First thoughts: Remembering Tim

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** Remembering Tim: The three of us here -- like so many other folks at NBC and across Washington -- idolized Tim Russert. We have a recent memory of him that for us means the world: Tim had Wizards-Cavs playoff tickets, and he invited us to come to the game with him. We leapt at the opportunity. The three of us are avid sports fans, but it was also a chance to hang out with our friend, our leader, and our mentor. Watching a game with him was exciting -- everyone was shouting out at him, thanking him for his work with Meet the Press, asking him who was going to win the Clinton-Obama contest, you name it. Watching him watch the game was a blast, too. He was just so excited to see the Wizards but also to see LeBron. He was one of those good sports fans who appreciated great play. But the highlight of the night was heading to the bar with him. We got to do what everyone this weekend said made Tim seem so real to folks that didn't know him: We got to have a beer with him -- actually two. And we just BS’ed with the guy (mostly about hoops, not politics) as if we were buddies for a long time. It's what makes us feel so lucky that we had even a few private moments. The thing with Tim is that everyone in this bureau has similar memories of him.

VIDEO: A look at those who shared memories of the host of NBC's "Meet the Press," Tim Russert, who died suddenly from a heart attack.

*** WWRD: It doesn't feel right that we have to work today because, frankly, we worked for Tim. We wanted to impress him -- give him that nugget that would make say, "wow," and then immediately trigger an idea in his head for examining something in a way we hadn't thought of yet. So forgive us this week if we don't seem to have a lot to say. It's never going to be the same. One thing we do know is that What Would Russert Do will be guiding us, and many others as well.

*** The long pause: It’s not surprising that everything here paused after Tim Russert’s sudden death. But it says something about the man that everything seemed to have paused even on the campaign trail. Sure, there was an occasional email here or there that hit McCain or Obama, but one could sense that there was passion lacking in those email blasts. And that's not such a bad thing.

VIDEO: NBC's Andrea Mitchell and Chuck Todd talk about the presidential race and the candidates' chances of winning toss-up states.

*** Michigan here we come: Kicking off the second week of his “Change That Works for You” tour, Obama spends today and tomorrow in Michigan. Not only is Michigan the first state where he has spent more than one day on this tour, but it's also now the first battleground state he's returning to since he began to act like the presumptive nominee. The reason: Given the fact that he didn’t really campaign in the state due to the primary calendar mess -- as well as the political mess in Detroit -- Michigan is one of McCain’s best chances to turn a blue state red. Obama has a very realistic path to 270 that doesn't include Ohio AND Florida, but he doesn't have a realistic path if he somehow loses Ohio, Florida, AND Michigan. The Michigan GOP has unveiled a Web video asking Obama this question: What took you so long from campaigning in the state?

*** On the trail: McCain is in Texas, where he holds two fundraisers in Dallas. Obama, as mentioned above, campaigns in Michigan, where he starts his day with an event in Flint and concludes it with a rally in Detroit.

There are really no words that can express what we all feel.  We've all lost a good friend.  One thing that saddens me is that he won't be here to share the rest of the election with us.  He was so aware of what an historic election this is.
I too loved Tim Russert...I always looked forward to hearing what he said on anything...I will miss him dearly.
My condoloences to you guys.  I must admit: I spent the better part of the weekend watching the coverage on MSNBC.
I had watched Meet the Press religiously on on Sundays and I feel a real sense of loss.  As a fellow Catholic, I guess I'll start going to church more often now that I won't have Tim Russert on Meet the Press as my Sunday morning ritual... I think Tim would approve.
Hang in there and make Tim proud! We depend on your reporting.
Best wishes to you all, I'm sure the loss is considerable.

WWRD?  He'd want you all to carry on, as he would have.

Our condolences on the NBC and Mr. Russert's family's tremendous loss.
Tim would want you to do your best at all times. To be like him, fair, nonjudgemental, he truly gave meaning to fair and balanced, yet tough.
We looked to him to explain the nuances of politics and to see the bigger picture, yet one seldom got a sense he sided with one opinion or another.
Recently, when Sen Obama got the nomination, he was excited and kept saying how it was a historic night.  He was so looking forward to the election season and we sorely will miss his perceptions and observations.   Please try, at all times to honor his faith in you and keep us informed without predjuice or judgement.

