Fred's back, baby

From NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy and NBC’s Lauren Appelbaum
CHICAGO, Ill. -- In what is quickly becoming a daily occurrence, the McCain campaign held yet another conference call with a former presidential candidate to attack Obama on his national security credentials.

This morning the former candidate-of-the-day was former Sen. Fred Thompson, but the call began off topic with a brief statement on Obama’s decision to forgo public financing.

After admitting he would prefer to talk about national security, Thompson later agreed with communications director Jill Hazelbaker that Obama’s decision to opt out of the public financing system was “another example of him doing whatever’s necessary to achieve his goal.”

“He's for public financing, you know, when it looked like it was for his benefit,” Thompson said. “When the moment that it looked like it would not benefit him, he turned his back on it and then will not acknowledge what he's doing. So there's only one word for that and that's typical.”

The more pressing matter -- at least as far as Thompson was concerned -- was once again Obama’s support for the recent Supreme Court decision to afford enemy combatants at Guantanamo Bay the right of Habeas Corpus.

“I’m more concerned about his vacillating and going back and forth and being inconsistent on matters of national security and foreign policy,” Thompson said, adding that this is “typical of a liberal, young politician who is extremely ambitious.”

The thrust of Thompson’s argument on national security was that even in domestic criminal cases, petitions of Habeas Corpus are rarely filed until after a criminal proceeding, meaning that the court had awarded enemy combatants a right Americans a right-of-last-resort even for American citizens.

This showed that “the majority of the court doesn’t take this as a real war,” Thompson said, and “I don’t think Senator Obama looks at this as a real war for which you would apply real war rules – that is Geneva Convention but no more than that if it works to our detriment.”

The DNC pre-butted the Thompson call with some of its research:

Sept. 2007: Thompson: Osama Is Merely A Symbol. Thompson said that Osama bin Laden is “more symbolism than anything else.” [AP, 9/7/07]

Sept. 2007: Thompson Argued bin Laden Should Get ‘Due Process.’ Thompson said that Osama bin Laden “should get due process if he’s caught.”  Thompson also said that catching bin Laden would do little to lessen the threats to the U.S.  “You know, that top-dog in Iraq that we killed a while back, you know, that was a great big deal, too. But how much changed after that?” Thompson posited.  [AP, 9/10/07]

Fred Thompson will be back on vacation next week.  Pee Wee Herman has more political credibility than Fred Thompson at this point
Keep bringing in the guys who couldn't even pass a primary as a surrogate..That bodes well McCain..Bodes real well. Wasn't Thompson supposed to change the face of the GOP when he was hush hush about joining the race?
Thanks John McCain - you guys make it more and more easier for the America people to see why they need to vote for Barack Obama come this election.

You all continue to show your ignorance.   Marvelous we Dems couldn't ask for more.. Ok - maybe we will ask that you guys keep talking because you sound so stupid.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
did he ask for a round of applause at the end of the call?
Yawn....zzzzzzz....Wake me up when McCain flip flop flap ends.

They are furious that their 527 trap did not work.
McCain keeps rolling out the rest of his mummy army. These fossils are pathetic.
Fred Flinstone. Go back to Bedrock and leave us alone.
One loser after another comes out to spout the Bush, I mean McCain, talking points.  Why should anybody listen to Thompson?
So what else is new?  I find it really interesting that Fred Thompson, a criminal defense lawyer by training and practice, plays down a critical constitutional right as if it were a mere afterthought.  The stance he is taking is completely against what he has done his entire professional life as a lawyer, and is yet another example of how desperate John McCain is to act like he is tougher than anyone else, and to have his surrogates take positions (of which they are historically opposed) in a lame attempt to say Obama lacks something.  What they lack is judgment and any modicum of insight into the real problems this Country is facing.
Campaign Diaries has released its latest electoral college ratings, finding 5 changes that all favor Obama and give him his first EV lead against McCain: http://www.campaigndiaries.com/2008/06/second-electoral-ratings-five-changes.html
You mean "loser" Fred Thompson is weighing in? So what? Another GOP ex-candidate that is still trying to sell the same old brand of dog food they had in 1950. No big whoop.
Why is giving anyone habeus corpus an issue?? Any true patriot should be furious that these people are saying we should not grant that right to anyone we capture - US citizen or not. All it does is allow a person to question why they are imprisoned. It does not set them free or give them a loop hole in which to avoid prosecution. It merely allows a person not to be held indefinitely witout due cause. The idea that Osama should not have habeus corpus granted to him is insane. Why shouldn't he face our court system if he's captured? Their are tons of evidence that would put the man away for life or give him the death penalty. The niavity comes form thjose that think he shouldn't have habeus corpus, not those that believe in the principle that has with stood over 200 years as a cornerstone of our constitution. We shoule be proud of the fact that we give everyone the writ of habeus corpus. Good God, people. That is what makes this country great.
Thompson strikes me as an actor trying to method act a polition. (yes, I know he is an actor)  I mean, this line...

