Obama makes pitch to N.M. women

Posted: Monday, June 23, 2008 4:46 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC/NJ’s Athena Jones
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Obama launched the third week of a tour focused on the economy, an issue at the top of voters’ minds this election year, with a roundtable discussion with a group of women workers at a female-owned café here Monday.

VIDEO: Sens. Barbara Boxer, Clare McCaskill and Beddie Sabato acknowledge the difficulties both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama faced in their campaigns, and go through their list of the most important issues for women that need to be addressed by the next administration.

In his brief opening remarks, he talked about his support for legislation to ensure equal pay for women, expanding family and medical leave as well as the tax credit for children and dependents and his plans to offer more after-school and early education programs. He began by talking about his appreciation for working women, noting that he was raised by a single mother, and about his grandmother who rose to become a bank vice president. He also talked about his wife.

“I am here because of my wife Michelle, who is the rock of the Obama family and who worked her way up from modest roots on the South Side of Chicago, and who’s juggled jobs and parenting with more skill and grace than anybody that I know and looks good doing it too,” he said to laughter. “Michelle and I want our two daughters, Malia and Sasha, to grow up in an America where they have the freedom and opportunity to live their dreams and raise their own families.”

Obama said women in America had come a long way but still faced obstacles, including a lack of equal pay, due in part to an federal policies that have not valued families. He argued John McCain’s record on women’s issues was lacking, saying he was a better choice.

The senator talked about having co-sponsored a bill -- the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act -- that would have reversed a Supreme Court decision last year that made it harder for women to challenge pay discrimination. He criticized McCain for not supporting the bill and suggesting that the reason women were paid less was because they need more education and training, not because of discrimination.

“John McCain has it wrong. He said the Fair Pay Restoration Act ‘opens us up to lawsuits for all kinds of problems.’ But I can’t think of any problem more important than making sure that women are getting a square deal on the job. It’s a matter of equality. It’s a matter of fairness,” Obama said. “That’s why I stood up for equal pay in the Illinois State Senate, when I was in the state legislature, and helped pass a law to give 330,000 more women protection from paycheck discrimination. That’s why I’ve been fighting to pass legislation in the Senate, so that employers don’t get away with discriminating against hardworking women like Lilly Ledbetter.  And that’s why I’ll continue to stand up for equal pay as president. Sen. McCain won’t, and that’s a real difference in this election.”

Obama said he would expand a tax credit that would help working families get up a 50 percent credit for child-care expenses, double funding for afterschool programs and invest in early childhood education. He criticized the Arizona senator for proposing tax cuts he said favor mainly the very wealthy and said he did not have a plan to expand paid family and medical leave.

The presumptive Democratic nominee was introduced by New Mexico’s Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, a former Clinton supporter who said she was now supporting him.

“I was an early and enthusiastic supporter of Sen. Clinton, who I felt like was an incredible candidate. But I also made it clear every step of the way during this primary process that I would be supporting the best Democratic candidate to replace the Republican administration that we have frankly suffered under for the last eight years,” Denish said. “Today Barack Obama is that man. We know one thing, John McCain is not that man.”

The focus on issues of concern to women is important for the Obama campaign as it aims to make sure those women who supported his former rival Hillary Clinton come to his camp and not McCain’s. Denish is the latest in a string of Clinton supporters -- and the second major female supporter, the first was Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm – to speak on behalf of Obama at an event in the last week. Today’s discussion begins a week that will end with Obama and Clinton campaigning together in New Hampshire in the city of Unity, a town they split evenly in the Jan. 8 primary.

Also in attendance was the First Lady of New Mexico Barbara Richardson and Obama closed his opening remarks by hailing her, Denish and Clinton.

“I know that we’ve drawn closer to this America because of extraordinary women, women like the lieutenant governor and your first lady, the extraordinary woman who I shared a stage with so many times throughout this campaign -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton,” he said. “And in the months and years ahead, I look forward to working with her and to women all across the country to make progress on the issues that matter to American women and to all American families -- health care and education; support for working parents and an insistence on equality.

Obama spent about 40 minutes answering questions from the group of about 25 women on paying for education, healthcare, taxes, encouraging small business development and how to help women who are victims of domestic violence.

*** UPDATE *** The McCain campaign responds this way: “When talking about his campaign against Senator Clinton, Barack Obama said that women voters are going to ‘get over it’ when they get to know John McCain’s record. When you consider women are a major driving force behind small business start-ups in this country, Barack Obama’s proposals to raise taxes on millions of small businesses isn’t going to help women voters ‘get over it’.  Additionally, Barack Obama’s plan to put government in between women and their personal physicians isn’t going to help them ‘get over it’ either.”

Get real McExxon is talking about honesty, McFlipper, McFlip, McFlop, McFlopper!  McChange with the wind.  McKill Women and Children with Napalm!  McLeave my wife while she was dieing on her death bed!  McNAFTA; giving American jobs away.

My friends; you must excuse me I need to change my depends!

My friends we do not need health care, we need to Bomb the sick with Napalm! It worked well in Vietnam.  I torched many women and children during the Vietnam War.  They were never sick!