To all of you at FR, my deepest sympathy for your great loss.

GO GET 'EM!
Dear Chuck Todd,

I didn't realize until this past weekend that it was Tim Russert who hired you. I'm glad that so many of us here sent little posts to you during the primaries, thanking you for not only your professionalism, but more importantly, your dependability as well in every report you gave us, whether it was here or on one of MSNBC's programs.

I'm glad Tim got to see these posts. He must have been very proud of not only you, but himself, for recognizing the talent you had to offer us all.

My deepest sympathies to you and everyone at First Read and NBC. From what everyone has been saying, Tim was an extraordinary boss and an extraordinary person.
My condolences guys! I know he was probbly extremely of you guys for all the great work you do.
To Chuck and staff at First Read:

Take your time, mourn. We will wait for you.
"The Michigan GOP has unveiled a Web video asking Obama this question: What took you so long from campaigning in the state?"

How about the fact that the Democratic party made him promise that he wouldn't?

Dumbest question ever?
I grew up in upstate New York about 1 1/2 hours south of Buffalo NY.  My Dad loved and watched Tim faithfully.  My Dad has always said Tim knew how the average Joe felt and what questions we wanted asked of candidates to help us figure out what the person was really about.  At the ripe old age of 38, I have finally become engaged into the politic scene due to Barack Obama and his energy.  With that being said, I watched and waited to hear Tim's thoughts, analysis and questions of this years candidates.  I can't imagine not having him to turn to to get down to the "meat and potatoes" of what Barack Obama and John McCain are really about.  Who in the news media can present themselves as neutral and fair for both sides?  I can't think of one.  I am truly saddened that I do not have our "Father of Political Awareness" Tim to help inform me of what the differences are and what us everyday people want to have asked in order to form the right decision.  My Dad grieves, the people of Buffalo grieve, the team from NBC/MSNBC grieve, the entire American public grieve, because he made us all feel like we were a member of his family and vice versa.  I can not imagine this political season without Tim.  He is truly missed and I can only imagine what he will be saying when he watches this fall unfold from heaven.  What a great sideline to watch from.
rest in peace Tim. You will be greatly missed. My condolescenes to his wife, son, father and his nbc family.
We cried along with you this weekend. There is no other journalist we will mourn like him. Though you have lost your leader and it will be most difficult, please continue the great and outstanding job you have been doing, never before have we felt a news team such a part of our daily lives. Our most heartfelt condolences to all of you.
Tim was, for the politically inclined, our Sunday preacher. I don't think he meant to keep us from church, being a religous man, but he offered something special that many of us yearned for.

I have to say, that unless Tim Russert said it or confirmed it, I didn't believe it. Many times, we would hear things and I would check the MSNBC web site to see if Tim had commented. If not, it wasn't true until he said so.

I'm sure the loss for his family and the NBC/MSNBC  team is much greater than we can ever imagine, and for them, I offer my deepest sympathies. He will be so missed, but with us every day.

I'm so sorry he will miss this historic election, can't we all imagine him with that dry erase board? 269 to 269 might have been his dream scenario, though I like to believe that he would have been incredibly proud of our nation electing the first African American to the presidency. I'm sure he'll be up there as a guardian angel though, watching over his son, his wife, his dad, and the nation he was so proud of.

Hey guys, Chuck, Andrea, Olberman . . . all of you . . .!

I really feel for you guys.  Watching you on Friday and over the weekend made me tear-up quite a bit.  And frankly I feel a sense of hopelessness too:  Who will I watch to get to the real issues especially with this historic election year upon us?  I am deeply saddened

But . . .

There was something Tim said a week or two ago, something to the effect that "if we could cover just the issues; it's like night and day where these candidates stand on the issues.  We should report on just the issues, not all of these rumors and viral e-mail messages.  Wouldn't it be something for us to take up that challenge?  The public would be educated on the real facts not hear-say.  Wouldn't it be something for us to take up that challenge?"

Yes it would be something.  The GOP would love to muddy the clear water of the issues this year, with rumors and tenuous associations which have NOTHING to do with the candidate or accurately assess their potential prowess as the leader of the free world.

