack and McCain are pretty even when it comes to what they know our country needs. They still need to get themselves some vice presidents, though, and I know of a site that has a weekly election online poll. They poll for both Dems and Reps, so tell your candidate who you think should back them up.

Just go to http://www.votenic.com
This is good news for Obama and the Democrats. If anyone thinks Obama is going to be swift boated like John Kerry, I’d suggest you reconsider.

Obama's Chicago machine is that good. No comment will go without response. Have you seen their recent web strategy to combat Washington smear Hillary started? It is going to be war for war when it comes to responding to GOP smear.

I am placing my bet on Obama and his machine. This is the democrats we’ve been waiting for since Bill Clinton left office.
The GOP is the party of borrow and spend conservatives. The party of incompetent and looser

You help the middle class by keeping their taxs (income, property, sales, etc.) as low as possible. You help the middle class by keeping corportate and business taxes low so their employers can keep them employed. You help the middle classs by keeping the capital gains taxes low so they can build and keep a retirement nest egg. You help the middle class by keeping inflation low, like that has been done for the last 28 years.

And what does Obama want to do? Give back what amounts to trinkets to some people. Obama is in way over his head. Gimmicks like he proposes may have worked back Illinois, one of the most corrupt, broke, and mismanaged states in the country. But these gimmicks don't work on a larger scale.
Desperate people without a clue always link McCain to Bush. Common, you're better than that!  McCain is way better than Obama --- period.
I'd rather have a "tax and spend liberal" than a "borrow and spend conservative!"

Ditto.... And McCain is an idiot
McCain's economic plan is "borrow and Spend". He wants to continue borrowing from China and Dubai, and continue to spend on the war in Iraq:

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/the_budget_according_to_mccain_part_ii.html
Recognized experts state that his plan of reducing earmarks and tax cuts for the wealthy will trigger the largest deficit in history; a deficit we could never recover from.
This fraud cannot be allowed anywhere near the White House.
Go Claire!  Why tax and spend when you can borrow from China and spend?  These clowns have turned a $5 trillion surplus into a $3 trillion deficit.
things were pretty good for middle class and America under clinton so obama should be pretty good for middle class and America too.  budget surplus and peace, what a concept so your choice is simple budget surplus and peace or WAR WAR WAR AND RICH GETTING RICHER WHILE YOU LOSE YOUR JOBES AND HOMES AND ANY HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
It is a fact that the ability to think rapidly declines in old age.
It is not ageism to bring up this fact and ask that our candidates submit to cognitive testing, to better reassure the public of the brain-health of our candidates.

Good to hear Sen Obama talking again today about the economy!  Definitely not Sen McCain's strong suit - keep hammering away Barack!!

Obama '08
Barack, It's The Domestic Spending Stupid!! That spending is way out of control and will bring the country to its knees if not reigned in. So what does Barack do? Sends money back to the people which buys there vote. Little do the people know though that Obama just charged that vote buying of his to the National Credit Card. Someones going to have to pay for it, with interest.

Now add in all those programs that Obama wants to Nationalize, such as health care, banking, and energy. Whose going to pay for all that free stuff Barack is going to give us? You guessed it, the middle class.
If you are thinking of voting for Mr. McCain you should see this video!!

And the really big news - Supreme Court upholds US Constitution - habeas corpus.  We are returning to a nation of law.
BTW - Our Founding Fathers passed this down from English law.

My thoughts and prayers to all my friends in Iowa and the upper mid-west.

On the contrary, with Barack Obama you will have the ability…
To live in a more peaceful world
Pay for basic necessities like gas, mortgage, food, and health care costs
Have a disposable income
Experience real change for the better
The Truth: '...The President has nothing to do with the economy...'

RIGHT !
The President just gets us into wars and tramples on the Constitution

The President is supposed to illegally wire tap Americans and approve the torture of prisoners

The President has to explain to Americans that the Geneva Convention is 'quaint' and 'archaic' and doesn't really apply to American prisoners

The President also directs the Justice Dept to prosecute members of the opposing political party and cover up for the members of his own party

The President is supposed to leak the names of CIA agents whose husbands 'don't play ball' with his administration....

Does that sum up the President's duties, Truth (sic) ?

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS

Geoff (Sent Thursday, June 12, 2008 11:37 AM)

There you have it. Vote for McCain because Geoff said he is way better than Obama. Period!

