For Tim, the generosity of West NYS

Posted: Sunday, June 15, 2008 4:20 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Rehema Ellis and Patrice Fletcher
WEST SENECA, N.Y. -- Today, as we did liveshots here from the park named for our beloved Tim Russert, a steady stream of people dropped by to leave flowers in remembrance of Tim, and well wishes for our NBC crew of six.

At one point, the owner of the Red Brick Inn down the street drove up in his catering truck.  He offered us the use of the restaurant's bathroom facilities and left us with a stack of menus.

VIDEO: Byron W. Brown, mayor of Buffalo, N.Y., discusses the impact Tim Russert had on his hometown.

Soon after, a West Seneca fireman showed up in a pumper truck with six barbecue chicken dinners from his department's Father's Day celebration. Then another man, who would only give us his first name, Steve, showed up with coffee and doughnuts. A few minutes later, Steve's wife brought us cold Gatorade on this 80-degree day.

It seems that Buffalo wants to make sure that Tim's NBC family is taken care of. We are the beneficiaries of their affection for him.

After videotaping people leaving flowers, flags and notes, our cameraman Steve Delmonte, said the mourners treated him like family.

"I feel like I'm an ambassador for NBC," Steve said. We told him that that's exactly what he is. It's what we all are -- stand-ins, here in Buffalo, for the man they call "Timmy."

You were the best in journalism, Tim; and you will be missed very much both as a journalist, and as a great human being.  God bless.
All of you at NBC have done yourselves proud in paying tribute and honor to Tim Russert. It is safe to say he would be proud of all of you.

It was heartbreaking to watch so many struggle to pay tribute and yet keep your composure too.

I would like to thank all of you, for sharing with us your love and deep affection for this wonderful man who was also a magnificent human being. May he rest in peace.

Keith, you did a fantastic job on Friday night and I want you to realize how much your efforts were appreciated, it was not an easy undertaking.
Mr. Russert was a wonderful newsman.  He will be sorely missed.  Unfortunately, some of his "students", Olbermann in particular, need to learn fairness and balance the way Russert did.
This nation has lost one of the very few honest brokers in your profession, FR. He truly represented fair and balanced reporting, not many journalist can hold a candle to him.  Tim, you will sorely be missed!
While we are all sad for Tim's family, we are every bit as sad for his family at NBC. You guys are dealing with a devastating blow. I'm glad to hear that people are treating you with such kindness.
I am from Buffalo, currently in Chicago working for Senator Obama. It does not surprise me. Buffalo people are the best folks out there. That's why we're so proud of Timmy. He represented the heart and soul of our people and our city.
Nice story.  There's nothing bitter about that part of America.
STAND-INS FOR THE MAN CALLED 'TIMMY'

The comments from Mr. Russert's colleagues, from every facet of the media, as well as, those of us whom they are meant to serve, made it clear that there is indeed an empty, honest interviewer's chair, a gaping hole of fairness, an absence at the head of the ethical moderator's table Sunday mornings on 'Meet The Press', as well as, the entire week of political news.

Please, those of you who occupy the domain known as the American media, step up, and step into his shoes.

Please perform your duty in an honorable way, free from salacity, and bias. As your mentor, Russert left a great legacy for you to follow.

Do Timmy proud!

Yes You Can!

Sundays will never be the same again..The nation is in mourning for our political hero
God Bless All Of You..Tim's Family and Staff at msnbc
May His Spirit Give Us Strength
Tim will always be in our hearts forever.  He always carried the torch for our great town and he will be sadly missed by all in Buffalo!
I believe that Tim, although we never met, was the epitome of the "American Dream".  His intelligence, his wit, his earthiness, hard work ethos, and, most of all, his devotion to his friends and family, illustrate the best in all of us.  His voice will be sorely missed.
I know what it is like to lose a family member suddenly and unexpectedly, so my genuine heartfelt sympathy and prayers go to his family and friends in this extremely difficult time.  Thank God that he got to live his dream, and live happily.  What a blessing it must have been to know him, and my heart aches for those who loved him.
Many Canadians also held Tim Russert in high esteem...he will be missed
What a beautiful anecdote to share with us.

I have been watching the tributes all weekend and I have to say that I am still in shock.  It doesn't seem real yet.  If I feel this way, never having met the man (but having him over everyday on "Morning Joe" or on Sundays) I can only imagine what you all are feeling.

I wonder why the really great ones are taken always too soon.

