Obama: McCain 'out of touch' on ed.

Posted: Tuesday, June 17, 2008 2:03 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones
TAYLOR, Mich. -- McCain is “out of touch” with people who struggle to pay for college, Obama told a small group of students during a town hall at a community college outside Detroit Tuesday.

Obama argued the Arizona senator cared more about helping big business than helping students pay for higher education.

VIDEO: The cost of attending college rose six percent in 2007, at a rate that surpassed rising food, medical and housing costs, according to NBC in March.

“I do not accept an America where you can't achieve your potential because you can't afford it; where two million qualified students will pass up college this decade because they can't afford it,” he said. “Now, this isn't an issue that you hear Sen. McCain talk about that much, because when it comes to education, Sen. McCain, I believe, is out of touch with the situation of many hard-working Americans.

“It's not just that he doesn't have a real plan to make college affordable; it's that he's voted time and time again to stop us from making college affordable. A couple of years ago, he even voted against funding for students, so he could protect billions of dollars in corporate tax loopholes. Well, that's not the kind of change that people of Michigan are looking for. That's not the kind of change that will strengthen our middle class or make America more competitive.”

He went on to lay out his plans to offer a $4,000 tax credit to help students pay for college in return for public service and to require the federal government to provide all federal student loans.

Painting a rival as “out of touch” with the concerns or beliefs of ordinary Americans is a common tactic. Obama has pointed to McCain's tax proposals, which will benefit wealthy Americans most, as an example of his not understanding the needs of middle-class Americans, while McCain and the Republican Party have sought to portray the Illinois senator as a liberal elitist who doesn't relate to everyday Americans, because of his stance on issues like gun control, the rights of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and his opposition to a gas-tax holiday.

Obama spent about 30 minutes talking with students about the challenges they are facing in paying their tuition. Before the town hall, the senator met with Marilyn Pace, a student, and Marcus McGrew, a financial counselor at the school. According to a “pool” reporter, Pace said high gas prices had made paying for school more difficult and later began to cry. Obama counseled her, saying, “You're gonna be fine.”

(A pool reporter is a rotating reporter who is allowed into various events on the trail and then shares notes with the rest of the press corps.)

Most of us feel the DNC stole the nominee from Hillary...giving a man votes from MI and his name wasn't even there to vote for....so to heck with the DNC, you have lost the faithful. - Luanne, TN
-----------------------------------------------------
They voted UNCOMITTED when Hillary's name was on the ballot.  And there were also about 30,000 write-ins. If they didn't vote for her when her name was right there, who do you think they were voting for??? Papa Smurf? Additionally, it was clearly known that even if full voting rights were given to Michigan and Florida (though they broke the rules) and Obama was not given uncommitted, he still would have been ahead in the delegate count.  That's how well he was doing! You can go ahead and vote for McCain whose policies and plans are in direct contrast with Hillary Clinton's and the rest of the Democratic party.
Well he doesn't care much about education because he doesn't have one. Duh.
McCain does not care about educating our youth nor the veterns that return from Iraq. I don't understand how McCain calls Obama an elitist when Obama just finished paying off his college debt. He also was raised in a single family home with food stamps. Unlike McCain who was raised with a silver spoon in  his mouth. Obama seems to be more in touch with americans than McCain.
McCain may be "out of touch", but Obama is out of his mind. If Obama gets half of the programs he's pandered to America, and stops the war, then our taxes are still going up by 20%. I'll take my chances with the so called out of touch guy.
I have 3 children, 12, 10 and 8.  Obama will get my vote for the pure fact that he is pro-education! And I am hopeful that he will follow through making a college education more available everyone.  We can barely pay to fill our gas tank as it is.  I can't even begin to start thinking about college!
Obama keep it up. We need change in the USA. We need to change america from being if you are rich then you are ok and if you are dirt poor there are programs to help you. I was born a middle class american and I am currently a middle class american. We need relief. We struggle every day to pay for all of our needs (food, shelter, utilities, chidcare, education, gas, etc.) I just do not understand how we the middle class who make up the majority of the population have allowed ourselves to get shafted year after year.
Wish I could have had an affirmative action scholarship! I had to get a job and take out loans. What does he know about it?
Obama is the only candidate that can relate to us who are still in ddebt over our education. He just finished paying off his loans. Mccain didn't even finish, let alone pay for student loans. How can he understand???
... we are all going to be fine and get through this time of turbulance with Obama at the helm!

