Obama: Michelle's political makeover

Posted: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 9:45 AM by Mark Murray

The New York Times gets the first look at the Michelle Obama political makeover. From an interview, Michelle Obama addresses the rumor of the videotape that probably was discovered on the virtual grassy knoll. ‘You are amazed sometimes at how deep the lies can be,’ she says in an interview.  Referring to a character in a 1970s sitcom, she adds: ‘I mean, “whitey”? That’s something that George Jefferson would say. Anyone who says that doesn’t know me. They don’t know the life I’ve lived. They don’t know anything about me.’”

VIDEO: Courtney Hazlett reports on the unusual step of celebrity weekly Us magazine going political with a Barack and Michelle Obama cover.

So how did it get to this? "Barack Obama often blurs identity lines; much of his candidacy has seemed almost post-racial. Mrs. Obama’s identity is less mutable. She is a descendant of slaves and a product of Chicago’s historically black South Side. She burns hot where he banks cool, and that too can make her an inviting proxy for attack." More: "The caricatures of Mrs. Obama as the Angry Black Woman confound her, friends say. Her own family crosses racial boundaries — her mother-in-law and a sister-in-law are white — and she has spent much of her adult life trying to address racial resentment.”

“In her freshman year at Princeton, a white roommate’s mother agitated for her daughter to swap rooms. Mrs. Obama was among a handful of blacks at a prestigious Chicago law firm. As a hospital executive, she navigated the often tense line between a predominantly white-run institution and a suspicious black community. But the 44-year-old woman known even to friends as The Taskmaster sometimes speaks with a passion unusual for a potential first lady. She tells voters that ‘Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual — uninvolved, uninformed.”

And then there is the college senior thesis, which has made the rounds on the blogs. "In her senior thesis, she asked: Does immersion in an elite white institution draw blacks away from their community? She surveyed black Princeton alumni, finding their ties weakened after graduation. ‘The path I have chosen to follow by attending Princeton,’ Mrs. Obama wrote in the introduction, ‘will likely lead to my further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society, never becoming a full participant.’ Mitchell Duneier, a sociology professor at Princeton who reviews undergraduate theses, noted that Mrs. Obama rejected some of her own theories. ‘Her senior thesis is being misread as if it is a polemical essay about her alienation,’ Professor Duneier said."

Some interesting advice... “Senator Claire McCaskill, Democrat of Missouri, a close ally of the Obama campaign, says Mrs. Obama must stop sounding like a lawyer trying to win an argument. The trick, she said, is “not pushing so hard to persuade people that Barack is the right one.’ ‘All she has to do is be likable,’ Mrs. McCaskill said.”

"All she has to do is be likable." That about sums it up for Michelle Obama.

CBN's David Brody has a sitdown with Obama in which he expresses disappointment that McCain hasn't spoken out enough on the attacks against Michelle.

The Boston Globe says Obama “has scheduled the inaugural meeting Wednesday of what he's calling his Senior Working Group on National Security. "It includes former members of Congress and high-ranking Clinton administration officials. Among them are three who advised Hillary Rodham Clinton and had served in her husband's Cabinet -- former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Warren Christopher and former Defense Secretary William Perry. Obama also was meeting Wednesday with nearly 40 retired admirals and generals to discuss the state of the military and the challenges in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere."

"Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton plan to meet with some of her top contributors next week in an effort to calm donors who remain frustrated with Obama's presidential campaign," the AP writes. "The meeting is set for June 26 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, several top Clinton fundraisers said Tuesday. The former first lady will introduce Obama to her financial backers."

There is no "makeover" needed for Michelle; she's beautiful, highly intelligent ... and we like her just the way she is!!!

OBAMA/anybodybutHRC '08 & '12
They are giving Michelle a very hard time.    They are using her as a way to scare the American people from voting for Obama.

Michelle may not be the same as Laura Bush, but she is definitely a strong lady who is supporting her husband.  A true display of love!!

Michelle Obama is a strong, intelligent person.  She is an asset to her huband's campaign and a devoted mother.  They work hard for what they have.  That's the American way. Nothing has been handed to them.  That is a true success story.
I read this article, and it was insightful.  Instead of labelling Michelle Obama with whatever "angry" stereotypes seem convenient, we should appreciate the strength and intelligence of this amazing woman.  She does have a role to play -- and it is important.  I think she will be a vibrant and effective First Lady of the United States.

