First thoughts: Gore-acle finally speaks

*** The Gore-acle finally speaketh: For months, the question wasn't if Al Gore was going to endorse Obama, but when. And would he do it at a time that was pivotal in the primary? Well, he chose not to poke the Clintons in the eye, waiting until last night to finally endorse Obama. But why was the event in Michigan? It presents risks and rewards for the Obama campaign. On the plus side, it’s obvious that Michigan has become a HUGE priority for Team Obama. After all, it has now unveiled two of its biggest endorsements in the state -- Edwards (on May 14) and Gore (last night). And those kind of big rallies enable a campaign to build up its field program. And where is Obama today? For a second day in a row, he’s in Michigan…On the other hand, Gore's stances on auto emissions are NOT popular with the auto industry. Having Gore endorse Obama in Michigan, of all places, might have been a risk for the campaign. But it was a risk it thought was worth taking.

VIDEO: NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray gives his first read on the political headlines of the day and takes a look back at a 2005 prediction by Tim Russert, saying that this year's electoral map may take on a different look.

*** Off-shore gambling? One day after Mr. Environment endorsed Obama in Michigan, McCain today gives a speech in Houston in which he will call for lifting the moratorium on off-shore drilling. It’s a move that's already generating plenty of criticism from environmental groups and Democrats, and it provides opponents with another example of McCain pursuing policies similar to Bush’s -- in this case, increased oil production (although McCain opposes drilling in ANWR). But McCain’s call for lifting the ban could also be seen as a pragmatic, short-term solution to high energy costs that could play well in places like Michigan, even if it’s loathed on the coasts. In fact, McCain may be gambling three things about Florida with this decision to back a lifting in the ban on offshore oil drilling: 1) the price of gas is high enough that voters are going to be more open to finding new energy sources; 2) his lead is big enough in Florida than he can afford to alienate some voters on this specific issue; and 3) forcing Obama to defend not drilling for oil on the coasts of Florida and California might give McCain a way to make Obama not look like he's trying to find a solutions to the nation's energy needs. One other thing to keep in mind: No Republicans in Florida have gotten elected statewide without endorsing the moratorium on off-shore oil drilling, so McCain's decision is going to get its share of criticism even from VP wannabe Charlie Crist. And if Crist tries to rationalize the McCain decision then we'll really find out just how much he wants on the ticket.

*** But still playing up those environmental credentials: To make sure that voters don’t see McCain’s call for lifting the off-shore drilling ban as another way in which the Arizona senator seems similar to Bush, McCain is unveiling a new TV ad that will run in battleground states and on national cable. It goes: “John McCain stood up to the president and sounded the alarm on global warming -- five years ago. Today, he has a realistic plan that will curb greenhouse gas emissions. A plan that will help grow our economy and protect our environment.”

VIDEO: Former Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle will join the Obama campaign as chief of staff to his future vice president choice. A Race for the White House panel discusses.

*** Title obsessions: We're amused by all the chatter, either pro or con, regarding Team Obama’s appointment of ex-Clinton manager Patti Solis Doyle as the chief of staff for the eventual VP nominee. First, it's not uncommon for a nominee to control the staffing of a running mate -- you don’t want a competing group of folks staffing a VP candidate who ends up more loyal to the veep than to the nominee. Two, they had to put her somewhere. A chief of staff on a campaign sometimes isn’t as powerful as a chief of staff for elected officials in office. This isn’t to assume PSD is being given an inflated title with no power; it's just a reminder that it could be that. Bottom line: Too much is being made out of this decision. It signals nothing other than getting the chattering class to attempt to read in between the lines on something that is just not there. A blind man could see that.

*** When CW is wrong: There was a growing consensus during the Democratic primary season that Obama was going to struggle with Latino voters -- due to the exit polls, his race, and McCain’s immigration stance. In fact, in that now-famous conference call in which Hillary Clinton indicated that she would be open to serving as Obama’s running mate, that response was spurred by concern by New York Rep. Nydia Velasquez (D) that Obama was going to have trouble with Latinos. But it looks like that CW -- at least right now -- was wrong. In addition to our recent NBC/WSJ poll, which showed Hispanics breaking for Obama 62%-28%, a new survey of 800 Latino voters from 21 states finds that 60% of them plan to vote for Obama versus 23% for McCain. That is down considerably from the 40%-plus Bush received in 2004. It’s no longer fair to say that Obama has a problem with Latino voters; McCain does. This was a case of conventional wisdom that was never based on fact, just semi-informed speculation based on primary exit polling and bad stereotypes of Latinos.