Re: Catherine in Berwick PA;  A Day in the Life of Joe Republican
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffee pot with water to prepare his morning coffee.  The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.  With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication.  His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.  All but $10 of Joe's medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too.  He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs.  Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.  In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo.  His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.  Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath.  The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our air.  He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work.  It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day.  He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.  Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.  If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.  It's noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills.  Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.  Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

After work this evening, Joe plans to visit his father at his farm home in the country.  He gets in his car for the drive.  His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards.  He arrives at his boyhood home.  His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.  The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.  Joe is happy to see his father, who is now retired and lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.  Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show.  The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good.  He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.  Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives!  After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

True.  Obama '08
Come Obama be fare McCain still thinks that 75 dollars will buy school books. Kinda like one of those old guys sitting in a waiters section leaving a quarter. Back in the day that was good money but McCain has no sense of what it's like in the real world. He owns or she owns 8 homes, darn wish I had married for money and youth.  Lord dont let my wife read this.
LOL:

Earlier this year, The New York Nitwit, Charlie Rangel got a $2 million dollar endowment to put his name on the communication building at NYU.....

Don you know how many African American children could have been educated instead of spending that money on having your name put on a building......

Somebody needs to ask Obama that......

listening to liberals talk about the cost of college is pretty laughable, considering they are the one's who have caused all the costs to go up in the first place.....
McCain graduated at the bottom 1% of his naval academy.
Now he is old. The part of the brain that makes decisions is likely in rapid decline.

It is dangerous to put that man in control of the RED Button.
Why would John McCain care about education?  He graduated at the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy, plus if people are educated then they can't fall for the good ole republican play on words and tricks they use to get the UNeducated vote.  This is what republicans count on are those people that say the heck with education.. I believe everything that the local news and major news networks tell me.. Uneducated people don't have the mindset to go and research things to make sure they are valid..

Case and point I have people in my family that are well into their 60's and 70's and they are EXTREMELY uneducated and they are so resistant to change or anything new because they are so ignorant to things and ignorance breeds fear and the ability to be manipulated.

Now you see why the fear mongering tactics of the time when John McCain came along work.. Younger more educated people will do research.. We are in an internet based society so you see Mr. McCain we can research and google your a$$.. we don't have to take your word because you are a white haired politician that has been in washington your whole life..

And by the way during the Clinton administration, there was peace and prosperity...not a 2 term adminstration full of an unnecessary war..
It's truly amazing how out of touch the Republican Party is as a whole.

John McCain was born in 1936
Ted Kennedy was born in 1932

Four years separate the two of them, yet Ted Kennedy is and always has been so much more progessive than John McCain could ever be.

The Republican Party is going to have to get used to it - we are in the 21st Century. We are a diverse country - economically and socially. It's the way it was always supposed to be.

This is not going to be a country geared toward just the well to do any longer.

That's why the Republicans are going to lose in November.

Let’s face it. We’re all probably heading into the summer season with few plans to go too far because of not only the price of gas, but  because of the cost of living in general.

Well, that doesn’t mean it can’t be a great summer for our nation. Check out where the democratic nominee is going to be this summer in your area. Pack a picnic basket and a few baseballs and gloves for the kids. Play catch with them.  Take pictures.

Then sit back and listen to the next President of the United States.

Don’t forget a small donation from your entire family. It’s the least we can do for this candidate who will not only change our country, but your children and grandchildren’s future.

Let this be a summer of unity - a summer we all come together and help elect Barack Obama.

