McCain camp strikes at Obama's honesty

Posted: Friday, June 20, 2008 2:11 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
It wasn't just the Obama campaign on the attack today. The McCain campaign got in a few shots of its own.

"Because of his rapid ascent and the relative lack of record from which the American people can judge, the words that Barack Obama uses deserve a level of scrutiny befitting the importance that he places on them," writes McCain message maestro Steve Schmidt in a memo to reporters (see full memo after the jump.) "But when examined closely, more often than not these words are empty of any meaning in the light of his record and reality."

VIDEO: Flip-flopping on a prior pledge, Barack Obama says he's not going to take public funding for his White House bid. His opponent, John McCain blasts the decision. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

The memo goes on to hit Obama on public financing, "running a different type Of campaign," trade, taxes, the 2005 energy bill, Iraq and Jerusalem.

Some key shots: On public financing: "This change in position comes after nearly two years of speaking to and signing his name to his commitment to the public financing system. ... Yet, in the end, Barack Obama's words were empty and he decided to break his pledge to accept public financing in the general election.

On running a different type of campaign: "The McCain campaign has made a good faith effort to reach out to Barack Obama offering to go Iraq together and hold 10 joint town hall meetings. These offers came after Barack Obama pledged to meet "anywhere, anytime" However, Barack Obama has rejected each and every offer to raise the dialogue in this campaign. As the St. Petersburg Times wrote today, Barack Obama's words come down to "cynical political calculations," not the new politics he promised.

On Jerusalem: "Obama clearly said that Jerusalem should be the "undivided" capital of Israel. Barack Obama and his advisers knew what this word would mean to his audience. ... Yet, only a day later, Barack Obama said the future of Jerusalem would have to be negotiated by Israel and the Palestinians. Barack Obama was no longer prepared to say that Jerusalem should be undivided."

And there's plenty more where that came from.

Re:       Words Matter

Barack Obama's rapid ascent to the Democratic presidential nomination is nothing short of remarkable and historic. Much of this rise can be traced to the power of Barack Obama's spoken and written words. As Barack Obama said during the primaries, "Don't tell me words don't matter."

Because of his rapid ascent and the relative lack of record from which the American people can judge, the words that Barack Obama uses deserve a level of scrutiny befitting the importance that he places on them. But when examined closely, more often than not these words are empty of any meaning in the light of his record and reality.

As we scrutinize Barack Obama's words, it is increasingly difficult for those of us with the responsibility of following this year's election closely to discern what Obama truly believes at his core on the issues of great importance to the American people.

Obama's Words On Public Financing: Just yesterday, Barack Obama reversed his position on accepting general election public financing. This change in position comes after nearly two years of speaking to and signing his name to his commitment to the public financing system.

In June 2006, Barack Obama said quite clearly, "I strongly support public financing":

OBAMA: "Well, I strongly support public financing. And I know [Senator] Dick [Durbin] does too. He's going to have some things to say about it because when we were having – as you'll recall – the major debates around lobbying reform, one of the things that Dick, I think, properly pointed out was that you can change the rules on lobbying here in Washington, but if we're still getting financed primarily from individual contributions, that those with the most money are still going to have the most influence." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At Constituents Breakfast, 6/29/06)

In November 2007, Barack Obama signed his name to his commitment to accept public financing as his party's general election nominee:

QUESTION: "If you are nominated for President in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?" OBAMA: "Yes. I have been a long-time advocate for public financing of campaigns combined with free television and radio time as a way to reduce the influence of moneyed special interests." (Sen. Barack Obama, "Presidential Candidate Questionnaire," Midwest Democracy Network, www.commoncause.org, 11/27/07)

In February 2008, Barack Obama said that he would meet and "sit down with John McCain" to discuss and negotiate public financing were he to be his party's nominee:

NBC'S TIM RUSSERT: "So you may opt out of public financing. You may break your word." Obama: "What I – what I have said is, at the point where I'm the nominee, at the point where it's appropriate, I will sit down with John McCain and make sure that we have a system that works for everybody." (Democratic Presidential Debate, Cleveland, OH, 2/26/08)

Yet, in the end, Barack Obama's words were empty and he decided to break his pledge to accept public financing in the general election.