My friends my wife is a "C", now that’s change you can count on!
Obama support of partial birth abortion is all you need to know about abortion.  That is disgusting and I think he should have to go and watch such a procedure.

I'll take McCain any old day over Obama.

NO OBAMA
Barack got off on the wrong foot in NM when he raised his right hand and said "How".
Obama is very good on women's issues. He will win an overwhelming number of women in November. Women can't seriously consider voting for McCain.

Great Obama stuff!

Gov. Diane Denish: "Barack Obama is an incredible candidate, but for the life of me, I don't know why? I just read whats on the card someone gave me."
No one behind Obama with scarfs on their heads I hope? Nice that that problem has been cleared up.
Again, obama pulls his "typical white" grandma out when he needs her. It was so easy to throw her under the bus to defend Rev. Wright though! He's a snake!
P.S to the coward using my name a few posts back in the "white sheet" comment- get some class!

You forgot something BO. Remember that kitchen sink you accused HRC of throwing at you?  You forgot to promise to give them that, too, if they want it. And, hey, you forgot to tell them how Wednesdays will be "free chocolate ice cream day."  And, if you don't want to work and take care of yourself, not a problem, BO will pay your way.  Thinking on it, why should anybody want to work now since BO will handle it all for you.  How convenient.  More ice cream, please.****   Nice sexist remark, BO, about how your wife "looks good doing it." You jerk.****PLEASE deliver us from having to hear one more time how you were raised by a single mother. That does not make special, MILLIONS of children are raised by a single mother and some of them actually learn not to lie and break their promises.  Besides that, seems to me you were really raised by grandparents since your mom seemed to be off "chasing rainbows" a lot of the  time.
Obama support of partial birth abortion is all you need to know about abortion.  That is disgusting and I think he should have to go and watch such a procedure
--------------
No, Hillicrat, he shouldn't just watch. He should get up real close and personal. Depending on the procedure, he could watch as they make a hole in the babys brain. Then, he could watch as the head collapses as they suction the brain out.  If they do the other procedure, he could stand right there and watch a partially exposed baby squirm as it gasps for air.  Then, he could "clean up".  He should have to be responsible for lifting that poor little dead body then foot tap the garbage can so the lid comes up and throw the baby in it. SLAM. The lid goes back on the trash can; a life snuffed out before it begins.  Thank you SO MUCH, Mr. Obama, for being part of the murder.
"...and she looks good doing it too."  Meant to be a "joke," but again emblematic of the sexism he is so blinded to within himself.  Thanks for objectifying your wife for us, Barry, and letting us know what you think of the womenfolk.

The McCan't camp should not EVER talk about women's issues, as they have no idea what they are talking about.  He doesn't respect his own wife (or wives, as it were) - how am I to believe that he respects me?

Lily - why so angry?  Don't you like chocolate ice cream (LOL)?

I don't agree with abortion, either, but I don't want to go back to having women butchered in back alleys so we can appease our superior moral code, either.  I can't, in good conscience, vote for McCain.  Saying vile things about Obama isn't going to make me vote for McCain either.  He's not perfect but, they are the only choices were currently have.
How come McCain can't tell us what he's done that's good for women and women's issues? All I ever hear from him is how wrong Obama is. That's not enough to convince me why I should vote for McCain--the guy who voted against free healthcare for children, who votes against women's healthcare issues, who will stack the Supreme Court to take away my right to chose, and who voted against equal pay for women.

He sure has an interesting way of trying to get my vote.

=========================================================
Get with the flow! You are so atypical. The bus is waiting  for you. Obama's bus is like the love train.

Go Obama
"Hillicrat supporting McCain "is either ignorant of Hillary's position on abortion being the same as Obama's or one of those people who never would have voted for a democrat in the first place making it look like they were for Hillary.
MOST OF US WOMEN ARE WELL INFORMED AND ARE CAPABLE OF CRITICAL THOUGH.  TO CONTINUE TO IMPLY THAT ALL WOMEN ARE SO PATHETIC AS TO ONLY BE INFLUENCED BY EMOTIONS AND HEAR SAY IS EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE.  GIVE ME A BREAK!!!
Nice sexist remark, BO, about how your wife "looks good doing it." You jerk. lily (Sent Monday, June 23, 2008 5:06 PM)

How is that sexist...sheesh, a husband can't even comment on how he is attracted to his wife anymore?
McCain has already kicked one disabled woman to the curb to marry a beer baroness...

Vote for him and you'll see the type of respect he has for you all.

This guy is a joker, a sellout, and sorry excuse for a human being.

Firstread is doing it again. Every time they report on something Obama is doing they attach an "update" with a free response from the McCain campaign. Does Obama get that? Not that I have seen.
Hillicrat,
FYI.  Hillary also supports partial birth abortion.

