McCain's day in Canada

From NBC/NJ's Adam Aigner-Treworgy
OTTAWA, Canada -- In an allegedly non-political visit to the Economic Club of Canada today, McCain defended the North American Free Trade Agreement and notably avoided any talk of his opponent.

Speaking over lunch, McCain lauded NAFTA as the creator of 25 million jobs in the United States and more than 4 million jobs here in Canada, but rather than explicitly attacking Obama over his desire to renegotiate the agreement -- as he has done for months when speaking on the topic -- today McCain merely nodded in his direction.

“Even now, for all the successes of NAFTA, we have to defend it without equivocation in political debate, because it is critical to the future of so many Canadian and American workers and businesses,” McCain said, vaguely alluding to his opponent. “Demanding unilateral changes and threatening to abrogate an agreement that has increased trade and prosperity is nothing more than retreating behind protectionist walls.”

For much of the speech, McCain stuck to the stated intent of his trip up north, thanking Canada for its support as a partner in trade and in Afghanistan, and he assured those present that if he were to become president he would do his best “to expand these ties of friendship and cooperation between our two nations.”

After his speech, McCain spoke to reporters about issues pertaining to the Canadian-American relationship. Taking questions from mostly local media, McCain did his best to avoid questions pertaining to his opponent or the presidential race, despite traveling here as a candidate and not a senator.

“We didn’t feel it was appropriate for the taxpayers -- while I am the nominee of my party -- to pay for a trip that would have accrued to the cost of the taxpayers,” McCain said. “But I announced before I went, and I had plans to go that the purpose of my visit was the same as it was to London, the same as it was to Paris, the same as it has been to other parts of the world. And as you know, I have traveled extensively over the years that I have been a member of Congress.”

But on past trips McCain has traveled with his Senate staff, not his campaign staff as he did today. Nonetheless, when asked to compare his outlook on Canadian relations with Obama’s, he demurred.

“I cannot here,” McCain said. “I can as soon as I return to the United States, and I have described it numerous times in as short a time ago as yesterday. And I want to assure you that I’ll discuss it again tomorrow and in the coming days. But [that] would then lend a political bent to this visit… Right now, that’s not the purpose of my visit.”

Is Canada voting in the election?
There is one thing that John McCain and George Bush have in common. They both create their own reality. Anyone who doesn't agree with them is not patriotic. Recipe for disaster.
Isn't John McCain the one who said that we will have to deal with Hamas since they are now in power when he wasn't running for President? He surely is. Now he's mister,"Bomb first, ask questions later."

Whatever.

Prime example of how you use taxpayers money to fund your campaign efforts and then disguise them.. My friends.. that is called GAMING the system.. which further illustrates how he would GAME the public financing system had President Obama agree to this foolishness..
>> Is Canada voting in the election?

Mexico is voting in this election, so why not Canada?
McCain is right. NAFTA and other trade agreements made by Clinton and Bush have been very good for the country. It's very difficult to get that point across though when you have a populist like Obama essentially telling lies to the people that want to hear them. Even if Obama becomes President though, I doubt even he believes much of his own rhetoric. Even Obama knows, at least privately, that protectionism has never worked and would be a terrible idea. Obama's pandering though to the mindless is both wrong and dangerous.
Yeah, you have traveled and I have paid for all of them. What have I received for all of your trips? Let's see. One job went to Canada and Mexico, one job, with the Japanese, went to Mexico, and one job, a steel company went to who knows where. China? By golly, I am real blessed with your trips. I can't wait for 4 more years of your distruction.
well he can kiss ohio, pennsylvania, and michigan good bye.  Its OK to want NAFTA and CAFTA but mccain fails to want to renegotiate NAFTA and CAFTA and thats just wrong.

interesting

Certainly Europe would vote for Obama. They know a push over when they see one.
I look forward to McCain taking the exact opposite position tomorrow.

I also look forward to McCain's trip to Mexico where he then affirms his support for NAFTA.

I also look forward to David Broder's column where he blithely ignores McCain's flip flops and takes on Obama's decision to wear a flag pin, when he once said that he wouldn't.

In Broder's world, Obama's Flag Pins and Opting Out of Public Financing is equal to McCain's NAFTA, Immigration, Offshore Oil Drilling, Bush Tax Cuts, flip flops.
Pitch that one in Ohio Johnny. Oh thats right, your stance on issues changes with the weather and the location.
I guess if we had someone like Obama in office throughout our history, the US would still be making buggy whips and typewriters while open trade  countries would be making computers and CAT scan machines.

