Clinton: Gotta pay off that debt

Posted: Friday, June 20, 2008 9:14 AM by Domenico Montanaro

TPM’s Greg Sargent reported, “On a private conference call [yesterday], Hillary urged her top fundraisers in no uncertain terms to throw their weight behind Barack Obama, and directly asked them in surprisingly candid terms to give or raise money to help her pay off her campaign's debt. At the same time, in a move that took some participants on the call by surprise, she also clarified that she was not asking their help in paying off her personal loans to the campaign. Interestingly, Hillary also suggested that she would soon be making public statements about the media coverage of the campaign, as well as the ways ‘women were discussed,’ saying that she would ‘be doing more on that as we go forward.’”

“‘I am going to do everything I can to ensure victory for Senator Obama,’ Hillary told her fundraisers on the call. ‘I am asking each of you to do the same. I really believe we've got to see a Democrat sworn into the White House this January.’”

That conference call came amid this news: "Clinton's fund-raising has run so dry she'll likely have to eat the entire $11 million loan she gave her campaign, sources said," the New York Daily News says. "Clinton's push to retire her debt -- more than $20 million including her loan -- is going so poorly that getting help paying it down has become a major point of negotiation with Barack Obama, who wants Clinton to help smooth things with angry Clinton die-hards, sources said."

With a net worth of over $100 million, it should be a no brainer that the Clinton's should have no problems paying off the debt.....

All they have to do is let Bill make a few more crooed deals like he has made in the past and that should take care of that problem.....

Of course, after yesterday we all found out that Obama is no different then the Clinton's, so he has learned well from The Clinton's.....
“‘I am going to do everything I can to ensure victory for Senator Obama,’ Hillary told her fundraisers on the call. ‘I am asking each of you to do the same. I really believe we've got to see a Democrat sworn into the White House this January.’”

Amen

It's time to come together for our country.  Bush/Cheney have created a fascist state with corporations running our government.  The Republican Congress has "borrowed and spent" us into an irresponsibly huge deficit, with the paper being held by the Chinese and some oil rich states in the Middle East, and McCain is willing to borrow even more.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain, who graduated at the very bottom of his class -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
The Clintons have spent their entire lives having
other people come in behind them and clean up the
messes they themselves have created.  That goes right
along with their lifelong sense of earned entitlement.

A net worth of over $100 million dollars, and they
can't even pay their own debts!  (More like WON'T
pay!)

FOR ONCE, let The Clintons clean up their own mess!

Do you see Supreme Court ...Say Yes...
Do you see Vice President...Say No....
Do you see Senate Seat......Not Likely
Do you see Governor of New York... Say Maybe
Do you see Mayor of NYC.....Say Sort of....

She'll either take a low paying government job or make more money as a power broker....
or retire with dignity....
Pay it off with the public funding Obama didn't take.  I'm not giving her any money even if Obama ask.  Nobody's helping me pay off my debt that I chose to create myself.
Why doesn't Mark Penn say he'll forego his salary? He really didn't do much to earn it anyhow, did he? Happy to see the amount she wants doesn't include the money she loaned the camapign from her personal finances. All Bill has to do is give a couple more speeches and they'll recoop that loss, too.
I have little compassion for Hillary on this issue.  Political analyists everywhere pointed out how her campaign was lost in April.  She simply didn't get enough delegates nor cash.

And despite the harsh reality thrown in her face, she continued a very expensive campaign.  Her stubborn will pushed a lost cause.

Dodd, Kucinich, Biden, Edwards, Giuliani, Thompson and all the others dealt with losing head on.  They were wise enough to call it quits to deflect such unsurmountable debt.  It makes you wonder how she would govern our country.
I think it will be a big mistake for Obama to pay Clintons' debt. Why should he bail her out with a "get out of debt free" card. Sen. Clinton should be held responsible for her poor campaign management.
Where are all those Clinton supporters? All those people who were so vocal about her staying in the race so long?

