'Timothy J. Russert Highway'

Posted: Wednesday, June 18, 2008 12:42 PM by Domenico Montanaro

Sens. Schumer, Clinton and Rep. Higgins introduced a resolution today to name a portion of highway near the Buffalo Bills' stadium after the late Tim Russert, NBC's Washington Bureau chief and moderator of Meet the Press.

Here's the release:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                         June 18, 2008
SCHUMER, CLINTON, HIGGINS INTRODUCE RESOLUTION TO RENAME PORTION OF ROUTE 20A NEAR RALPH WILSON STADIUM AS ‘TIMOTHY J. RUSSERT HIGHWAY’

Washington, DC – Senators Charles E. Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton along with Congressman Brian Higgins introduced a resolution today to rename a portion of U.S. Route 20a that runs near Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills, after Tim Russert. The stretch of U.S. Route 20a located in Orchard Park, New York, that runs from Abbot Road to California Road, will be designated as the ‘Timothy J. Russert Highway,’ in honor of the NBC Washington Bureau Chief and moderator of Meet the Press who passed away last Friday. Russert, a native son of Buffalo, New York was an avid sports fan who was passionate about his hometown football team the Buffalo Bills.

VIDEO: Byron W. Brown, mayor of Buffalo, N.Y., discusses the impact Tim Russert had on his hometown.

“Though he redefined Washington for generations to come, Tim Russert was always—to his very core—Mr. Buffalo,” said Schumer. “He was a shining example of the very best in Western New York—a down-to-earth, family man with rock solid values and an irreplaceable twinkle in his eye. He always cared about the Bills, and whenever I went on Meet The Press, we’d spend a few minutes before or after the show talking about the team. By naming this portion of Route 20a in his honor, we hope that Tim Russert will never be far from the home he loved so dearly.

“Tim Russert was loved and respected throughout the halls of Washington for his journalistic integrity and trademark tenacity – but during all of his years in D.C. he remained a true Buffalonian at heart,” said Senator Clinton. “Some people may not have understood why he would sign off of a hard-hitting political talk show with a hearty ‘Go Bills,’ but if you knew Tim you knew it made perfect sense. I hope that by renaming this stretch of Route 20a near Ralph Wilson Stadium in Tim’s honor, that it will in some way bring him closer to the city and team he loved so much.”

“Whether it was talking about growing up in South Buffalo in his books or using the NBC bully pulpit to cheer on the Bills before a big game, to many, Buffalo helped define who Tim was.  Buffalo was always in Tim’s heart and Tim will always live on in the hearts of Western New Yorkers.  It’s only fitting that from now on, Bills fans driving down “Timothy J. Russert Highway” will always reminded of this hometown hero and personification of the 12th man.”

“The proposal to rename the stretch of U.S. Route 20a that runs next to the stadium in honor of Tim Russert is a wonderful tribute to a great man. I want to thank Senator Clinton, Senator Schumer and Congressman Higgins for their efforts to make this happen.  I, like many others, was shocked when I heard the sad news of Tim’s passing. We loved Tim and he loved Buffalo and the Bills,” said Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson, Jr.

Wonderful gesture for a wonderful man.
This is so well deserved.  I'm very glad they were able to do this in Tim Russert's memory.  Thank you for posting this.  I know this is a tough day for all of you, so hang in there and know our thoughts are with you.
That's nice....
A little timeout for Tim Russert......

Now let's get back to why Liberals don't want gas prices to go down......
What a great and fitting tribute.  What a country!

Go Hill! Soften the press a little for 2012. McCain can't get reelected if he's running against you.
That's fine, and fitting, but I hope the Democrats don't embarrass themselves with Tim's passing. They (the Democrats) tend to turn funerals and memorials into campaign rallies.
Why do they always do things after someone dies? Shouldn't they do them before the person dies, you know, so they can enjoy it too?

And Go Obama!!
To honor a man who always honored his home town and family.  I will look forward to driving that section of road when I am in that area.  I wish it were an honorary mention (meaning he was alive) rather than memorial since he has since gone beyond us.
Nice honor for an even nicer man.
"Now let's get back to why Liberals don't want gas prices to go down......"

