Obama to visit Iraq, Afghanistan

Posted: Monday, June 16, 2008 1:41 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
Obama said today the campaign would be making an announcement as to when, but he said he he wanted to visit both Iraq and Afghanistan before the election in November.

"I told him that I look forward to seeing him in Baghdad," Obama said of his conversation with Iraq’s foreign minister, Hoshyar Zebari. "You know, we'll make an announcement about that [as to when], but as I said, I'm interested in visiting Iraq and Afghanistan before the election."

VIDEO: A Race for the White House panel debates: Are Americans more patient about progress in Iraq?

Obama spoke briefly (about 10 minutes) with reporters about his telephone conversation with Zebari. He said he was encouraged by the progress made in reducing the violence in Iraq, but believed troops should be withdrawn, and they should do so carefully.

Obama also told Zebari, he said, that Congress should be involved in any negotiations regarding a Status of Forces agreement with Iraq. He suggested it may be better to wait until the next administration to negotiate such an agreement.

Asked by NBC's Lee Cowan if a timetable for the status of forces agreement was discussed, Obama said, "Well he, the foreign minister, had presented a letter requesting an extension of the UN resolution until the end of this year. So that’s a six-month extension.

"Obviously we can't have U.S. forces operating on the ground in iraq without some sort of agreemnt, either a further extension of the U.N. resolution or some sort of Status of Forces agreement, some strategic framework agreement. As I said before, my concern is that the Bush administration--in a weakened state politically--ends up trying to rush an agreement that in some ways might be binding to the next administration, whether it was my administration or Sen. McCain's administration.

"The foreign minister agreed that the next administration should not be bound by an agreement that’s currently made, but I think the only way to assure that is to make sure that there is strong bipartisan support, that Congress is involved, that the American people know the outlines of this agreement, and my concern is that if the Bush administration negotiates, as it currently has, and given that we're entering into the heat of political season that we're probably better off not trying to complete a hard and fast agreement before the next administration takes office, but I think obviously these conversations have to continue. As I said my No. 1 priority is making sure that we don’t have a situation in which us troops on the ground are somehow vulnerable to, are made more vulnerable, because there is a lack of a clear mandate."

Will Obama be reporing back to Central Command?
Diane from Illinois

If you want to vote for a racist, then by all means do so.

------------------------------------------------------
Having a white mother and being raised by his white grandparents, where, on earth, do you get that Obama is racist? That's absurd. Perhaps YOU are the one that is racist???????

--------------

Hmmm. Just what type of people raise racists Diane? I'll just sit back and wait for your answer.

Or, perhaps Barack learned it on his own?
"requesting an extension of the UN resolution" Has Obama like so much of the rest of the left called this "an illegal war"?

"Bush administration--in a weakened state politically"

yes because congress' approval ratings are even lower.
About time!!!! For someone who heads the sub-committee on foreign affairs - Afghanistan - please take a break from campaigning and actually do the job you were elected to do!
he admits:  we're making progress.   time to leave?!   this guy is a loser!   NObama '08
I hope that he will not wear himself out. I think sleep and rest would be important and it seems to me that the man never stops. SAying that, I do think a genius like Obama can think clearly when he sees the whole picture. Do you know that intelligence made a one page brief on this state and presented it to Bush to read. As the press questioned him, it was known that he had not bothered to read the breif. I don't think Bush means to be stupid but he is stupid. We might as well get a bonfire and set our money on fire for all the good that this war is doing us. Why don't the American people care anymore. I am shocked that people would support McCain. What is their problem?
Obama:

Please hire Averell 'Ace' Smith from the Clinton campaign

He was Hillary's 'stopper', who helped win California and Texas (and I think was sent to NC)

He was supposed to be a real field organizer and an opposition researcher.

