McCain camp pounces on Obama move

Posted: Thursday, June 19, 2008 10:34 AM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray and Chris Donovan
Not surprisingly, the McCain campaign quickly condemned Obama's decision to opt out of the public financing system for the general election.

VIDEO: In a video announcement on his campaign Web site, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says he's opting out of the public campaign finance system.

"Today, Barack Obama has revealed himself to be just another typical politician who will do and say whatever is most expedient for Barack Obama," said communications director Jill Hazelbaker in a statement. "The true test of a candidate for president is whether he will stand on principle and keep his word to the American people. Barack Obama has failed that test today, and his reversal of his promise to participate in the public finance system undermines his call for a new type of politics."

In 2007, Obama filled out a questionnaire for the Midwest Democracy Network, in which he said he would participate in the public financing system for the general election. "In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election," Obama wrote. "My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge."

"If I am the Democratic nominee," he added, "I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election."

At February's Democratic debate in Cleveland, the late Tim Russert asked Obama about whether Obama would renege on his pledge to accept public funds. Obama answered that he wanted to sit down with McCain after becoming the nominee.

"Tim, I am not yet the nominee. And what I have said is, when I am the nominee, if I am the nominee -- because we've still got a bunch of contests left, and Senator Clinton is a pretty tough opponent -- if I am the nominee, then I will sit down with John McCain and make sure that we have a system that is fair for both sides. Because, Tim, as you know, there are all sorts of ways of getting around these loopholes."

But according to Obama spokesman Bill Burton, the Illinois senator never sat down with McCain. "In the past couple of weeks, our campaign counsels met and it was immediately clear that McCain's campaign had no interest in the possibility of an agreement. When asked about the RNC's months of raising and spending for the general election, McCain's campaign could only offer its expectation that the Obama campaign would probably, sooner or later, catch up," Burton said in an email to First Read. "And shortly thereafter, Senator McCain signaled to the 527s that they were free to run wild, without objection."

Yet as Politico's Ben Smith points out, a well-funded GOP 527 has yet to emerge this presidential cycle.

*** UPDATE *** Per ABC, McCain's counsel Trevor Potter denies negotiating with Obama's counsel on this matter.

McCain is comical, he cant the audiences he would like for town meetings, so he asks Obama, he cant get Obama to fund his campaign in the manner he would like because he can't raise the money.  Its really sad, however, LMAO!
He was smart to do this because McCain would not, and could not control the 527s. Besides McCain you are the biggest Flip Flopper I have ever seen run for President.
They are soooooooo jealous that Barack is going to have so much money, they don't know what to do with themselves. McCain is a fossil who can't compete, he might as well just give up now.
I'm going to have to agree with above posters. If she would have been there in the front with her head scarf on, Fox News would be all over it, giving the great I TOLD YOU SO..GOTCHA!!

================

Obama supporters, if nothing else, certaintly know how to stay, shall we say, "focused". Obama's campaign behaves in a racist fashion? Blame Fox. Obama flip flops on any number of issue? Blame McCain. Obama doesn't have a plan to solve any problem? Blame conservatives.

Obama supporters are typical liberals. Never take responsibility, and always blame someone else for your problems.
okay, Obama supporters. We're waiting for the explanation.  Oh, I know the answer.  Obama never said that; the article is misquoted.  Along those same lines, the Iraqi minister Obama spoke with says that in their conversation Obama presented a different stance than he publickly does regarding removing troops from Iraq.  Of course, Axelrod basically called the Iraqi minister a liar this morning and ONE MORE TIME "Obama never said that." Way to go, Obama. Is this how it's going to go when you run out and talk with the world leaders?  They'll all be liars when they tell the truth?  When are people going to get the picture on Obama?  Fake. Fraud.
"And shortly thereafter, Senator McCain signaled to the 527s that they were free to run wild, without objection."

That's the critical line right there.  If Obama only accepts public money, then all of the "Willie Horton" style ads, the "Contact Barack Obama and ask him why he is a Muslim", "Michelle Obama once met with black power leaders, smoked crack, called somebody Whitey, and said she wanted to eat babies.  Do you want this as the first lady?" advertisements would run rampant - and Obama wouldn't have the funds to fight them.

His campaign is financed by people, not by PACs.  So until we can deal with the 527 groups, I guess we'll just have to stick with financing as it is.
The McCain camp should be wary of opening itself up to a fresh debate concerning "standing on principle."
McCain has no room to talk about keeping principles, especially not after the Enron Loophole story last night on "Countdown" and the pandering principles flip on oil drilling in eco-preserved areas of the US yesterday. McCain has absolutely no chance in this election and really should be pinned to the wall by the media for his dirty political career.

