McCain on Guantanamo ruling, age

Posted: Thursday, June 12, 2008 12:51 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Carrie Dann
On the Guantanamo ruling, McCain said he hasn’t read the opinion yet, but said the ruling “obviously concerns me."

“We should pay attention to Justice Roberts,” McCain said, adding, "It is a decision the Supreme Court has made and now we need to move forward.”

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell talks with Sam Brownback about the Supreme Court's ruling on Guantanamo Bay and whether he is interested being vice president.

He reiterated his support for closing Guantanamo Bay.

On Jim Johnson/Eric Holder, McCain says the media and political observers will make the decision, but says “it is a matter of record” that Holder recommended the pardoning of Mark Rich.

“All of those things will be taken into consideration," McCain said, "especially when you’re entrusting individuals with one of the most important decisions” --selecting a vice president.

On John Kerry saying McCain was “confused” on foreign policy yesterday, McCain somberly said, “I’m obviously disappointed in a comment like that.”

On a potential Colombia trip, McCain said travel plans are “in flux” and his campaign is “looking at a lot of different places." He pivoted to use the question to slam Obama on CAFTA.

*** UPDATE *** The Obama campaign released the following statement from the senator on the ruling: “Today's Supreme Court decision ensures that we can protect our nation and bring terrorists to justice, while also protecting our core values. The Court's decision is a rejection of the Bush Administration's attempt to create a legal black hole at Guantanamo -- yet another failed policy supported by John McCain. This is an important step toward reestablishing our credibility as a nation committed to the rule of law, and rejecting a false choice between fighting terrorism and respecting habeas corpus.

"Our courts have employed habeas corpus with rigor and fairness for more than two centuries, and we must continue to do so as we defend the freedom that violent extremists seek to destroy. We cannot afford to lose any more valuable time in the fight against terrorism to a dangerously flawed legal approach. I voted against the Military Commissions Act because its sloppiness would inevitably lead to the Court, once again, rejecting the Administration's extreme legal position. The fact is, this Administration's position is not tough on terrorism, and it undermines the very values that we are fighting to defend.  Bringing these detainees to justice is too important for us to rely on a flawed system that has failed to convict anyone of a terrorist act since the 9-11 attacks, and compromised our core values."

What McSame said is he hasn't read the opinion yet, but what he meant was Joe turncoat Lieberman hadn't read it to him and explained it to him yet.
Just goes to show that evan a bad Supreme Court can make a correct ruling once in a while.
[The Obama-ites are cheering for the terrorists? Somethings never change I guess.]

--I think that is perhaps a bit of a hyperbole.  I don't think anyone is cheering for the terrorists to be found not-guilty, by contrast for our government to handle appropriately the terrorists we have captured and to protect our country's image.  By contrast, I hear that a bunch of Obama-ites, Democrats and U.S. citizens in general are cheering for the U.S. of A.  The question Mr. Logger, why aren't you?
Memo to Uncle Fluffy:

If you haven't read the ruling yet then how on earth can you suggest we should listen to Justice Roberts?

Oh, that's right...that's the knee-jerk reaction that scores you points with the Bush Huggers!

Hey, shouldn't the actual ruling be 5-3 instead of 5-4?  Let's be real...when was the last time Clarence Thomas had any interpretation of the US Constitution other than the one that Antonin Scalia TOLD HIM he should have?
Like I've said a million times, do you really want McCain on the world stage representing America? The rest of the world is already laughing at the fact that a idioit like Bush could be voted into office 2x by the American people, please don't do it a 3rd time. It's time to increase your standing around the world. McBush would not only continue more of the same, it would put you back decades!!!!

From a true objective American outsider
Just goes to show that even a bad Supreme Court can make a correct ruling once in a while.
I'll give him points for wanting to close Guantanamo
It's a NATIONAL DISGRACE and a WAR CRIME

But, McCain FLIP FLOPPED on torture
First, he OPPOSED TORTURE\Then, he voted to let George Bush decide what is torture and what isn't Torture

George Bush sees non-existant WMDs, but he can't see torture

John McCain, keeping you barefoot and pregnant…

(then, dumping you for some hot, young chick)

John McCain, More of the same
John McCain: Bomb, bomb, bomb ... Bomb, Bomb Iran
Oh boy.....McCain will have to get Lindsey Graham to explain this one to him.