How will I know it's Sunday without Tim?
Nobody can replace Tim Russert.  He was one-of-a-kind.  I would always look for his report on MSNBC or NCB news immediately after any political event for his impressions.  He was the most believable voice on TV news for me.  I will miss him.  It is extremely sad that he has died so young.  He will be missed !

Dear Mr. Todd:
I am a mom of 2 girls first, a political junkie next
and I pay for the house and gas with a job at a non profit, and on Sundays it was MTP. I have to tell you that your "shatteredness" came through my television screen and I just felt like we all needed to hug you at that moment. To me, I think you are the heir to Tim's throne, I don't know if your bosses see it that way, but the folks out in "what a country" do. I hope that my second career is in broadcasting somehow somewhere, and I hope our paths cross. I ran for State Senate in NY and am now doing media,  I was also Mario Cuomo's county coordinator in 94(wish he wouldn't have run, but I love him) so I felt kind of a connection to Tim for a long time. I hope you and your family are doing well and I hope on this father's day that we will never forget, that we will always remember Tim. I thank you for your work and hope that you stay true to who you are.
We are so very saddened, as many others are, of Tim's sudden death.  We feel as if we have lost a family member.  We welcomed him in our home every Sunday morning for Meet The Press and eagerly awaited his comments on political issues and candidates.  His family and the world are at loss now.  Our sincere condolences are with his family.  Their loss is the greatest, but he will be sorely missed by many.  We weep for the loss of this intelligent, caring humitarian.  Look up "Proud American" in the dictionary, and there is Tim's photo.  He was one in a million.  We miss you Tim and always will.
Father’s Day this year is poignant for a number of reasons. Tim Russert died Friday.
Remembering a news commentator on Father’s Day may seem trivial. However, Tim was more than just a news moderator. I never personally met him; but every Sunday morning he was a welcome guest in my home. He was a good friend. He was one of the last people in network news that you could trust. More than that, when this country was going through 9-11, or any other crisis, his investigative reporting was who the country turned to navigate that crisis.
On his Sunday morning show, politicians from both sides of the political spectrum were held accountable. It is a tribute to him that there were so much worldwide expressions of condolences for him; all held him in high esteem.
Yet, his most endearing memory was the special relationship he had with his father, Big Russ, and with his son Luke. He wrote two books about the special relationship between him and his father; “Wisdom of our Fathers” and “Big Russ and Me”. Both were New York Times best sellers; true windows into the special relationship he had with his father and son.
Tim was the kind of guy that would be equally comfortable having a beer at the local bar, and talking with presidents and royalty. And he would be equally accepted in both groups. He loved his family most of all. This is a very rare quality indeed.
He will be sorely missed.
It's still hard to believe he's gone.  Everytime I see the words "Tim Russert died," I shudder.  I can't imagine what it's like for those of you at NBC.  The world is a sadder place without him.

God bless.
My heart goes out to Tim Russert's family and colleagues, who also were his family.  He was such a brilliant and enthusiastic journalist.  I ALWAYS watched him on Sunday mornings and started to watch his Saturday show on MSNBC. I feel robbed.....I was so looking forward to having him walk us through this historical election.  I loved his childlike enthusiasm.  I am in shock and feel like the country has lost the best.  God bless his soul and his family.  Who can replace him?
More proof of what a great community Buffalo is.  RIP Tim Russert.
The best way to honor Tim Russert, I believe, is for the younger generation of journalists at NBC, strive to become like him. Do your job, work hard at your craft, do the things you have to do to advance your career, but look out for your family, your friends, and the people you serve. I cant wait until Meet the Press choses its new moderator. Big shoes to fill, but hopefully they bring their own.
Being from N.Y and not far from where Tim grew up I can say one thing, he set the standard of what a newsman and reporter should be .Many could take a very good lesson from his style of reporting always fair and honest never letting his personel thoughts interfer with what he was reporting on,he will be sorly missed for his kind come along very seldem in the news business,he was indeed true to his calling.
The pride in a home town hero can be great.  For someone like Tim Russert, the pride that he never showed is well deserved.  For myself, I am glad to have watched him and wish he was around longer.  As many have said, he will be missed.  I know that I will.
Go Bills!

RIP Tim.
WHEN ASKED BY A FRIEND, "WHAT I THOUGHT OF TIM RUSSERT?" THE FIRST THING COMING TO MIND WAS THAT HE WAS "THE BEN FRANKLIN OF NEWS", AND I THINK THAT IS THE WAY I WILL REMEMBER HIM!