Obama's Words On Running A Different Type Of Campaign: The McCain campaign has made a good faith effort to reach out to Barack Obama offering to go Iraq together and hold 10 joint town hall meetings. These offers came after Barack Obama pledged to meet "anywhere, anytime":

OBAMA: "I am happy to have a debate with John McCain and George Bush about foreign policy. If John McCain wants to meet me anywhere, anytime, to have a debate about our respective policies in Iraq, Iran, the Middle East or around the world, that is a conversation I am happy to have. Because I believe that there is no separation between John McCain and George Bush when it comes to our Middle East policy and I think their policy has failed." (Barack Obama, Media Availability, Watertown, SD, 5/16/08)

However, Barack Obama has rejected each and every offer to raise the dialogue in this campaign. As the St. Petersburg Times wrote today, Barack Obama's words come down to "cynical political calculations," not the new politics he promised:

"Avoiding town hall meetings and rejecting public campaign financing may be predictable strategies for minimizing one of McCain's greatest strengths and exploiting one of his key weaknesses. But they pull Obama down into the cynical political calculations he pledged to rise above." (Editorial, "Obama's Big Words Ring Hollow," St. Petersburg Times, 6/20/08)

Obama's Words On The 2005 Energy Bill: As part of his standard stump speech, Barack Obama criticizes the Bush-Cheney energy policy. However, not spoken is the fact that he voted for the Bush-Cheney energy policy in 2005.

On the campaign trail, Barack Obama has criticized the Bush-Cheney energy bill:

OBAMA: "When Bush assigned Cheney to create energy policy, he met with the environmental groups once, the renewable energy groups once, he met with the oil and gas companies 40 times. Washington has become so dominated by the powerful, by the well-connected, that the voices of the American people are no longer heard." (Barack Obama, Remarks, Detroit, MI, 6/16/08)

This is good rhetoric but it does not match the record. The energy policy that he assails for being a Bush-Cheney creation for the benefit of the oil companies is the very same energy policy he voted for in the 2005 Energy Bill. Again, Barack Obama's words on energy are empty and actually contrary to his own public record.

Obama's Words On Trade: Barack Obama claims that he believes in free trade. However, a headline in the Detroit Free Press captures the internal conflict of Barack Obama's words – "Obama Tries to Have it Both Ways on Free Trade Issue." Barack Obama says, "I believe in free trade" but "then he reverted to the anti-trade rhetoric of the primaries." We all recall Obama adviser Austin Goolsbee dismissing his candidate's own rhetoric as primary politics.  In light of this, Barack Obama's words on the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) deserve even greater scrutiny.

During the primaries, Barack Obama pledged to unilaterally renegotiate NAFTA:

NBC'S TIM RUSSERT: "A simple question. Will you as president say to Canada and Mexico, this [NAFTA] has not worked for us, we are out?" OBAMA: "I will make sure that we renegotiate in the same way that Senator Clinton talked about, and I think actually Senator Clinton's answer on this one is right. I think we should use the hammer of a potential opt-out as leverage to ensure that we actually get labor and environmental standards that are enforced." (Sen. Barack Obama, MSNBC Democrat Presidential Debate, Cleveland, OH, 2/26/08)

However, in the general election, Barack Obama is backing off these words which were pretty clear. Now, Barack Obama says his words are not to be believed if they are "overheated and amplified."

"In an interview with Fortune to be featured in the magazine's upcoming issue, the presumptive Democratic nominee backed off his harshest attacks on the free trade agreement and indicated he didn't want to unilaterally reopen negotiations on NAFTA. 'Sometimes during campaigns the rhetoric gets overheated and amplified,' he conceded, after I reminded him that he had called NAFTA 'devastating' and 'a big mistake,' despite nonpartisan studies concluding that the trade zone has had a mild, positive effect on the U.S. economy." (Nina Easton, "Obama: NAFTA Not So Bad After All," Fortune, 6/18/08)

Obama's Words On His Tax Hikes: Barack Obama has made tax increases a centerpiece of his economic agenda. However, when asked by CNBC's John Harwood if he would be willing to hold off on raising taxes if he thought they might harm the economy, Barack Obama said:

OBAMA: "Some of those, you could possibly defer. But I think the basic principle of restoring fairness to our economy and encouraging bottom-up economic growth is important." (CNBC, 6/9/08)

This is a tacit acknowledgment that his tax increases would hurt the economy and American workers.  Likewise, Barack Obama consistently attacks John McCain for favoring "tax breaks to corporations." Yet, he recently told The Wall Street Journal that he too was considering cutting corporate taxes. Just last month, Barack Obama called corporate tax cuts "the exact wrong prescription for America."  On one day, Barack Obama took two positions on one issue, again leaving observers and voters unsure of what he really believes.

Obama's Words On Iraq: Throughout the primaries, Barack Obama has been determined to withdraw from Iraq regardless of the consequences or the facts on the ground.  This week, Barack Obama talked with the Iraqi Foreign Minister.  According to The Washington Post, the Foreign Minister left the conversation "reassured" and thinking "that Mr. Obama might not differ all that much from Mr. McCain."

The ABC News headline captures this perplexing issue clearly: "Obama and Iraqi Foreign Minister have Different Memories of their Conversation." In our foreign policy, we cannot afford a president whose public words are discounted by allies and enemies alike.