America has the choice: Candidate of the People vs. Candidate of the Business & Oil Lobbyists. I think we know what we are all tired of.
It is a joke that navy man American hero John McCain has to put up with a cheating liberal liar who isn't in the same class. It is there plan to tax all the people black and white and even the muslims for stupid things not to win our wars in the middle east and not to get our oil out of Iraq and then they would say Ok to Iran we will do what you want and where.  John McCain for president and Huckabee hopefully for VP Listen to Rush for the truth and check out Jack in Dallas comments.
I don't hold it against the man for winning and creating the biggest grass roots movement in recent political history. What do you expect McSame's campaign to say. They're scared s@#tless, with good reason.
Get out your guns to fire and your bibles for brimstone.

IT'S BITTER TIME!

This is Obama's way of telling McCain "put up or shut up." I hope that, once people see that Obama's getting massive internet and grassroots funding and McCain can't hang with it, they will realize we have the mo', and they'll want to be swimming with the wave before they drown in it.
"Beggar Boy" McCain is just jealous that the free market is backing Barack Obama while the beggar boy has to go on the federal dole to help finance his losing campaign.  Just shows he's just lying about being fiscally responsible to us taxpayers.

Barack Obama never promised that he would use federal funding for his campaign, just that he would pursue looking into it.  Barack Obama is being fiscally repsonsible to the taxpayers by opting out of federal funding.

Only Barack Obama will bring back the honesty and integrity that has been missing from the White House the past 7+ years.

Conservatism is a Disease!

Go Obama 08/12!
funny, the flip-flopping led by lobbyist McCain talks about Obama opting out of public financing like its a crime.  The difference between Obama opting out is he doesn't accept pacs or funds from lobbyists.  Why hasn't McCain dumped Mr. Black yet?
I am an Obama supporter and I could tell early on that he was probably going to opt out of the public financing -- that being said it's not the worst thing that could be done --especially since he's already shown himself to be a good manager of the money his supporters have donated to his campaign.
Not at all surprised.  I wonder what on earth it will take for all the Obama supporters to come down off their high-horse?  Are you still in Disney Land for your "chosen" one?

New kind of politics....my @#$!^@^!
This issue is not one the typical voter will care about because it does nothing to put more food on the table, more money in one's wallet, or make us more secure.

Nice try McBush, McDependsWearer, McTemperTemper, McGeritol, Mc"WhereAmI?"
John McCain, pro-torture 'maverick'

Pro-Big Oil 'Independent' ?

Anti-Haebus Corpus 'Reformer' ?

From Huff Post:

'... CNN's Jack Cafferty Rails At John McCain's Constant Flip-Flopping

It's not everyday that Senator John McCain's tendency to switch positions on important issues - even seminal McCain issues like torture - are greeted by the media with anything other than a swoon over the candidate's marvelous "maverick" style of policymaking. But on CNN today, Jack Cafferty did just that, unspooling a litany of McCain's inconsistencies and saying, "If John McCain doesn't stop changing his position on the issues, he threatens to make John Kerry look like an amateur."

CAFFERTY: If John McCain doesn't stop changing his position on the issues, he threatens to make John Kerry look like an amateur. In order for McCain to win in November, he has to appeal to both the traditional Republican base and to independents. Dana Milbank in the Washington Post says that's a delicate dance, and if McCain's not careful, "he's liable to break a hip." Of course, any doctor will tell you a broken hip can be very difficult to recover from.

On Iraq, the economy, guns, and God, McCain is to the right. On immigration, campaign finance reform, and global warming, McCain is to the left. Sort of reminiscent of John Kerry back in 2004. McCain went after Barack Obama yesterday for proposing a windfall tax on the oil companies. A month ago McCain said he was willing to consider a windfall tax on the oil companies. What about offshore drilling? During his run for president in 2000, McCain was against it. Now he's for it, saying the state should decide if they want to drill for oil off their coastlines. This could cost him big-time in states like California and Florida which are very environmentally conscious. Then there are the Bush tax cuts, McCain was against them - twice - now he's for them. McCain has also called for the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay to be closed down, and torture banned. But last week he criticized the Supreme Court's ruling that detainees there should have access to U.S. courts, calling the Supreme Court decision one of the worst decisions in the history of this country. So here's the question. How clear is it where John McCain stands on the issues?...'