*** On the trail: McCain is in Texas, raising money in San Antonio and giving a speech and hitting another fundraiser in Houston. Obama spends another day in Michigan -- this time meeting with students at Wayne County Community College in Taylor.

*** Bill Clinton watch: The former president, in New York City, gives a speech tonight for the Radio City Music Hall Speakers Series. Per a spokesman, Clinton will talk about how corporate philanthropy and individual action can help find solutions to global challenges.

Isn’t it great to live in America now?  Just think, two African-Americans have captured our hearts and souls, and ultimately lifted the country.  Can anyone argue that Barack Obama and Tiger Woods are not two of the leading figures in our society today?

I know there are no elections today, but it is Tuesday and it seems like we should be viewing Tim Russert tonight for election analysis.  That big smile we see from the heaven in November will be his.
Texas will definitely be a republican state for McClain!

The Endorement of Edwards (on May 14) and Gore (last night) are huge for Obama!  However, I personally think getting one of them as the running mate would help his changes at becoming the president!!

Gore sure knows how to go out on a limb. Good way to mitigate your risk Al, endorsing a candidate that won the nomination two weeks ago. If Al was president in 2000, he'd still be making concessions to Saddam Hussein today, Kuwait would be part of Iraq, and Israel would be gone.
Why does Obama keep babbling about "Change", but yet his staff consists entirely of Washington insiders?
Why should the Great Lakes be immune to off-shore drilling? Then Michigan and Ohio can have the oil and environmental disasters they desire.
"This was a case of conventional wisdom that was never based on fact..."

Not only that, but people spouting such conventional wisdoms out there - such as the Democratic nominee having troubles with Latinos - did so knowing the previous conventional wisdom about how primary trends really doesn't have much to do with general election trends.

On the oil drilling speech in Houston versus the environmental speech in Michigan, the biggest news of the day might have been the rolling out of a new line of hydrogen fuel cell cars.
"Beggar" McCain has to keep pimping for money while Obama can work the crowds for new votes.  Why doesn't the beggar boy cut out the most wasteful earmark of all, him begging us taxpayers for $85 million for him to run a losing campaign?  Nope the beggar boy will waste taxpayer money because he's not interested in fiscal responsibility.

We don't need some big oil company screwing up our California coastline with drilling rigs and the inevitable spills that will spoil our great beaches.  We need more fuel conservation as we Americans waste way too much gas.

Go Obama 08/12!
The Democrats keep parading out these losers to endorse Obama, and for some strange reason, they always make a huge show of it. Edwards, Gore, Kerry, Carter, Clinton. All charter members of the Losers Hall of Fame.
Kind of fun to see the Obamotics scramble. I read Obamas health plan not so good by the top people that said the same thing when Hillary was running. hmmmm Gore could have been a big factor but not now. Obama picked up Doyle to help pick up latinos. (wont work) than puts her in an out of the way place. Typical Obama anti woman ploy.He says sweetie lets play gotcha on Hillary but you stay in background like a good typical woman ok?Please he is so out of touch.
Nice move Obama. Have a nutty tree hugger endorse you one day, and then the next day go to Michigan and try to convince them the auto industy is coming back -- not a chance that happens with all the environmental laws on the books. Me? I'm voting for McCain - he's not the best choice in the world, but he's much more honest and sincere then Obama.
the housing mess, highest gas prices ever and global warming are all bill clintons fault thank goodness bush and cheney and the republicans who have been in control the last 8 years are in charge, just think how bad things would have been if democrats had been in charge.  the mess in iraq is clintons fault too boy the dems really know how to screw things up. thank goodness mccain is bush and cheneys bff.

Thanks for pointing this out First Read - it appears that the same may apply to women as well. However, Senator Obama's message is not about targeting individual demographic groups and appealing to their fears and grievances.

Senator Obama's entire campaign is based on one simple truth: unless we ALL work together for our common goals, America the country will never become as great as the American people individually are. That is the real change that we all hunger for - united we stand, divided we fall.