Do Tim Proud guys.  Outshine the other networks.  His  spirit is STILL there!  He is WITHIN you guys!  Especially you Chuck: He was you mentor.  I'll have my web pages and channel locked onto you guys until the election.  Let's do this for TIM!!!
Tim you were the best. So thoughtful and human that I enjoyed and watched every time you were on the air.  Words can not express the joy and feelings you gave to the people who watched you.  I will miss you dearly and hope some one of your calibre takes your job to make it meaningful and human.
My Condoloences to the NBC Family.  Tim Russert and Meet the press was my favorite morning show! I'll miss hearing his insight.
My deepest condolences.  The loss of Mr. Russert is staggering.  As others,  I've watched him steadily for over 20 years.  To see the chair empty on sunday morning was saddening!!!!  To be a bit selfish,  I am jealous that you've had the pleasure of having a beer with him.  I would have paid anything to do that!!

Keep doing what you do in honor of Tim.  May you all find solice in the fact that he is in gods hands now!!

Have a great day

I really will miss Tim Russert. When Tim was a part of a political broadcast team—I breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that the coverage would complete and fair. I could not wait until Sunday morning to watch him on Meet the Press.

Chris, Keith, Chuckie T, Brian, Tom, Andrea—You all do good work—I want you continue to carry on his legacy.

Chuck Todd....I pray that you will be the one to carry the torch going forward.  You and Tim shared a journalism style that is unmatched anywhere.  In today's world of sensationalism, we need a down to earth representative for the people of America.  Do your boss proud.....
The wind has left all of our sais with his passing, but I know the loss is magnified for you guys having lost your field marshal.  WWRD?  As chosen members of Russert's Army, I think you already know the answer...go get'em!
What is politics without Tim Russert? Tim was one of the few politicos who was fair AND factual. Politcs brought such joy to him, and he transmitted that joy to others. I am pretty much a first-timer to politics having never cared much about it until this election. Tim was my favorite politico on NBC/MSNBC. He will be missed.

It's great to know he was such a beloved boss, colleague, father and friend. All of you were truly blessed to work with him. I believe Tim would want each of you to take the ball and carry it forward in his tradition of fairness and balance. It will be tough, I know.

I wish Tim could have stuck around for the outcome of the general election. Then again, looking down from heaven, he already knows the results, doesn't he?

May God bless the Russert family and everyone at NBC/MSNBC.
We not only lost one of the best, if not the best political journalist, we also lost a champion of political accountability...but for Tim Russert, the corruption, hypocracy, and wastefulness in Washington DC would not have been exposed in the way he did.  We lost something bigger than the standard-bearer of responsible, meaningful, and just great journalism.

As to the news of the day, Obama will win Michigan, plain and simple.
I still can't believe that Tim is gone. I never knew it before, but I loved him . . . he will be missed.
Tim Russert was a real journalist.  A journalist full of integrity who searched for the truth. Tim was tough but fair.  He treated all of his guests the same.  He didn’t show any bias or favoritism.

Tim will be missed by all of us, especially us viewers who waited for him every Sunday morning.
I can't imagine how you carry on, though I know that Tim is up in heaven saying "come on guys, get on with it!"

Somehow, none of this is important to me right now.  Tim Russert is someone that I would have loved to know personally.

That picture of his son, touching Tim's chair on Meet The Press, made me cry.  How lucky Luke was to have Tim as a father.  I didn't have one that I could be proud of, and I envy those who do.

The election will not be as much fun.  I will so miss Tim's palpable excitement.  And this year to not have him is a tragedy.

Thanks for continuing to do your jobs.  It must be so difficult.
My mother told me this weekend that I had to “snap out of it” all I did this weekend was cry because now I don’t know who to trust with the “political truth.” Do we have to have this election?

I know I am being selfish but I can’t imagine this world being without Tim Russert.

God will bless your family Tim and God blessed you.