Now that the bills have arrived they are pretty quiet.
It's always about the money.

No matter what they say, it's always about the money.
Well of course she's gotta speak out on media bias against women: she needs to make it clear, for her own legacy, that it was sexism and not a horribly mismanaged campaign or her own dirty tactics that cost her the nomination.
I sure hope Hillary's supporters help her pay off her big campaign debt.  Otherwise it serves her right to be so stupid to run up such a large debt and then have to suck it up not getting her own money back.

Go Obama 08/12!
I think it's time for some compassion for Sen Clinton.  While I agree that her debt problem really should be something that her supporters should deal with (and yeah, it is odd that those ardent supporters don't seem eager to help her); Sen Clinton fought hard, with a lot of energy and determination in this campaign.  That alone deserves respect - because as we all have seen - this is not an easy process or an easy job.

Sen Obama cannot give her a check (thank God) to pay off her debt - but really, is there anything wrong with perhaps headlining some fundraisers for her?  It is all about party unity at this point isn't it?

It doesn't serve any purpose to keep up the fight against Sen Clinton (and her supporters).  If we follow Sen Obama's lead - maybe everyone will win in the end.

Obama '08
I think Bobbie from Eau Claire, kenn, Kathy, and jerry/corpus christi texas should put their money where their mouths are and send a sizeable check to Hillary to help the poor woman pay off her debt. Some supporters YOU are when she needs you the most!
I'm a little embarassed by some of these anti-Clinton posts.  As a longtime Obama supporter, I would hope we can let bygones be bygones and do everything we can to ensure unity among ALL Democratic primary voters and get Obama elected in the fall.  Yes, the Clinton campaign made spectacular mistakes but let's move on.
Wow - I see that the bitterness persists among my fellow Democrats.  So, under this analysis, you expect Senator Clinton to campaign her heart out for Senator Obama, but yet you want to throw her into debtors' prison and leave her to deal with the debts of her campaign all by herself?  Sorry - it does not work that way.  If the supporters of Senator Obama despise Senator Clinton so much, perhaps they would prefer to try to win in November without the votes of the 18 million plus voters who voted for Senator Clinton.  Folks, it is time to bury the hatchet and unify as a party.  Show some respect.
There is no amount of money Barack Hussein Obama could give to win over some former Hillary-supporters like me..He'll never get my vote!

McCain'08!
"I will do everything I can to help Obama win, while also reminding women why they should remain so upset about my loss."

McCain isn't the only one giving out Sybil-like split personality messages.
It isn't surprising that Clinton is asking for help with the debt that she built up.  If she had either spent it more wisely or had planned for a longer fight, there would be a whole lot less debt that she is trying to get help paying off.

For those of her supporters that don't like Obama, you should really ask yourself why you don't support Obama?  Is McCain really that close to where Clinton was in terms of policy?  Be clear with the real reason why you don't want to vote for Obama come the fall; if you don't vote for Obama, please vote for someone other than McCain like Nader or Barr.
I disagree with "Debbie,Ewing,NJ" that she should use the public funding that Obama didn't take. However, I would be ok with the DNC helping out with some of it.