I am so proud to have her as a public figure.

If your first experience at college was your roommate's mother having a nutty because you're a different race would your senior thesis be all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows?
For an educated college woman, Michelle really has about the same brain wave as a high school student.

So she is not as articulate as her husband......
I thought it was her husband that was running for President.....
Wait a second.....Hillary's campaign is miles deep in debt and she is going to give Obama financial advice???????

Whats wrong with this picture???

If Hillary has such high-powered contributors why is her campaign in debt??

Once again.... proof is clear that Hillary isn't content unless the spotlight is on her and she is in control.
I am so thankful she is NOT the nominee.

I am also thankful that Mrs. Obama is NOT a polished, political, Stepford wife clone. Its refreshing to see "normal" people have the opportunity that she has.
I am confident she will show grace, poise, and dignity as together they seem to be strong, spiritual, moral people.
Guess the stereotypes were misplaced.
Our next "first couple" are making the REPeats very nervous.
yes the swiftboat rethugnutz will use race and any and every form of bigotry to their ends but America as a whole is too smart for the haters.  bush/cheney/rove/mccant have only hatred and fear mongering to run on, just look at their record, war based on lies and deceit and run just as incompentenly as katrina, housing, economy and energy independence.
I have been disturbed about the negative race coverage about Michelle Obama and the Obama campaign in general—and the denial of some folks that it is happening.

Last night,  Pat Buchanan actually called it liberal paranoia and tried to deny it all. It was hurtful. I think facing racism and talking it through is needed right now.

Where are our values?— Love thy neighbor—Do unto others the way you would want to be treated—Respect others and their families. You know what I mean.

This is a problem that previous strong, accomplished women whose husbands run for office have had to deal with.  A perfect example is Hillary Clinton when Bill first ran for office.  Remember what happened to her and how many changes she had to undergo to make her palatable to the American people.

I had hoped that we were beyond this but it seems that we are not.  The Media is all over the report that Cindy McCain's cookie recipes are not really hers.  We need a 21st President and they won't have a 1950's kind of wife.  It doesn't happen.  I'm sorry that Michelle has to 'remake' herself.  I thought she was great as she was - an accomplished, smart, devoted, loving, fierce wife, mother and lawyer.
Michele Obama is a loose cannon.  The campaign staff had better give her a role and a script.  Remember Americans don't want a two-for-one in the WH.

Also, I don't think Michele relates well to the American people. She always sems angry.  Why is she angry? Her life has been blessed attending the best schools in America and having a very comfortable life. Their joint filing for 2007 had income over $4,000,000 maybe that is why she can't relate.  I don't see Michele as an attibute to BO's campaign.  They should try to hide her.

Michelle Obama does need makeover; Michelle Malkin does. The headline should be debunking distortions about Michelle Obama. Laura Bush did.
Dear American Voters, reporters and political professionals,

Hon. Senator McCain and Obama, besides each having  many attributes and characteristics. The critical differences between the two of these presidential presumptive nominees are as under:

1. Presidential "Temperament and Composer".
2. Little Washington "insider Versus outsider" experience.
3. "Vision and mission" for our nation future rather than past.
4. American policies, " first U.S.A Centric" than any other country [ ies ] centric.

In my professional opinion  Senator Obama leads in all above qualities.

The need of our next movement and generation is a change. The Change in " past Washington and its Leadership". A change we can believe in and not the seductive, deceptive, and confusing slogan of "leader we can believe in" [? Effexor ?".

Our Greatgrand Nation has to address many present and future challenges and start with  new clean "Slate and Senator".

God Bless America. its diverse people, and our Greatgrand Nation.

Our Greatgrand Nation is needs the CHANGE at every level and for long time.

I am sure Senator Obama with the help of Senator Clinton and her supporters, can deliver that CHANGE.

Please stay involved, stay engaged, and stay informed. Please do not allow any seduction, deception, and or confusion by some partisan media and leaders effect your vote [ Psychological Terrorism ]..

