Liberal groups air anti-McCain TV ad

From NBC's Mark Murray
MoveOn (which endorsed Obama during the primary season) and the labor union AFSCME (which backed Clinton) have teamed up for a new provocative, hard-hitting TV ad on McCain that revisits the Arizona senator's "100 years" remark regarding Iraq.

It features a mother and her baby, Alex. "Hi, John McCain, this is Alex, he's my first," she says. "So far, his talents include trying any new food and chasing after our dog. That, and making my heart pound every time I look at him. So, John McCain, when you said you would stay in Iraq for 100 years, were you counting on Alex? Because if you were, you can’t have him."

Per a release, the groups are spending $540,000 on this ad, and it will run in the battlegrounds of Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as on national cable.

*** UPDATE *** RNC spokesman Alex Conant emails First Read this response to the ad: “MoveOn.org was wrong to smear General Petraeus, just like Barack Obama was wrong to not go to Iraq to meet with him. America cannot afford a Commander-in-Chief who listens to partisan groups like MoveOn.org instead of our commanders. Bringing peace and security to Iraq will require a Commander in Chief who won’t allow partisanship to cloud his judgment.”

*** UPDATE II *** NBC's Katie Mulhall has more: MoveOn and AFSCME held a conference call this morning with MoveOn executive director Eli Pariser, AFSCME's Paul Booth, and Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg discussing the ad. Greenberg has worked with MoveOn since 2004 to Web-test its ads, and according to her, this was the group’s top-testing ad to date. Five hundred likely voters were asked whether they agreed with the ad, and they were asked their impressions of McCain on a number of attributes before and after viewing the ad. There was significant movement, she said, on two key issues -- willingness to go to war and “being part of the mess in Washington." After viewing the ad, voters were 13 points more likely to describe McCain as “part of the mess."

As mentioned above, AFSCME had endorsed Clinton in the Democratic primary, but Booth signaled his group’s willingness to work on Obama’s behalf, saying that the members understand the general election presents “a very clear choice” and that “if he puts his shoulder to the wheel, we’ll be there.” Pariser added that while the two groups supported different candidates in the primary, they both “represent the same type of people” who want to end the war and improve our economy.

Hahaha. They should run that ad in Nevada as well.
Very good....what a great ad !
Your poor little Alex stands a better chance of being drafted if your ilk takes over this country, and the people who defend us now decide we're not worth it anymore.
Add to this the latest poll from Virginia that shows Obama edging out McCain and the news is good for the Democrat: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/06/monday-polls-virginia-is-indeed-toss-up.html
It's funny how Obama whines and cries about being 'attacked,' and that he's 'taken out of context' when he says some of the ignorant things he does but he has no problem with an attack ad containing a phrase that we all know has been completely distorted.
Give me a break...the Obama people whine all day about things their candidate says being taken out of context.  Now they are going to launch a huge ad campaign on a partial sentence taken out of context.  Couldn't even use the whole quote because most rationale people would realize exactly what McCain meant.  The ad conveniently forgets to mention the as long as our troops aren't being killed part.  Seems pretty clear to me, but then again MoveOn has never really been worried about telling the truth.
Amazing ad.  They should show this In Alabama, Miss and Ga.

This is watered down fear-mongering ad.  I am with it, but the 100 year thing isn't needed.  The republican policy hasn't settled on a date for withdrawl.  That means forever!  Not 100 years.  Forever.
Sally, Virginia - If NEVER heard Obama complain. And it's McCain's own words...if McCain thinks Iraq wil EVER be a Japan or Germany, he's insane. So the troops will really be there for a 100 years trying to get it to that point.

Someone Please add the Governor of California to Barack's V P list.

Sorry, John, "The Governator"* can not be Vice President as he is a naturalized citizen.

"GET TO THE CHOPPER!"
News Flash, MoveOn isn't the Obama Camp.  It's an independent group, so don't pin this on them.  Not that I disagree with the content of this ad in the slightest, but don't try to pin every independent ad on either campaign, they have no control over them.
I like how Obama haters are trying to link this to Obama. He didn't put this out. It says that in the first few lines. The two groups did it independently and are paying for it independently.

