McCain camp hits Obama on gas prices

Posted: Thursday, June 12, 2008 1:27 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
The McCain campaign held a conference call to hit Obama on his stance on gas prices, accusing him of having said in an interview with CNBC’s John Harwood that Americans should “somehow get used to higher gas prices.”

VIDEO: The presumptive Democratic nominee discusses gas prices, taxes, the housing crisis and other matters with CNBC's John Harwood.

“Clearly the country is in shock when they see escalating gas prices,” Republican Virginia congressman Eric Cantor said. “It’s time for us to act. What we heard yesterday was Barack Obama indicate he is out of touch.” He added that “Somehow the American people should sort of somehow get used to higher gas prices … reflects that he just doesn’t get it.

That people would “just have to get used to them is just out of touch,” Cantor said.

But is the assertion taken out of context, and in fact, a mischaracterization?

When asked by Harwood if higher gas prices were an incentive to shift to alternative means of energy, Obama said the U.S. has "been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage." When Harwood followed up and asked if the higher prices then could actually help, Obama responded this way:

"I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money into their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more quickly, particularly U.S. automakers, then I think ultimately, we can come out of this stronger and have a more efficient energy policy than we do right now."

The McCain campaign also criticized Obama on being against the gas tax holiday, a fight Obama fought against Clinton in the run up to the Indiana and North Carolina primaries.

“Sen. McCain is not out of touch,” said campaign adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin. He said a gas tax suspension would help truckers reliant on diesel fuel and “families to get through the summer.”

Holtz-Eakin, like Clinton did, raised the specter of hypocrisy, saying Obama has “dismissed” the gas tax holiday “as a gimmick even though he voted for it in Illinois.” Holtz-Eakin said “it worked in Illinois.” Obama has said it did not work in Illinois, which is why he now does not support such measures.

Holtz-Eakin was asked if being in favor of the gas-tax holiday was risky politically given that economists have largely panned the idea and Obama seemed to win the point against Clinton, the adviser said McCain’s “political calculations are based on what’s the right thing for the American people.” He puts “what’s right first and politics second.”

He defended the gas-tax holiday as a “successful way to do something quickly.” He said it “isn’t a panacea, but can be done quickly and done simply. What Sen. Obama is proposing [a $1,000 middle-class tax cut], you couldn’t sort it out with 100 tax accountants.”

NOTES: Interestingly, the McCain campaign was asked by Amanda Carpenter at the conservative blog, Townhall.com, if McCain is still against drilling in ANWR given the high gas prices. Holtz-Eakin replied that McCain believes “drilling in ANWR is not wise at this time.” A sign the right is none-too-happy with McCain’s energy policy?

Fuller transcript of CNBC interview on the gas prices question:
HARWOOD: As you know, gas prices now have hit a national average of over $4 a gallon. You have criticized the idea that John McCain has floated of a gas tax holiday as a gimmick. Is the reality of the situation for American consumers that there's nothing that you could do as president or anybody could do as president in the short term to relieve that pain?

Sen. OBAMA: What is true is that given the global price of oil right now, that we can't artificially lower gas prices. What we can do is provide people immediate relief through our tax code. And so I've proposed accelerating a second stimulus rebate to put hundreds of dollars into the pockets of families to offset some of these rising costs during the summer and into the fall.
When I'm president next year, what I'd like to do is pass a middle class tax cut, $1,000 per family per year to offset higher prices in gas, food, medical care. Long-term, though, the only way we're going to deal with these high gas prices is if we change how we consume oil. And that means investing in alternative fuels, it means that we are raising fuel efficiency standards on cars, that we're helping the automakers retool. Obviously, consumers are changing their habits pretty rapidly. But our US automakers are going to need some help retooling. We should be encouraging that. And when we look at other ways that we're using energy, we have to adapt renewable, clear energies like solar, wind and biodiesel. And I've got an Apollo project, a Manhattan project, to embark upon that new energy future that we need.

HARWOOD: As difficult as this is for consumers right now, is, in fact, high gas prices what we need to let the market work, a line incentive so that we do shift to alternative means of energy?

Sen. OBAMA: Well, I think that we have been slow to move in a better direction when it comes to energy usage. And the president, frankly, hasn't had an energy policy. And as a consequence, we've been consuming energy as if it's infinite. We now know that our demand is badly outstripping supply with China and India growing as rapidly as they are. So...

HARWOOD: So could these high prices help us?

Sen. OBAMA: I think that I would have preferred a gradual adjustment. The fact that this is such a shock to American pocketbooks is not a good thing. But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment, first of all by putting more money into their pockets, but also by encouraging the market to adapt to these new circumstances more quickly, particularly US automakers, then I think ultimately, we can come out of this stronger and have a more efficient energy policy than we do right now.