Hire him, on reputation alone

Obama/Biden '08
Obama/Edwards '08

Either would be GREAT
Take your pick
How can anyone not read the last paragraph of this post and not feel an enormous sense of relief at the return of competency to our government. I am so relieved that Obama is already laying the groundwork for the transition of the Presidency. I feel in Obama we have rational, open, law-abiding, democracy-loving, intelligent LEADER for a change. Our long national nightmare is almost over.
Nobama wrote this in response to my wondering why McCain calls himself a foreign policy expert but doesn't know the difference between Sunnis and Shiias:  "Big Picture: We'll be waiting for the history lesson from you to explain the difference to us.   Could it be he "slipped"?"
-----
Nobama, heck of a slope if he slipped.  Considering that he said it FOUR times over THREE weeks.  Try a different argument because the "slip" one has anybody with half a brain laughing.   Here's the problem: there are one of two options.  Either 1) he knows the difference and was purposefully lying FOUR times over THREE weeks in a Bushian attempt to conflate Al Qaeda and Iraq or 2) FIVE YEARS after the war in Iraq started, he didn't know the difference between the US equivalent of Protestants and Catholics.  Either way, if his calling card is foreign policy, he FAILED MISERABLY.  If you can spin it otherwise, I'll look forward to another laugh.
Zebari went over Dubyah's head, while George is on his farewell tour in Europe, and took the opportunity to consult with McCain, and Obama.

However, the only policy being reported out of these conversations, is that Obama will not fly by the seat of his, or McCain's , or Dubya's pants. He will proceed, only, with the blessing of Congress, in accordance with the Constitution! You have got to love that, if you're a patriot!

Barack put Zebari on notice. There's a new sheriff in town. A good, beneficent, and law abiding sheriff!

Whoa!
Nice to see Obama is doing what John McCain tells him to do. Barack will get many, many more opportunities to listen to McCain when John is President next year. And, who knows, maybe someday, way off into the future, Barack could be President himself.
My advice to Barack, DO NOT GO WITH JOHNNY! I would not trust him with ANYTHING!!!! Especially with all of the Blackwater, KBR, and all of the guns for hire that are over there, with no jurisdiction.
Dean from Waterbury wrote earlier the following: "A memo to ALL Clinton voters:  I've been saying this for months but we can NOT weaken now. A vote for Obama would be to countenance the Clinton-hating media aka, MSNBC. Please vote for McCain this fall.  For futher info go to Clintons4McCain website."
-------------------------
Dean, vote for whomever you want.  But you're clearly not basing your vote on the issues because McCain is 180 different from Clinton on almost everything.  Instead, you're basing it on some deep-seated and misdirected spite.  Hell of a way to treat your duty as a citizen by using your vote as playground payback.   I thought one had to be 18 years old to vote...

Obama is a Wise man...why is McCain not shouting to have the Bush administration at least allow Congressional Oversight of the Status of Forces agreement!!??!!
Get them of Iraq, let Iraq stand or fall on its own, and redeploy to Afghanistan to finish up that job...my good friend is deployed there, and he said its no different from when they first arrived...taliban is all over the place, and only a small fraction of the country is actually under democratic control.  He also said that country is sitting on its hands because we keep throwing more good money after bad at them, they don't need to do their own rebuilding because we're there to protect them, and this is the whole mentality of the people there.  Again, lets surge in Afghanistan, find Osama, kill him, and all the Taliban, and get out of there.
Barack should not go! We're going to pull out of Iraq and Afagnaistan soon when Brack is Prezidsnt, so why bother going their now? Wev'e lossed the war a long time agoo, they're is know use beating a dead house anymore.

Go Barck!!
As I said Jimmy Obama is going to surrender the American forces only John McCain a real navy man can make a real change and put a stop to the Iran nucs.  All Obama wants to do is talk talk and talk when McCain who is a real hero will take action.  When will all these stupid liberals find out what is going on in the world?  Terrorists.  Vote for John McCain and hopefully Huckabee for moral Christian America.
This was played perfectly... Obama did it on his schedule, not McCain's. McHot-Head will take a shot at him on this, and to no avail... It's only a matter of time before McCain pops his top because he will not be able to get control of the pace of this election. Obama is rolling the stones and McCain can only follow - or get out of the way.

Obama '08
So now Obama has changed his tune yet again. First it was Obama leading an immediate unilateral withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Now, it must be done carefully, and through the Congress. This Obama character is a first class CYA-ist. What's remarkable is that he hasn't done anything of value his entire life, and yet he still manages to contradict himself.
U.S. troops on the ground, not "us troops on the ground."
Hit McCain where he's suppose to be strong.

