Obama surrogates hit McCain on trade

Posted: Friday, June 20, 2008 1:57 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
On a day when McCain is speaking in Canada, a partner in the North American Free Trade agreement, Obama surrogates held a conference call to bash the Arizona senator on his record on trade, saying he would continue George Bush's "failed trade policies" that have hurt America's industrial heartland.

On the call were Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland and Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm. Ohio and Michigan are key battleground states that Obama is fighting to win in November and they are also states that have faced particular economic hardship, with numerous jobs lost, many of them as companies shipped them overseas.

The call coincided with the end Obama's two-week economic tour during which he delivered policy speeches and held roundtables on an issue that is at the top of voters minds this election year.

Brown talked about the job losses faced in Ohio, some 200,000 lost manufacturing jobs since Bush took office.

"Today, at one o'clock, McCain is in Ottawa, Canada, talking about trade," Brown said. "He should come to Ottawa, Ohio, which is a community in northwest Ohio which just about, around four-and-a-half years ago lost a plant called Philips which makes television tubes and 1,100 people lost their jobs. Those 1,100 jobs were moved to Gomez Palacio, Mexico a direct outgrowth of bad trade policy," NAFTA and all that came after it.

Brown said McCain cared more about free trade than fair trade and would support free trade "at any cost even if it costs us our jobs as it has so many Ohioans. There hasn't been a trade deal that John McCain hasn't liked" and said it was clear McCain would sign more trade agreements with almost any country.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm talked about the need for America to have an export market and not just an import market. She said job losses in Michigan had "been devastating since George Bush became president" putting the number lost at 400,000.

She said McCain should come to Michigan and meet with people who have lost their jobs due to deals like the South Korea Free Trade agreement -- which McCain supports and Obama opposes -- which she said failed to protect workers.

"What's amazing is that Sen. McCain, while acknowledging that these trade agreements have cost American jobs, he still believes that they have been successful. How out of touch can you be?" she asked.

Both Granholm and Strickland said McCain had not supported efforts to help American workers whose jobs were displaced by trade agreements, with Strickland listing instances when the Arizona senator voted against job re-training for displaced workers and against low-interest loans to help those workers.

The call participants were repeatedly asked about an interview Obama gave to Fortune Magazine in which he toned down his anti-NAFTA rhetoric and suggested he did not want to unilaterally reopen negotiations with our neighbors on the deal.

"The ‘What if’ question, 'If negotiations fall apart will the U.S. pull out.' That's just not gonna happen," Brown said. Barack is going to in good faith sit down with our two very close geographic and political allies, Mexico and Canada, sit down with them and reach an agreement on NAFTA that will improve the situation in our country principally but also in their countries so that trade works and trade can work for all countries if we do it right with the right rules and it's just to me it's just beyond the realm of any real possibility that people are gonna stop going to the table and one of the countries is going to withdraw from NAFTA."

Brown said withdrawal was a possibility but an unlikely one and that Obama would represent the country in a way that the agreement would be significantly improved.

The surrogates said trade deals with labor and environmental standards would help both American workers and foreign workers, using Mexico as an example of a place where such rules would raise living standards for Mexicans and expand the market for U.S. goods.

NAFTA, great for corporations,

~ not so great for the workers who have seen their good paying jobs shipped out of the country.

~ not so great for the environment.

~ not so great for the consumer, sure prices went down, but so did quality.

It's time to come together for our country.  Bush/Cheney have created a fascist state with corporations running our government.  The Republican Congress has "borrowed and spent" us into an irresponsibly huge deficit, with the paper being held by the Chinese and some oil rich states in the Middle East, and McCain is willing to borrow even more.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain, who graduated at the very bottom of his class -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.
MSNBZZZZ takes up OBAMMAs call and posts are flying against MACAIN how about why did OBAMMA sit in a church for 20 years and take a week to QUIT?
And what's Obama's plan to bring those 200000 jobs back to Ohio? Just as I thought, there is none. But it sure is fun to blame someone else for the problem.
McCain is really one dumb republican
Remember the Rethuglicans took an oath to preserve, protect and defend Big Corporations!  So help them Exxon!

