Obama: The Gore endorsement

Posted: Tuesday, June 17, 2008 9:20 AM by Domenico Montanaro

Al Gore, NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones reports, endorsed Obama at a rally in a packed arena last night, saying it was time for the party to unite behind the Illinois senator and touching on his own experience as a presidential candidate to illustrate the idea that “elections matter.”

VIDEO: NBC's Lee Cowan reports on former Vice President Al Gore's endorsement of Senator Barack Obama for president.  The two have been talking for many months.

"In looking back over last eight years, I can tell you we have already learned one important fact since the year 2000. Take it from me elections matter,” he said. “If you think the next appointments to our Supreme Court are important, you know that elections matter. If live in city of New Orleans, you know that elections matter. If you or a member of your family are serving in active military, the National Guard or reserves, you know that elections matter. If you’re a wounded veteran, you know that elections matter.” He also said elections mattered to those facing economic hardship and those who care about food safety and even the nation’s pets, who’ve been fed tainted pet food from China.

"It is the second time that Obama has rolled out a major endorsement in Michigan, a state he did not campaign in during the primary because its election violated the party rules," the Boston Globe writes. "Last month, he appeared with 2004 vice presidential nominee John Edwards in Grand Rapids, as party leaders united behind Obama as their nominee."

The Washington Post adds, “The theme of Monday night's speeches was Democratic Party unity, with Obama, Gore and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm all vowing to bring the party back together after a hard-fought primary. But the crowd was not ready to come along. It loudly booed Granholm after she mentioned Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.), drawing a rebuke from Obama when he took the stage. ‘I want everybody here to be absolutely clear,’ he said. ‘Senator Clinton is one of the finest public servants we have in American life today. . . . She is worthy of our respect. She is worthy of our honor.’”

The New York Post writes up Patti Solis Doyle joining the Obama campaign. "Clinton insiders were surprised by the move, with many casting it as telegraphing that the New York senator won't be put on the ticket. Solis Doyle 'is the reason we lost,' said one Clinton insider, noting the campaign's profligate spending and other problems in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses, where the one-time front-runner came in third. Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee tried to quell the outrage, saying, 'Patti will be an asset and good addition to the Obama campaign.'"

Obama said he wouldn't wait until the sixth year of his presidency to sit down and meet with the auto industry. It turns out his criticism of Bush was off by three years; Bush sat down with the Detroit auto heads in 2003.

The New York Daily News frames Obama saying he'd go to Iraq as him, answering "Mac-call to visit Baghdad."

AlGore. Just another brick in the wall of Barack Obama's loony left wing agenda.
Gore is going to try to swing Tennessee to Obama's column? Gore couldn't even swing Tennessee into HIS column in 2000.
Many thanks to the unions for reinforcing the stage Gore and Obama were on last night. Al seems to have put on a few more pounds, and the stage was initially in danger of collapsing.
Solis Doyle 'is the reason we lost,' said one Clinton insider
*********************************
lol, riiight. And it had nothing to do with the flipflopping on NY Driver's Liscences in the debate days before Iowa, or the fact that many of her own team had been suggesting to skip Iowa much like Giuliani did.
Has Al Gore been declared a planet yet? He has is own gravitational field.
Obama's campaign hiring Patti Solis Doyle really does send a strong message that Clinton is not being considered for the ticket!!!!!

What a difference our country would have experienced had Al Gore won in 2000, instead of that idiot cowboy from texas.  Al Gore would have gotten Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan unlike the repugnant one who doesn't want to get him because he serves the repugnant ones better as a boogeyman to scare us with.

Al Gore wouldn't have turned a budget surplus into the biggest deficits in our history.  We'd be $4 or $5 trillion or more better off on the national debt.  Global warming wouldn't be as bad a problem and he would have pushed for better fuel mileage which would have meant cheaper gas prices now.

Al Gore endorsing Barack Obama is a good deal for helping remind the country how much better off we'd be off if we had Democrats in the White House the past 7+ years.