So will Obama be to blame if a tornado takes McCain's house?

PLEASE think. Rabid hate will get you nowhere.
I'm a strong Obama supporter and have been adamantly against this tragic war from the beginning, but I really don't like this ad.  MoveOn consistenly misreads where the public is and "jumps the shark" so to speak.  I get that same icky feeling as with the "Patreus Betray Us" ad.  There are so many strong, substantive arguments to be made against McCain's terrible Iraq policies that would sway many Americans.  Using a little baby as a prop and rehashing the "100 years" comment won't do it.  Get ready for another backlash even though MoveOn is on the right side of the argument.
"...but he has no problem with an attack ad containing a phrase that we all know has been completely distorted."
**************************

How is it taken out of context? McCain is talking about having a military presence in Iraq indefinitely. He tries to justify it by citing our continued presence in places like Korea and Germany, but it's fallacious logic because Iraq is NOTHING like those two nations. Unlike Korea and Germany, our conflict in Iraq is NOT with their government - it is with a group of rebels and terrorists that does not abide by any treaties and is fueled by their fundamentalist hatred of Americans. This means continued attacks on our forces and more dead soldiers. And no matter how many times you declare "Mission Accomplished" that's not going to change. Moreover, WE CAN'T AFFORD IT!!! It's costing us BILLIONS, and we desperately need that money to be infused back into our own economy.

It's NOT taken out of context - his position on this is flawed as is.
Paddy Noster, Virginia: '...If Al was president in 2000, he'd still be making concessions to Saddam Hussein today, Kuwait would be part of Iraq, and Israel would be gone...'

WOW, Paddy !!
Lucky your candidate won !!
Look at the paradise we're living in NOW !

A perpetual war in Iraq & Afghanistan
(Sign up, TODAY ! kiddies !)
US prestige at an all time low
A crooked, corrupt and inept Justice Dept
Politicized beyond belief

How about the response to Katrina in NO ?
A discredited CIA, corrupt and politicized

WOW !
What a great job, Paddy !!

It's lucky Bush won, huh ?
Hey John McBush,

You can't have any of my three kids either.

NO MORE WAR
So, First Read, when are you going to comment on the anti-McCain ads showing young people in sexual encouters?  Your competitor showed and commented on them last night already.  Pretty disgusting content for a Presidential candidate.
Fair game.  McCain the War Gnome is not intellectually or emotionally up to being president.  By the time the RNC holds its' convention McCain may have very well opened his mouth enough that they'll be giving the nomination to Ron Paul.
Correction - I meant Japan not Korea. Brain fart...

REMEMBER IN NOVEMBER...................and forever.
Sally, Sally, Sally, there you go again. Go and re-read the article carefully and you will see that it is not Barack Obama running the ad but MoveOn.org.  In fact Obama has asked that the independent groups not run such ads.  Also the McCain phrase was not distorted. The ad talks about staying in Iraq and does not mention fighting or dying in Iraq. McCain's clarification said that it was OK to stay in Iraq indefinitely as long as the troops weren't dying.  Please don't distort.
Simple minded Dave,TN...

As always you jump at the slightest opportunity to condemn Obama. However, you never have anything positive to say about McCain. Must be a difficult effort to support him. Why don't you just make it easy for yourself and say."He is so much like Bush, I can't see how he could lose in November."
Typical goofy ad by a bunch of typical goofy people...

At least my side is proud of America....
Unlike Michelle Obama.....
Sally, Virginia: '...an attack ad containing a phrase that we all know has been completely distorted...'

Sally, that quote HASN'T been distorted
It's exactly what McCain wants
The hidden agenda is war with Iran
Remember 'Bomb, bomb, bomb ... Bomb, Bomb Iran' ?

THAT was NO JOKE !

McCain is the JOKE !