Obama's Words On Jerusalem: For weeks, debate has swirled around Barack Obama's use of the word "undivided" in his speech before the Annual AIPAC Policy Conference. In the end, the American people are left with a confused position that is constantly being reinterpreted by advisors because "undivided" was nothing more than an empty word with great symbolism but no weight.

Before the Annual AIPAC Policy Conference, Barack Obama clearly said that Jerusalem should be the "undivided" capital of Israel. Barack Obama and his advisers knew what this word would mean to his audience.

OBAMA: "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided." (Sen. Barack Obama, Remarks At The Annual AIPAC Policy Conference, Arlington, VA, 6/4/08)

Yet, only a day later, Barack Obama said the future of Jerusalem would have to be negotiated by Israel and the Palestinians. Barack Obama was no longer prepared to say that Jerusalem should be undivided.

CNN'S CANDY CROWLEY: "I want to ask you about something you said in AIPAC yesterday. You said that Jerusalem must remain undivided. Do Palestinians have no claim to Jerusalem in the future?" OBAMA: "Well, obviously, it's going to be up to the parties to negotiate a range of these issues." (CNN's "The Situation Room," 6/5/08)

*** UPDATE *** The RNC also hit Obama hard on the topics with a research memo, entitled, "THIS WEEK IN CHANGE: Is Breaking Promises And Straddling Positions On Key Issues Change We Can Believe In?" (See full memo below).

PUBLIC FINANCING

Yesterday, Barack Obama Announced He Will Opt Out Of The Public Financing System In The General Election:

Obama Has Declined Public Financing In The General Election, Calling It A "Broken System." "In a web video emailed to supporters, Obama asks his supporters to help him 'declare our independence from a broken system.' Of course, it's not so much a broken system that explains why he's passing on the FEC's $80+million. He will easily raise more than he could ever get in public funding." (Jonathan Martin, "Obama Opts Out Of Public Financing," The Politico's "Jonathan Martin" Blog, www.politico.com, 6/19/08)

But Earlier In His Presidential Campaign, Obama Claimed To Support The Public Financing System:

"Mr. Obama Was The Candidate Who Proposed The [Public Financing] Pledge In The First Place, In February 2007, A Time When He Was Not Raising The Prodigious Sums He Is Now." (Elisabeth Bumiller, "Skirmishing By McCain And Obama On Financing," The New York Times, 2/15/08)

In April 2008, Obama Claimed He "Would Be Very Interested In Pursuing Public Financing..." Fox News' Chris Wallace: "If you can get that agreement, you would go for a publicly financed campaign?" Obama: "What I don't intend to do is to allow huge amounts of money to be spent by the RNC, the Republican National Committee, or by organizations like the Swift Boat organization, and just stand there without -- (cross talk)." Wallace: "But if you get that agreement?" Obama: "I would be very interested in pursuing public financing, because I think not every candidate is going to be able to do what I've done in this campaign, and I think it's important to think about future campaigns." (Fox News' "Fox News Sunday," 4/27/08)

In Response To A 2007 Questionnaire, Obama Said He Would Accept Public Funding In General Election.

· Obama Even Referred To His Plan As A "Fundraising Pledge" For His Opponents To Accept. Obama: "In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge." (Sen. Barack Obama, "Presidential Candidate Questionnaire," Midwest Democracy Network, www.commoncause.org, 11/27/07)

The Washington Post: "Pardon the sarcasm. But given Mr. Obama's earlier pledge to 'aggressively pursue' an agreement with the Republic an nominee to accept public financing, his effort to cloak his broken promise in the smug mantle of selfless dedication to the public good is a little hard to take." (Editorial, "The Politics Of Spare Change," The Washington Post, 6/20/08)

NAFTA

Fortune Magazine Reported Obama No Longer Planned To Reopen NAFTA Unilaterally And Admitted His Rhetoric Had Been "Overheated And Amplified":

"In An Interview With Fortune To Be Featured In The Magazine's Upcoming Issue, The Presumptive Democratic Nominee Backed Off His Harshest Attacks On The Free Trade Agreement And Indicated He Didn't Want To Unilaterally Reopen Negotiations On NAFTA." (Nina Easton, "Obama: NAFTA Not So Bad After All," Fortune, 6/18/08)

"Now, However, Obama Says He Doesn't Believe In Unilaterally Reopening NAFTA. On The Afternoon That I Sat Down With Him To Discuss The Economy, Obama Said He Had Just Spoken With Harper, Who Had Called To Congratulate Him On Winning The Nomination." (Nina Easton, "Obama: NAFTA Not So Bad After All," Fortune, 6/18/08)

· Obama: "I'm not a big believer in doing things unilaterally. ... I'm a big believer in opening up a dialogue and figuring out how we can make this work for all people." (Nina Easton, "Obama: NAFTA Not So Bad After All," Fortune, 6/18/08)