“I’m more concerned about his vacillating and going back and forth and being inconsistent on matters of national security and foreign policy,”

Fred, you need to look up the word redundant.
Even Hermann Goering got a trial.  He killed millions. The only way the detainees at Gitmo can force a trial is through habeas corpus.  It's fine and dandy for Thompson say that even in domestic criminal cases, petitions of Habeas Corpus are rarely filed until after a criminal proceeding, meaning that the court had awarded enemy combatants a right Americans a right-of-last-resort even for American citizens. That is only true under the assumption that the detainee has been given access to the courts in the first place.  When a detainee is held what could be forever with no way to challenge, habeas corpus is the only vehicle.  We must not give away our democratic principles, even in the fight against terrorism.  What kind of nation would we be then?
Is it just me, or are the blanket attacks of Senator Obama beginning to sound a bit predictable? It is as if they have one statement for every situation: "Senator Obama's (statement about whatever) proves he is just another slimy politician, just like the rest of us."

Senator McCain - please, please, please come up with some original ideas. This constant rehashing of all the same issues from the Democratic priamry is boring, and in case you didn't notice, ineffective. Give me a reason to listen to you. Please.
Fred Thompson, yet another True American Hero. Not like the liberals in this country that want to get rid of every thing we conservatives have worked for for the last hundred years. We need dozens more of Fred Dalton Thompson's and many, many less of Barack Hussein Obama's to continue to keep this country great.
There are so many inconsistencies with the McCain camp. Why are they bringing out these flip floppers to defend their flip flopper. Haven't the Republicans heard of YouTube? Everyone can see the about face these guys are doing. The MSM needs to stop the McCain love and start printing the angry, violent, and unbalanced McCain stories. People need to look at his nonverbal cues that he gives to his wife. He holds her in very low regard, this is a very dangerous man and no one in the MSM appears to want to report anything but phone conferences and publicity stunts. GET OUT THERE AND DIG!
Drill Here! Drill Now! Watch the Prices Decline! The Republicans have it right on this one Democrats.
I love the age of computers!  These politicians just get caught right and left with flip-flops all the time!
Fred, you have no substance.  Go home!

Obama 08
Yes, Fred, The Great Writ is generally used after the fact in most domestic cases. However, that's because law enforcement in this country isn't stupid enough to hold someone without charge or trial for years on end. If that were the norm, you would see more habeas corpus petitions before trial. You cannot compare apples and potatoes.
Forget about putting bread on your table, Bin Laden could be under it.  The GOP mantra "BE AFRAID AMERICA" isn't going to wash with thinking voters.  The War Gnome and minions like Thompson and Lieberman offer nothing but more Bush.
What's wrong with saying getting bin Laden is symbolic? It is symbolic. Limb-wristed liberals should get that, they couldn't care less about Obamas politics, it's the symbolism of him being there that is important. Should we get Obama? Sure, why not? But if liberals are sadly mistaken, yet again, if they think that ends the war on terror.
Why does McCain keep rolling out these bums.. Bums that are in line with Bush.. I am like one of the other bloggers.. is this guy trying to give the election away..and just said here ya go Barack..
Fred Thompson?  Really?  Is the McCain campaign going to send out Howdy Doody next?
FL - McCain keeps rolling out the rest of his mummy army.

Did you see that group of Security Advisors Obama rolled out yesterday? They knew a lot about the Ming Dynasty, ....., because they were there when it happened!
Hooray for Barack ... let's use that 84 million for something more substantial than political ads.  We, the grass roots of his campaign, will take care of the election stuff.

Obama '08
It's funny how these politicians for McCain keep coming out to criticize Obama, and then the Obama campaign simply posts comments from the same politician in which they said the same thing.  The McCain camp is not running a smart campaing at all. Hopefully they'll keep it up and Obama will win in a landslide.
Fred needs to go back to TV.

McCain needs to answer to the FEC charges he already faces, and realize his own mis-handling of his primary campaign financing mkes this a "moot" argument for the general.

Obama's campaign is already publically financed, by all of us small donors. Obama has also mandated that the DNC will no longer accept PAC and Lobbyist monies.

Tell McCain to waste our time with these types of attacks when he "catches up" by telling the RNC not to accept PAC and Lobbyist monies. In the mean time, he should spend his time explaining how he will fund the 18 cents/gallon gas tax rollback he is continuing to push. Since he is against taxing the oil companies, he must be for shutting down infrastructure improvements for our highway systems...