As for John McCain's statement about Jim Johnson/Eric Holder.

Perhaps John McCain should remember the year 2000 when Dick Cheney 'vetted' himself Vice President of the USA.  Clearly a CONFLICT of INTEREST!

Here's the NY Times article for reference:

I bet this ruling does concern him.  Huffington Post just revealed that on Meet the Press 2005, McOld is caught on tape saying, "I totally support Bush on the transcendent issues."
I'm a little bit worried that the Republicans will throw McOld under the bus at the GOP convention, once they realize he has mentally "lost it".  Stranger things have happened.  I'm not kidding.
Concerns him?  Come on, he was detained in Nam, he should know what it is like to have your life and right striped away from you with no recourse.

This man needs to lose, but he will do so by opening his mouth to speak.
It's called the "Rule of Law".  McCain shouldn't sound so disappointed.

Anyone else get the impression that the Campaign staffers for Senator McCain don't have a guiding principle to run their campaign on?
Hard to steer when you don't know which way to go
McCain is another Bush, confused, unread, uninformed and on, and on. Is this what we want?  We need change and Obama is the one.
When McCain was forced to reject the evangelical vote, Obama was wise to reach out to them.  Now he is attacking the ridiculous smears that are circulating around the internet about him.  He is fighting them where they started, on the internet.  Check this out!

Good news for Barack Obama who has been for Habeus Corpus all along.
Very little of h\wat he said made sense to me. But if he wants to close Gitmo, who does he think is going to decide where those guys are gonna go?  Bush? No, old man, the courts.  And that's just what the Supremems have wisely said here. And hopefully congress now has the "testicular fortitude" to back the Supremes up, not contravene them.
Too much hate for McCain here. People, please tell me why you don't like him that much. Did you lose your house, lose a family member in Iraq, high gas prices, etc.  It seems that Obama made you swallowed something and you afraid to spit it out because you might be embarrased. Tell you what, McCain is an OK guy than Barack. The point is that Bush and Cheney team was the one running the country for 8 years and not McCain. Guilty by association equates to bad judgment.
Uncle Fluffy must have forgotten his oath of office...

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God."

See, folks, he didn't promise to defend the nation.  He promised to defend the Constitution.
Day to day, Senator McCain is acting more presidentiable than Nobama. Even if Obama brings the whole circus in town and the best cheerleaders, the smart people cannot be easily deceived by his antics.
NEW POLL SHOWS MOST PEOPLE DON'T BELIEVE POLLS!
It may be just me,but I sense McCain simmering barely beneath the surface...a ticking time bomb.  Matt Lauer's question about the surge an his subsequent attempt to interject a comment was very telling.....waiting for his head to explode is just a matter of time.....I hope I'm watching when it does
Major Pane,
Thanks for your voice of reason.  I'm with you that McCain isn't Bush.  But stand by for the excoriating that is sure to follow for you.
Cheap-shot by Kerry
Pete****Did you find out about Afghanistan yet(our conversation yesterday)?
Ron Indiana, I have been having the same thoughts on the Republican Party sticking with John McCain. I'm suspecting he's going to come up with an illness or something before the convention. That's how bad of a candidate he is.

At first I compared him to Bob Dole as many did. However, Bob Dole didn't have to deal with such important issues as McCain now has to do. Dole was pre-9/11.

I bet McCain is gone before September. Unless the republicans have already given up on this year's election completely, which is likely.  Not much support out there for him, that's for sure.

There's not much support as a whole for the republicans in Congress. They're considered sell outs by their supporters.

I don't know why. They gave GWB everything he wanted.
Major Pane:

It isn't a matter of disliking Senator McCain.  It is that he voted to support Bush's policies 95% of the time.  There is no reason to think he would be any different.
Major Pane,
I grew up in Arizona and I have family there.  Arizona homeowners were devasted during the Savings and Loan debacle of the 80s.  Mr McCain was one of the "Keating 5", U.S. Senators censured on the floor of the senate for their complicity and criminal behavior associated with that scandal.  So yes its possible that some of those who do not like Mr McCain did loose their homes and their life savings and thier retirements.  And yes its possible that some people resent his blind following of a policy of unending occupation and guerilla war after having experienced it first hand and don't appreciate their sons and daughters being sacrificed in support of that policy.  Lastly, they don't think our national treasure and lifes blood is worth giving for cheaper gas.  They'd rather see us keep those young men and women alive and use our resources to find alternative forms of energy that will free us from ever having to send them into harms way again for profit and driving convenience.  So its not really guilt by association but maybe we are all finally waking up from 9/11 fever and are ready to really address our problems and issues with a new approach rather than the same old Republican song and dance.