Obama Admitted His Primary Rhetoric Was "Overheated And Amplified." "'Sometimes during campaigns the rhetoric gets overheated and amplified,' he conceded, after I reminded him that he had called NAFTA  'devastating' and 'a big mistake,' despite nonpartisan studies concluding that the trade zone has had a mild, positive effect on the U.S. economy." (Nina Easton, "Obama: NAFTA Not So Bad After All," Fortune, 6/18/08)

But Campaigning In Ohio During The Primary, Obama Attacked NAFTA Repeatedly As Bad For America And Threatened To Withdraw Unilaterally From The Free Trade Agreement:

In February, Obama Pledged To Renegotiate NAFTA With The Threat Of Withdrawing Unless It Was Renegotiated. "In their final head-to-head meeting before Tuesday's Ohio and Texas primaries, Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.) declared that they would opt out of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and Mexico unless those two countries renegotiated the pact's labor and environmental provisions to the United States' liking." (Editorial, "At Best, A Pander," The Washington Post, 3/1/08)

Obama: "I Don't Think NAFTA Has Been Good For America - And I Never Have." Obama: "Ten years after NAFTA passed, Senator Clinton said it was good for America. ... Well, I don't think NAFTA has been good for America - and I never have." (David Espo, "Obama Hits Clinton On NAFTA Support," The Associated Press, 2/24/08)

CORPORATE TAXES

Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal Reported Obama Favors Reducing Corporate Taxes:

The Wall Street Journal Reported That Obama Would Consider Lowering Corporate Taxes. "Sen. Obama's nod to lowering corporate taxes comes as Republicans have been attacking him for proposals that would raise the cost of doing business, such as his pledge to raise the tax rate on capital gains, and his vow to increase the top income-tax rates, which are often used by small, unincorporated enterprises. He didn't say how deeply he would cut the rate, but said it could be trimmed in return for reducing corporate tax breaks, simplifying the tax system." (Bob Davis and Amy Chozick, "Obama Plans Spending Boost, Possible Cut In Business Tax," The Wall Street Journal, 6/17/08)

Just Last Month, Obama Called Corporate Tax Cuts "The Exact Wrong Prescription For America":

Obama On Sen. McCain's Economic Proposals: "And his proposals, which are essentially $300 billion worth of corporate tax cuts ... I think is the exact wrong prescription for America." (NBC's "Meet The Press," 5/4/08)

IRAQ WITHDRAWAL

In His Discussion With Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Obama Claimed That He Would Consult With Iraqi Leaders And U.S. Military Commanders On His Plans For Withdrawal:

Obama Told Zebari That He Would Not Make Any "Irresponsible" Decisions That Would Endanger Gains In Iraq And Would Consult With The Iraqi Government And U.S. Military Commanders On His Plans. "Mr. Zebari said that in addition to promising a visit, Mr. Obama said that 'if there would be a Democratic administration, it will not take any irresponsible, reckless, sudden decisions or action to endanger your gains, your achievements, your stability or security. Whatever decision he will reach will be made through close consultation with the Iraqi government and U.S. military commanders in the field.'" (Editorial, "Mr. Zebari's Message," The Washington Post, 6/18/08)

Previously, Obama Committed To Removing Troops From Iraq Regardless Of What Military Commanders Advised:

Obama Committed To Withdrawing Troops From Iraq Regardless Of The Advice He Received From Commanders On The Ground. ABC's Charles Gibson: "And, Senator Obama, your campaign manager, David Plouffe, said, 'When he is' -- this is talking about you - 'When he is elected president, we will be out of Iraq in 16 months at the most. There should be no confusion about that.' So you'd give the same rock-hard pledge, that no matter what the military commanders said, you would give the order to bring them home?" Obama: "Because the commander-in-chief sets the mission, Charlie. That's not the role of the generals. And one of the things that's been interes ting about the president's approach lately has been to say, 'Well, I'm just taking cues from General Petraeus.' Well, the president sets the mission. The general and our troops carry out that mission." (Sen. Barack Obama, Democrat Presidential Candidate Debate, Philadelphia, PA, 4/16/08)

DEATH PENALTY FOR OSAMA BIN LADEN?