Obama '08/'12

P.S. I really enjoyed the "Goreacles" (lol) speech last night - especially the part about elections mattering if you like the T in your BLT - because I definitely do! :)
[[ the biggest news of the day might have been the rolling out of a new line of hydrogen fuel cell cars.]]

Nice. So, where do fill them up? At the hydrogen station? Haven't seen to many of those stations  around my neighborhood. Isn't hydrogen what took out the Hindenburg?
I wasn't on the boards yesterday.  I just wanted to say that I am pulling for you guys today and tomorrow.  Chuck, you looked so sad this morning - not your usual chipper self.  Understandably so.

Please thank the Russerts for televising tomorrow's service to allow us to grieve with them.  They didn't have to do that, and I'm glad they did.

Did anyone else's heart break last night when Brian Williams showed that picture of James Carville and Mary Matalin on MTP Sunday?  I hadn't realized until this weekend that they were that close.

There were so many things that I learned this weekend about Mr. Russert that I didn't know.  Wow.  It's no wonder that this is SO hard to take.  What a remarkable person he was.

It still feels surreal to me.  I know we need to move on, but it still feels off somehow.

That's all I wanted to say.  Thanks for the good work, all.
Can it be the great Obama camp could need money?McCain is raiseing more each month. Wonder why.hmm Gores letter to me ask for money three times in one letter. geesh. Things dont look good for Obama. When is he leaving for the front lines??McCain gave the Iraqi leader courteousy of meeting in person. Obama gave him couple of his mins. on phone. What a leader. Sit with Iran heads but cannt meet face to face in our own country with other leaders. Obama to important for that.makes us look stupid. Wonder if Obama goes there if this leader will call him. What an arrogant snob Obama.Talk to him you guys so we wont look so much like wannabees.
"There was a growing consensus during the Democratic primary season that Obama was going to struggle with Latino voters"
******************************

That's because far too many pundits came to the naive conclusion that a vote for Hillary in the primaries automatically translated  into a vote against Obama in the general. It was fallacious logic, but no matter how many times that was pointed out to them, the MSM refused to accept (or comprehend) it.

As for those ex-Hillary supporters who refuse to vote for the candidate who shares most of her views and instead choose to support the one whose views are in total contradiction to Hillary's - well, some people just can't stand the thought of a black man as President.
Since California will not drill off their coastline, let them continue to pay the highest prices in the country for gasoline.  In fact, California should be paying $10.00 a gallon for their stupidity.

Liberals love high costs of fuel, food and other things.  Always have and always will.  It is the Liberals in this country that makes life so miserable for other Americans.  We have platforms right off the coast of Texas.  I think that oil and gas should stay here in Texas myself.  China and Cuba drilling off the coast of Florida, they too should be paying $10.00 a gallon for gasoline as well.

Liberalism is a disease.....
What does CW mean?
But it looks like that CW -- at least right now -- was wrong. Nothing new here...let's see early on Hillary was "she couldn't lose", AA wouldn't support Obama...then women wouldn't.

Don't worry  you're like the comics...no one takes what you say seriously, its just fun reading.

Glad to see you can admit that you are wrong...I just ask that you keep it in mind as you proclaim future words of "wisdom"
When will the candidates start talking about education?  It is an important concern as schools re-tool for a new year.  Will we wait until September?

Charlie Crist showing true colors:

"Florida Gov. Charlie Crist tells Buzz that he loves Sen. John McCain's idea to lift the federal moratorium on off-shore drilling and let individual states decide whether to allow oil and gas exploration. He also said he wouldn't rule out letting Florida opt to drill off-shore.

"Florida has one of the most pristine environments on the planet, and I'm committed to protecting it," Crist told the St. Petersburg Times this evening. "But we also need to be pragmatic. We need to protect Florida and America's economy, and I look forward to the discussion."

The Gore-acle is kindof late to jump the endorsement wagon.  But I think its good, it will help him get important votes.

McCain's so called straight talk on the environment
Candidates on equal pay.