Your comment is so  true.
Let’s reverse the decision.  Suppose that because these people appeared Muslim either on our soil or foreign soil and were actually not quality; what does that say for their “presumed innocent until proved guilty”?

Major Pane....He is a jerk that'sa why I don't like him.  He is a flip-flopper and continuously throws around crazy ideas.  A maverick some may say, and I call them idiots just as I think of hme.  If he said something worthwhile sometimes maybe I could listen to him, but he is plainly ignorant to facts that I support.  Sorry, I don't like him.
McCain is so weak, so uninformed, so desperately willing to embrace the slimiest Bush administration policies while equally desperate to pretend he still deserves to be seen as a maverick and, yes, so confused, the American people will be rightly considered the stupidest on the planet if we follow the re-election of the Boob-in-Chief with the election of McMore-of-the-Same.
the ignorance of the posters on this site and their willingness to twist what is actually written into what they think they read and what they think they know, never ceases to amaze me --

Major Pane, OK (Sent Thursday, June 12, 2008 1:21 PM)

-----------------------------------------------------

The John McCain of 2000 is gone.  The current John McCain has abandoned him and all he once held dear.

If John Kerry was the flip-flop candidate in 2004, John McCain has seized the mantle in 2008...

Waterboarding - Was against it, now for it.

Bush Tax Cuts - Was against it, now for it.

Roe v. Wade - Was for it, now against it.

Campaign Reform - Was for it, now against it.

Lobbying Reform - Was for it, now against it.

Iraq - “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” has become “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”
Just like Bush and Cheney, McCain has a real problem with the Consitution.  It's not the Situational Constitution.  It's the U.S. Constitution and the Supreme Court makes it's rulings based upon the U.S. Constitution.  Bush doesn't like it, Cheney hates it, and McCain is "concerned about it".  He, like Bush, would be another disaster were he to be elected.  These Conservative, rule of law guys don't like it and don't want to abide by the law unless it benefits their point of view or their agenda.  But what else is new?
Nothing on Attny. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, who had represented Rich from 1985 until the spring of 2000?
Major Pane,

We don't hate McCain. We just think he wouldn't be a good president. We all have different reasons for thinking that way. My reason for thinking negative about his presidency is his flip-flops. If someone who was tortured votes in favor of making torture legal, I  question his integrity. There are tens of examples about his flip-flops like this.
Man where's a Bork when you need one, huh duhbayah? It's thrilling to see our highest court act wisely and independently as was intended in the constitution.
Too bad McCain's disappointed his confusion is being noticed and commented upon.

What he needs is his not confused but equally wrong lapdog Lieberman by his side 24/7.  That way, when McSame continues advocating irresponsible policy positions, at least we can be assured it is based on poor judgment, as opposed to lack of even a rudimentary grasp of the facts.
ANyone hear that old man Mc-Cane doesn't know how to use a computer?

He was asked MAC or PC?  His answer (paraphrasing)was neither.  His wife/staff handle that stuff.
Ok quick question when is MSNBC going to catch up with current news?  Huffington Post put up the John McCain video from "Meet the Press" in 2005 where he aligns himself completely with the policies of the Bush administration?
As my wife said this morning - "my young students in class are confused; McCain is just old, angry, and confused. He should just get over it (it being VietNam).  He's alive and lived a very good life on his wife's finances and contacts."
It's funny that you said McCain is not Bush.  Because that's how everyone links Obama to different people.  I think McCain gets so much crap because he wants to continue what Bush has done.
I hate McCain.
the obamma camp and thier policy of hate and personal destruction should be uplifting.
The man was tortured fighting for the constitution who are you and what have you done .
I don't understand why people can not disagree about politics without the name calling and belittling of the party or person they disagree with. It seems childish. Just because you disagree with a candidate or political party does not mean you can't have an adult constructive debate about the issues that you disagree with. This is the problem with our government today no matter how good of an idea it may be Democrat or Republican it has to be bad to other and they must vote against it.
two cents for common sense
Hey everyone, how about this idea:

Caroline Kennedy for Vice President!