By continuing this law enforcement approach that Obama advocates for is "very, very dangerous" and is representing the "mindset of 9/10," claimed the campaign.
------------------------------------------------------
9/10 mindset??!! Er, wasn't George Bush president on September 10th??!!  The WTC attacks happened under HIS WATCH!  And a lot of clear warnings were ignored.
Of course McSame is out of touch when it comes to education.  Like most Republicans, his only concern is making more money for himself and his big business friends.  I guess if you are part of the 3-5% who are millionaires/billionaires, and who care nothing about the citizens of this country, most likely you'll vote for this fraud. On the other hand... the choice is yours.

OBAMA/OLBERMANN, 2008!
i saw the meeting that obama attended with students outside of detroit and it was very effective and he listened and tooks questions from students all were hard question and Obama answered them brilliantly.  I have never heard McCain talk about education and how he plans on making in better.

http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/06/17/gop-trying-to-scare-voters/
Obama should continue to hit McCain on education because McCain doesn't get it at all
I'm glad that someone (Sen. Obama) who's had the experience of trying to pay back student loans is making this a national issue.  I have a sis who just finished med school not too long ago.  She basically has so much debt that if you wrote out the figure you'd think she'd gotten a 30 year mortgage.  It's absolutely terrible!

Thanks Sen. Obama for putting this issue out there!!!!
McCain doesn't have any plans for education. Apparently, only the well-off deserve to get an education.
Sorry, if you want to go to college in this country there is a way without government intervention.  I put myself through college by busting my butt working three jobs and taking loans.  My four siblings did the same.  Of course it was hard-it's not supposed to be easy.  But if you want a degree bad enough, you'll do it - and you'll earn it on your own.
Education Education Education! (Where's my dry erase board?)

Don't forget K-12!  Check out

There are no more good jobs for just high school graduates.  You can't support yourself, let alone a family on $8 -9.00 per hour.  You need at least community college to get up to $13-14 per hour. Bo's plan makes community college essentially free for all students.  This is absolutely vital to maintaining a middle class.  Actually, it's minimal.  Much more is needed.  Getting the banks out of the student loan business makes sense. Thy can make their money in many other ways than saddling kids with outrageous debts just to get educated.  I have friends who are teachers (salary:$35,000) who have $54,000 in student loan debt. This is the first time in history that you find this.  Obama's ideas make sense and are long overdue.
I'm more on McCain's side with this one. I don't think colleges should be nationalized, nor subsidized.

In fact, its the subsidies (federal, state, and alums) that I believe created the problem.

The basic problem is that colleges have had no incentive to control costs. They keep spending more and more, and then pass off those costs to their customers. Inflation has run somewhere between 2 and 3 percent for decades. College tuition and fees have increased about 7 percent a year.

This isn't sustainable. At that rate, the cost doubles about every 10 years or so. If they continue to avoid facing reality and controlling themselves, 10 years from now it will cost twice what it does today.

Then hardly anyone could go. Pricing yourself out of business isn't good business. I say let them fail. Someone will come along with a better deal.

Some colleges will figure out how to provide an affordable education, either through on-line services or some other no-frills approach. And these colleges will thrive, while the ones who continue on their reckless march off the cliff will only squash themselves at the bottom of that fall.

Let the market work, and it will. Don't make taxpayers reward colleges for their ongoing arrogance and stupidity.
To let "hard working Americans" know who is for them, the Obama campaign needs to hammer the education message home!  Education is the doorway to opportunity.  My dad was the first in his family to go to college, and now he has 4 children with advanced degrees (3 MA, 1 PhD)...  That is possible in no other place in the world but the United States.

What a Country!

http://ilfamilypolitics.blogspot.com
Why is it that the McCain campaign believes "competition" is the solution to everything?  The market cannot help us solve education.  We need law makers who are as dedicated and creative as our teachers, who do the job -- without adequate funding, BTW.

80% of this nation is crying right now John McCain!  80 PERCENT!!!

Tax cuts for Exxon and Nuke and Drill is NOT the answer.  Some maverick you are!
Someone needs to address the rising cost of college tuition as well.

Obama seem to addressing some of the issues with the college students.  Obama's on-Campus following and support is as high as any political candidate!!