Obama is chatting up the faltering economy across the country while McCain is praising job-killing NAFTA as good for Canada. What's wrong with this picture?

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Obama babbles on endlessly about 'renegotiating' our trade agreements. But, just like with everything else, he never provides the details. Just what terms does he want to negotiate? What if the other countries don't want to renegotiate? What if other countries want to better the terms they have, while making the terms the US has worse?

Obama supporters blindly follow their leader without ever thinking of the consequences. These treaties were made with a lot of hard work by a lot people in a lot of countries. And now Obama is going to unilaterally make them null and void? The chaos that creates in the markets would make 1929 look tame.
here's what McFluffandstuff doesn't want you to know

Canada is not voting in this election, but we are not so stupid as McCain thinks.  We, the Canadian people, see right through the double-talk - this was a sad attempt to make an statement about internal politics.  I guess he's taking another lesson from his mentor's playbook.

I heard part of his speech - and this is such a joke - he was lecturing those in the audience about the importance of respecting treaties, trade agreements, and articles of trade law.  He said that only by respecting those agreements and working within the framework of international laws could the US and Canada prosper.

Hilarious - here's a man that publically condemns your own Constitution - "habeus corpus bad" - and yet lectures his country's largest trade partner (aside from China) over respecting the rule of law.

Let me tell you - Canadians are laughing their pants off today at this joke of a politician.
There he goes again..........................

Talking Economics THAT HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND IN HIS OWN COUNTRY,  in Canada a foreign Country

John McCain doesn't care about We The People

John McCain poked We The People in the Eye with is priorities

First Priority...............Iraq

Second Priority..............Canada

OK SEN. MCCAIN WHAT COUNTRY IS NEXT?

While Americans struggle in this Recession caused by the Republicans who could care less AFTER RUNNING THE DEFICIT UP

Sen. McCain Voted against Oversight in Iraq NOW 9 BILLIONS DOLLARS IS MISSING AND UNACCOUNTED FOR
Let’s see what the honest answer is to this question including how giving Tax Cuts to the Rich has affected hard working Americans.

The Answer....................................

The War in Iraq has balooned the National Debt  from a Surplus in 2000 to 5.7 Trillion in June 2001 when the first tax cuts (For The Rich) were enacted to $9.4 Trillion Today 6/9/2008. That’s 3.7 Trillion in New Debt just as Medicare and Social Security are reaching Crisis proportions.  A Significant amount of the Deficit is owed to Foreign Banks.

CNN:  America is borrowing 2 Billion Dollars a Week from China to finance the war.

CNN: The top 1% (The Rich) of Americans received 99% of the growth in America within the last 7 years.  The remainder of the American People  99% received ¾ % of the growth.

Tell John McCain to go to Michigan and PA and tell them what he's telling Canada

Let's see how that works for him

John McCain a man who said, "

I DID NOT LOVE MY COUNTRY UNTIL ..................

IS PROVING HE DOES NOT LOVE AMERICA BECAUSE HE KEEPS PUTTING OTHER NATIONS/COUNTRIES FIRST

WHILE HARD WORKING AMERICANS STRUGGLE, DIE, ARE INJURIED AND VETERANS AND HARD WORKING AMERICANS ARE LIVING ON THE STREET

JOHN MCCAIN FEELS RIGHT AT HOME IN THESE FOREIGN COUNTRIES ESPECIALLY SINCE HE KEEPS GIVING THEM OUR JOBS, PAYCHECKS, LIVELY HOOD ETC..........
NAFTA..............................................

CAUSED TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY

CAUSED TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF MICH, PA AND OTHER STATES, OHIO

CAUSED THE VALUE OF THE DOLLAR SO DROP SIGNIFICANTLY

CAUSED HARD WORKING AMERICANS TO LIVE LIKE THEY ARE APART OF A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY

TOOK HOMES, FOOD ON THE TABLE, CARS, JOBS FROM HARD WORKING AMERICANS

JOHN MCCAIN "YOU ARE DOING A HECK OF A JOB"
It's easy to see by the posts here which side is thoughtful, and which side is not.
Clifton Chads, New Castle TN------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sounds like you are one of the red-necks that started up a post NAFTA business and have been able to make more than the 18,000 dollars per year that you were making before. OR....you employ illegals to avoid the normal wage and benefits like you would have to pay an american.

You are citing a localized, if even that, result.

NAFTA is killing american business and you are an idiot if you cannot see it.

Next time you have a though like the one you posted...let it go.
It's so great to have McCain in our country for the day.

Our conservative government needs the boot about as badly as Bush does, and having McCain up here will only help in that effort.