Huh. And I thought Republicans were opposed to controlling prices  ;)

McCain won't be elected in the first place so it won't be a problem
Good idea he was the last of the great ones like Walter Cronkite
Absolutely!

It's too bad that someone did not think of this before he passed - I'll bet he would have gotten a kick out of it!

God bless all of you at NBC/GE today.
Hey PUMA LOSERS...Head-on over to Faux Noise....Your Home is waiting!

Great news for Tim!

Obama/Biden '08

Wonderful!! Very fitting tribute to someone I didn't know personally but have come to know through all the coverage and the amazing stories his fellow co-workers and friends have shared over these past several days.
To Chuck and the rest of the group there...I am sure today has to be especially hard for all of you and just wanted to pass along my well wishes and hope that before too long some normalcy will return to both your professional and personal lives. Go Get Em!!
Very nice gesture Chuck, Hill & Higgins!  I really applaud this.  Very nice!
I laughed out loud this a.m. listening to Obama surrogate Susan Rice.  When asked if Obama were captured, would Obama agree he has rights to be tried in US courts?  Her response was that if they had the opportunity they would KILL Obama.  But, if they only captured him, then he had to had full habeas corpus rights.  Now, let me see, killing somebody without a trial is okay, no violation of rights. But, damn, if we can't kill you, then we have to respect your rights.  Do you Obamatons see the ridiculousness of your Messiah's position?

UMMMMMM.....Do you really expect to be taken seriously? How can you possibly think that anyone is going to take you seriously when you do not know the name of the most wanted terrorist in the world? Are you ignorant or just acting like a 3rd grader? WOW! Great post!
No disrespect to Tim Russert. He is my hero. I think he would want us all to call out such ignorance in this country.

Bravo!
Bobbi from Eau Claire and jerry in Wherever, your crass comments at this poignant moment are spectacular in their bovinity
This is my first foray into the political process. My daughter's enthusiasm for Senator Obama's campaign turned out to be contagious, and I found myself refreshing the screen every 3 minutes the night of the Ohio, and Texas primaries, praying for an Obama upset.

I can't remember now, but somehow I stumbled onto this blog, for better, or for worse, (I have no doubt Nobama would say for worse, as I have been taken to task a time or two by him/her).

As a result, I have made many new friends, including, the First Read Family; Chuck, his team of reporters, as well as, many of my fellow posters.

In addition, some of the pundits such as Abrams, and Olbermann have become important to me too, but non more than Timmy.

I came to trust Mr. Russert almost overnight.

If his team make a commitment to always consider, 'what would Tim do'?; in any given situation that has to do with the caliber of journalist they hope, and strive to be, we will all be fine. Timmy's legacy will have done it's job.
Good! I'm glad.  He should be honored.  I will miss him alot!
Now let's get back to why Liberals don't want gas prices to go down......

The same reason we "liberals" don't want tobacco prices to go down: We have to cut the addiction, before it destroys us.

Really Jerry, you aren't even a challenge anymore.
Tim Russert, it couldn’t have happened o a great person. The next time I’m in the Big Apple I’ll pay my homage.

FYI: Pat Buchanan, Depicting Barack Obama as a monkey is neither celebrating the first African American as the presumptive Democratic nominee nor is it liberal paranoia. It is blatant racism. African Americans are not sub-human.  Gorillas, apes, monkeys, or any other sub-human species is not the DNA of people in the African Diaspora.

Your paternal grandmother, the daughter of a Confederate officer, and your great-grandfather who fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side would be very proud of you.

The more you make racist remarks; the more I see you think /conger them to be factual. MSNBC should only let you read the news facts.

I applaud Dan Abrams for seeing you as divisive. I see you as a loser. The Church should ex-communicate you. My Baltimore catechism didn't contain the hatred you spew. You are the devil.
Tim Russert would never have used your tactics in the electoral process. You,
Pat, deserve your own separate hell.