I could not understand why I was so saddened and felt such grief for a man I had never met. Tim Russert's death hit me like a ton of bricks and I spent a great deal of the weekend in tears over his untimely death. It was like I had lost a member of my own family. Then it hit me. Tim Russert WAS a member of my family. I invited him into my home every Sunday with Meet The Press and he always arrived, on time, eager, prepared, intelligient, respectful. I looked forward to his insight and thoughful, yet, at times, tough questions because I knew I could count on Tim to ask the questions I wanted to ask. He was so excited about this upcoming election and being a witness to history being made; I cannot imagine going through this election cycle without him. This should be an eye opener to the other journialist out there. Tim Russert was honest, direct, fair, and dedicated to the process without every interjecting his own personal opinions. He reported the straight facts and was only concerned with the issues. Period. That's why he was respected. That's why people not only took him into their homes, but they also took him into their hearts. We have yet to begin to feel the loss of Tim Russert. It will be felt greatly come November.
I know of no other journalist who has affected this way in my lifetime. Peace be with you Tim.
Chuck, Mark, and Domenico,

Please know that we hurt, deeply, right along with you.

The post that came up yesterday at about 4:45, was not expected. I took the opportunity, from the lack of articles this weekend, (as was expected, out of respect, and a demonstration of how devastated you all are), to catch up with my FR reading.

It was good to be brought along to Buffalo with you, Tim's extended family, through the article late Sunday afternoon.

Take it easy this week. We understand.

We loved Timmy too. We love you all as well.
My condolences to Mr. Russerts' family and all those who knew and worked with him.
He was a man who lived his life with grace.
Tim Russert was wonderful and Meet the Press was our favorite show on Sunday mornings. So, so sad to hear of the tragedy and have been tuning in all weekend to hear remembrances and memorials. Condolences to all.
As we all mourn the death of Mr. Russert, it is my prayer that the strength and courage of God continue to guide his family in their time of bereavement.
God Bless Tim and his family, I LOVED listening to him always, he was always extremely fair and unbiased and that is the best thing anyone can say about a journalist or political analyst.  You will be missed.
I was so in shock from the sudden death of this wonderful inspiration, Tim Russert and my deepest sympathy to his family and the NBC family. I am English and was devasted by the death of dear Princess Diana - Tim's passing had the same impact on me, and I am sure millions of other people.  No matter what walks of life we come from, Tim had such a unique ability of making us ALL understand him, and what an absolute pleasure it was to see his son this morning - who is obviously going to follow in his father's footsteps - what an inspiration - his father would have been so very proud of him.  I wish you all the very best. . .
Chuck, Mark, Domenico and the rest of the NBC/MSNBC family- Please take your time and mourn your friend, mentor, boss and colleague. For those of us not lucky enough to have known Mr. Russert, this was quite a blow so it is hard to fully comprehend the loss felt by all of you. You would do yourselves a disservice, not to mention the man himself, if you didn't take the time to truly reflect and honor him. As posted above, we will all be here waiting for you.

I always felt such a kinship to Tim Russert, even though I'm a white, female Lutheran from mid Ohio. Not a lot in common with this gentleman from Buffalo, NY, other than the fact that I felt Mr. Russert was my counterpart in regards to his enthusiasm for everything political. I am like a kid at Christmas when it comes to this election and I always felt that same passion from Mr. Russert. My family has constantly compared me to him, saying that if you put the 2 of us in a room together, we would stay their for days just hashing and rehashing every aspect of this special election cycle.

I know that there is no one to replace this gentle soul and I think that is a testament also to the kind of man he was. I will miss him but I think that everyone who had the honor and privilege to work with him will carry on in his name. Take the lessons you learned from him and carry on and we will honor all that he was. God bless you, his wife, his son and his father.
I will always remember where I was when I heard the news that Tim Russert was gone. What an instution!!! What a man!!

He had faith for all of us when we felt this country wasn't worth much, and he always said "What a Country"
How could anybody not have faith that our country was worth fighting for when he uttered those words??

I, like so many was surprised that his death hit me so hard. I still can't believe it.

He will be missed in this household. The elections and this country will never be the same.

God Speed Tim Russert !!
What a country!!!
We are so sorry that he has passed and hurt for those who knew him personally. I can only imagine the impact he had on your lives when just by watching the show weekly he had a big impact on ours.