John McCain, Endless War

John McCain, More of the same

John McCain: Bomb, bomb, bomb ... Bomb, Bomb Iran

Take a nap John, it’s been a long morning

McCain needs to allow us to review his entire military record.  Read this and you'll start to see the true correlation between him and George Bush.

Absolutely brilliant!!!! and true.

Rest assured the GOP, RNC, Neo- Con cronies will keep their kids from fighting this Bush/Cheney/John McCain 100 year war.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Dookie: '...The ad conveniently forgets to mention the as long as our troops aren't being killed part...'

Why would we have troops is Iraq in PEACE TIME ?
Why have them there if there's no war ?
WHY would we need troops in Iraq, then ?

What's the point ?
To steal oil ?
To keep our puppets in power ?

Or to Attack Iran ?

Go figure...

John McCain, Endless War
No more FREE PASS for McCain !!

Last weekend, McCain said that it is TOUGH for ANYONE to be PROUD of the US.  How's this different from Michelle Obama's statement?  Only HuffingtonPost reported this.
The phrase the Senator used is indicative of his views to stay the course no matter how long it takes...which, in many minds, presents a grim and disturbing account under any scenario. But to take it out of context, undercuts the intelligence of the independants and disenfranchised republicans they seek (and if this IS the case, the ad appeals to the LCD and, ultimately, creates a more divisive atmosphere). I'm sure there is a better way to appeal to those that will vote in November.
I disagree with you EC on this ad.  The General Betrayus ad was too much and made my skin crawl...this one however merely puts the Iraq war in perspective.  Alex may very well have to fight in Iraq if we continue down this road.  There never has been nor will there ever be a peaceful middle east and trying to establish a democratic stronghold will not work.
In WI we know what McCain meant by the 100yrs comment. Many of us up here hate that we went to Iraq but, feel a moral responsibility to the people of Iraq now. To devastate that country and leave them without proper government or infrastructure would be completely irresponsible. We won't vote for the LEAST qualified candidate. Even if he does give a great speech! As for me, I'll write-in Hillary!
Gaps in McCain's military record?

"McCain's Secret, Questionable Record"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeffrey-klein/mccains-secret-questionab_b_107409.html
Our nation has depended on our sons for war since the 1770's. The fact that liberal Democrat parents dont believe anything is worth fighting for is nothing new. Like McCain or not, he has a son that is an enlisted Marine... He believes and has taught his children that freedom is not free and sacrifices have to be made, even by mothers...
The ad conveniently forgets to mention the as long as our troops aren't being killed part.  Seems pretty clear to me, but then again MoveOn has never really been worried about telling the truth. -Dookie
-------------------------------------------------------
So if your child were stationed in Iraq for many many years but wasn't being harmed you'd have no problem with that??!! Having a longterm presence in Iraq also continues to cripple the economy as millions of dollars is spent there.  Additionally, in what world does McCain really believe that a day would come when American soldiers are not being killed in Iraq? So you fight and keep getting killed until that day comes, then you continue to stay. Last of all, McFlipFlop said some years ago that a longterm troop presence like what we have in North Korea is not a good idea: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QzwWKEhFv6A   Get it together!
As an Obama supporter, the ad is embarrassing and the self-righteousness of it is nauseating. It plays to every stereotype out there of Obama supporters being soft little mommies who would never let their babies go off to fight (even if the fight was necessary). Worse, it plays again on a stupid turn of a phrase that McCain spit out, giving it gravity it didn't ask for and doesn't deserve.

The "100 years" phrase CAN be used to define him - as a guy who is incapable of disciplining himself to act like a mature man rather than an irascible jerk.  Senator Maverick has plenty of actual biographical baggage to use in painting his complete picture to an American public who doesn't really know the reality of him. They know that he spent 5 years in the Hanoi Hilton, but might not know that he also graduated 894th out of 899 at Annapolis, and would have been kicked out if his father hadn't been an admiral. You can show video of him saying he wants cap and trade policies, then saying 'but the cap shoudn't be mandatory' (uh...."caps" are, by definition, mandatory). You can show him saying the Bush tax cuts were stupid 7 years ago, then show him now saying they're great. Actual substantial and substantiated examples that tell voters something about who he is.

