Bloomberg defends Obama from rumors

Posted: Friday, June 20, 2008 4:26 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
While talking to a group of Jewish voters in Boca Raton, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg called on those in attendance to defend Obama against a "whisper campaign" that the presumptive Democratic nominee is a radical Muslim and commended McCain for sticking up for his opponent.

Acknowledging that the rabbi said he could not talk about the candidates, Bloomberg said he was going to talk about the election process instead. However, he quickly brought up Obama's name, saying it was important as Jewish people and voters to "keep the conversation focused on the facts and not let it to descend into false rumor and innuendo."

"Unfortunately, we have already started to see that happen," Bloomberg said to the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. "As I am sure many of you know, there are plenty of emails floating around the internet targeting Jewish voters and saying that Senator Obama is secretly a Muslim and a radical one at that. Let's call these rumors what they are -- lies. They are cloaked in concern for Israel, but the real concern is about partisan politics and Israel is just being used as a pawn."

"We cannot be pawns in that process," he continued. "These demagogues are hoping to exploit the political differences between the Jews and the Muslim people to spread fear and mistrust. This is wedge politics at its worst and we have to reject it loudly, clearly, and unequivocally."

Bloomberg also stressed that the United States is a country that protects the freedom of religion, and the Jewish people "have a particular responsibility" to promote that. "We cannot allow people to go on and demagogue and use stereotypes and start whisper campaigns. It is an outrage and we of all people know how hurtful that can be."

But Bloomberg was quick to show he was not promoting one candidate over another, giving McCain credit for his efforts. "He's done the right thing by denouncing this whisper campaign, which speaks to his character as a stand up guy and an honest leader. And, after all, Sen. McCain knows what it is to be a target of a whisper campaign. He faced the same slimy low ball tactics during the 2000 South Carolina primary."

A for effort Mayor Bloomberg!!  If only we could have the John McCain of 2000 instead of the John McCain of 2008 - wishful thinking........
Way to go, Mr. Bloomberg!
Wow, a another reasoned politician...Obama has some company!!
"But Bloomberg was quick to show he was promoting one candidate over another, giving McCain credit for his efforts."--Shouldn't that be quick to show he was NOT promoting one candidate over another...I realize it's just one word, but it is such an important word.
What about the new newsweek poll just out.  Has Obama up by 15 leading in all categories.  Can we get some details guys
Thank you Mayor Bloomberg- Honesty will prevail and the cowardice liers shall fall in shame.

I think it is a complete insult to the jewish people for some group to think they would actually fall for such non- sense.  Absolutely shameful.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
Looks like Bloomberg has joined the knock down the straw man brigade. There is no whisper campaign of Obama being a Muslim. That's just something that rattles around in the brains of conspiracy theorists, and people like Bloomberg, which are one and the same I guess. Democrats though are great for making themselves out to be victims to try and get the mindless drone's sympathy vote. This looks like just one more instance of that tactic.
Ditto, Thank you Mayor Bloombery.

However, Sen. McCain does support the rumors, he pretends to stand tall while his surrogates throw rocks at Sen. Obama

Sen. McCain also has a memory problem, like NAFTA, Sen. Obama said he would revise NAFTA to be more beneficial to our beloved country because it's current structure hurts hard working Americans

Sen. MCCain is in Canada saying Sen. Obama is against NAFTA

Unfortunately Sen. McCain is more patriotic to Canada and Iraq because he has thumbed his nose at hard working Americans struggling in this awful Recession and FLOODS OCCURRING NOW1

WHAT A REMINDER OF KATRINA WHO SEN. MCCAIN VOTRD AGAINST EVERY LEGISLATION PUT TO A VOTE ON THE FLOOR TO HELP THE KATRINA VICTIMS. THEN HE TRIES TO DENY IT;.  BUT THE RECORD IS CLEAR

NOW HE'S DOING THE SAME THING TO THE MIDWEST, WHILE THEIR HOMES ARE FLOODING, JOBS FLOATED AWAY, NO JOBS, CARS ARE FLOATING ON THE WATER

WHERE IS SEN. MCCAIN?  IN ANOTHER FOREIGN COUNTRY, CANADA, TRYING TO MAKE THEM FEEL GOOD ABOUT NAFTA

WE WILL REMEMBER IN THE FALL, AND CANADA NOR IRAQ WILL BE VOTING

Now tell that to Mrs. "Grandpa Flip-Flops" (Cindy McCain) to stop slandering Michelle Obama.

Do the elderly residents of South Florida really want their beaches contaminated by offshore oil leaks?

Imagine Grandpa Flip-Flops getting stuck in the tar-covered beach sand while using his metal detector searching for Swift Boat medals.
IP Freely: I think the "P" has gone to your brain. I have seen the smears and they exist.  In fact they are #2 in the internet myth list behind "send my $ so I can give you more $".