We appreciate the celebration of his life this weekend. I woke up this morning thinking that he is still gone, it's unbelievable. We are able to see funeral or memorial services televised for Presidents and other important people. It seems that an event like that for Tim would be fitting. It seems that the good ones really do go so early.
Sundays will not be the same. I keep asking myself, how am I going to really know what is going on in politics? I always felt better when I heard Tim Russert gives his input. I am sure that he was a great teacher, mentor and I am sure you ALL will do the best. My condolences to his wife, son, father and his TV family. Make him proud.
I think that we all feel that we know Tim Russert a little now - and that we were all somehow his friend.  And how we will miss him - his intelligence, his curiousity, his humour and his humanity.

He has gone home - but he leaves behind his family at NBC and MSNBC to carry on his work.  And he leaves his wife, son, father, sisters and all his extended family and friends his legacy of love.

Thoughts are will the three of you guys (thanks for sharing some of your memories) and all of the NBC and MSNBC family.

God Bless
My deepest sympathies to all of the NBC family and most especially to Tim's wife, son, father and other family members.

Tim was welcomed into our homes and our hearts as a trusted friend. It is impossible to imagine Sunday mornings and the upcoming elections without him guiding us through. I truly feel we have lost a National Treasure. I mourn his loss and will miss him dearly.
Rest in Peace, Tim.
Although nine years older than Tim Russert, I grew up two bolcks from where he found his roots in South Buffalo.  My dad knew his dad.  This is a real hard blow for me and all South Buffalonians.  When he talked about his roots being the foundation for his values, both in his family and professional life, we understood.  We have lost a brother.
Chuck, Mark & Domenico,

Take some time to grieve this week.....everyone understands.

But after this week, it is time to "go get 'em".

<smile>
Its interesting to see the Michigan GOP is as silly as the GOP in general.

First Read guys. It won't be the same - got it. As you've seen from the out-pouring of sympathy, Tim will be missed by many, and naturally by you guys more so than those of us who only knew him via the TV screen. But that said, the news isn't stopping. Consider this a well-intentioned kick in the butt. Mourn, grieve, but remember you do have responsibilities beyond the internal dynamics of the newsroom.
I cried when I saw the breaking headline on Friday. My first thought was that I wouldn't want to watch or read about politics ever again. I really don't understand politics too well, and Russert was like a guide to me. I really didn't want to watch Meet The Press this week, but I forced myself to, I don't know why, just to close out that story in my mind, I guess. Television is a weird thing, the viewers don't really know these people, yet we think we do. Whenever I watched MTP I always paid more attention to the personalities, maybe, than to the content. Sometimes I liked TIm Russert and sometimes I was mad at him. I used to wonder why he didn't talk about his mother, and I disliked his obsession with sports, like I would if he were a friend of mine. I think I will give politics a rest for awhile. I feel surprisingly shaken up. My best to all of you at NBC.
I never met the man but feel like I lost a buddy. His enthusiasim for life, his work and his family was truly remarkable to see. He has made me aware of my own relationship with my son and how much it matters to do the right thing and be there.  Sunday mornings will be tough but someone will step in and carry the tourch and always always we will remember Tim.
God Bless Tim and his family.
If you wish to see one of Tim's last great moments go to the web cite for Randolph-Macon College where he was the commencement speaker on May 31. He is and was nothing but class. rmc.edu
Wow! Did you see that clip of Matt Lauer interviewing Luke Russert?  What an intelligent and well adjusted young man. He pulled through a difficult interview at a difficult time with flying colors. A true chip off the old block.  I hope NBC is smart enough to put Luke through law school and then put him in the NBC newsroom someday soon! He has that special personality and journalistic gift, no doubt from both his parents.
Wonderful job by the NBC family (all networks, really) honoring Tim this past weekend.  Good luck to all of Tim's family & friends overcoming this difficult period.  "Go Bills!  What a country!"
My condolences go out to the family of Tim including his wife, son, and his father along with the NBC family. What a great loss this has been for the country as it was a ritual to watch Meet the Press every Sunday and grasp the ideas that Tim express to his guest every Sunday. He was so full of knowledge and earger to share it with the viewers.
He has left a void in the News world and would always be thought of as a fair minded person that wanted to get the message across to his veiwers that we so craved for.
Tim Russert was one of the better angels here on earth.
