MoveOn shuts down 527

Posted: Friday, June 20, 2008 1:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
In another example of the Obama campaign wanting to show more control over Democratic independent groups -- and maybe more importantly, those groups listening -- MoveOn.org has shuttered its 527. (See release and e-mail to supporters after the jump.)

Obama camp will likely try to take the high road on the issue of 527s, particularly if 527s ramp up efforts for McCain. Thus far, Obama has benefitted more than McCain from independent groups like MoveOn.

*** UPDATE *** A Democratic source tells First Read that this has less to do with anything Obama has said and more to do with MoveOn wanting to flex its muscle at Republicans. MoveOn hasn't used its 527 since 2004, and has instead used its PAC to raise money. MoveOn will still be as active as ever, but this move is almost a dare to Republicans. If they don't use 527s, the source said, they have nothing that can match MoveOn.

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 20, 2008
MoveOn Shuts Down Dormant 527; Will Continue All Small-Donor Driven Election Work; Group Plans To Spend $35 Millon This Cycle From Small Donor PAC

MoveOn.org will run all of its 2008 electoral activity out of its small donor-driven federal political action committee, MoveOn.org Political Action, and will permanently shut down its Voter Fund, a 527 that it operated in the 2004 election but has not used since that time. MoveOn.org Political Action has 3.2 million members who make average contributions of under $50. MoveOn Political Action plans to spend $35 million this election cycle.

"The small-donor driven politics that built MoveOn and the progressive movement has helped to drive Barack Obama's candidacy," said Eli Pariser, executive director of MoveOn.org. "We've always believed this new kind of politics can change our country and end the gridlock in DC. And now is the time to let the voices of ordinary Americans be heard in this election."
Since 1998, when the group started, it has raised $122 million only 10% came in donations of over $5000.

MoveOn has committed its resources to grassroots and issue-based activities this election cycle, starting with the 700 bake sales members will hold around the country this weekend to raise funds to help fund efforts to elect Barack Obama.

Go all in on new politics?

Dear MoveOn Member,
For almost ten years, we've worked together to change American politics. Millions of us have collaborated to build a new progressive moment, catalyzed by the Internet and motivated by our belief that the country we love deserves better.

Now, in Barack Obama, we have a Presidential candidate who has based his campaign on precisely that kind of new politics-a people-driven politics focused on the outside-of-the-beltway consensus around Iraq, climate change, and health care, not the gridlock in Washington.

Using a lot of the tools and techniques developed by the progressive movement-as well as a visionary approach to leadership-Obama's brought millions of new people into the process. And, following in the footsteps of Howard Dean, ActBlue, and other innovators, he's adopted a new way of funding a campaign-relying on a donor base of millions rather than contributions by lobbyists and special interests.

It's a very exciting moment. And so the time has come to answer an important question: should we make an all-in commitment, together, to this new politics?

While MoveOn Political Action has always been funded exclusively by small donors like you, we've held open the MoveOn.org Voter Fund-a separate "527" organization-which can raise money from big donors. We haven't actually taken any big-money checks since 2004, when MoveOn members matched big contributors to educate voters about George Bush's policies. But in light of the new politics offered by Barack Obama, I've come to believe it's time to close the 527 forever-and to challenge organizations on the right to do the same thing.
That means that we won't raise any money for our election work from foundations, unions, or even individuals who want to give over $5,000. It's an all-in commitment to the small-donor way of doing things. But the time is right to take the leap.

Not relying on big donors means that all of us, together, have to take responsibility. So before we sign the final paperwork, we need to know that you're in. Are you? Just click below to take the pledge and let us know:

And if you have any other thoughts or feedback for me on this decision, you can reply to epariser@moveon.org (I can't promise that I'll respond to all the emails, but I'll definitely read 'em).

We've come a long way together in our journey toward a new people-driven politics for America. It's been a wonderful honor to be part of it. And this is just the beginning.

Thanks,
-Eli and the whole team

2008 - The Summer of Unity.

I can hear the engines warming up. The Obama campaign is about to take off.

That says what a dedicated public servant can and will do. America is hungry for that.
Good idea.

McSybil, its your move.
HE IS ALREADY CHANGING THE WORLD!

GO BARRACK!

CLASS ACT, MOVE-ON.ORG
Unlike other politicians, Obama is a man of action, not empty promises!!