The only downside is - we have no one close to an Obama to supplant Prime Minister Harper.

Although, anyone would have to be better. Picture a Bush who is actually smart - and that's Harper.
AMERICANS HOMES ARE UNDER WATER IN THE MIDWEST AND THE LEEVES ARE STILL BREAKING

JOHN MC CAIN IS IN CANADA TELLING HARD WORKING AMERICANS TO GO IT ALONE, APPARENTLY SINCE HE DOESN'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF ................

RECESSION

PRIOR HE WAS IN IRAQ AND CRITIZING SEN. OBAMA FOR NOT ABONDONING "HIS COUNTRY" AND GOING TO IRAQ WHILE HARD WORKING AMERICANS ARE IN A SUFFERING RECESSION

THANK YOU SEN. MCCAIN, STAY IN IRAQ AND IN CANADA AND WHATEVER YOUR NEXT COUNTRY TO VISIT WILL BE

WE HARD WORKING SUFFERING AMERICANS WILL STICK WITH THE CANDIDATE WHO IS SHOWING US HE REALLY CARES BY ADDRESSING OUR ISSUES AND NOT THOSE OF

PATTING FOREIGN COUNTRIES ON THE BACK WHILE HARD WORKING AMERICANS SUFFER THROUGH THIS RECESSION CAUSED BY YOU, THE ADMINISTRATION AND THE REPUBLICANS

WE WILL VOICE OUR VOTE IN THE FALL AND IT WON'T BE FOR SOMEONE WHO DAILY PROVES THAT HARD WORKING AMERICANS ARE NOT HIS PRIORITY

IT'S THE ECONOMY STUPID
Jay - Vancouver, Canada: Let me tell you - Canadians are laughing their pants off today at this joke of a politician.

Jay, that's funny because we here in the US have been laughing at what a joke of a country Canada has become.
WHO PAID FOR THIS TRIP?

PLEASE TELL US THE TAXPAYERS DID NOT PAY

THAT'S WHY WE WILL NOT SUPPORT PUBLIC FINANCING BECAUSE THE JOHN MCCAIN'S OF THE CONGRESS USE

OUR HARD EARNED MONEY COURTING FOREIGN COUNTRIES ON OUR TAX DOLLAR WHILE HARD WORKING AMERICANS ENDURE THE RECESSION

THE PERFECT EXAMPLE OF GAMING THE SYSTEM.
Duel Personality McCain said….. “We didn’t feel it was appropriate for the taxpayers -- while I am the nominee of my party -- to pay for a trip that would have accrued to the cost of the taxpayers,”
-----------------------------------------------------

Instead he meant………
My  sole predilection is dual-- so my next trip will be ACCRUED TO THE COST OF THE TAXPAYERS; BECAUSE MY CONDITIONS ALLOW REVERSING DECISIONS OR being  the ULTIMATE FLIP AND FLOPPer.
Btw: I would encourage you to join us in a 100 year stay in Iraq and possibly Iran. Thank you in advance, as you I am entitled to be the ULTIMATE FLIP FLOPPER AND 6 OIL COMPANIES WILL GET NO-BID CONTRACTS IN  IRAQ.

Any trade agreement should be reviewed to be assured to achieve its goal for the U.S.  It is clear some provisions have worked and some have not.  To claim a unilateral review is odd.  Obama has only stated he will review its provisions with Canada and Mexico to insure it meets U.S economic interests.  Of course McCain has never changed his positions( offshore drilling, torture, tax cuts, take public campaign financing then do not then do again etc, etc, etc). One thing is clear Ms. Fiorina, his key economic advisor, has no problem with outsourcing U.S. companies and jobs for a bigger profit.  So with this in mind I am sure her views and McCain's are all is well in our trade agreements as long as business can maximize profits even if it hurts the U.S. economy.
McCain Just lost Ohio!!
anyone else think McCain could pass of as "Fire Marshall Bill"
You know, I'm a big Obama fan, but I really don't appreciate any canadians making fun of our country or any of our politicians. Jay, your country hasn't done much on the world stage, so I just don't see where you get off being critical of man I disagree with politically, but admire as a great man that has served his country. Please leave your nasty comments about McCain at the border before you enter here next time.
What the heck's he doing in Canada?  Are they voting this November?  Where's he going next?  China?
How many electoral votes does Canada have?
John McCain in Canada?  WTF is he doing.  I thought he was running for President of the U.S.A..

He is there because they want to be out of the American Media spotlight so they can do their dirt ...

GOP ..same old ..same old dirty bastards....

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
