WHAT THEY’RE UP TO:
Rudy Giuliani showed up in a McCain press release on Obama/terrorism. Joe Biden did the same on the Dem side. And John Kerry joined the Obama conference call.

ON THE RECORD:
Is Obama breaking his supposed ban on talking about the VP selection process? He was asked by an 8-year-old Scholastic News reporter about picking Al Gore, and answered.

The New York Times has his comments: “I have just started looking through possible candidates. I haven’t made any decisions. I’m getting some recommendations... Obviously Al Gore is a great public servant. He was a great vice president. He may not want to be vice president again, since he’s already done that for eight years. But certainly he’s somebody that I’ll be getting advice from as we go forward and hopefully he’ll help me when I’m president.”

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan (D) tells WisPolitics.com that he doesn’t expect to be asked to be his party's running mate, and that he’s not pursuing the job. He cites the impact it’d have on his family. “I’m 38 years old. I don’t see that phone call coming,” Ryan said.

BUZZ-METER:
There’s a new Web site touting Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor (R) for veep. “Eric is a genuine conservative who is known and trusted by conservative voters, but speaks in that rare way among moderates and independents that those voters are also comfortable with him,” said Beau Phillips, one of the site's minders. Cantor is the only Jewish Republican in the House.

The New York Times noted in its profile of Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) that his name has been mentioned in VP speculation, though Defense Secretary is more likely.

CHATTERING CLASS:
Conservative writer Ramesh Ponnuru argues that McCain should not ask a potential veep to get on the same page across the board on policy, as Lieberman was required to do in ’00.

Steve Kornacki calls Sam Nunn the “Cheney option.” “From a political standpoint, he may be exactly what Mr. Obama needs in a running mate: a seasoned, impeccably qualified and wholly reassuring figure... That Mr. Nunn is from a Southern state doesn’t hurt, and that some on the left have begun carping about his conservative record on social issues like gay rights is actually a political plus.”

E-VEEP:
Bobby Jindal sent his listserve an e-mail touting the passage of his sixth tax cut since taking office in January. The repeal of the so-called Stelly Tax “marks the biggest single income tax repeal in the history of our state,” Jindal says.

>>>Is Obama breaking his supposed ban on talking about the VP selection process?<<<

Hmmn, what exactly would you have him say to an 8-year old? I thought his answer was honest and answered the child's question without being condescending, or worse, rude. I'm pretty sure that by 'not talking about the VP selection' he meant with reporters, in the general press, etc. I'm all for calling politicians on their waffling and flip flops, but please.......
I've found myself often laughing over the possible veeps for Obama.  So often, people are saying he needs somebody more experienced and who "knows" Washington.  First, Obama's promise is to "change Washington".  So why is he going to pick an outsider.  Then, why is experience so critical for a veep?  Over and over when people have questioned Obama's experience, pundits and surrogates have responded "experience doesn't matter."  If the #1 guy doesn't HAVE to have experience why does the #2 guy?  HYPOCRITES as usual.  Of course,  when you get a "manufactured" candidate, you can program them to speak but you can't build in the experience.
Curious, who is this Jindal?  There is so many concerns about Obama, have we stopped to look at this guy that McCain is considering...  Is he Muslim, Buddist, could he be trusted as vice president if McCain didnt complete his term...
Gee, First Read, have you read your headlines today?  "Obama attacks McCain" , "anti-Mccain", etc, etc.  Did you have to work real hard today to make EVERY HEADLINE negative toward McCain.  Your bias is unfortunately showing again.  Why don't you just post a "Vote Obama" banner on your page?
I'm just a lowly computer scientist and hobby political enthusiast.  But, I have a theory on who Obama is going to choose for VP.

Obama is going to pick Richardson for his VP and go after the southwest states.  Richardson has the foreign policy and executive experience resume.  #1 reason not to pick Richardson is that he is sometimes not quite ready for prime time.  Obama hires Doyle to handle him.  If anyone needs a handler it's Richardson.  Give him a prominent hispanic handler who happened to have been fired by Clinton, upsetting hispanics, when Clinton started losing.  I think he's angling for the hispanic voters.

With most of the AA and Hispanic voters on his side solid, he could solidify up to a 25% of the voters on his side.  It's clear the youth will be voting.  Get most of the women and the liberals and you have yourself a powerful coalition for winning the whitehouse.

I think that white men and women won't be deciding this election.  I think it's going to be young people and minorities.  Tim Russert had it right 3 years ago that the southwest is what decides this election.
Sorry- Paul Ryan is a conservative Republican from Wisconsin's 1st CD.  I doubt he'll get a call to be VP in either party.
I agree with Adrian at 5:41 EDT. This is a child he's speaking to. And while he "answered" he didn't exactly answer did he? Unless you consider his response of "Gore will be someone who I'll get advice from and who'll help me" as an indication that it WON'T be Gore.