He shows what strength he really has.  This guy is a once-in-a-lifetime leader.
Looks like Soros can buy that new 767 after all.
Say what you want about Omaba backing out of public financing: you can't deny that he IS reforming the way the campaigns can be financed ..and his way is more democratic than what we have seen in the past.

Go Obama!
You see, McCain?
That's how it's done.

Obama '08
Well sure Obama benefits from Move ON.....Sorros owns Obama.
Move ON . org - the far left liberal, radical group just loves Obama.
Wow.  That's a good move.

Since the Republican use of 527s was used as a reasoning for Obama opting out of public financing, this step brings some added credibility to the left on that issue.

It also will give the Obama campaign greater control over the uniformity of the message.  We've already seen the Republicans have to reign in inflammatory ads in certain markets -- Obama (theoretically) won't have to do that.

Welcome to politics from Chicago.  This Obama/Axelrod/Plouffe are not dumb.

http://ilfamilypolitics.blogspot.com
Cool, if the Republicans don't take up the offer, they look petty and if they do take up the offer, they lose the election.

Either way, it's a win-win for the 'people' and not the corporations that currently run this country.

Yes ... we ... can.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain, who graduated at the very bottom of his class -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
Well, we all know how this is going to go.  The republicans will hit and hit hard and then deny of course. At least, this way, when MoveOn does come back with an ad, they can say we tried to play nice, but you didn't abide by the truce.  I say keep the 527's ready and aimed.  I'm sure will need them before November.  I expect and demand that Moveon not let any attacks on Senator Obama or his family go unanswered.  It is critical to the health of our Nation that the Democrats win this election.
Hopefully this is the start of a new political direction.  Politicians claim to hate these hateful 527s, but surprise, surprise, can't or won't do a thing to stop them. They love to hide behind the lie that these aren't by their campaigns, but rogue agents.

I was very disappointed with McCain a few months ago when a republican group sponsored a hateful 527 during one the primaries.  He said kind of said he was against it, but did nothing to stop it from running.  After what he went through with Bush/Rove in 2000, I thought he'd show more conviction and character. Stupid me.
FR doesn't seem to be posting comments today, but I'll try anyway.

In this article, we see again how Obama is transforming the world of politics, step by step. I doubt we'll see any Republican political groups vowing to rely only on small donors.  We'll see.
Barack Obama getting MoveOn.org to shutter it's 527 ads shows that Barack has the leadership skills our country needs now.  We'll never see "Bush Hugger" McCain show this kind of leadership in controlling the RNC swiftboat gang of 527's.  While Obama takes the high road "Mudslinger" McCain will still be taking the low road of gutter politics.

Barack Obama promised to bring a new style of leadership to Washington and we've seen ample evidence early that he will follow through on his promise.  His opting out of public financing is the clearest example of how he'll change the old style Washington politics of wasting taxpayer money on political campaigns.

Go Obama 08/12!
so they do work for OBAMMA and the democratic party taking marching orders from them Hows GENERAL BETRAYUSb seems to be doing a better job than you thought he was so now its economics not american lives
Hmmmm....me thinks that Obama blundered a bit.  He should keep the option of allowing Democrat friendly 527s in the event we see a proliferation of the sleezy, dirty, nasty, disgusting, hypocracy laden rethuglican 527s.
MoveOn stops it's 527.
The DNC stops accepting money from PACs and lobbyists.

Obama is LEADING his party. Meanwhile, McCain acts like he has no control over anything that happens within his party.
I am a new member of moveon.org. I also will be participating in the bake sale this seekend. I am excited that they are backing Obama. i fell in love with them in 2004 when they campaigned so hard against G-dub.
I am glad that they too are taking the high road in this election it just oges to show what influence Obama has over the party!!!
Command and control.. Who is the real leader of their party.. Organizing genius..

Looks like that low level community organizer roots play quit well on the big stage..

For those that say McCain is so much more experienced and knowledgeable, why is it that he is being outhustled and just flat out worked by this junior senator at a pace that is nauseating?
Good thinkin' obama. When the 527's start running Rev Wright.. over and over and over.... you'll have a legit bit**.
This brings a tear to my eye?  Is this really happening?  Are Americans finally getting their voice heard over the corporate clanging machinery?

It's a beautiful day, and it truly is proof of change starting to happen.
This is a big, positive move.