Go Obama 08/12!
Just another OLD TIME INSIDER, CLINTON VP and loser politician kissing butt of yet another politician, same except his skin is darker.
The more things change the more they stay the same!
The DNC machine is going to need yet more OIL to keep the Obama shoved down our throats!
NEXT DC politician?? NEXT?? Step up BO needs more to pile on he is barely keeping us from regurgitation!

I believe the timing of this endorsement is because the BUMP has been smaller than predicted. They are hoping Gore's popularity will bring around 2-5 % in the polls.

Obama('s team) is a much better strategist than anyone else on the scene right now.
The comments so far seem out of touch with the deep concerns people have about living green.Gore is admired for his stance on the envirorment.I wonder just how much time and effort those who are so quick to throw out negatives have done to help our planet? So easy to attack people sitting at a computor with only opinions and no actions! What good deeds are on your resume?
While I'm pleased that Al Gore has endorsed Obama, I remain a little disappointed that he waited until after Obama had already won the Dem primaries. It SURE WOULD HAVE HELPED if he'd expressed his support sooner!
Oh well...better late than never, I suppose...
Way to GO...The Dem's really look United...

The GOP looks like a bunch of summer reruns..

Obama'08
So let me get this straight.....

Al Gore climbs on his private jet and leaves a huge carbon footprint to fly up to Detroit, where people are losing jobs thanks to liberal policies and gives his nod to Senator Obama.

Al Gore, who lost his own state in 2000.....
Al Gore, who wins the Nobel Peace Prize, flies to Oslo, putting his baggage in a car that is not fuel efficient and leaves a huge carbon footprint......
Al Gore, the one who had the rock concerts last year that wasted fuel and leaving earth size carbon footprints for flying bands all over the world......

That Al Gore????

He should be at home making sure his son doesn't fall off the wagon again!
Right wing Limbaugh/Fox addicts that believe the Bush years have been good for America and fair to the average American are incapable of imagining the positives a Gore presidency would have had over the last seven and a hlf years.  Thank goodness the idiot and his bunch are on their way into historical ridicule.
Oh! what might have been I thought last night as I watched Al Gore's ringing endorsement.  America missed a good one seven and half years ago.

But enough of looking back, elections are about the future and I see it looking brighter every day. Sen Obama will make a fine president come November.
obama keeps pushing people to endorse him in MI. He really must be aware that he is going to lose that state. Gore has name recongition but that is about as far as that goes.
I can't believe people are making comments about Al Gore's weight. Is that really relavent? Al Gore is one of the only prominent politicians that risked his reputation to do the unpopular thing and stand up for the environment, the planet, and us. He was "going green" before it was cool and thanks to him millions of people are now more educated about this important issue than ever before.

I am happy he has endorsed Obama, I wish it had come earlier but I understand him wanting the process to work itself out, as it should. I applaud Gore for his work in politics and his work for the environment. Barack Obama and his supporters are lucky to have him in their corner.

Barack '08!
Al Gore came in rather late, but he sounded clear and strong!  The tide continues moving in the right direction and we certainly welcome him!  It is, however, discouraging to read so much garbage from these forums... One has to recognize the wonders of democracy!  Each "looney" has the same right as the next person to cast his / her vote for whoever he / she chooses.  And once all votes are counted, "the chosen one" will take the lead the whole unruly group.  More power to you, Obama!!!
jerry/corpus christi texas (Sent Tuesday, June 17, 2008 9:47 AM), are you telling us that Bush and Cheney let some liberal policies get passed.  How dare they.  And here all this time I thought the conservative republicans were in the White House.  Silly me.

Kelly Stevens.....

"AlGore. Just another brick in the wall of Barack Obama's loony left wing agenda."

My God, wake up and look at what Uncle Fluffy brings with the right wing...first he's an OLD, ANCIENT, out of touch bureacrat...Second, he's surrounded himself with such luminaries as Joe Liberman and lindsay Graham. The economy is on it's ass (thank's to the right wing) and Uncle Fluffy doesn't have one...NOT ONE, noted economist advising him. 80 % of population wants out of this sink hole war and he still dogmatically hangs on to his premise to win with honor, when he can't describe what winning means?