Yours truly,

PS: Please talk about the " Presidential Temperament And Caliber " of our presumptive presidential Nominees. Thanks.
I'll stack Michelle Obama against Cindy McCain any day of the week. She's professional and accomplished; unlike the Heir to a beer fortune who had trouble with over medicating in the past and currently can't give out a simple recipe without plagerizing. She should have added beer as an ingredient to "make it her own". When was the last time Cindy was even IN a kitchen, other than to tell the hired help what she wanted?
New Book:

Facing The Truth About the American Voter, Author Rick Shenkman (Presidential Ambition)

From Publishers Weekly
The author makes the provocative argument that as American voters have gained political power in the last 50 years, they have become increasingly ignorant of politics and world affairs—and dangerously susceptible to manipulation. The book provides a litany of depressing statistics—most Americans cannot name their representatives in Congress, only 20% hold a passport, 30% cannot identify the Holocaust—as Shenkman inquires whether Americans are capable of voting in the nation's or even their own best interests. Although Shenkman clearly derives some pleasure in pointing out the stupidity and irrationality of the American public, his concern is genuine and heartfelt. In lucid, playful prose, he illustrates how politicians have repeatedly misled voters and analyzes the dumbing down of American politics via marketing, spin machines and misinformation. Shenkman initiates an important conversation in this book and makes welcome suggestions to reinvigorate civic responsibility and provide people with the knowledge and tools necessary to efficaciously participate in the political process.

Regarding Michelle Obama, I have heard many of her speeches. She does not need a makeover.

It's the people in this country who need a makeover.

It's amazing how many millions there are who are so unsophisticated, so glued to watching American Idol and reading romance novels to truly understand Mrs. Obama.

If she's a so-called threat to any of you, then go out and do something with your own lives.

Start by reading a newspaper. And searching for truth.
Why change something that is so darling?

Does not need to be changed...
"In her freshman year at Princeton, a white roommate’s mother agitated for her daughter to swap rooms."
-------------------------------------------------

That sounds like a legitimate reason why Michelle isn't quite as gushy about the jingoistic "patriotism" espoused by the likes of beer-fortune heiress Cindy (the recipe plagiarist)McCain. Inheriting a few million dollars is enough to make anyone proud.

BTW: The first time Cindy stole a recipe it was just funny. The second time is not so funny. She's obviously trying to dupe people into believing that she and her hubby are regular down-home folksy people who leave apple pies out on the windowsill to cool. But I'll be that all her meals have been cooked by the hired help for decades.
Michelle is smart, strong, and intense. So what? She loves her husband, children, and this country. She is no more guilty of a lack of love for America, (than you hypocrits out there, who have found fault with this country at times too), looking for reasons to brand her, like so much chattel you believe you should still own.

You call her uppity, high, and mighty, scolding, angry, and on, and on. Given what the primary put the Obama's through, (because they had the audacity to lead, and eventually win it), like Michell, I'd be put out too.

Those of you who want her to shuffle step, with her head down, and a lowered gaze into the Whitehouse, make me sick.

Do we want, or need an abused, uninterested First Lady, just because the post has been the exclusive domain of white females? If so, that is unconscienable.

If this comment angers, or distresses some of you, I'm happy to jolt you from your false comfort zone.

The times they are a changin!
Part of the NYTimes continuing influence on the race.

McCain? Accuse him, with no evidence of an affair.
Michelle? Write a glowing piece that could've (was?) been written by her press flack
So where's the video that the repugnant ones keep talking about that shows Michelle saying "whitey"?  Probably still being manufactured by their fear and smear factory.

Michelle Obama is far better First Lady material than the ancient pill popping Barbie doll that doesn't talk unless she's given her lines.

Go Obama 08/12!
I like Michelle Obama very much.  She is bright, cheerful and intelligent.  We all misspeak and need to clarify our words.  Those that condemn her for not being patriotic are intolerant racists.  Cindy McCain stole from a charity.  That is criminal behavior.  I think her actions are far worse than any words spoken by Michelle.

The cover picture of US weekly is beautiful of the Obama's.

Obama 08
Michelle Obama is an exceptional, strong woman. I don't see how supporters of Hillary wouldn't love her--they have a lot in common. Except, she's black. I love her just the way she is, and hopes she doesn't lose her fire just because some white people are uncomfortable with her passion! And about that supposed tape--whitey? Honestly, where do Republicans think we are, 1960?
Michelle Obama needs to "cool her jets"and focus and exploit any attention given her to "being likeable".  I agree that she has the elements to be a GREAT First Lady.  but, she needs to concetrate on presenting herself as a candidate for FIRST LADY... pick a contemporary, complimentary cause and promote THAT vice echoing Barack Obama's policy stands on issues.   This will enhance Barack's message and show Michelle in a good light, and take her out of the line of fire for the pundits.