John McCain: Bomb, bomb, bomb ... Bomb, Bomb Iran

Take a nap John, it’s been a long morning

Mr. McSame, your campaign is broke, period.  Sen. Obama doesn't have to scrounge and beg for campaign contributions because we, the people, donate to his campaign. Sen. Obama is obligated to us, and not big business and lobbyists unlike you. The people want Sen. Obama as the next POTUS, it's as simple as that.

OBAMA/OLBERMANN, 2008!
IF McCAIN CAN MAKE OIL & ENERGY THE TOP ISSUE IN THIS CAMPAIGN, HE WILL BEAT OBAMA.

The exorbitant price of imported oil can push our economy in a “depression”.

WHICH IS THE BETTER SOLUTION TO OUR OIL & ENERGY CRISIS?

1.) DRILL FOR OIL, ON USA LANDS & WATERS, WHERE THERE IS A KNOWN & VAST AMOUNT OF OIL (estimated 20 billion barrels)?, and
2.) BUILD NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS TO SUPPLY A VAST AMOUNT OF OUR ELECTRIC POWER NEEDS?

- OR, as OBAMA proposes -

3.) RESEARCH & DEVELOP NEW SOURCES OF ENERGY and DEVELOP THE MEANS TO UTILIZE THOSE NEW ENERGY SOURCES?

Obama argues that drilling for oil will not yield results for 10 years.  How long does Obama think it will take to develop and implement the “new energy sources” so as to yield significant results?  Probably longer since it is “unproven.”  (Remember the idea of using ‘corn’ to produce a renewable energy source has caused a shortage of farmlands and increased prices for corn!)

IF WE LIFT THE CONGRESSIONAL BAN ON DRILLING FOR OIL ON USA LANDS & WATERS ---- IT WILL HAVE AN IMMEDIATE EFFECT TO LOWER IMPORTED OIL PRICES BECAUSE IT WILL SEND A CLEAR MESSAGE TO THE OIL PRODUCING COUNTRIES THAT “WE MEAN BUSINESS” TO RELIEVE OURSELVES OF DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

A long-term energy plan must be developed, which includes cost-effective and renewable energy sources ---- but we cannot fool ourselves into thinking that our economy and way of life can suffer the current oil & gasoline prices, for long, without irreparable harm TO OUR ECONOMY AND STANDARD OF LIVING..

THE WAY FOR JOHN McCAIN TO DEFEAT OBAMA IS TO  ……………………..
“MAKE OIL AND ENERGY THE TOP ISSUE IN THIS CAMPAIGN”.

I couldn't care less about what McCain says or thinks about Senator Obama opting out of public financing!

Tell us, McCain, about the Enron loophole.  That's what I want to hear about.  Please do explain when you knew and maybe just how much you are benefiting from the loophole?  Come on--fess up!  This is all I want to hear from the McCain camp.  Period.

Senator Obama is the only decent selection for President of the United States!
Condolenses to the MSNBC family. I have to say the best decision he has made to date, i rather donate my money. But what i don't get about MSNBC as well as the rest of the mediaoutlets is you do not hold McCain to task or ask tough questions. The coverage seems more like protecting a buddy than reporting or investigative journalism. Please raise the public discourse to one of intellectual stimulation, challenge yourselves and the audience. I doubt anything will change or this will be posted. Raise the bar, please.
Here's the problem Mr. McCain....
YOU opted in then out of public financing to get him through the primaries?? hmmm.... at least Obama never actually opted in. He said he would CONSIDER it. You have done NOTHING to show you would work in good faith if they both took public financing. You have not tried to stop the Republican 527 groups. You are all but begging the Republican attack dogs to be let loose, while Obama has heavily urged his supporters to NOT support 527 attack groups.

Did I mention McCain's "informal" (aka McCain doesnt want this guy linked to him, but he wants his help) adviser Karl Rove runs a 527? hmmm....
It's sick that the Presidency can be bought.

Public funding of individuals are fine but the bulk of Obama's money is from thousands and even millions of dollars from special interest groups and Persons like Soros...

Yawn. McCain is just mad Obama can raise more money than he can. Meanwhile, I just read that if we were to open our coasts AND Alaska to oil drilling, it would only save us 3 cents a gallon beginning in 2027. But McCain and Bush trumpet lifting the ban as if it will immediately lower gas prices. If there is one thing I hate, its being lied to by the President about public policy. Sure, politicians are weasels, but lieing about the effects of a course of action? How is democracy supposed to work if the electorate is given twisted facts?
Obama did the right thing. I want my money to go to him and not some 527.
This is a giant reversal in fortune

Traditioally, Republicans have had a fund raising advantage

The internet has changed that dynamic, to give Democrats the advantage

Is there ANY DOUBT that McCain would REFUSE public financing if he had a fund raising advantage ?