.....looney left wing, you say,....LOL....a better adjective for the right wing would be insane...or even better "Insane, go with McSame"
macy's has first dibs on gore.  maybe barack hussein obama can help hold his lines on thanksgiving day.
Hilldems4McCain: Although the name means nothing since the polls show that the "Hillary Women" are already moving to Obama and rejecting McCain but there is no awareness that any state is out of reach, especially one like Michigan. Obama will re-instate ALL of our delegates for the convention and since his economic policies will help us out a lot here, he will win the state. Besides, we all know that the "gas-tax holiday" that McCain proposed was a major sham and we rejected that notion overwhelmingly. We will also eject McCain as the continuation of the Bush policies.
I have to say that it isn't a surprise that the Gore endorsement comes now.  It would have been a problem before the primaries were over.  Gore does speak the truth about the current administration; what could they have done better, more efficiently and more responsibly to keep American safe and moving economically?  Plenty I am sure.
I support Senator Obama on most things and I understand that he wants to respect those who have supported Senator Clinton but saying she is great doesn't make it so for me.  I have absolutely no respect for her.  He can't erase the reality of her actons and words by praising her.  It's just not that easy.  I appreciate and support Senator Obama but I am not a blind follower that will be brainwashed by his every word.  He must also respect those of us that do not see Senator Clinton the way he does.
"Has Al Gore been declared a planet yet? He has is own gravitational field.
Carl Sagan (Sent Tuesday, June 17, 2008 9:33 AM)"

So Gore is wrong because he is liberal?  Gore is wrong because he is over-weight?  Gore is wrong because.....

The more you people take cheap shots at Gore, the more i think Gore is right about climate change.  Next people will call him a witch.

BTW, everything has a gravitational field. An atom of hydrogen....HAS ITS ONW GRAVITATIONAL FIELD.

The more I read comments that are against the democrats...the more I understand the fact that:

Republicans are 40% more likely to not have a college degree then democrats.  Look that fact up.
yep, a presidential candidate is only going to visit iraq because the old guy that always lies about the safety status of that country says so!

and if you believe that, then:

Obama is also really afraid to meet McCain face to face in a townhall setting.  He's so dynamic!
"So let me get this straight.....

All this comment does for me is point out the fact that Al Gore is right about the needs to become more green.  I think this post is trying to imply that Gore should invent Green planes before explaining to the world of idiots that don't believe climate change need green planes.  Isn't that a bit backwards?

They always say you have to spend money to make money.

Well you have to spend energy to make energy in this case.  If Al Gore wants to get his message to the world he will have to travel the world.  And the only way right now is to use the technology we have to spread it.

I hope you are not suggesting that he should have created a green jet and green cars before he explains that we NEED green jets and green cars.  If that were a valid way to do something, NASA would have said that we need to fly to the moon in a hang-glider so that we can find the data we need to build a rocket ship.
I was at the rally in Detroit last night people....I can assure you of this one thing...If the crowd there and the enthusiasm demonstrated there is an indicator at all...Michigan will go Democrat in the GE!!!!!!!

It was absolutely ELECTRIC in Joe Louis Arena!!!!!!!

I was about ten feet from the podium on the arena floor...Gore light the fire and Obama Fanned the flames!!!!!!!