StageKid: A Dissertation on Disillusionment: http://www.stagekid.com
Brilliant; another McCain talking point is nullified by Obama.

Keep reaching, Repubs, keep reaching.
Obama believed troops should be withdrawn, and they should do so carefully not to mention Obama suggested it may be better to wait until the next administration to negotiate such an agreement. That is so indicative of good judgment. Stating that agreement in some ways might be binding to the next administration, whether it was my administration or Sen. McCain's administration= No fifty bases =No occupation= for the next president, Barack Obama will not occupy Iraq or 100 years = good judgment to failed Bush/ McCain trying to box America and the next  president .
Let freedom ring!
Obama, willing to go to Iraq and Afganistan.....AWESOME!

We need a man like this in charge of our great country.  He is willing to sit down and talk and go see for himself what our soldiers face each and every day they are in Iraq.  I cannot wait until January 2009.  There will certainly be 'dancing in the streets'.

Go OBAMA!
Why is Michelle Obama getting a chief of staff?  Is she responsible for keeping her from opening her mouth?  In that case, good plan.
Jen (Sent Monday, June 16, 2008 1:47 PM)

*************************************

Jen,

McCain is quoted as saying, "It's tough, in some respects to be proud of America". (The article can be found in the Huffington Post).

It's very telling how some Americans get a pass over such comments, and others are drawn, and quartered when they express what most of us, (if not all of us), have said, or felt, at one time or another.

It's called hypocritical marginalization folks.

How can you not support this guy?? he is awesome. He knows what he is talking about and he is makng sense and alreay negotiating the right way and he sees the predictament that the Bush Administration could put the next president and he is already trying to counter that.
Obama in 08 and 12
Obama mouths the words given to him by his advisors, but he really doesn't understand what he is saying.
Obama wasn't as forceful about it as I would have liked, but he at least stated up fron, "Look, under my administration, the troops WILL be leaving!" Good honesty, good sticking with his message.
I would love it if Obama took a world tour over the summer, including Iraq and Afghanistan. Many world leaders love him, so his trip would be great public relations as well as an opportunity for him to shore up his foreign relations credentials. Maybe Obama can tour Iraq and Afghanistan with reporters who travel to dangerous war areas rather than just do a tour that allows him to only see the safe areas?
Kris Stl: "How can you not support this guy??"

Let me count the ways.
Obama to Iraq? Woo-hooo!! Next, Barack will go to a bank and watch what the tellers do. That way he can say he knows something about how the economy works.
TO dusual tx:

John McCain is the reason why all the other branches of military call those in the Navy "SeaMen", and he is a disgrace to his families legacy.  His stupid a$$ gave away top secret information that led to a %500 increase in downed aircraft over N. Vietnam.  Do your research and you'll find out how much of a Benedict Arnold this guy really is.  McCain would rather put himself before country, a trait that the GOP have grown accustom too.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
About time!!!! For someone who heads the sub-committee on foreign affairs - Afghanistan - please take a break from campaigning and actually do the job you were elected to do!

Correction...Senator Obama chairs the Subcommittee on European Affairs, not the Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs (that would be Senator Kerry).
What for he already knows ALL. Its just like the lapel pin or kicking his church to the curb when the heats on your on your own just like IRAQ.
I find it amazing the number of liberals discussing military strategy. "Pull the troops from here, move the troops there." This from a group of people that wouldn't know how to take on a rowdy gang of 6th graders.
I don't get it.  It used to be We can't leave Iraq because things are bad.

Now, it is: We can't leave because things are better.

Which one is it?  Those pushing to 'Stay the Course' should volunteer for the so-called mission.
Sorry Jersey Boy but your wrong on Sen Obama's position on troop withdrawal.  He has consistently said that we should withdraw from Iraq in a way that is responsible as opposed to the irresponsible way that troops were sent there in the first place.  He has never said that they should be withdrawn immediately.  Ever.

Try listening before you post --

you are ignorant, like most neo-cons. McCain is no war hero...he got himself shot down in Vietnam, and then caught, and sat on his hands for 5 years in a prison. since he was in a prison, he did no fighting. actually, he told the viet cong whatever they wanted to know because of the torture. he graduated at the bottom of his academy.