I find it odd you calling someone else beggar when you have on same site and many others people begging for Obama with sales yet. Sales are a give away you need help so looks like pot calling kettle black. Also Obama hijacks sites to get money and Gore ask me 3 times in one letter please give Bommy money. Hello. whos begging??
"Even our dogs and cats, know that elections matter"
These are classic words. Jobs going to China lead to needless death of American animals, lead in our children toys threaten their lives. I understand Republicans want to win the election because of a lot of bitter rivalry, but I tell you what, those that think McSame will change anything are just fooling themselves. Then again maybe not, maybe winning is more important.
That dog and cats line from Gore last night may have been the dumbest thing I've ever heard that robot say.  What in the world was he talking about?
Katie Morgan, East Lansing, MI:

I'd rather have a tree-hugger than an Bush-hugger any day!
What a brilliant mind in Barack Obama - The McCain/GOP supporters can't stand that it.

Barack will bring what this country has lacked since the beginning of Bush/Cheney administration and that is honesty and intellect.

GOP supporter - Do you know what Christians are meant to do according to the Bible?

If any of you GOP supporters consider yourself a Christian...then you would know that what has happened in the last 8 years by the Bush/Cheney administration is not Christian like.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
jerry--your beloved neocon vp admitted he lied when he said China was drilling off the coast of Cuba. Liberalism might be a disease, but at least it doesn't affect my brain. Do some research before tossing your unwarranted accusations into the public sphere, buddy.
What exactly has Obama changed other than his church?  He declined the "Gang of 14" and has this little soundbite:

"The dispute came as a rudimentary arms race began to develop between the camps, with Obama pledging that if Republicans 'bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.' "

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-campaign.1jun15,0,5053443.story

Sounds like a guy bridging the divide to me.
You republican posters here need to be a little more informed and conseqeuntly may then read a little more intelligent.
Right now you come across like troglodytes just swinging in the trees.

You have had eight years and squandered them all for the corporations and lobbiests.  Some of these postings are so out of touch, one is left wondering if you are even sane.   Also, when you make wild claims please provide links to proof of these claims.
jerry/corpus christi texas,

It is the Liberals in this country that makes life so miserable for other Americans.

Nope. That honor goes to Geroge W. Bush, and the rest of the GOP clones stuck in the 1950s (McFossil), Jerry.

Conventional Wisdom
When will the candidates start talking about education?  <<---

Cost of schools is rising faster then that of health care costs. Seeing schools are run by the government, is it any wonder that many people resist the government taking over health care?
Offshore drilling is another fallacy. If you do not restrict US oil from being sold on the world market, then increasing the amount of oil generated from the US will only increase oil company profits; not lessen our dependence. These are articles from 2001 and 2004 on the ANWR question:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4542853/
http://www.time.com/time/columnist/waller/article/0,9565,170983,00.html
From the CIA fact book, the US EXPORTS 1.048 million barrels of oil a day:
http://indexmundi.com/united_states/oil_exports.html
We export fully 10% of US recovered oil:
http://www.exponentialimprovement.com/cms/petrolprevar.shtml
So it is BS that offshore drilling, or ANWR will do anything about our immediate gas crunch.
We must develop alternative sources of energy; Honda's new Hydrogen car is a good start.
It is crucial we develop an economic and energy policy that does not depend on oil. McCain will not do that; he is in bed with his oil company lobbyists who want to keep us dependent on their product.
Chuck, you may have noticed that Detroit has been laying off workers for 20 years now.  That town is dying and it's not because the old ways of doing business are working for them.  Changing to producing what the world wants, a new style of high efficiency vehicle is what will create jobs for them.

I for the life of me, cannot figure out why the media is so hesitant to report accurately on green jobs.  Making a car that people want vs. low technology cars that get killed by Japanese companies that get great gas mileage has been killing these companies for years.  Having an aversion to taking a risk so you don't take a loss in the next quarter is what the real problem is...while Japanese culture allows for a long term vision.

Try writing about that...oh, I forgot, just quick snippets that have little basis in facts.  Come on guys, take a little time to think through what you're "reporting."

http://infogiant.wordpress.com/
What does CW mean?
TheDon, Missouri (Sent Tuesday, June 17, 2008 10:00 AM)

-----------------------------NOT MUCH!!!
You make your pitch about cars that run on clean energy in Michigan because that's how you're going to bring jobs back to the state.  You speak about the strength that used to be the Detroit auto industry and then you talk about how they need to lead the way for the next generation of cars that will end our dependence on foreign oil.