P.S. neither would Keith or Chris.
Go Hill! Soften the press a little for 2012. McCain can't get reelected if he's running against you.

Although you've recently touted your vast "education" your posts indicate otherwise. This is a post regarding a tribute to Tim Russert and NOT Hillary Clinton. Give it up already......and perhaps demand of refund from whatever "educational" institution you think you went to; they clearly failed you.
Bobbi, this is a memorial blog post. Show a little respect and keep your propoganda off of this PLEASE. Some people have no class.

I think this is an excellent idea. He certainly deserves it!
Its wonderful to see the polititions love the press so much they will name a highway after them .Isnt the press supposed to be a thorn in the side of the powerful and not a mouthpiece to be used to get a message across,"WE WILL BE TREATED AS...." Come on he watched and listened as the whitehouse sent liar after liar onto meet the press ,hardball "WE are all NEOCONS NOW " Dont worry MSNBZZZZ has seen the light and is now fox news left why would anybody want a bunch of talking heads agreeing on everything LEFT OR RIGHT.THE PRESS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE PEOPLES EYES ON POWER NOW THEY SHOW UP AT STATE DINNERS AND SUCH AS IF THEY ARE THE PEOPLE THEY SHOULD BE WATCHING . Remember bush had a high rating once somebody liked him didnt make him worthy but people are wrong you just hope the press isnt so gullible
Nice tribute to a great man.  And the first time I ever heard of Chuck Schumer doing something intelligent.
Jerry, your shortsightedness is what has us in this predicament. Remember 7 years ago when there were tax breaks for buying large, gas guzzling vehicles (to boost the economy, but only for vehicle manufacturers). There was NO ATTEMPT to even try to curtail USE. We USE too much fuel, THATS the problem. There is no shortage, We USE too much. Your mentallity will have us attacking Saudi Arabia.....

p.s. Rest in Peace, Tim
Awesome!!! Loved the man...love our country in honor of Tim Russert

Obama 08
This is awesome, and amazing that it was done in such a timely manner.
"Go Hill! Soften the press a little for 2012. McCain can't get reelected if he's running against you."..

Pathetic... Bobby, for the good of the Democratic Party and America... GET OVER IT!!!

Obama '08 '12
I think that is a nice gesture, but I'm a little miffed.  I enjoyed watching Tim Russert political interviews and commentaries as much as anyone, but we are treating him as though he did something great for America, like find a cure for polio or negoitiated the release of captives held by terrorists.  Russert publicly was a good political journalist.

There are alot more people active in their communities locally and nationally, that deserve just as much if not more attention for their works on earth.
A very appropriate tribute to Tim and his Bills!

It's nice to see princess Hilly doing SOMETHING during her paid month-long vacation.  Too bad it isn't for something in addition to honoring Tim Russert, like voting against the FISA bill, off-shore drilling, etc.
Jerry, in Corpus Christi...

GET A LIFE...
It's a perfect way to honor Tim Russert.  It's refreshing to see one of "the good guys" get recognition for a change.  Every time that someone driving the roadway sees the sign think of the man it was named for.
What a thoughtful and appropriate gesture.  Thank you Senator Clinton, Senator Schumer and Congressman Higgins -- you are using your positions in a wonderful, meaningful way.
Tim Russert deserves everything that we bestow to him.  This person in my opinion was the greatest journalist ever and there's no one that can replace him.  He would have been one heck of a politican too. Sunday mornings (Meet The Press) will never be the same.  MY condolences to his family.
Bobbi from Eau Claire-

You are an idiot
Go Hill! Soften the press a little for 2012. McCain can't get reelected if he's running against you.

Bobbi, Eau Claire, WI

This is not about Hillary
He made us proud..
Awesome!  I have been a fan of Tim Russert since before the 2000 election.  Whenever he was a guest, I would turn up the volume to listen to his insight. Sadly I took his presence for granted and thought he would always be there for all of us. My grief for the loss of this man I never met has been
unexpected.  One man can truly make a difference!

God bless you Tim Russert.