Nice try, old man ... but it won't work this year!!!
OLD MAN YELLS AT CLOUD!!!

OBAMA '08 & '12
The President (Democrat or Republican) has nothing to do with the price of gas.

As CG of MI explained a few days ago, the trading margin on oil futures trading controls the price of oil.

First Read also had Jim Cramer of CNBC explain that.
Panderer slanderer.  The angry, confused little War Gnome is going to be the face on the modern republican party's death mask.
Hey, McThuselah! The 18 cent gas tax holiday is a sham. It's dumb. You make yourself look dumb everytime you mention it. Gas prices have gone up 50 cents since you first proposed it. Any mythical savings have long been wiped out. The oil companies would not pass it on, they would keep it.

How about we end all subsidies, support and arms sales to OPEC nations? Then you'd see them start pumping, and prices would flatten out.
Ya $1000 would offset higher prices for food, gas, & health care???-in my family of five? Not so much.
This was a great interview - and the Republicans should do all they can not to publicize it. It shows Obama to be a thoughtful non-idealogue willing to build consesus based on facts........

Obama in a landslide folks - don't believe the hype - Just listen to him - He runs rings around McCain.
Ouch! (like a kick between the legs)... take it like a man Obama.  It's hard to defend this kind of counterattack from the McCain side if Obama's garble has no substance.
According to the Tax Policy Center, gas purchasers would have little if any benefit from the gas tax holiday.

Senator Obama is wisely not using this political tactic to provide false promises.
Give me a break. Everyone knows this is political pandering. Besides, McCain hasn't even been to the Senate in a year to vote on any bill let alone author one and get it through the House, Senate and then get the Pres signature. I really wish he would talk about honest policy and issue proposals. Plus, why is he campaigning in Canada and Columbia? I thought he was running for Pres of the USA. Are we going to owe these other countries something if he wins. We ought to focus this election on Americans and what is best for our country.
Free markets are the most efficient determinant of fair value.  This is the mantra of fiscal conservatives.  Isn't it ironic that Obama's feelings on a gas tax rebate are more in line with fiscal conservatives than McNeedsACane?  McNeedsACane's support for a gas tax rebate is so antithetical to a free market economy that it makes him look socialist.  Kudos to Obama for resisting to pander by offering gimmicks.  Lasting relief is far preferable to temporary relief.  Obama's comment about us getting used to high oil prices is merely his admission that we have a ton of work to do to fix this imbalance.
John McCain is a FRAUD and a Liar and an Adulterer!
Read between the lines...

Republicans continue a campaign to force drilling in Alaska preserves.

Even when every American is suffering from high prices, the Republicans still side with the Oil Companies and the top 2% of the rich.  Sad sad...
Obama the panderer. The repubs got you where it hurts...
Bobbi- So you'd take $60 over $1000? You are an absolute genius.
Obama is 100% right on this subject. Period.
Lets see... so Obama... the one who just paid off his student loans... came from a single parent family... has two young children... has worked on the streets of the inner city... is out of touch...

It seems to me that McCain... the one who divoreced his first wife after she was in a horrific car accident, married a beer baroness who has her own private jet, who used the jet for his campaign, who does not want to support the GI Bill porposed by Senator Webb that would give Americans serving abroad the same benefits as the GI Bill post WWII, and who does not think that having military families split up as moms and dads serve in Iraq and their children are wondering where their parent is in the world... is the one who is out of touch...

How can people take his policies seriously. Wake up people... America needs a president who will change things for the better... not do more of the same... McCain has voted for Bush's policies 95% of the time in 2007 and 100% in 2008.
Reading the transcript, I am not at all divining the McCain Camp's interpretation. I just don't see it.

Someone need's to tell McCain and his people that not ever issue can be spun, reduced to bumper sticker length, and spouted back at us.

Sometimes issues require more consideration than that. Like the economy and enviornment and national security.

They're playing the old game. I hope it doesn't work.

Obama '08
I was just watching 1pm segment with Andrea Mitchell and noticed that when Obama was shown in Wisconsin explaining his tax plan, the banner msnbc displayed below him was "Obama attacks McCain's tax plan."  Just after that McCain was shown at an earlier appearance in Boston. The banner msnbc ran said "McCain highlights his differenences with Obama on Iraq."

Curious.
Of course Senate Republicans just vote against ending the huge tax breaks and subsidies enjoyed by the oil companies.  They consistently vote against any and all changes to energy policy unless it involves opening up ANWAR.  Their idea of an energy policy is making sure the Exxons, the Mobiles, the Chevrons all continue to reap huge profits AND keep their precious subsidies and that U.S. automakers not be penalized for not meeting more stringent mileage requirements.  Their policy is no policy.
A gas-tax holiday paid for by oil company windfall profits would be a short-term band-aid for rising prices. I'll take a band-aid. I am losing bookings at my resort because filling up the tank is making travelers form other states nauseous. Our economy is greatly tied to consumer confidence. If consumers felt, even for just the summer, they were getting some relief from high gas prices- it would help. Just because Hillary backed it doesn't mean obama can't.
I'm calling a 40 state victory for Obama!