Very convincing argument, Geoff.
I would rather tax than borrow.  There is not a such thing as a tax cut when you're in debt.  That's like quitting your job before your bills are due.  The debt will remain and you have to pay it off eventually.  So you'll just have to work two or three jobs in the future.  Just like Americans will get taxed two or three times the amount we are now because of Bush/McCain policies.
Taxes are a Shell game. The politics of taxes are to keep moving the cups around until no one knows where the tax is. No matter who pays the taxes directly to the goverment, the burden of those taxes are always paid by the end consumers. Just like the gas taxes, if we asked the oil companies to pay those taxes, then the cost of the tax ends up in the cost of the product. Currently, the gas tax is part of the cost of the product, but the oil companies collect the tax and pass it on the the goverment. It is suppose to be used for building the interstate highway system, but  congress takes that money and allocates the money to pork projects. We pay so many taxes in so many different ways there is no way we can understand or know how much we actually pay in taxes.
The biggest tax cut most small businesses (and folks in general) have received during the Bush years is the tax cut you get when you are paying less in taxes because your profits and income, along with your IRA balance and the value of your home, are plummeting.

In terms of disposable income there is no question that the overwhelming majority of Americans, including most of the middle class, is worse off than during the Clinton years. The tiny  benefit most of us have derived from the Bush tax cuts don't come close to making up for what we've lost with income dropping, stagnating or not increasing enough to keep up with the skyrocketing costs of basics like health care, education and now pretty much everything because the price of oil, instead of going down to $20 a barrel, as the neocons promised, has ballooned to over $130 because of their policies.

McCain promises more of the same.  He now thinks the huge tax breaks for the rich, which clearly haven't improved the economy for the rest of us, should remain and has no plan to make any major economic policy changes that might help the rest of us.

People love the sound of the words "lower taxes" but they should stop and think about what good it does them if the result turns out to be a lousy economy with less disposable income, not more, for all but a few.

I'd MUCH rather be making what our small business was providing us with during the Clinton years, even if we had to pay a slightly higher tax rate, which we wouldn't because we never made over $200 thousand.  The  subcontractors we no longer need would probably prefer it too.  Fat chance of that happening if we elect McSame.  Less taxes because of less income isn't my idea of a desirable tax cut.
I've been away from posting on 1st Read the last several day's as me & my girlfriend of 7 year's have been busy planning Our wedding this coming saturday.

Claire McCaskill has been the Staunchest surragate for Barack for sometime now. This woman is tough & as i've said before, would make an Excellent VP choice.Webb, Warner, & Kaine from VA would also be gr8.

McCains Latest gaffe from yesterday about bringing our Troop's Home to their loved ones being Unimportant should be a Real wakeup call to every American, whether you're a Vet or just a Plain ole Patriot (like myself). He is Not what some make him out to be. He is Angry Delusional Ex-POW, who has been fighting within his Mind(for years)just how he could Retaliate against the Veitnamese people for doing him harm.He was No war hero, just another pilot, shot down in a War zone, captured & lived to see another day. many Never got the break that he did.

Barack has hammering Mccain & the GOP since becoming the Democrat nominee.I always knew he would'nt Disrespect Hillary(a fellow Democrat)as it's Not his nature. However, McCain & the GOP have been witnessing 1st hand that Barack is for Real. Not 1 single thing will go Unanswered from him & he'll keep the American people 1st in his qwest for POTUS.

Stay Focused America, the MSM will try anyway possible to keep the General debate from being about Real issues we face on a daily basis. It's up to Us to keep ourselves & anyone we can up to date.

See yall in a couple week's.

Barack Obama for POTUS !

Delusional thinking By Common Sense American's Is OVER !!!!!!
RUSSERT: The fact is you are different than George Bush.

SEN. McCAIN: No. No. I-the fact is that I'm different but the fact is that I have agreed with President Bush far more than I have disagreed. And on the transcendent issues, the most important issues of our day, I've been totally in agreement and support of President Bush.

McCain is good at distorting his own words and distorting the words of Senator Obama.  That's all McCain does --  distort words because he just rattles on trying to be a republican puppet with no mind of his own.

I give no credence to any words spoken by mean-man McCain.

Read the truth about the candidates tax plans from the Tax Policy Center.