Sorry, Obama has an advantage, and he should make FULL USE OF IT !!

McCain WON'T DECIDE the terms of fund raising or the terms of debates.
There's only one Decider
(and he's having trouble putting on his socks)

Don't worry, John you've already lost the election..

Obama/Edwards '08
REAL REFORM
Public Financing? We the public are financing his campaign. Being the public has no interest in McCain's campaign, I can see why he is whining about it
Obama. An inexperienced lier. Whose the flip flopper?
He will lie, cheat, or do anything to get elected. I hope Hillary is not the VP, because after for years of this man, she will run again and win. Democrates will see their error very soon after he is in office.
This is just another piece of proof of the lies and deceit of the Obama campaign. Liberalism is all about feeling good for the moment, and that is why Obama said at the time he'd take public financing. Then it made sense, and it felt good. Now though, it doesn't make sense, and something else (private funds) makes sense and that feels good. Obama's lies about sitting down with McCain which again made him look magnanimous at the time, and willing to work with others. When push came to shove though, Obama went back to his old habit of 'What benefits me today?'.

This is exactly how an Obama presidency will run. He'll say all the right words one day, but the next day Obama will do what's good for him, and not anyone else. Obama is nothing more then a liberal navel gazer, only interest in what benefits himself.
McClain is very funny!  We will see if he is still smiling in November!!!

Obama is already funding his campaign in a more truly populist way with more small contributions from more ordinary people than any campaign in history.  It already IS publicly funded in the truest sense of the word and his broad base has already defeated the Clinton big donor juggernaut.

Combine that with the unprecedented level of new voter registration inspired by the Obama campaign and what you have is a whole new ball game in which the ordinary American voter is SELF-empowered to compete with the big boys WITHOUT reliance on the feds.  For the first time, we are no longer being rolled over by the big donors.

McCain shouldn't look to get too much traction on this one.  He should look to the softness of his support as evidenced by anemic fund-raising and the fact that people who support Obama base that support on positive feelings toward Obama while people who support McCain largely seem to base that support on negative feelings for, once again, Obama.  Almost no one is raving about positive feelings for McCain.

Then there are the latest polls showing an outside the margin lead for Obama in FLORIDA,  not to mention Ohio and PA.  Obama already has public financing:  We, the public. The sound you hear is our roar.
I'd say that he followed his promise to the letter. His people did try to compromise with McCain on mitigating the 527's, and when McCain proved to be weak on any proposals to control them, Obama knew that compromises would not occur.
it would have been stupid if obama didn't opt out of public finance

                 Hey everybody !!!!

Send a dontation to the Barack Obama for President campaign. $5, $10, $50, $100 -whatever you can afford.

He has a whole lotta states he has to travel to. And that means a whole lotta plane fares.

If the idiots in the media believe Michelle Obama needs a "makeover", then let's all help her. This country needs a "makeover". First things first. We need to bring kindness, warmth and intelligence back to the White House.

That is not the republican party.

Barack and Michelle Obama 2008.
Uh, what part of 2 million donors isn't "publicly financing"?

http://infogiant.wordpress.com/
With all the flip flop flap, can anyone believe what McCain says anymore?

Good move Obama !!
Obama's opting out of public financing should be no surprise to anyone...least of all McCain.
All I can say is too bad, so sad Senator McCain..get over it.
OBAMA 08
All typical politicians do or say what is most expedient for Obama? Huh?

Maybe McSybil should run these quotes past someone before sending them out.
The Bush/McCain supporters are getting boring. "Obama will raise taxes"! Wrong. His economic plan will result in overall decreased taxes in people earning less than $250,000/ year.
Fact: McCain's economic proposals are not credible, feasible and are pure fantasy:
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/the_budget_according_to_mccain_part_i.html
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/the_budget_according_to_mccain_part_ii.html
His "offshore drilling" policy has been panned as being yet another attempt at pandering to a gullible public:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/19/opinion/19thu1.html?emc=tnt&tntemail0=y

The fact is that McCain has no clue about the economy; and unfortunately he lacks the mental capacity to learn (894 out of 899 in his academy class). He would be a disaster on so many levels for this country.