It's early people, just two weeks since he officialy got the nomination. Can we let him catch his breath, get his feet under him a little?
There are a number of qualified candidates to be on the ticket. Come late July, I think this question is very legit.
Anton----

Richardson would not help bring the hispanic vote - because the hispanics do not LIKE Richardson. To them he is a sell out. And by the way - MOST of the hispanic votes ARE NOT with Obama.
Patti Solis Doyle AND Bill Richardson? The Clintons need to be warned off, but that would be nose-rubbing overkill.
I agree with Anton Bursch of WA.  After all the vetting, Richardson will be the pick.  They want to keep it under wraps for now.
Aton Bursch: Yes, let's have Obama pick "Judas" Richardson.  That would sure do a lot to soothe the Hillary supporters!
Does Obama ever answer anything directly with detail? Hope and change? Can he say anything other than a slogan. I think theres a parrot on his his shoulder. He can get all of his loser liberals together to chane the light bulb and hope it lights up.
I don't know if this "NObama" identity is just one person or a group of people who think they're clever for coming up with a concoction of the word "no" and "Obama", but regardless... GIVE IT A REST!  You obviously don't pay attention all day every day because you'll see that sometimes the Republicans are hitting Obama and other times the Democrats are hitting McCain.  Pay attention and you'll see that there is an equal number of stories over the course of any given week or month for either candidate.
Sarah Palin would be an awesome choice for VP for McCain.
It's too bad Sen. Edwards has been rejecting any ideas of an Obama/Edwards ticket. That would have been the complete package. Although, Sen. Reed is a well respected voice in Senate and he would help Obama win 100% of the Rhode Island vote.;)
            Obama/Reed 2008
Eric Cantor? Are you kidding me? That guy is one degree from being a fascist...he wants to bomb Iran too
I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Joe Biden in this discussion. Biden is one of the most experienced democrats, that has an extensive foreign policy knowledge that can combat McCain.
With 14+% undecided at this point the Obama people are worried. They expected a hugh bounce once the primary was over and got nothing. The majority of the undicided are going to break for McCain as they know that less government is better than more. That winning is better than pulling out and being brandished a loser. That he will only serve one term and that 2012 will be avery important election.

Obamas 46 percent is not solid number as there are many Clinton supportes that will stay home or vote mccain. the 41% for McCain is solid and they have no where to go and as long as he vetos spending bills and keeps taxes at where they are now all will be good. I think in the end it will not be close as Mc cain will win easy and he may even steal california. lots of old military guys there and McCains story is more compelling than Obamas.

BTW what ever happen to that clinton lover van reuter.

Roofin I think your right he only has been the nominee for 2 weeks if that, same issue as McCain with these townhall meetings he is pressuring him into them of course McCain has been the nominee for 3 months Obama has to center himself and start getting his agenda out and look at his choices and catch his breath your right, in our present world everything is NOW lighten up people
Nunn, Sebelius, Webb, Bayh...it doesn't really matter that much.  I'm voting for Obama who ever it is.
To Just Curious:
Why is that whenever a candidate is not a white old man, people ask "Can we trust them?" You don't seem to be asking about the trustworthiness of any of the other GOP veep candidates ...

For the record, Bobby Jindal is Roman Catholic. But even if he wasn't, it should make no difference on his trustworthiness.
To Adrian & Roofin Reality:
Did you ever stop to think that he may have been replying to a reporter of 8 years on the job instead of an 8 year old child. Really, what concern does an 8 year old child has about these politics?
If McCain were to pick Colin Powell as his VP, the race would be over tomorrow.
Just curious,
I believe Jindal was Hindu and then converted to Catholic as an adult.
Way to go, Elmer Benson, for catching that mistake on Paul Ryan's party affiliation.
Sen Obama should pick Sen Bob Casey Jr from PA.  The guy is solid and would make a great VP.  He would also be a great fit in the change category since he has not spent a decade in Washington.
Why is there so much hoopla regarding the interest rates issued to to Senator Chris Dodd in 2003. With a simple google search for "2003 Mortgage Interest Rates", one can see that mortgagers were quite commonly receiving ARM rates in the upper 3's to mid 4's.

As a mortgage lender, I am appalled that no one is mentioning this fact. Based upon where rates were at that time, the interest rates received by Senator Dodd are consistent with the market rates. It is amazing that this is getting any play at all. I guess the old saying, "Make them deny it" applies here, but this utter non-sense.
NObama,
don't live and die by what FIRSTREAD puts up for the day. it's just a political blog.  what isn't just a political blog and is worth crying over is the fact that if mccain is president we will be more than just inching closer to environmentally catastrophe and world war 3.  experience isn't all smartie.  SMARTS is.  Obama has it, McCain don't. He thinks about the present only just like any republican with any decisions they make, completely unaware of the effects such decisions may have on people besides their own rich cronies...certainly not the rest of the world or even the rest of America.  I personally would feel safer standing behind a man NOT salivating at bringing a gun to a gun fight, but instead a plan on how to resolve a dispute without shooting and killing in the process.  Figure that analogy out smartie.
Why do people complain about the title of an article so much.  I'm sure if McFlip-Flop hits a home run on a topic the headlines would not say McBush can't keep the ball inside the park.

If you want more favorable headlines for your candidate try contacting him and let him know that you do not appreciate when he screws up.  But don't ask the news to look the other way or gloss things over for him.
On the Dem side, since Strickland is out, its Bayh or Zinni.
Obama/Hagel vs Mr Magoo/Elmer Fudd (Lieberman)

Joe Biden Secretary of State
What a great choice Chuck Hagel would be, proving Obama is serious about uniting the country and ending the disease of partisanship before country.

Obama/Hagel 08
I think that Richardson would be a good choice because he has some of the experiences that could put many of Obama's plans into action.  Besides, many of the foreign leaders that Obama might want/need to talk to, Richardson has already done some speaking with like the North Korean leadership.

There could be a strong pull to have a woman as well.  There have been two female governors mentioned.  I think that might since they are from more typically Republican states, they also would have a good chance.

The one that would have sure shot would be a female Hispanic governor with some foreign policy experince.  I just don't think she exists; if she does, then she isn't interested or has a lot of bagage.