McCain a war hero? I think not. More like a failed soilder who will use his inept military experience to get more men and women killed under his command.

McCain = failed military.

Barack The Voet (Sent Monday, June 16, 2008 2:10 PM)

Wow!!!!! I finally agree!!!
We TRULY DO have some Clinton supporters getting behind Obama. I never would have believed it but one of them finally posted something!!
What a dillweed.
Not a smart thing to do. There is nothing to learn there by seeing it with the eye. We are there illegally, and there are mercinary's (blackwater) on the scene. Not to mention mccain/bush want (no demand) that you go.
I'm really pleased Obama is going to Iraq. Deplomacy is what he is good at and how refreshing to have a leader that wants to talk instead of picking up a gun and making un-realist demands. As for the commentsabout the lapel pin and church-what a cheap inmature response! If you can't say something constructive don't waste everyones time on slime attacks!!!!!!!!!!
Jo Jo

Since you are so intent on calling Sen Obama racist  -just who is he supposed to be racist against?  African Americans or white people?  Do you have proof? I can see/hear it now:  - you posting a quote from one of his books (taken out of context of course)  - perhaps that is your proof?  Or let's see - going to Trinity Church  perhaps - and having Rev Wright as his pastor?  Or what else is there -- ah yes, the fact that Louis Farrakhan said nice things about him makes Sen Obama a racist.  Is that it?  Or perhaps you have some other little tidbit from some of the vile, vicious emails going around?

So please , tell us what makes Sen Obama a racist and who exactly he is racist against.  As Diane from Illinois so intelligently said, it's pretty hard for someone who is black, raised by a white mother and grandparents to be racist.

We're all waiting for your next smug comment - showing us some proof.

Obama '08
Actually they sat on his hands and took his elbows and tied them together and hoisted him up in the air to suspend him for hours until he would pass out but that was while he was pretending to have a broken leg .What about the other POWS what did they do to get themselves caught my post is for you chicken shit hawks who do all the talking but none of the doing.DISGRACEFUL to all who served and gave ththe last breath for you shame shame shame OBAMMA should be proud of the way you poerate

WHOA!!!!  I am for Obama because I thought he wanted to concentrate on Afghanistan, not pull out of there.  I think you got that completely wrong...if that's the case I can't possibly vote for him.  We HAVE to defeat the Taliban.  If we don't we look very weak.
OBAMA = NO MILITARY just like G BUSH
NO HE SAID IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWL then he backpedaled, like the lapel pin and talking with dictators FLIP FLOP ohh and his CHURCH, once a good church now a bad church

I agree with Dean ! We must work hard to keep the blind and deaf from electing obama. What a HUGE mistake that would be ! Clinton supporters: remember she had to back him, we don't. Go with experience, go with MCCain ! We'll have Hillary in 4 yrs
Uh-rack Uh-bam-uh is already backtracking on Uh-raq, in case you haven't noticed.  He's acknowledged the progress because of the surge and says that troops should be withdrawn, but "carefully."

Anyone want to tell me what that really means?

What are you going to do when U.S. troops are still in Iraq at the end of his first term?

I have to admit that I'm happy that he's finally going to Uh-raq and Afghan-uh-stan, though.  A little catching up will do him good.

On another note:  Did he hire Bill Cosby as a speech writer?
Dan said:

the foreign sub-committee he heads is europe. Last time I checked, Afghanistan is in the middle east and not europe. Second, try asking McCain why he has the worst attendence record in the senate. maybe  he should stop campaigning and actually show up to the senate and vote on the important issues like the gi bill. just a thought.

James,

Obama never said he will back out of Afghan. He wants to leave Iraq so we will have enough troops to go after bin laden and the taliban in afghan. he believes afghan is fighting the war in terrorism not iraq.
Obama is a idiot ! he has no plans, he is following what has already been done by others, and using their policies. He calls it change ? WHERE ? I don't see or hear anything but BS and the need to double our taxes for crap he calls change.....

No, I think I will have to vote for McCain too !