In fact, I think if Obama doesn't take the public funding, that it should be drained from the fund and either used for a public service ... or returned to the taxpayers.
Tom K and the rest of you "still not realizing she won't be President in 2009",
regardless of if McCain wins or Obama wins, Senator Clinton cannot be President of the US come January 2009. It can't happen.
So, you now have two choices, well three actually if you consider former Republican Bob Barr.
But really, the President is going to either be McCain or Obama, that's it.  There are no other choices.
So, either you get behind McCain who allowed a person to call Senator Clinton a B.... when asking him a quesion, or you stand up behind Clinton and reject McCain.
Either you stand up behind McCain who supported and wants to continue the war in Iraq or you stand behind Clinton who wants to end the war.
Either you stand behind McCain who said in 2007 that Roe v. Wade should be overturned or you stand behind Clinton who wants to protect this law.
Either you stand behind McCain who's form of tax cuts cost $3.7 trillion and mostly goes to corporations (who are outsourcing your job) and the wealthy, or you stand behind Clinton's position of giving tax cuts to the middle class (which is pretty much everyone on this blog).
Oh yeah, and by the way, Clinton is standing next to Obama.
So, if you want to be delirious, that's fine.  Come the lat few weeks of October 2008 (for early voters) and then first Tuesday of November 2008, get your delirium out of your brain and vote the same way you did whenever the Democratic primary hit your state.  Get behind YOUR CANIDIDATE, Sen Clinton, who's standing next to and up for Sen Obama.

One last thing, can spare her $2 today?  Just two. IF half of the 18 million each gave $2, her debt would be retired.
Tom K

It's odd.  You say that you are a former Sen Clinton supporter - and yet you refuse to support Sen Obama.

Instead, you claim you will vote for Sen McCain - who holds positions that are the opposite of everything that Sen Clinton stands for.  And your persistent use of Sen Obama's middle name; in an obvious attempt to either distort his image or scare people is shameful too.

Either you never really supported Sen Clinton at all -and are simply a Republican troll seeking to stir up trouble or you are unwilling to let the primary season go.

Either way - you just come off sounding silly and angry - with nothing really to add to the conversation.

Obama '08
As much as women stood behind Hillary and applauded her drive to fight to the bitter end, we are total hypocrites when it comes to paying off HER campaign debt. She's wealthy, we're not. I for one think she and Bill should not be begging grassroots donors for money. She should just shut up and eat the loss - it's all part of the business of politics and the past 20+ years have been very generous to them.
So Hillary wants Obama and/or donors to pay up for the infamous 3 AM phone-call ad? NO WAY!

Obama needs all the money he can get PLUS 527s if any to counter the crooked Republican smear machine.

Remember Swiftboat Veterans for Truth that smeared John Kerry? A TEXAS OIL PROFITEER called T. Boone Pickens donated 2 MILLION to swiftboat John Kerry, and get this retard re-elected!

NO WAY DONORS, give all the money to Obama's campaign.
I'm a strong Obama supporter but I do not like it when people bash Sen. Clinton.  If she would have shown the same character, integrity, and principle as Sen. Obama, I would have had a hard time choosing between the two.  Now, I sincerely hope that she will be a strong supporter of Sen. Obama, but I don't agree that she should be the V.P.  They are two different people. She should go public and say she's supporting Sen. Obama with no strings attached.  As for her debt, I think it's only fair that her 18 million supporters give $2.00 each.  I'd even give that to her.  Now let's UNITE!!Otherwise we'll be just as bad as the Republicans.
TomK, you are not a real Democrat...You would rather vote for someone who represents the opposite of what you "supposedly" stand for, than vote for the party you are a member of....Its Dems like you that keep us divided! Thankfully, there are not many HC supporters with your attitude, and thus just know that you are wasting your vote...And if McCain does win, you will have voted for "the enemy" so to speak, as McCain is not the Maverick we met in 2000.....I agree with other Dems about burying the hatchet and moving on.....Republicans will vote for McCain even if they hate him JUST so a Dem won't win....and thats why we have had Mr. Bush all these years....its twisted how a party like that can stay on top all these years....oh yeah....people like YOU TomK....Thanks a lot!

Being a black female Floridian and HC supporter, I felt that she had some cahones to say that she didn't need to count our votes per these rules....Had she agreed otherwise our votes for her would have counted....but in all fairness our girl needs to take her medicine like a big girl, and do what she needs to do...thats what happens when you let go of feminine wisdom to try and roll with the big boys....:) I feel for her, but you have to accept when something blows in your face....Obama has my vote, as I am a TRUEDEM....