Sourece: http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/publications/url.cfm?ID=411693

From their report:  "If enacted, the Obama and McCain tax plans would have radically different effects on the distribution of tax burdens in the United States. The Obama tax plan would make the tax system significantly more progressive by providing large tax breaks to those at the bottom of the income scale and raising taxes significantly on upper-income earners. The McCain tax plan would make the tax system more regressive, even compared with a system in which the 2001–06 tax cuts are
33
made permanent. It would do so by providing relatively little tax relief to those at the bottom of the income scale while providing huge tax cuts to households at the very top of the income distribution."

As long as we get to the issues, there's just NO POSSIBLE WAY that McCain can win this election.

If it becomes a mud-slinging-fest, McCain might keep it close, if we have a terrorist attack - all hell will break loose on both sides.
Kyle

Where are you getting yyour info, becuase its totally wrong!
Listen,
Where do you guys come off saying you don't think Obama knows anything of economics. It's always "I think he doesn't know anything" or "I have a hunch he's clueless".
How about instead of guessing you do some research. Look at his voting record on economic issues. Look at the way he ran his finances in the primary campaign. Do the same with McCain.
This is the exact reason why there should be more of an emphasis on civics in public school and college. A democracy does not work if the people are uninformed. Before we invaded Iraq 60% of Americans thought that Saddam was behind 9/11. A large number of Americans think that Obama is a muslim. This is because they are too lazy to research the truth. It is much easier to ingest sound bytes and smears and be told what to think than to form your own educated opinion.
So if you "have a hunch" that something is wrong with either candidate I encourage you to use the many resources at your disposal and make sure. Only then do you have the right to complain when you feel the government isn't serving you.
Vinnie, the middle class is paying for this stupid war now. Why shouldnt we help pay for healthcare etc which will only help us?  Also, tax increases are for those making over $250k (not middle class).  Come on.
McSame said that bringing the troops home is not important.

My husband is currently on active duty in the military. This just shows you how out of touch this man is. He opposes the bill that would give active duty personnel extra benefits. There is a large number of military families who live on food stamps.  I don't hear him talk about that. McSame is living in the past. Kudos and repects for his military record, but he returned home.  Over 4,000 soldiers died in Iraq and million more died in previous wars.  These soldiers never came home to thier loved ones.

I am also concerned about a lot women issues that McSame does not support especially Roe vs. Wade.  I refused to have the government tell me what and what I cannot do with my body. That is what McSame will give women if he wins the election.

I would encourage all military wives and women out there to not vote for this man. Bring the troops home so they can enjoy their families just like McSame is doing with his.
goodwin, arizona,
Thanks for the link.
Lemme quote mccain, if i may: "obviously I disagree witht he majority of the American people..."

This man wants to be a leader. This man. This election season just took on a whole new light for me. There are people out there who support him fully. Scary. Even Pat Buchanan hinks Mccain wants to go to war whenever he can..

This is serious stuff...
Wake up you Obamatrons, I see the same miserable economy that your other great liberal created. Doe J Carter ring any bells? The last 8 years have been pretty darn good for me. But then I have an education to fall back on as oppsoed to some notion of a given or protected job. Then again, I dont blame or give credit to any president for my own accomplishments. One party just lets me keep more of my own money than the other. I guess if I didnt pay taxes , I wouldnt worry about them being raised either.
McCain will not help the middle class. His life-long education in politics has been through the Republican agenda. We had enough promises from Bush who wanted us to believe in his "compasionate conservatism." All we got were the smiles and promises that all would be well. Putin and China got more compasion than the American worker did. I DO NOT BELIEVE MCCAIN. His voting record speaks for itself and shows no interest in anything but big business.
Didn't Obama propose increasing the cap on Social Security taxes?  If so, that would impact people making 97k or more.
Just on quick thing about McCain comments. I read all the comments, including one from a person that was fighting in Irak (and may go back).

Being from a foreign country, I can tell you that if the US stays longer in Irak, with no timetable for the withdraw, it will keep creating conflict there, and people will hate us more and more. My country was under military regims for decades. If another coutry would have invade the country with the excuse of liberation, freedom and democracy, we would have welcome them. But if they would've stayed, and stayed, I can asure you common people like us, would have get a gun, and started fighting "the invador". It's hard to understand from here, but just think about it for a minute.
So, in order to let that area of the world calm down, we need to get out as soon as possible. Yes, keep a close eye, but get out. They may go back to a dictatorship, or not, but we will need to learn to live with that.
McCain is talking about Iran already, how that could be good. He doesn't want to talk with them, he just want to attack them as soon as they show that they are not doing what he wants.
Is that what you want in the leader of the stronger country of the world?