The will destroy America as long as Big Oil and other Big Corps. maintain the profits.
200K job loss is alot.  however, those jobs were replaced with computer jobs requring soft skills..

Real Americans will never forget it was the repugnant ones who pushed all those good paying manufacturing jobs to China and India and tried to replace them with crappy low paying retail jobs with no benefits.  The repugnant ones thought they could break the back of organized labor thus breaking the back of the major power base of Democrats.  Well they were wrong and now Barack Obama is overcoming this nefarious scheme of the repugnant ones.

We can never forget nor forgive the repugnant ones for screwing up our economy.  Everything they've done has backfired and we the people are caught holding the bag for their self serving misdeeds.  Time to send the Wall Street crowd a message from Main Street that we're mad as hell and we're going to take back our government from the money addicts and make the rich and greedy pay their fair share of taxes again!

Go Obama 08/12!
I am suprised that McCain continues to support G Bush. I have never seen our country in such bad shape. I love for him to keep it up so that we can get Obama in the White House. Our country is in such a mess that at this point it will even be hard for Obama, but at least he will try to change our country into the right direction.YES WE CAN
So seeing Obama won't provide us a trade plan, lets speculate on what he might do if he manages to fool enough people to vote for him this fall. Lets see, he could raise tariffs on imports thus making them much more expensive to Americans and make domestic products cheaper. At the same time, the tariffs will be a nice revenue stream to the government because they are kind of like a tax. Then Americans will buy more American products because they will be cheaper. And that should bring back jobs to the US, right? Wow, a win-win-win.

Well, maybe not, because other countries will then put tariffs on our exports going to them. Ohhh, that's not good because now our products cost other countries more to purchase. So what we'll end up with is expensive products here in the US, domestic layoffs because foreign countries no longer buy our expensive products, and world wide inflation. That sounds like a lose-lose-lose.

And that's what Obama is, a loser.
I like that the dems are disputing facts and the republican stance.. not trying to just say oh obama is just too inexperienced.. he's going to raise your taxes..  Okay repubs what are you going to do then.. I read a statement that said it perfectly.. Republicans are ALL talk and NO action.. See Obama is taking action right now meeting with his dem counterparts regarding the ISSUES..so that when he takes the oath in January 2009 he is well informed and READY to put his SOLUTIONS in motion.. We could definitely start by improving our SHABBY INFRASTRUCTURE (roads, bridges, LEEVES), that we haven't invested in for decades..
In business, when you make a bad decision you either correct it or cut your losses and get out.  Why then is it bad policy to selectively renegotiate a bad economic policy decision making it more favorable for American workers.  In this economy I would expect that a good President be a realist and attempt to renegotiate the inequities inherent in the NAFTA trade agrrement.

Its about time the Republicans were held accountable for their policies and positions. 200,000 manufacturing jobs lost since Bush took office? How do you spin that?
McCain's speaking in Canada is typical of his Duel Personality. How Canada or anyone listen to a person who is a walking contradictions.  The USA’s Arizona senator has a 95% siding with G.W.  McCain.  McCain is G. W. Bush3.0 as well as a major flip flopper.
We need FAIR trade policy, not agreements that are skewed towards our competitors or allow them to undercut us or ruin the economy for a profit. Set 'em straight Obama.

Hey MSNBC, how come I get the red line when I use the name OBAMA. Does not your spell-checker not know that the next president of the United States' name should not be flagged as an error?
Amazingly, I get the same thing for MSNBC. How quaint.
Don't worry...according to mcsame those jobs won't be coming back and if not for the bush/mccain economic and trade policies these past few years it would be a lot worse...how's that argument working for you ohioans?
Slick Willie passed NAFTA. W Bush ran with it and is responsible for millions of Americans out of work and scrambling to pay their bills. NAFTA has not only hurt the big factories, but it has hurt many skilled trades- People who went to college to find a better job. Not to mention all the jobs that were subcontractors for the big factories. Crime is up, Unemployment is up and there is no end in sight.