His support of the Iraq War has been exposed for what it is: a means to eliminate Saddam Hussein. Why? WMD's? No. Ties to Al Qaeda? No. Reduce the terrorist threat? No.
The real reason was so that western and American oil companies could control Iraqi oil through a series of no-bid contracts!:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/19/world/middleeast/19iraq.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&th&emc=th
Halliburton controls the market for the accessory oil production supplies. Dick Cheney made $2.7 million according to his 2007 tax returns; his VP salary is $190,000. Who is profiting on this war? Take a guess.
Now McCain wants to continue this immoral war that has cost more than 4100 American soldiers lives. So Cheney et. al. can continue their blood money profits.

The Bush/McCain supporters should be ashamed. Patriotic? Right. I guess you are wearing your flag pin, right?
Please, this has NOTHING TO DO WITH McCain!!!

Barak made a promise to use public financing, and to work with the republican nominee to do so.

He has chose to do NEITHER!!

To blame McCain does not resolve him from his promise.  Frankly I think it was a dumb idea to even say he would, but once you do you can't change your mind and blame someone else without looking like a fool.
How is John McCain a war hero? The fact that he was dumb enough to be shot down in Vietname? Spent 5 years in an exhalted status? Went to naval academy because his father was an admiral and graduated bottom 5 percentile in class??? Ditched his first wife because she got disabled?? Flip flopped on every important issue from environment to war to the courts?? He cannot even raise funds for primary without using public financing as a collateral.
And incidentally he wants to send YOUR children to war.
What has he done to make him a hero? Also show me one useful bill made to law where he has worked accross the aisle in defiance to Bush. He didi not even vote on his own bill on immigration. What does that say about him?
This is comical to see the Obama people saying it doesn't matter.  Any time McCain has even slightly contradicted a prior position, you all have jumped down his threat.  Here, Obama himself proposed something, and then chose not to do it.  So how are they defending it?  Oh he's just jealous.  Give me a break.

And as for talks about the 527s, what the heck do you call MoveOn and all of the unions?  George Soros will be writing checks nonstop over the next few months to finance those disgusting ads.
"Obama supporters, we're waiting for the explanation."

Really, McCain supporters?  Apparently your team can't read any better than you can run a campaign:  The full explanation is in Barack's statement.  Argue its merits as you wish, but don't pretend that it's not there.

You have a weak and embarassing candidate.  You might want to find some real issue to focus on, this one is not going to get you very far.
It seems funny that the McCain Campaign can deride Obama for opting out of the public financing, when his campaign violated campaign finance laws during the Republican primaries.
1. Not paying Cindy McCain for the use of her plane.

2. Using campaing financing as collatoral on a loan when his campaign was broke.

3. When his campaign was successful in gaining some funraising, he decided to opt out of the public campaign financing.

If you want four more years of corruption, deception, and secrecy, Vote McCriminal.

Go Obama!
With all the problems around the country (floods / inflation / educational funding) how come the american public is donating to either one of these idiots. If they would donate that money to the Redcross or projects that will benefit schools and kids, we wouldn't have to wait four years to see if the new president can attempt to solve these issues.

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF - DON'T VOTE, ACT!
Not suprised but a little disappointed in my candidate Obama.  He never said he would accept public-financing but agreed to "aggressively pursue a public-financing plan".

However, I don't blame Obama for opting out.  His campaign will need the money to combat the smears from the 527 groups.
Obama would have been a fool to accept public financing.  The people are financing his campaign.  I guess it time to write another check to the Obama campaign, to counter the Republicans lies about the man and his family.
"Stand on principle" just means "stay the course"!!!!

Obama recognizes the situation, know what's best for his campaign and the American people, and adjust accordingly.

That's not flip-flopping, that's using common sense!

If Rumsfeld had "flip-flopped" on his strategy in Iraq after we were not greated as liberators, he would still have a job
Oil is McCain's secret weapon in the campaign?

He wants to drill, which, according to the best figures I've seen (see Time Magazine today) would produce, at best, a 3 - 4 cent reduction in fuel prices in 10-15 years.

Welcome to the crazy world of John McCain, proposing measures that have huge benfits to oil companies, and virtually none to the people.

McCain doesn't have the standing in the republican party or the strength of character to control the members of his own party, let alone the slimy 527's that will post true filth in their own interest.  Why would Obama, who is taking the only true route of public funding through our donations, allow himself to be hamstringed by this campaign limit when McCain can't meet the criteria of controlling the 527's personal attacks?  It's the same old politics for McCain, he wants to benefit from the old ways while holding his opponent to a higher standard.  Not this time.