Yes, the Hindenberg was filled with hydrogen but nobody new how to handle it back then.  It was not the sole factor that led to its destruction.
McCain = Republican slick oil company politician.

In 1999, the largest oil discovery in the lower 48 states was discovered in North Dakota.  There is enough oil to meet US consumption for 20 years.

Until the oil companies realized the Republicans would no longer be able to protect them, these oil companies refused to drill here.

Recently, the oil companies started drilling in this region.

In 2008, North Dakota voters approved construction of the first new US refinery since the 1970's.

Instead of mentioning this fact, McCain talks about Alaska and coastal drilling.  If McCain, Bush, and Cheney had pressed these oil companies to start drilling in North Dakota after 9/11, gasoline would be half the price we're currently paying.

Instead of a terrible economic crisis, America would be experiencing growth like the 1990's.
How is offshore drilling a "short-term" solution?  Please explain what makes you think the entire exploration/construction/production cycle is in any way a process that can be completed in the short term.
jerry/ corpus christ texas

Gee...theres the hateful, condescending, better-than- thou know-it-all, wonder where you had been.
Hey, the neo-con mindset has really worked for us hasn't it. We now have bigger government, huge deficits, never ending war, spiraling inflation, housing bust, high consumer prices.  Yeah, we want more of the same.
Karen, Duluth - Maybe you should listen to the entire quote before you say the deumbest thing I've ever heard!
I am not sure what all of you Obamicans are so excited about... for a guy who claims "bi-partisan" abilities.. its odd he is the most liberal senator.  For a guy who talks about his judgement... I am wondering which version of his Iran policy we should base him on.  He wants to end "attack politics" but purposely and repeatedly spins McCain's 100 years comment.

Is that "change"??  Its the same thing we have been experiencing since Nixon.  He is a good orator, so he tells you things, and you believe them.  Sadly, you arent doing your own research if you think Obama is moderate, able to bring change, or has great judgement. By the way, his war speech was given at an anti-war rally, and since he has had a say in the matter he has voted the same as McCain... yeah... thats change!!!!  (Note, I havent touched on well documented lies he told about rezko or how he brought his kids to see Rev. Wright... I respect the Reverend's right to say what he pleases.  That being said, dont tell me its a good enviornment for young, impressionable kids.  I dont even have kids and I know that.)

Anyone rational can see the only change Obama will bring is the party affiliation of the White House.  We have an extereme right wing president with poor judgement, no experience, stubbornness on his views, and is incredibly divisive.  Can you show me any instance that would lead you to believe B.O. isnt a left wing GW Bush??  We need moderation people, not more extremes.
Barack Hussein Obama is a leftist liberal product of corrupt Chicago politics who hypocritically preaches all kinds of platitudes for others but in his public life has failed to demonstrate with his own actions. What happened to his "Old Uncle" Rev. Wright? Dumped!  His church of 20 years? Dumped!

A real steady guy. He will do and say whatever it takes to get the prize. The history of his political rise in Chicago is ugly. His record in the Illinois legislature and later in the US Senate contains absolutely nothing but a record of doing what is politically expedient. Look up his countless "Present" votes.

Obama is a product of Old Line Politics. Change America Into what? Judge a man by his actions not his words.
I'm glad that you guys have finally started using the facts and have realized that Sen. Obama doesn't have a Latino problem.  I've been screaming this from the mountaintops this whole election cycle.  Now you guys need to go a step further and also realize that he doesn't have a Jewish problem or a women problem either.  I'll admit that he does have an Appalachian problem of sorts but if you look at the numbers closely, you will see that McCain doesn't have the same level of dominance in that demographic as Clinton had.  McCain on the other hand has an African-American problem, a Native-American problem, a higher-education problem, an under 50 problem, a women problem, and if he pursues this drilling off of the coast of Florida--then he will have a Florida problem.
More from jerry spewing already debunked stories about the chineses drilling off cuba and florida

Montel Williams and the free meds tour will be there soon, hang in there man.

The reason Clinton supporters will not vote for Obama is because they are embarrassed of him, his life, his unfair tactics and his beliefs. And they still don't know all about him.

They don't want a candidate that has been in a twenty year relationship with Reverend Wright and the Trinity United Church of Christ.