Depends who you ask.
How do we make "college" affordable?  By making public universities affordable and among the best in the nation.  If Harvard, as a private institution, wants to charge exorbitant tuition rates, taxpayers should not be footing the bill to send students there.  When public schools attract the teachers necessary to make those institutions great, then private schools will have to lower their tuition rates to attract the same levels of students.  If private universities price themselves out of the market, their applicant pool will decline, but if the government pledges to help students pay those exorbitant tuition bills, there is no incentive for the schools to decrease tuition.
This is another reason why I'm voting for Obama.
I'm 23 years old, looking to transfer to a University next year, and college tuition expenses are going through the roof!
I want a President who cares about young students acheiving their dreams in school at more reasonable, affordable costs.
That's why I'm voting for Barack Obama as the next POTUS.
If McCain and the gop are right about, well any issue at all, then I - am certainly out of touch with the American people.
I have heard Obama's plans on education and I think he gets what needs to be done. Also you made it seem as Obama was not touched by that young girls concerns. That would be un-like him and I feel you slanted the edit to make it seem as if he did not care. Everything he has said and written reflects how much he cares. Obama knows what it fells like to be poor! McCain never has and my quess is neither have you.Obama knows how to fix education!
I can NOT believe how long these comments are taking to post.

In need of an intern?????
I graduated from high school in 1976, and in those days, anyone who wanted to go to college could afford to do so. I don't think college is the right path for every teenager, but for kids who want to go on to higher education, it should be possible to go without taking on crippling debt.
This is a shame!  The Republicans have stripped people of their dreams due to their policies over the years.
"I can't go to college because I can't afford the Gas, or there is no affordable health care . . ."

Why do the Republicans insist on defending these policies???!!
I'm a teacher, and I have read Obama'a education plan. It is more in depth, more accurate, and more on target than any plan in the history of the U.S. to help the Education of United States Children.

Furthermore, his plan does not privatize Education like the republicans' plan, which will serve to educate the rich and not the poor (like taxes.)

Anyone who believes he is out of touch need only to  read his excellent educational plan on his web site.

You may also read his speech on education.

Then when you are done reading, you will realize that this man must be our next President because our students, and our future cannot afford someone named McCain who could simply care less about eductation.

When you are steeped in Republican agenda and beliefs all your life the common-good issues are nearly always pushed aside to further worthy-individual goods. Education is seen as a private and individual good for most Republicans. They also don't want to "waste" their money on others who are not as worthy as they or not as hard working as they see themselves. They long ago lost the concept that without educating all young people well, the country and the common good of the nation will suffer. Thus it goes for parks for everyone, basic health benefits for everyone. We are the only industrialized nation that still has a party so fixed on the thinking of the industrial revolution. Rich is good and demonstrates hard work and personal worth. Poor is bad and demonstrates lazyness and lack of personal worth. Rich deserves to be given more because they use it well. That is the heart of their taxing as well. There is ample evidence that the rich do not use it well for the country. Where do they invest? Here in the USA. Give me a break!
We're on the wrong track as a country.
Two choices - Keep the same track, the known evil so to speak.  Or, make a change to the blessings unknown.
Do you have faith?  I have faith.
Not necessarily in Senator Obama but rather the movement of millions of Americans (from all walks of life - Warren Buffett to the janitor in my offc bldg and everyone in between) that has propelled him to this place in time.
I disagree with Senator McCain on his Iraq war stance
I disagree with Senator McCain on his economic policies, especially since his cost $3.7 trillion in tax breaks, nmostly to people who can't make so much money that they aren't going to be wasting time on this msg board
I diagree with Senator McCain on  his health care plans, giving a tax break and then you buy your own mnedical plan. That's gtreat until you get a bad diagnosis and the medical plan puts a pre-ex on that condition, or requires a longer period of time before benefits are paid out on certain conditions, or the medical plan, because there is no administrator for the insurance plan to be beholden to just refuses to cover the condition.  Yep, working in this field for the last 15 years, I've seen it all.
I disagree with Senator McCain on the types of judges he'll appoint like Altio, Roberts, Scalia and Thomas. He's already said he'd look for judges like these, the same who want to overturn Roe v. Wade. Just last year in South Carolina, McCain saidRoe v. Wade should be overturned.