On Wednesday, Obama Said That If Bin Laden Were Captured, He Would Not Make Him A "Martyr":

Obama: "I think what would be important would be for us to deal with him in a way that allows the entire world to understand the murderous acts that he's engaged in and not to make him into a martyr." (Caren Bohan, "Obama: U.S. Should Avoid Making Bin Laden A Martyr," Reuters, 6/18/08)

But In The Illinois State Senate, Obama Supported Legislation Making Terrorists Eligible For The Death Penalty:

Obama Voted In Favor Of Legislation That "Provides For The Imposition Of The Death Penalty If The Murder Was Committed As A Result Of Or In Connection With The Offense Of Terrorism." (H.B. 2299: Senate Floor Third Reading, Passed, 55-0-1, 11/28/01, Obama Voted Yea)

"An Anti-Terrorism Plan That Passed The Illinois Senate ... Makes Terrorists Eligible For The Death Penalty, Expands The State's Wire-Tapping Authority And Could Send Someone To Prison For Getting On A Plane With A Gun." (John Patterson, "Anti-Terrorism Bill Clears One Hurdle In Legislature," Chicago Daily Herald, 11/29/01)

This is how naive Obama is. An undivided Jerusalem? Jerusalem is the cradle of three of the major religions of the world (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). Somehow I don't think they are going to be undivided anytime soon. Perhaps Barack can write a speech though that will convince them?
McCain's flip flops would take volumes to enumerate.  It took this many words to state that Obama is self financing his campaign, and that he doesn't want to meet with McCain every week for a town hall?

please. (use two syllables to pronounce).

It's time to come together for our country.  Bush/Cheney have created a fascist state with corporations running our government.  The Republican Congress has "borrowed and spent" us into an irresponsibly huge deficit, with the paper being held by the Chinese and some oil rich states in the Middle East, and McCain is willing to borrow even more.

It's time to join together to work towards electing a Democratic President with a workable Democratic majority in both the House and the Senate.

This time do something smart and vote for your wallet, vote for the economy, vote for the environment, vote for jobs, vote for America!

Vote for the smartest candidate in the race, a real leader (and no that's not McCain, who graduated at the very bottom of his class -- not by a long shot)

Vote Democratic 2008 -- don't let the corporations and their Republican stooges win again.

Of course Israel and the Palestinians have to negotiate.  They are not going to stop talking just because Israel believes that Jerusalem should remain the captitol, as it should.  They will still need to have discussions. This is taken completely out of context by the McCain camp or is the McCain camp really that  stupid?   Maybe the McCain camp really is that stupid to try to pass off these ridiculous statements!
See the thing I am learning about John McCain is that everything has to be done on his terms or they will not happen.. If you disagree with him you are then cast as untrustworthy and not honest..

Okay ole dude did you not see what his response was on the questionaire.  It was "yes" but under certain conditions..

We all know that the republican plan was to lure this inexperienced junior senator into taking public campaign funds and then unleash all the extra cash the RNC has to smear and attack him..

But what happened was that he stepped back and said you know this is not in the best interest of my party.. so to that end being that we are struggling financially to compete because of the DNC's shortcomings then I have to keep the momentum going so that we don't get creamed in November.

Note to republicans.. its called leveling the playing field.. I know that you repubs are not comfortable or used to playing on a level playing field for fear of being exposed.. I know you repubs are used to always having the most money of all in the land but guess what?  NOT THIS TIME...SO LET'S JUST MAN UP AND SEE WHAT YOU ARE REALLY MADE OF....
Seriously, does the GOP have anything to say about themselves and their candidate, or are they only capable at nit-picking and criticizing everything the competition does and is.  America is tired of the negativity, grow up GOP!

p.s. MN is gonna stay blue again in '08
Will the real Obama Please Stand-up
It is so good to see the repubs crying like little babies. They are helpless to stop our movement for change.

Obama has created, and perfected the concept of public financing, and there is nothing that the out dated repubs can do about it!
Obama must attack hard. If people listening to the MSM only hear this drivel, thats what they'll believe. McCain is such a fiasco as a candidate, he needs hit hard.
All negative all the time? Expected something different from McSybil - though as the nickname implies, perhaps we shouldn't be surprised at any turn.
While that was a very entertaining memo, I am still waiting for John McCain to explain whether he is for or against Immigration reform. Maybe he could ask Joe Lieberman and get back to me.

Obama/Biden '08/'12

P.S. Also, Senator McCain can you ask Mr. Lieberman how long are we going to stay in Iraq - 4 years or 100? Oh, another thing, are you for the Bush tax cuts or against them? Are you working to reduce lobbyist influence or are you letting them run your campaign? Should we close Guantanamo Bay or just hold all the folks indefinitely? Let me know what Joe thinks!
I'm still confused on the Jerusalem issue...why is the status of a city in the middle east part of our national campaign? I personally couldn't care less whether it is whole or in little pieces...I don't think mccain really does either except to pander to the jewish vote...
Now this is funny.

Seems like McBush has forgotten that he is the King of Flip Flop in this election.

Not to mention that he "Never loved his country until......"

Has Cindy McBush made a comment on her Flip Flopper husbands "never loved" comment.  She seemed to have plenty to say about Michelle Obama.