But putting precious little mommy with her precious little tot and smugly informing a potential president that he can't have her baby is not going to persuade anyone, and has more potential to damage the candidate they DO support than harm the one they don't.

No more staged pleading to the camera, please. Stick to the facts and act like grownups.
Prompted by his companion, the Hon. Senator from Judea and Samaria, McCain chirps about bombing Iran while colonizing Iraq for many years to come.  Meanwhile, bin Laden remains free to plot or coordinate terror, as has been the case during the first terms of the Bush presidency.

In a few more months we will have a new President.  As Commander in Chief, Barack Obama's steady hand will bring a welcome change from the near-sighted lurches performed by the current cast.
Thoughts but no emotions, Remember the NC ad you guys were up in arms about? Condeming McCain for not stopping them? Obama is a typical entitlement jockey. He "deserves to be treated better" than his competition!!!
Alex Conant from RNC emails First Read? Don't you people have any standards for decency and honesty?
It would be 100% Alex's choice to join the military, not his parents.  Alot of good people joined the military in the past few years knowing full well they would be deployed.
Just made my donation to Moveon.  You?

https://pol.moveon.org/donate/alexad.html?rc=youtube
I agree with ec, boston, ma. MoveOn and Code Pink turn me off with their over the top tactics, but then, I'm not really the target audience, am I? I don't need convincing that McCain would bankrupt the country and destroy our security in the name of "winning."(Without being able to define what winning is.)
Poor little Alex will be paying reparations!
Well..just like McCain said he couldn't stop independend attack ads on Obama.....well, Obama can't stop the attack ads on McCain.

And guess what? There's a LOT more ammo to attack McCain.

So bring it.

At least our side doesn't have to fabricate recipes for articles.

It's sad that something as small as a cookie recipe isn't safe in republican hands.  Just sad....
"America cannot afford a Commander-in-Chief who listens to partisan groups like MoveOn.org instead of our commanders."

WHO SAID BARACK WAS LISTENING TO MOVEON.ORG????

They're acting INDEPENDENTLY, Mr. Conant......idiot.
"At least my side is proud of America....
Unlike Michelle Obama....."

What are you proud of? The war we were lied into or the fact that Bush screwed up everything possible in the last 7 years. You must be proud.
So, if, hypothetically, Obama said something to this effect, "There have been vicious e-mails circulating that say I am a Muslim,"  would it be OK for some independent group to run an ad saying, Barack Obama said, "I am a Muslim"?  It's not distorting his words, it's what he actually said.  The ad would clearly be misleading, and if the whole quote was used, it would show what Obama truly meant.  I have no problem with the argument that MSierra presents above.  If you have a problem with the whole quote, that's fine, go after that.  But to take a sentence fragment and make it seem as though John McCain wants 100 years of fighting is misleading at best.  As for MoveOn not being associated with the Obama campaign that is certainly technically true.  It is certainly a fine line though.  And I assume that no one will be blaming McCain if some independent ads come out against Obama that are misleading.
Obama has stated he will go to Iraq and Afganistan later in the summer. The RNC has no standing to attack Obama on partisian remarks.  This group utilized the fear of war to link to any Democrat to the terroists.( Max Cleland)  The truth is we are not winning in Iraq. The political "surge" has not taken place and the treaty Mr. Bush is trying to arrange with the Iraqi's will only inflame nationalistic and religious tendencies.  This is not like Korea. We have three seperate regions controlled by the different relgious sects in Iraq.  We have an Iraqi Government finaliizing a close relationship with Iran.( to Grorge and John this is an appeaser and should be run out of office) We will spend billions and lose untold lives for a war of convenience.  This war has cost us our standing in the world, our economy and wrecked out military.  Why would I vote for McCain?
For all the Republicans whining about how this 527 group has unfairly attacked McCain, your own candidate said he was powerless to prevent 527 groups from airing attack ads. He opened the door for this kind of thing despite his puny attempts to make us believe otherwise.