So, there are very pointed reasons, not emotions, as to why I want Senator Obama to win this coming election.

Clinton supporters, the true ones, not the Repubs who mask themselves as if they are HRC supporters, understand that her positions are 90% IDENTICAL to Obama. McCain is about 90% opposite.
So, please don't say he's too liberal, because she would've then been the same.
Please don't say he stole it, more people boted for him than she. Certainly as it pertains to delegates which is how this year primary (and the last 50 years+) have determined the mnominee.  By the way, it's the same process that President Clinton used to get his nomination.

It's time people to step up.  Hope you will.
Marvelous; just Marvelous.

TRUTH- Way to go Barack Obama and the Democratic Party - truth is all we need. We will take back the White House.

LIES - the GOP will not and can not win the Presidency.  Because the America people are fed up with their lies.

The Democrats will continue to make smart Americans so we never let an administration like the current ever in the white house again.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Has John McCain ever had to get or pay off a student loan for him or his children?

I do know both Obama and Michelle have experience with this topic and know it well.
You Obama supporters just don’t get it. Simple said, us former democrats and independents neither like, nor trust Obama. He is ill qualified to lead this nation. For the first time in many years the party had a strong, intelligent, determined, well qualified candidate in Clinton; however the DNC failed miserably in their duty as superdelgates to recognize this. As a result, the party will hear from us loud and clear in November with either a vote for McCain, or a pass all together. (I personally think it should be a vote for McCain because that will result in a net loss of two for Obama).
It’s not that we did not like the message----we did not like the messenger. He is a false prophet, who stole Clinton ideas and solutions and ran his campaign on the chant of Yes We Can. That’s not leadership; his was a perfect example of follow the leader.
Many of us carried the water for the DNC for many years; however we are not allowed to drink from the same well??? We have had enough. These party elitist should have pledged their allegiants based on fact---not fiction. They did not have the courage to realize this and the party will pay a price for their stupidity. They lack the vision and the wisdom to do anything other than pat your own pockets and run from the truth---for shame.
I do not speak for all Hillary supporters, though I do hope I speak for many of them when I say to the party…. you have failed us---you have failed Hillary, and you will once again fail to win the White House. I watched and listen to Hillary ask her supporters to now throw their support to Obama, for the sake of the party. Hillary is a loyalist to the party---why, I’m not sure.
I respect Hillary tremendously, however the party and the process did her wrong and this cannot stand, YES THIS WILL BE A PROTEST VOTE, a vote against the DNC-you need to clean your act up and remember your core constituents, because “Yes We Can” make a difference.
I am not afraid of McCain, he does not represent 4 more years of Bush---no one could possibly be that stupid. I believe him to be a man of honor who will do his best for this country and its people that he cares deeply for, and for that reason I will place my hope with him.
And one more thing, where in the hell does Obama
plan to get all this money to pay for all his
promises?? The war in Iraq won't end in 2 months
MCCAIN AND OBAMA ARE "OUT OF TOUCH" ON THE URGENCY OF DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THE OIL & GASOLINE PRICES.

WE NEED BOTH SHORT-TREM RELEIF AND A LONG-TERM ENERGY INDEPENDENCE PLAN.

DRILL ... BUILD NUCLEAR PLANTS ... NEW ENERGY SOURCES.

------------------------------------------------------
Republican Party have sought to portray the Illinois senator as a liberal elitist who doesn't relate to everyday Americans, because of his stance on issues like gun control (guns kill people), the rights of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay (unconstitutional argument) and his opposition to a gas-tax holiday (more GOP pandering).

Wow this is going to be really easy

Obama 08'
McFossil is not only out of touch with education for young people.....he's out of touch PERIOD.
As an educator, I like the fact that Obama has ideas about improving educational opportunities for people of all ages, from preschoolers to college-aged students. Investing in education is the best investment for our future--better jobs, better economy, etc.