McCain had better stop calling all of us small donors "small potatoes", and start trying to solve some problems.

Us small donors will makle sure Barack has enough campaign funding; even if it 'hurts' short term; the American people are now thinking "Long Term",... but NOT for McCain.
Hey Fred, I'll take my chances on a candidate that is “typical of a liberal, young politician who is extremely ambitious” (remember JFK) any day over a typical, conservative old politician who is extremely ambitious.
The Obama people are controlling the conversation. McCain needs to make some news of his own
More old men yelling at clouds!!
Obama has more experience then fred thompson which is sad considering fred is older then obama so fred really doesn't have any credibility

Sexist Radio Host and Low Class Wife attacks Michelle Obama
Candidates on equal pay.
Obama hits McBush on foreign policy

http://sensico.wordpress.com/
Fred Thompson, give me a break!  Mr. can you give me my lines please?  He was a joke during the primary why would anyone listen to him?  The McCain camp is begining to look pathetic.
The ruling by the supreme court is wrong. I now suppose that anyone captured in furture military actions will be afforded access to our federal courts. Never before in history of the United States  has this happened.  The constitution states, in powers of congress, "to declare war, grant letters of Marque and reprisal and make rules concerning captures on land and water." That is exactly what congress did with the military commissions.
Why does McCain keep rolling out these bums.

I don't know Todd C., Obama sure rolls out his set of bums too. Maddy Albright? Al Gore? Johnny Kerry? Johnny Edwards?  Warren Christopher?? My gosh, Warren Christopher??? Those are all the names from the Who's who of bums.
So in the 80's Reagan let all of the crazy people out and in the 00's Bush started closing nursing homes and turning those people into politicians.  They'll follow anything he says as long as they get a nap and stewed prunes at the end of the day.
Hilarious that McCain rolls out Frankenberry Thompson. This lazy fool is a loser, nothing more. Keep'em coming Grampy
WOW!!  The political powerhouse is back????

His opinion means as much as his campaign did - zilch!!  History won't even show him as an "Also Ran".
Refresh my memory...what exactly are your national security and foreign policy credentials there Fred? A slacker term in the senate where you were known as a lazy senator or on the set of some 'B' movie?

This is worse than the rudy911 show or the hucksterbee show
My general rule of thumb is that you can gage the correctness of any political action by determining how much it upsets conservatives.  The more they are upset, the more correct the action.  Obama's decision re:public financing was clearly the correct thing to do.

Democrats are finally playing to win again.  I almost feel sorry for McCain. :)
kenn: '...How about the folks back home in the projects and slums they could use some of those millons OBAMMA is raising no wait till you can send them my money that works out better for OBAMMA...'

Better yet, Kenn
Why not send the money we're SQUANDERING ON IRAQ back to the 'bitter' white people, like you ?
We'd have enough to spare for the projects and slums, too

(maybe even your slum, Kenn)

John McCain, Endless War

John McCain: Bomb, bomb, bomb ... Bomb, Bomb Iran

Take a nap John, it’s been a long morning

The McCain camp is making things way too easy. Bring in a failure of a politician, Let him spout off and contradict himself then just search for a couple recent quotes where he says the exact opposite of what he is saying today. Is this McCain's plan to win the election? This is going to be easier than I thought!
So in the 80's Reagan let all of the crazy people out - fed up in idaho

Careful there fed up - those folks are Barack's base set of voters.
Yesterday it was Rudy and now Fred.  They both need to go back to bed.  Neither of them have an idea of their own.  They were both rejected in the primaries so why do we care what they say now?  Obama is the only adult running!
Is this the guy who couldn't stay awake to campaign and had to ask an audience to applaud?

Wow.  What a great surrogate, McGasPain
This is really funny coming from a guy who didn't get very far in the primaries.  How much money did he raise?  Was it more than 5 million?  If it was, then I would be surprised.

Is this some attempt to show that the Republicans are united behind McCain?  I don't think that it is working very well.
Wow! obama is sooooo "inspirational" when he flip- flops! He's such an "agent of change" isn't he?
Fred Thompson, Guiliani... step up to the plate and both have their rumps handed to them.

Mr. Fred "the vacillator" Thompson and Mr. Rudy "the verb, adjective, 9/11" Guiliani

I just want to know between Guiliani, Thompson and McFluffy, who's Moe?
Katei in NC - War On Terror  War On Drugs  War On Crime    Maybe you should read 1984.  Your party's real good on understanding the need of a villian to stimulate the masses.  You could actually add War On Liberals and War On Limp Writsted Gays to your list...oh and War On Science.  That should get some more votes from idiots.
I am from the great state of Tennessee where Fred Thompson is also from.  I say, "Go back to sleep, Fred."  We will wake you up when the election is over!