Bloomberg is a standup guy; what he said was absolutely necessary.  McCain though is speaking out on these things so he can appear honest when actually on policy he has more than two positions and misleading Obama's consistent approach.
Looks like the Obamaites better get their tinfoil hats on. Martians are trying to control them with their mind control ray guns.
Great job Mr. Bloomberg! Thanks for sticking up for the only hope this country has left.

The GOP are going to continue to try and attack on Obama on personal issues, most of which are false, and/or racist.

FR, why do you bait the Obama supporters like this? My goodness, they are big enough fools already, and you seem to want to keep proving it over and over.
Thank you Mayor MIke for being a voice of reason.
Oh No not again Bloomberg! I thought Lieberman was the only chameleon. Change is definitely a moniker.

Your right, it shouldn't be called a whisper campain when it has been so blatantly out there. I have had more than one person approach me who falsely believed Obama's a muslim.

Wher have you been?
Sorry IP, it's real alright. I've had these repugnant e-mails forwarded to my own inbox having made the rounds among members of my extended family. Nice try, though.

As someone who has received several of these emails in the past 4 months let me just say you really have no clue what your are talking about.  Before flexing your e-muscles, research your facts.
Now if we can reign in the lunatics who spread the McCain "Manchurian Candidate" crap.

Newton's law of political exchange is that for each vicious and false e-mail, there is an equal and opposite vicious and false e-mail.
this is Bloomberg's way of telling Johnny McHumptyDumpty not to go there.
Obama isn't a Muslim. He's Portuguese.

Obama/08
I voted for Obama over Clinton in the TX primary because his views are more progressive, hers more conventional. I approached the GE with an open mind, having heard that McCain was something of a "maverick".  However, I have been quickly turned off by the negative campaign that McCain's camp is running.  If Republicans want to win over independents like me, they have to focus on getting out their ideas about the issues instead of wasting words on negative attacks. Yes, words do matter.  Why are they so slow to learn from their past mistakes? What worked in 2004 won't work now.  Thank goodness Obama has set up a website to fight the smears and is wise enough to accept true public financing from small donors.  He will need our help to fight the lies, twisted "facts", and distortions from people who obviously have nothing better to talk about.
Doesn't Barack have Michelle out there to defend him from all the bad people?
When done with his statement, Bloomberg called Obama and told him it was now safe to come out from under the table.
Good reasoned response. Add this to Moveon.org forgoing their 527 in response to Obama requesting that 527's disband. One thing is clear Obama is moving towards a more inclusive public funding system.  90% of his donors are under $100.00.  What about John McCains? The DNC and Obama's campaign  will not take federal lobbyist money. Add to this the public finance law is broken( 527's arose out of it) and McCain has made it clear he will not stop the smear tactice of his 527's. Sounds like the case for true public fiancing is one McCain talks about and Obama is striving towards.
I hear Barack is very upset about all this. He's up to three packs a day now to calm him down.
Well said Mayor Bloomberg.  Oh, yes, there is a whisper campaign.  I got an e-mail at work sent by a co-worker that sent it to everyone on the job.  As a school employee we are required to read our e-mail everyday.  I told my boss that I did not appreciate this and she stopped them.

I just don't see what Bloomberg has against us being prawns in the process. Prawns are good eating, and good for you, and they help the economy of the gulf coast. And, . . . . , whats that? Oh, pawns, nevermind!

Obama 06/11
I'm not a pawn. I consider myself a queen.
McCains wife is in Vietnam working with the SMILE group she sits on the board .Will be going to Cambodia to do some charity work. I was glad to see Obamas wife made it to the view to show off her new make over. I thought she did a great job there. She says if Hubby gets the nod she might move to Washington after all. Good to hear that too.Fun to keep up with these hopeful first ladies too.:)
Maybe Bloomberg does want a vp ya think? He'll be nice to them both and that way if either asks hes in.I was waiting for someone to ask which Obama was going to enforse if he got it. Remember it was Canada that was told Obama just talking politics. Like the Iraq thing too.We have to have 5 ans to these things with truth only as shown by others. Than its oh ya but its fixed. Hope Hillary is on the roll call or is that fixed too?
Thank you Mayor Bloomberg.  It makes me feel good to know that there is at least one ex republican with some class.

Joe (Sent Friday, June 20, 2008 4:38 PM)

Well Joe, one of the things that I can tell you is, when eveybody over the last two days was reporting the latest Quinnipiac poll numbers showing Obama ahead of McCain in several key states, what they conveniently didn't share with everyone is the fact that the poll numbers for Bush and Kerry at this exact same time of the year in 2004 were exactly the same as the numbers for McCain and Obama.

In May of 2004 Bush and Kerry where tied just like McCain and Obama were last month in May.  In June of 2004 Kerry was ahead of Bush by the same 5 to 10 points in the same states, just like Obama is ahead of McCain in the latest Quinnipiac Poll.  We all know who won the 2004 general election.

The other poll number that the press has conveniently not reported from the latest Quinnipiac poll is the number of Former Clinton Supporters who said THEY WILL VOTE FOR MCCAIN in November, that number is 25% and the poll shows that the number of people who supported Clinton who said that they will vote for McCain is growing each time they conduct the poll.