On every issue he mops the floor with the old man.

PS...Soldiers are supporting Obama, not McCain.
I've read the transcript three times and still can't see how Cantor came up with his remarks. Obama never says Americans should just get used to higher prices. He does talk about ways to combat higher prices and I guess that could mean he doesn't think prices are going to come down. I really have trouble understanding the neocon mind.
The demorats wont fix your gas prices thier in bed with big oil too.
Rod- thank you!
IN REALITY, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO GET USE TO HIGHER GAS PRICES.  Even if the price drops this fall we will not being going back to last year prices.  Just as all the other countries are making adjustments we in Americal will have to do the same and to make pretend that we won't is misleading amd counter-productive to our nation's growth.
Is this the Obama website?? Oops my bad its MSNBC. Typical of the MSNBC pundits to rationailze a socialist comment. It is well known in the political circles that Democrats like higher prices on gas because they believe that it is the only way to stop people from driving as much as they do. This way we can save the world from global warming.

Once again Barack Hussein Obama has shown how far left he truly is. People need to wise up and understand that Obama will only set this country back decades.

Oh wait...I am still on Barack's website not a fair and balanced site. Barack is the next great messiah...he will heal the world of its troubles. Evil doers will bow throw their guns down and beg for mercy after they hear him speak.

May God help us if he was ever elected!
Alright, gas prices are not going down people!

No amount of drilling new oil reserves in the US or anywhere else is going to offset the rise in Global demand. Doing those things will help oil companies make more money, but that's about it. Period.

Stability in the middle east won't help either.  Face it, as far as petroleum goes we've picked the low hanging fruit and now everyone's addicted. Petroleum experts have seen this coming for a long time. It's time to swallow the bitter pill and find something sustainable to replace it. The sooner we do this the sooner we can ignore the middle east, have a more stable economy, lower CO2 emissions (if you "believe" in that), and hopefully lower energy costs.

We know how the petroleum story ends: we're gonna run out. The sooner we do something about it the less painful its going to be.
A $1000 means almost month of living expenses to me and my family.

The price oil even in Saudi words is unjustified - it all about the speculators today. So, speculators not OPEC is setting the price of a barrel of oil.  Wait until this bubble bursts and it will - how much money will be lost in retirement 401k funds?
Ya $1000 would offset higher prices for food, gas, & health care???-in my family of five? Not so much.

So a $1000 stimulus check is insulting to you but you constantly argue that McCain's $33 gas tax holiday is a great idea? What sense does that make? Explain to all of us how 33 dollars in your pocket is a great idea but 1000 dollars is not. That is beyond hypocritical. Good job Bobbi! Spoken like a true Republican!
I saw an interesting interview yesterday with Ben Stein, who said that the gas prices will decrease once the US states that it is working to balance the budget.  Here's why:
- Gas prices are based on the currency of the US dollar so when the dollar is valued low, anything based on the dollar will increase in price to compensate
- The dollar has been devalued based on our huge deficit and low confidence in US economics
- Announce a concrete plan to balance the budget which will in turn begin to raise confidence in the value of the dollar
- This will rally the dollar, which will, in turn raise its value and ultimately lower gas prices.

In my humble opinion, Ben Stein was making a valid point.  Anyone care to comment?
Unless you're going to back domestic drilling you're as useless as Obama & the rest of the democrats.

Pay no attention to who is causing the real problems.

thanks to bill-tb at American thinker for posting the list :-)
Oh please McCain, enough with the lies. Sen Obama is telling us the truth and of course, you guys can't handle the truth.

As a nation, we have got to change our ways of doing things. Start first with using less oil and gas, for years we've been cruising along as if there was endless supply of cheap fuels.
Americans have such a sense of entitlement, the world doesn't belong to us, get use to sharing and doing with less.  If you listen to the GOP and follow their line of 'thinking', which doesn't have an original idea, the country is doomed to be a third world state in a generation.
I can't even believe McCain would try to make this an issue?  He speaks the truth and eloquently at that.  They are grasping at straws now.  Big time.
Bobbi from Eau Claire, Wisconsin - you don't know what you're talking about.

The oil compnaies will increase the price of gas so that you will not get any "help."  Why would they do that?  Because they already know that you'll pay $5.00 per gallon for gas and you're not gonna do a damn thing about it.

In other words, Obama is right and you (and McCain) are WRONG.