They don’t’ want a candidate that has a twenty year relationship with Father Pflaeger as his compass in life

They don’t want a candidate that went to a church that supports Louis Farrakhan, an anti Semitic racist.

They don't want to defend Black Liberation theology.

They don’t want a candidate that lies about his relationship with Tony Rezko, the Syrian Criminal that sold his property to Obama and supported his campaign.

They don't want a candidate that could work with a domestic terrorist, William Ayers.

They don’t' want a candidate that didn't stand up for the voters of Michigan and Florida.

They don’t want a candidate that Hamas supports.

They don’t want a candidate that Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam support

They don’t want a candidate that has a wife that has just now realized she was proud of our country.

They don’t want a candidate that denies Florida and Michigan their voices

They don’t want a candidate that mentions 57 states in his speeches.  50 states in the USA and 57 states in the Nation of Islam  (IOC website)

They don’t want a candidate that fights unfair and steals Michigan delegate votes from his opponent.

They don’t want a candidate that feels sorry to leave a church that is anti American and that preaches hatred and racial views that are cruel and nasty.

They don't want a candidate that is inexperienced.

They don’t want a candidate that considers it a loss to not to be able to attend his anti American, racist Church.

They don’t want a candidate that has a Muslim father.

They don’t’ want a candidate that can’t win a debate

They don’t’ want a candidate that misleads the youth with an ‘Obama girl and her behind in their face”

They don’t want a candidate that says he’s an African American and missed the MLK Remembrance Day and the Louisiana Black Caucus meeting

They don’t want a candidate that has done nothing for humanity except talk about it.

They don’t' want a candidate named; Barack Hussein Obama

He scares them to death.
He is embarrassing.
He is unelectable.

"He says sweetie lets play gotcha on Hillary but you stay in background like a good typical woman ok?" jane-pa (Sent Tuesday, June 17, 2008 9:49 AM)

Wow, Jane, you are right...he doesn't allow any strong women voice their opinion does he?  Michelle NEVER gets to say a word, he must be Archie Bunker all over that little woman of his...jeez.  And we just THOUGHT we were in Silly Season before.
Eric,Salinas,Ca
I find it odd you calling someone else beggar when you have on same site and many others people begging for Obama with sales yet.

Hey Jane, PA,
Try getting your facts straight.  I've never ever tried to sell anything on this or any other site and have never advertised for anything.  I hate marketing.  More typical lies and deceit from a repugnant one who's desperate to play the smear and fear game.

Go Obama 08/12!
jerry/corpus christi, I am a liberal because its in my nature to look towards the future. I realize most conservatives are not wired that way, hence they think future - oriented people are "whacky" or "looney." Liberals look into the future and see the problems inherent in depending on oil for our energy. This is why we reject short term solutions like drilling in Alaska. The fact is, there is not enough oil in America to supply us for more than a few months. Its not just that we would be endangering our environment by drilling in Alaska, its that it really doesn't solve our energy problem. And we have a really big problem, in that depending on foreign oil sources ham strings our security, and contributes to global warming. (Yes, global warming is real. The eggheads have figured that one out.) Don't be afraid of liberalism, Jerry. Open your mind and learn.

Would someone from t the media please continue to investigate Senator Obama.  Senator Obama needs vetting. Senator Clinton was the only candidate ready to serve the post of President of the United States.

If you would think of this as a job interview:
Democrats should all run from Obama

His resume has no substance
Referrals and past co workers consists of racists, Anti American pastors and criminals such as Rezko.
His co worker was William Ayers, a domestic terrorist

Please for the sake of our country, read about this man.

His name alone speaks volumes:
Barack Hussein Obama
What do Americans expect to hear from Sen. Obama “Yes I think like Wright. I knew that Ayers was a terrorist. I have Muslims in my family.”

He’ll lie about everything and throw everyone under the bus, including his church, his white grandmother, and his Muslim followers. (Check out the Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Farrakhan had 20,000 Muslims meeting in Chicago a few months ago to support Obama. It’s scary.}

Obama is a deceptive politician, ignoring voices of the voters, practicing unfair voting tactics. He is for Obama only.

Stop with the "he's cool" ideas and think! Investigate. For the sake of our country, this is serious.