This Democrat hopes the Republican rule on America is going to end in November. For all readers of this blog who want proof of what was said: listen to the horror stories from those from MI and Ohio.

Obama/s comments this week about bringing back american auto jobs is pure BS. He try's to idntify all american workers with the auto workers loss of jobs and tries to pin it on NAFTA. Here's the big lie, that the UAW cares about american workers. The UAW only cares about unionized american workers particularly those that are UAW members. NAFTA, that was enacted under Bill Clinton not "W" has been a benefit for the great majority of americans. Has it been beneficial for the UAW ? No. As a matter of fact it has done a lot to kill this dinosaur. Obama dances to the UAW tune( and other unions) because unions are his biggest contributors and without who's support Obama or any other Democrat could get elected....ever. Unions represent 12.7 % of all american workers. In the private sector it is only 7.5%. Unions are not main stream america. Viewed realistically they are the enemies of the american consumer and taxpayers because all they add is cost. Prime example is the best cars made in america are made by non-union workers. Obama is willing to trash american credibility and the economic security of 87.5 % of american workers for the support of the unionized 12.7% of workers. Some change?
i was just looking at all your headlines.  all of them but this one is critical of obama.  when will you start running equal reports about both candidates shortcomings and stop perpetuating the myth that mccain is a maverick.   it would be nice to come here once and get both sides of the story.
If the Agreements made sure that a company that moved their production to Mexico that they would have to pay the workers there the exact same wages, for the positions, that they paid in the US, and also had to comply with US environmental Regulations as well as having to pay taxes on all money made in the US, AND paid the local Country's taxes. The same should go for trade with China too!!  If American Companies were able to sell their products, unhindered, to foreign nations as well then I think that that would be a VERY FAIR set of Trade regulations.  But I can guarantee you that this would be the farthest from the minds of the Republicans and people with Big Money worldwide as you could get.
Republicons have always said one thing and done another.  Nothing new here.  Did anyone actually expect John McCain to behave any differently?
They just can't get away with it any longer where so many people have access to the internet and are able to access the truth.
Ms. Granholm needs to get a grip.  Michigan was bleeding jobs under Gov. Engler, and until the Big Three start making advanced engineering of efficient vehicles a priority, automotive jobs are going nowhere but out the door.  If you want Canadians (or Americans, for that matter) to buy your product, then make a product worth buying, because SUVs aren't cutting it anymore.

**Check out the New Honda fuel cell vehicle, Ms. Granholm?**

Perhaps, if we fixed immigration so that more highly trained people could legally enter the country, then our automakers might be able to actually put out a product that reflected an original idea.

I'm sorry I sound cranky -- I've just heard this stuff for too long.  In the case of Michigan, it just doesn't fly anymore.
i agree with the obama camp. and why is mccain pandering to the canadians we are already allies to the canadians

http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/06/20/dwc-checklist-4-change-part-2/
I have to say that with a FAIR trade policy we could keep some jobs here in America.  It would also help if places like Wal-mart didn't demand that companies sell at the stores at a dictated price.  I am willing to believe that caused a number of companies to move their manufacturing plants overseas so that they could maintain a profit.
With Mccain trying to distance himself from Bush policies, fortunately they don't have much in common. The only issues they agree on are:

Education
Immigration
Iraq
Abortion
Supreme Court Judges
Social Security
Tax breaks for the wealthy
Wiretapping
Trade
Healthcare
The Middle-East
Same-sex marriage
Medicare
Off-shore drilling

Gosh, I'm glad that he won't have trouble differentiating himself from Bush. Otherwise, he wouldn't have a snowball's chance at the Oval Office.
Amy B.:
1. NAFTA was a Clinton policy not Bush.
2. You can blame Bush for a lot of things but job losses in the auto industry etc. is not his creation.