What do you have to say Cindy?
Keith Olberman got the facts right:

You know, I'd take McCain's complaints about Obama going back on his pledge to take public financing if McCain weren't CURRENTLY VIOLATING CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS.
McCain...you called your wife a "see you next tuesday" during an interview the press for some reason refuses to publicize. You flip flopped on most issues to pander to the extreme right. And now, you have the audacity to challenge Obama's honesty?
Whuh-evah!
Steve Schmidt,
How does Barack not accepting public financing (taxpayer dollars) affect me? Why should I care?
Whatever John McCain - you and the GOP are old news.

YOU and your party will never be as trustworthy as Barack Obama and the Dems .....YOU GUYS have a reputation of taken advantage of our trust.

Nothing you GUYS say about Barack Obama and the Dems will ever matter..EVER.   YOU GOP's had your chance to hearn our trust and you BLEW it.

Say BYE BYE to the WHITE HOUSE GOP's..  now take that money you stole from U.S. and have a great life vacation..

We are taken Congress..Senate.. Governorship, Mayorship.. Judges...and most importantly the Presidency.

You bums

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
An analogy:

Player: Coach are you gonna let me play?
Coach: No son, terry's already doing extremely well...we're almost about to win the Super Bowl!
Player: But coach you promised you'd let me play...you broke your word.
Coach: We're winning the Super Bowl...if I put you in...the other team might come back and beat us! Why would I risk that?

Be smarter people. More money from 1.5 million Americans who demand something different IS public financing.
The GOP is trying to do a slick willie on Obama. McCain and the GOP are trying to dictate to Obama on how to run against him and I for one am glad he is rejecting everything they are doing. Obama can go to Iraq when he wants to not at the word of McCain and company. If Obama don't want to take public funds for his run at the White House then so be it!!! The GOP is a fund raising machine. I mean lets not forget the last two elections!! So, for him to opt out I say great!!! What everyone needs to realize is that we can change our minds when the situation calls for it. We all know that McCain has done it enough in the past!!! At least Obama is aware that he is changing his mind, god knows as old as McCain is, he would probably never remember!!!
I would think that the many years of experience that John McCain has of flip flopping dishonesty far exceeds the few flip flopping dishonest allegations against Obama. So McCain wants to run on his experience. So be it. Let him run on the many years of experience he has being a dishonest flip flopping Washington insider. Fine by me.

Here is a suggestion. Let's find some highly skilled investiagtive reporters and ask that they go back and count the number of times that McCain has been a dishonest flip flopper while in office versus the number of times for Obama while he has held office.  Whoever has the "shortest" list of flip flopping dishonest comments or positions wins the election. And who would win? A no-brainer of course. McCain would be taking an early retirement to Arizona.
Good luck with that, McCain camp.  For every flip flop you try to use against Obama, 2 or 3 or 4 can easily be found for McCain, with audio and video. Besides, it's mostly inside baseball stuff.  Bottom line: It's already all about Obama and he's pretty good at parrying the negative.

The negative is all McCain has.  Listen to talk radio and you will hear Obama supporters talking about Obama and McCain supporters ALSO talking about Obama.  You will hear almost NO enthusiastic  support of McCain for his own sake.

McCain's support is much softer than Obama's and Obama has tons of money to define himself AND McCain to the public before McCain can do the reverse.  This is no Bush/Kerry re-march.  McCain is much weaker than Bush was, Obama much stronger than Kerry was and he is the first Dem who is going to be coming into an election way ahead of the R's on fund raising, with the broadest base of contributors and therefore volunteers and voters to go with all that TV, ever!

And just think of all those young voters who actually made it to caucus and primary.  How many more will turn out to vote in the big one in November? It's MUCH more common for a first time newly registered voter to vote in a general presidential than in a primary, much less show to caucus.  And they are VERY hard to poll in advance.  McCain will have to come up with more than a few flip flops and the fear card featuring nouns, verbs and 9/11 is pretty worn out.

mccant being the virtue of honesty.and never changing his mind
There is a great book written by John Dean (Former Nixon Whaite House Chief Counsel) it's called "Conservatives Without Conscience".  In it he methodically cites a number of scientific studies that have researched the mind of a "conservative".  Among the scariest qualities are:  "Authoritarian", "situationally rational" (I.E. someone who twists reality to fit their views), "contradictory" (I. E. someone who is pro-life and pro capital punishment, pro freedom and pro Guantanimo, etc.). These people are power oriented (or power complicit) and seek to dominate as a way to control their environment. Thier way of dominating to to knock down anyone who disagrees with them (E.G. Rush Limbaugh, FOX News, etc.).

Dean describes these post-Goldwater conservatives (Newt Gingrich et.al.) as a new idieology: "Authoritarians".  What's most frieghtening when you look at thier methods is that these people are closer to facist / nazi mentality than anything we have seen in America to date.