The one thing that is being underestimated in this election season by the Repubs is the overwhelming desire for things to be radically different from the way our Government has been run previously. Change is going to come and it is an inevitable thing this year. It is, in a manner of speaking, going to be a political revolution. The American public is now going to make their voices heard and in a clear and precise manner. Government is going to be held accountable...Or else!
I think Obama's selection of Patti Solis Doyle as VP chief of staff sends a strong message to Hillary Clinton and her supporters that she will not be picked as VP and they should all move on and support Obama. It sends the message that the VP "carrot" is not being waved in her direction.  Al Gore is also an important asset to Obama's campaign. He was hurt terribly by the Clintons during his quest for presidency in 2000. He tried to be "his own man" to distance himself from the Clinton admin. It was not successful due to Bill Clinton's impeachment.  Gore has done so well since then. I support him in whatever he does.
I appreciated Gore finally coming out in support of Obama.  HOWEVER, I REALLY wanted to hear OBAMA'S speech directly following Gore:  Why did MSNBC (As well as CNN), cut Obama off the SECOND he started to speak?  Come on, MSNBC, I thought you were BETTER than CNN & Fox!  Don't think that would've been what Russert would've done OR been happy with!  Tim taught us to want & appreciate FAIRNESS in reporting!!!
"Thank goodness the idiot(George Bush) and his bunch are on their way into historical ridicule". Bill in the OK THAT WAS TREMENDOUS..Hilarious. You people are out here loosing your homes, barely keeping your jobs and making life decisions at the pump and you think Mcbain is the answer. He will only continue your suffering. Adding to that, the best you can come up with is Al Gore’s weight??..you childish morons …stupidity is stupid…I’m sure you voted for Buck shot George with out doubt but please do not vote for anything like that again. It’s obvious your judgment has limits. So stop making decision for America if you will...
Tommy MI

Although I respect your wishes for obama, I really don't see him carring MI. or Fl. YEs, Some of the Clinton women are going to blindly follow obama. I am one of the men who won't. He will manage to get 1/3 of the clinton voters, the rest either won't vote or will go to McCain as I am. I'm sorry but I have had enough of NO EXPERIENCE in the White House. Look what bush has done and he had more experience than obama going in. Sorry, but no. Hillary was the best bet.

Bo Weeble (Sent Tuesday, June 17, 2008 9:28 AM)"Gore is going to try to swing Tennessee to Obama's column? Gore couldn't even swing Tennessee into HIS column in 2000."

LOL, you're right, there ARE a lot of stupid people in Tennessee. Maybe they've wised up a little bit, or four years of McCain upside the head may finally get through. There are also lots of people there that voted the right way back in 2000, maybe they can talk some sense into their neighbors.
VP Gore is awesome and we thank him for his support.  VP Gore although he lost the presidential bid went on to become one of the most respected and admired men in our country and abroad.

This sends not only a signal to the world abroad but to We The People that we will once again have a USA that really does what it says and says what is means.

An America that will once again restore our standing in the world and get We The People out of this terrible RECESSION.

We The People have been ignored for the past 7 years we have been used our tax dollars used, our families are suffering, lives are continuing to be lost, our heroes are suffering

Life in America is a far distant reflection of any era in this country.

It's time for change and we thank VP Gore that he is standing in the GAP to assist with the lead.
Too Little - Too Late Obama.  I watched you at your "rallies" through the ENTIRE primary season. And every single time you mentioned Hillary Clinton, your followers "booed" and "hissed."  And what did you do???  You laughed!!!  What a punk!  All you Obama nuts who thinks he's "god's gift" need to watch the tape of when John Edwards endorsed him.  While Senator Edwards was speaking in very kind terms of Senator Clinton, the audience started booing.  The color drained from Senator Edward's face -- he was stunned!  And what did Obama due -- he laughed!
The bar must be set pretty low if some of these unpleasant comments have passed muster, e.g. HP Boston or Jerry from Texas. On the subject of civility, I suggest to Lauren from Boulder that Sen. Obama's policies are very similar to Sen. Clinton's, and he was well within his rights to suggest that booing her was not appropriate. Bad manners are not to be respected. Perhaps you do not realize that, amiable as he is, he is rather conservative and not extremely liberal. He is far to the right of Al Gore, for instance. That's how he will encourage moderate Republicans to vote for him too, and how the country may have in 2009 a President who at the very least, is quite sane. A nice change indeed.
I appreciate that Senator Obama holds Hillary Clinton in high regard as a fellow senator. I however have followed the Clinton's antics since they were in Arkansas and will never honor or respect them. They have done much damage to others and have earned my contempt over the years. My disdain for Hillary pre-dates Barack Obama and has nothing to do with him or his campaign. He is welcome to respect her if he likes, but I won't be voting for him if he puts her on the ticket with him. I want the evil Clintons no where near the White House or any position of power ever again. I pray that Barack Obama chooses wisely in terms of his running mate. We can't afford 4 more years of McBush and we can't afford a Clinton either.