So all the people who get fixated on any of the polls that show Obama ahead at any point, need to brush up on their history.  There is five months until the general election and a lot will change between now and then.
O'bimbo may not be a radical muslum, but he is a radical liberal. He will be weak when it comes to defending Isreal or the US. But he will talk nice to everyone so that we will be liked again. Doesnt that make you Obamatrons feel good?
I spent some time in Canada, it is a beautiful country, the people are friendly, lots of things to do, and, there are a lot of places in which to retire. McCain would fit right in there. He would not have to travel far to visit with Lieberman.
Would someone please tell me why is McCain campaigning in Canada, they do not vote in US elections, did McCain lose his directions?.
Thank you Mayor Bloomberg. The only prominent New York politician of whom we can be proud.
I know you're subject to term limits as Mayor but that's good for the State because we'll need to replace both Schumer & Paterson. Your pick, if only there were two of you.
Life long NY Dem
yyea the racial and religious swiftboaters are ready to spread their indecency on America but America as a whole is too smart for their bs.  I see obama is up by 15% over mccant I am only suprised it is only 15% it should be 99%.

Sorry but you are wrong.  I have received several e-mails stating that Obama is in fact a Muslim.  However the original author of the e-mails is never known.  There are so many lies out there about Obama that are not true and these lies are constantly brought up by right wing talk radio personalities.
Senator McCain has character, integrity and class.  Something the Chicago bred politician knows NOTHING about.  Playing the race and religion cards will backfire on Obama/Axlerod.
The only whisper campaign about obama is coming directly from obama and axlerod.

Kudos to Senator McCain for sticking to the issues.
Bloomberg appears to be playing nice.  Good for him!  Let's hope that politicians start following his lead.
What it's all about is drug cartels and big oil.
IM HOPING OBAMA IS ELECTED, IT REALLY MAKES SENSE TO ELECT A GUY THAT HAS BEFRIENDED KNOWN TERROISTS, HAS A RACIST PREACHER, THAN TO ELECT A WAR HERO.  I HOPE ALL THESE YOUNG PEOPLE THAT HAVE NEVER HAD TO WORK, AND WONT EVEN BE ABLE TO FIND A JOB WHEN HE IS PRESIDENT FINDS OUT WHAT ITS LIKE TO POOR AND HOMELESS.  AND I HOPE ALL THE WHITE WOMEN THAT BUY BLACK TOYS HAVE THEIR FANATISES FULFILLED.

obama wants us to come together in the spirit of
ANDREW GOODMAN A YOUNG JEWISH MAN
MICHAEL SCHWERNER A YOUNG JEWISH MAN AND
JAMES CHANEY A YOUNG BLACK MAN SHALOM.
PLEASE COPY THE ABOVE ARTICLE ABOUT FIGHTING THE 'WHISPHER CAMPAIGN' TO AS MANY BLOGS, POSTINGS, AND NETWORK AND MEDIA SITES, EPECIALLY POLITICO.COM AND REAL CLEAR POLITICS.  THE MAJORITY OF THOSE ARTICLES AND RESPONSES FROM THOSE TWO CTES ARE ALWAYS NEGATIVE OR TITLED WITH NEGATIVE CONNOTATION AGAINST OBAMA.  A GOOD EXAMPLE WAS WHEN BOTH SITES IMPLIED THAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE NO EVIDENCE OR POSSIBLE INTENT ON USING 527S TO SMEAR OBAMA AND THEREFORE, DECLINING PUBLIC FUNDING WASN'T REALLY WARRANTED.  WHAT DO THEY TAKE US FOR, IDIOTS!???  HOW DO WE KNOW THERE ISN'T GOING TO BE AN OCTOBER SURPRISE FROM A 527 GRUOP, ESPEICALLY IF THE POLLING SHOWS A CLOSE RACE.  IF OBAMA TOOK PUBLIC FUNDING, HE WOULD HAVE BOTH HANDS TIED BEHIND HIS BACK WHILE THE 527S SHOWED NO MERCY NOR TOLD THE TRUTH IN THEIR POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENTS.
obama is a FRAUD!  I don't care who supports him - I will NEVER vote for obama - and seems that there are MILLIONS of us that feel the same way.

McCain - 2nd Best Choice - NEVER obama
Here's what makes me angry. And I am an obama supporter First off I think Barack Obama should be scrutinized in the media, but why is McCain given such a free pass. Every complaint mCCain has had about obama over the last week or so from campaign finance to taxes, he himself has flip flopped so many times on his postions I can't even count. yet all the news today is about Barack opting out of public finanancing. Isn't mcCain being sued for public campaign finance fraud... Where is the media coverage of that... talk about bias... And now we are critizing people's logos. And to be fair I thought it was stupid for MCCains green backround on the night Barack got the nod to be even news worthy... Where is the journalism. Somtimes I think you news guys and gals are IDIOTS
I would love to see Bloomberg as VP for Obama. What a great match!