No company that you know is going to reduce prices of any product if they know you will pay the higher price.
FYI: to the GOP (grand old party). In my opinion you as a group should hang you heads in shame. I am an average american; "white" 71 year old woman, mother & grandmother. I still work full time as a SW Support Rep for a Dental Management SW company. I can tell you that I read everything I can get my hands on as well as what is on the internet. I am "sick to death" of the out & out lies and overall mean spirits of the Republicans. I find that friends and family feel just like I do. This country is in big trouble and the GOP wants to continue business as usual. It tells me that the people that are out of touch are YOU (GOP)! I used to respect john McCain but I will NEVER vote for him. In my opinion he has sold his soul in the hopes of being president. I hope & pray (yes I'm Southern Baptist) that Barack Obama wins by a land slide. Throw the bums out!!!!!
Bobbi

And what do we do when the oil companies, or the gas station retailer raises the price of gas AGAIN to make up the difference.  Which, in all probability, they would do.

Yes, it sounds great!   And just a question.  Why do we have to bring Sen Clinton into this discussion?  This has nothing to do with disrespecting Sen Clinton.  And how the Sen McCain got the interpretation that they did out of Sen Obama's remarks -- they must have been listening to/reading a different interview.

Obama '08

I recall Bush promising us low prices for gasoline.

Senator McCain, if you still plan to use the highway fund, then you have lost every single state hit by the flooding going on right now.

We here in Wisconsin need help with our roads, bridges, and dams.  Taking money from that fund means we'll each be spending $500 to detour around areas that won't be fixed for at least a year.  Senator McCain, you offer us $40 for the summer, instead of fixing the damage.

It clearly shows you do not understand the impact rain and winter have in most states.  Unlike Arizona, we are experiencing tragedies and you offer to take the money away from repairs.
When will the Dem 527 start on John McCain's confession in Vietnam to the bombing of civilians.  He broke the military code.  His father saved him when he came home, and they even gave the man a medal for his turn-coat remarks.

Who ever said this coward was a hero?
Energy policies suck in this country. Bush's family has been getting millions of dollars in kick backs from oil companies. Hell they own stock in a few of them. Just like Prescott Bush who sold weapons to the Nazi's, Bush has his roots so deep in oil it would take two lifetimes for him to see renewable energy as an option. Won'tChangeMcCain will keep feeding the people lies just like Bush. At least Obama can be realisitic in saying that changing the current infrastructure will take time, but it is neceassry to do so; so we do not have to be dependant on the oil industry while they make billions and we suffer at the pumps.
To Thanks:

Exactly.
The only good thing about the rediculously high oil prices today, is that when the market does implode, a barrel of oil will be less than $70, i.e, a more than 50% drop, and thus, I suspect, and hope, that the price of gas will follow.

Oh, McWearsDepends, you complain about oil but what have you done for us lately in the Senate? Nothing. You've been the most absentee presidential senator candidate.

Obama!
The McCain group reminds me of the movie Grumpy Old Men
Didn't McCain just say that he didn't think gas prices would go any lower? (the answer is yes)

Why are these things left out of your reporting?

http://infogiant.wordpress.com/
Johnny boy, there you go again with your Duel Personality.Your campaign has criticized Obama on being against the gas tax holiday; actually it is a gimmick.

Yes, it's true Barack did vote for it while in Springfield, IL.
It’ hypocritical of you to berate Barack, especially when Barack explained it only benefited the retailers and not us, the Illinoisan, consumers.

Btw: where is the “gas holiday tax” you and Hillary proposed? Is it you’re double talking confused or you have forgotten?

Ouch! (like a kick between the legs)... take it like a man Obama.  It's hard to defend this kind of counterattack from the McCain side if Obama's garble has no substance.
Major Pane, OK
*****

You didnt actually read the article, did you.  Admit it.
McCorpse has nothing else to hold over Obama except distort a few words.  We have 5 longs months of this
finger pointing and name calling.  I whish the election was in Sept. after the convention.
To "Thanks":  Excellent point. Ben Stein is a very smart man.  And, he is not the only economist who has made the connection between the value of the dollar and the cost of oil.  It is hard to argue against the idea that if we buy oil with dollars and dollars are losing value, oil is costing us more and more.
John McCain said that he doesn't know much about the economy. With the gas tax, his position disregards what 95% of economists say. Republicans and Independants and Hillraisers----please don't vote for this guy!
Obama the panderer. The repubs got you where it hurts...

LOL.  I swear, when I am having a bad day, I can always count on the comedy of FR to pick me up.  First Read - Where to dense come to play.
Another example of Obama treating us like adults and trying to think about a difficult situation with clarity and thoughtfulness as opposed to politics and pandering.

than you