John McCain can't make up his mind where he sits on this fence. He claims to be a "Mavrick," but the only thing mavrick about John McCain is his inconsistency.

Despite McCain's honors as a war verteran, the fact is that he graduated as a flunky (894 of 899) from the Naval Academy. His greatest pre-politics achievement seems to have been as a light weight boxer in his academy days. And while we can honor McCain's perseverance as a war hero, we should not forget he was shot down after only his 23 missions over Viet Nam. Experienced fighter pilots in that war flew many hundreds hundreds of missions. Some pilots often flew 3 and 4 sorties a day. By that count, McCain lasted all of a week in Viet Nam. Other than touting his war record - who is John McCain? Does he have the "smarts" and intelligence, and mental capacity to lead as president, or is he likely to be another "Bush" - puppet of the Authoritarian right?

More than ever, citizens of America have to ban to protect our freedoms from this encroaching "Big Brother".  The Republican party has gone to pot and it's time to wash them all out of office. It's time to call these new extremists what they really are:  AUTHORITARIANS.  It's time to question whether John McCain is REALLY in touch with his faculties.
Very Plainly the Republicans dont mention all the Reasons for Obama doing what he has been doing.  The Repubs have taken almost all of Obama's wordings completely out of context, or ignore large portions of what else he said about them.  On Nafta I think that making sure that American Corporations dont screw the Mexican workers or their environment with their well know unsafe and insane practices that we Dont allow in the US anymore (but Mexican Officials can be bribed to look the other way while they do it there!) is a Reasonable reson to ReLook at NAFTA.  The things that Obama wants to do is to make trade REALLY Fair, Not just fair to our Corporations, which is the way it is Now.
So I think that the way they are lying about this one point makes it plain that this is just a small example of the lies throughout this entire letter: it is worth less than the pixels it is written with and deserves no mention other than the fact it ranks with The Examiner in honesty!!
I am inured to political rhetoric. The past seven years we've had nothing from the Bush administration, and their Republican supporters, but spin and lies. "The Iraq invasion will be paid for by Iraqi oil revenues." "If anyone in my administration leaked the name of a CIA agent they will be fired." "Heck of a job, Brownie!." We all know the litany, its too depressing to relate. Obama is a master politician? Fine with me! As long as he does half of what he claims he will:  move us away from oil, use diplomacy before using force, cut middle class taxes and restore taxes on the rich to pre-Bush levels, etc he can B.S. all he wants.
Get real McExxon is talking about honesty, McFlipper, McFlip, Flop, Flip!  McChange with the wind.  McKill; Women and Children with Napalm!  Mc Leave my wife while she was on her death bed!  McDepends that needs to changed now!  Come on, and they think this guy has honesty!
This is the biggest piece of Red propaganda pie, yet.  What the McCain camp would like is to parrot around on Obama's shoulders to reach larger masses of voters.  McCain does not dictate to Obama.  McCain is not going to stomp his feet and get his way on how Obama chooses to run his campaign.  McCain has double talked since last summer on every imaginable topic including the taking of public financing.  The hypocrisy here is comical were it not for the large microphone the McCain media darling continues to get.  I am so sick of seeing one side to every single attack.  Were that the stage were lit and attention span of the low information voters greater.  I am so ashamed by McCain's pathetic attempt to paint Obama a liar.  He really has lost his bearings.
Where is the offset of what McCain said.  Oh I guess the wrong way express has NEVER changed theri  position.

As to the Public Financing it is clear that he said he would sit down and discuss to opt out with McCain.  He did not pledge to stay in. If I wanted to get a McCain talking point sheet I would of went to the RNC.  Maybee you can provide us a link to them and cut out the middle men.
Wow.  This is quite an attack.  It reminds me of another one... between a pot and a kettle.

I'll bring up a few points.  One is about Jerusalem.  "Undivided" means that Obama doesn't believe in building a wall down the middle of a city as Israel has done with it's West Bank wall.  But when you have a holy site with as much meaning for Christians, Jews, and Muslims as Jerusalem does, there is going to be some negotiation on how you share that territory and its use.  That is just plain common sense.

On campaign finance:  33 million people (on average) over the last 5 years have checked the $3 box [according to the FEC] -- that makes for $99 million dollars each year.  Obama's 1.5 million donors (plus) have an average donation of less than $200.  The Obama campaign takes no money from registered lobbyists or PACs.  The Campaign controls the money and, if MoveOn is any indication, he gets the 527s to stay out of the campaign.  It sounds to me like he's found a much less "broken" way to fund a campaign.  And if his first political ad is any indication, he'll be able to run positive instead of negative.