Nothing about Obama is politics as usual. A stark contrast to McCain.
John McCain going to cry because Barack promised to stop democratic 527s... and did?
This is an excellent development. I know the Republicans won't follow suit and that is another reason why Independents like myself are tacking towards Obama this year. The 527s need to be reigned in and I'd love to see both campaigns do just that. Maybe if the 527s are shunned as inappropriate by the campaigns then the Congress will grown a pair and eliminate the loophole completely.
Obama is the man!

We The People, Politicians, and high powered organizations like MOVE.ON, trust him, and marvel at what he, and his campaign have accomplished.

People, we have found our leader.

May G-D continue to bless us all. Amen.
OMG! Times they are a changing!

It is a NEW DAY!
Obama just shut down the 527 of a organization that has over 3 million members.  How can McCain be President if he can't control four or five individuals working for his 527 groups?
Move On was one of the most insidius abusers of the Section 527 loophole.  Georg Soros will just use other less visable ways to control elections.
Change is coming....
It's about time.  I would like to see them all go away - on the left and the right.
Good. I'm a Dem. Appreciate the notices from Move On. I am not always in agreement with their positions. With the national media giving less independent reporting and more opinions Move-On is one more source for finding some truth amid all the opinions. i suggest that all citizens use some other sources as well. Try the BBC world news as one independant source. They report much better than the networks or cable.
I am 60 years old and this is the first time in my adult life that I have been realy proud enough of my country to donate money to a campainge. It was a pleasure reading your message and I hope everyone of your members agr with you.

As this movement contunes to move-on, I want to be apart of it. I will be makeing additional donations as we work to remove lobbyists and special interests groups from the system. Great to hear you make this comment!
McCain and his GOP sycophants will continue to deride Obama over campaign financing, but the differences between the campaigns are stark:

- Obama has refused money from federal lobbyists; McCain's campaign can't turn down any money, even from the likes of Clayton Williams

- Obama has created a truly people-powered campaign finance system, record-breaking in both the number of donors and the relatively small average donation; McCain has merged his financing with that of the RNC due to his inability to attract financing

- McCain has gamed the system, including using his ability to receive public funds as guarantee for a loan earleir in the primary; Obama has been publicly-financed through grass-roots contributions from the beginning

- Obama has the influence to lead independent groups like MoveOn away from the politics of the past; McCain can't influence even GOP organizations away from running attacks theat his own campaign has disavowed

I don't expect the usual crop of GOP apologists to be willing to face this, but fair-minded independents and individuals will see this for what it is: a sea change in the way campaigns are financed and conducted.
It is the idea that we all do a little bit, we can change the world.  The most important thing is that we start somewhere.  If Moveon.org is going to be an example, then it must start.  I doubt that many Republican groups will do the same thing.
Good for MOVE On ... if you want to congratulate them you can sent a comment under the contact section on the website. You don't have to be giving them $$ if the Obama campaign is already getting it. I don't think people have to give very much to feel like they are investing in a brighter day for our nation.
Holy cow.  Bravo Obama.
I am seriously impressed.
Here we go. Nice move. Small donors run Obamas campaign.
A standing ovation for Obama, and kudos to Move On.

That, "my friends" <smirk>, is what true leadership looks like! (Do you think McCain and his 527 cronies will follow suit? <crickets>...Yeah...I didn't think so either!)

These Rethuglicans have no idea who they are up against, thinking their same old tricks will work...but, it would seem, Obama is the one who got ALL the game! =D

Fist bumps all around!
Past experience has been that these 527s put little into production values or market share, relying on the free media to pick up on some crappy ad running on a station in South Bumpstump to gain national exposure.  Rather than outlawing 527s (leading inevitably to their successors), I'd suggest the MSM impose a rule that works not only to the benefit of the public but to themselves as well:  If these folks aren't buying ad time on your network, don't give them any play in your news hole.  Force them to actually have a national impact before, rather than after, you give them national coverage.  And give their full pedigree if and when you do use their stuff.  Otherwise, let them die on the vine out there in YouTube land somewhere with the thousands of other poor quality videos produced by political wackjobs and self-absorbed teenie boppers.  Obviously, Fox News should be exempted from this rule as "poor quality videos produced by political wackjobs and self-absorbed teenie boppers" pretty much sums up their broadcast day.