I know that some people are upset or disillusioned that he didn't take the public financing.  But he is a candidate with a sound strategy to win the election.  Would they be happier if he gave all those $25 and $50 donors back their money, only to lose the election or to let the agenda be set by 527s with no accountability to the American voter?

John McCain is a rolling "Tail Hook" scoundrel.
The list coming back in response is going to be much longer. The GOP has nothing.  They are making it up as it goes. Gas prices high(drill, tax holiday). They are trying to stay on current events because the past for them is all so horrible.
McCain..

POT..MEET KETTLE.

Why does he get a free ride and Obama can't wipe his arse without being "POUNCED ON, BLASTED," etc?"
Whoa, when did this become the McCain for President website. Why don't you take more of a neutral stance and debunk some of the claims at least. Look, I believe Obama has to answer some of these questions but when you put the longest article I have ever read on here with no alternative view, that makes it a little biased. I know MSNBC leans Democratic so I am not saying you guys are in the tank for McCain, but this was kind of ridiculous.
Look who's talking about honesty.  McShift who says one thing today and something else the next.
It's an old Republican trick – misquote and distort an opponent's actual statements, then condemn what you say he said, all in order to avoid attention to McCain's own blatant flip-floppery.

The tragedy is that too often it works, particularly when the RNC releases are repeated but not critically examined.
Since Obama was so fond of voting present and not taking a stand, fence straddling is what we can expect from him.  Obama as usual.

Obama is not ready, is ill-prepared, is under-qualified, is mostly un-vetted, is a black racist,
extremely radical. has extemely radical friends and to me is totally unacceptable.

I voted AGAINST Obama and for Hillary and I support McCain (he is a patriot and will put America first). We don't know what Obama will do.  He offers change but has not said what the change is to.  It would probably be a change to something totally unacceptable.  You think???  I know!!!!

Vote sensably--VOTE MCCAIN (A CHANGE WE CAN LIVE WITH)
Ok, so instead of offering the country solutions to these issues, the repubs think it's more beneficial to attack Mr. Obama. They must really be running on empty.
flip-flops or just lies?We finally are seeing the real Obama----and he has yet to vote on FISA---will he capitulate like Pelosi,Reid and the other spineless Democrats?I would love to know how the Republicans keep the Democrats in line? What do they know that we have yet to find out.Received our letter to donate to the Obama campaign.Have never signed on to his site but I gues Kerry gave him our name----he should quit drooling over any monies or vote we would give him.Quit move-on when they decided we should support him.He already took our Clinton votes away from us----affirmative action.
"Flip-flopping on a prior pledge, Barack Obama says he's not going to take public funding for his White House bid"

Who wrote that for you, one of McMayday's McFlunkies?

Seriously, I doubt the answer to a questionaire can be fairly characterized as a "pledge" (much less a "solemn promise" as McWelfarequeen called it), and there is at least one view of this as Obama actually allowing the public to continue to fund his campaign - if they so choose to contribute.  What McSocializedcampaign is doing is preventing the public from voting with their checkbooks.
The Republicans obviously learned nothing from the dem. primaries. These negative attacks will not work to defeat Obama. If they didn't work for Clinton, they will not work for McCain. They should put more effort into their own problems.

Obama's camp should avoid this road also. He doesn't need to go there. He should respond to every attack by McCain. His camp is strong at pointing out hypocrisy. This is one area where i think a good defense is the best offense.
McCain offers chage we can live with.

Obama offers change.  Change to what????

This article nailed Obama the flip-flopper of the year.
Hmm.  I may have to take back an earlier comment about First Read and MSNBC, at least for a day or two.

Thanks guys, for reporting this.  Certainly it will be responded to and reported from the other side again and again and completely ignored by the likes of Eric, Salinas and MSierra, but thanks anyway.

OK, folks.  Time to rip on McCain's first marriage and his age.  Go for it.

Wow I cant believe MSNBC actually printed this. Have your knees gotten sore from bowing to Obama. Have you decided to look for facts as opposed to splashing around in drival? I may spend a little more time here looking for the truth!!!! Thank you...
donna, Name one that that Obama will change??  Other that being the most inept of ineptness.  Think about it!!!!

This man uses his intellect as a means of manipulation to sew seeds of false hope in young, impressionable man-children raised with MTV values.  People talk of his vast, poly-syllabic vocab and his ability to 'string sentances together.'  Since when was being a fast-talking huckster requisite for the office of POTUS?  Oh yeah, 1992.

This man will be a terrible president.
Regardless of your politics...this a one very effective hard hitting piece. Seems to me McCain has also hired himself an excellent speech writer.
What is happening to my canidate ? Does obama say anything that is true or he will stand behind ?????
Today it is Jerusalem . yesterday Public Finance, before that  after saying he wouldn't raise taxes, he now plans to raise income and social security taxes. I am regretting voting for him.