Just so you know, let's say, the ISSUES of the candidate you are backing. McCain strongly supports overturning Roe v/s Wade
I get so sick of McCain lying, over and over, about Obama's plans.  It's one thing to disagree, but stop making up stuff!!!!!!!!!
Why all the fuss? It's pretty clear Obama is ahead of McCain on women's support.  We've got a lot of desperate Republicans here...hahahaha
What a sexist pig...Besides Michelle does not look good at doing anything.  Sorry guys this is the man who brushed Hillary off his shoulders and said  she was good enough!!!!!Every Great Mom works at a job and with her family ..it is nothing out of the norm UNLESS of course you are Michelle Obama whatever you do is soooo special. Give me a break I cannot stand how MSNBC makes whatever Barack Obama does into  something  outstanding. If Michelle is such a great MOM how did she work fulltime and still be able to send her kids to a private school and be at home when they got back from school!!!! Who is she kidding?????I want 2 NEW NOMINEES  ,I am a lifelong democrat from CT,lived in TX and now I reside in ILLINOIS. Obama will never get my vote!!!!M.A
Obama is addressing programs and policies in a way that gives women credit for having a brain in our heads.  We have real concerns.  Healthcare, inflation, jobs are all issues that matter to women.  I like that he is specifically addressing those.

As for McCain, he should refrain from nasty remarks and start taking women and the issues important to us seriously.

(It would really convince me that these guys could balance a budget, BTW, if either one could tell me what a gallon of milk is going for this week.  Or the last time they pumped their *own* gas.)

http://ilfamilypolitics.blogspot.com
Lily, as opposed to don't worry corporations we'll cover you when you loose your shirt (Bear Stearns), don't worry we'll have no bid contracts for our cronies at cost plus.  I think we can pay for it just by ending that system.  Perhaps you should try and seeing beyond your own wallet and your own lot in life.
Hey McCain: Get over it!

Hey McCain supporters: your fantasy of having another Bush in office...Get over it!

Our country doesn't need you and the past eight years have proven what your ideology will get us.  Time for change.
Obama is good with women issues.  McCain will have women going backwards.  We want someone who will advance women issues such as equality.  McCain's voting record on women issues is anti-women.
Once again - FAKE!!!  All STAGED!!!  Here is a news flash for the obama group - American's are SMART - we know a FRAUD and will NOT vote for him - this guy is a joke!  ANYBODY but obama - who cares about party unity! STOP talking about race - all the time - who CARES if you are black - you are just NOT Qualified.
lily, you sound as though you have never had a man care for you and about you.  The remark about his wife was very endearing about her, how he feels about her in his heart.  Let's hope he never forgets his roots and were he comes from.  That will make him a better President for all women.
Oh - NOW he might need a few women - or how about WV, KY - FL, MI, Jews, Catholics, young, old, working class, retired - just American folks.  obama will say whatever he needs to win over that group at that moment  you are a Fraud and we will not fall for your well prepared speeches in your expensive EMPTY suit.
Well from most of these remarks, it is clear that no one has ever dealt with unfair pay. Well I have for over 39 years. I thought it was over with when I joined the current company I work for but alas no. I started at this job making $4 more than their male admin. assist. - when he left the company he was making $6 more (in 5 years!) an hour plus had medical benefits. I replaced him, told was the better employee but still not making the same and still do not have medical. Want to know why? Told I was a female married and my husband was supporting all that. Wrong again - he is self employed!! Still no medical after ten years here. And the fact that McCain says females will need more training just sickens me. I have run circles around all my male counterparts, plus bosses. Sorry we are just as good as men with or without education.

And I am tired about all the Obama stuff coming out about what he has done, or not done, etc.  How many of you went to volunteer your services after college? How many of you went on to law school to help more people? How many of you are sticking out your neck to run for a government position? All you can do is complain, complain. Did anyone read the article regarding he has more experience as a state senator than a senator at Washington has. Frankly I think most of you are pathetic with your ridulous outcries.

We should be looking at the issues: war, economy, health care, gas prices, just about everything. Bush is at his lowest level yet in approval ratings. Why would you want more? Do you research any of this, its so easy to do.
the lips are moving but is he saying anything?
SO HE S THERE ON BEHALF OF HIS WIFE WHO HE SAID WORKED HIS WAY UP FROM A NOBODY TO A LADY LAWYER MAKING 250 000 A YEAR.  HOW MUCH WOULD THE MILITIANT MADE IF SHE WAS PROUD OF HER COUNTRY=I CANT STAND THE PHONIES=JOHN MCCAIN WAS HUNG BY HIS BROKEN ARMS AND BEATEN FOR 5 YEARS AND TO HEAR YOU FOODSTAMP RATS RUN HIM DOWN MAKES ME SICK. MAYBE OBAMA WILL GET SOME SPINNER RIMS FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL LIMO TO TURN YOU STREET DEALERS ON.  HE MIGHT EVEN BUY A ROCK OR TWO, HE ADMITTED LIKING IT.
Bobbi...you should be the absolute last person to be discussing class. I can always tell in your writing when business has been slow at your boarding house. You and McCain will be getting all the rest you need in November. If you can think of one thing good to say about Mc. it might make interesting reading. Your negative comments usually are little more than immature wishful thinking.
I am so very tired of the Obama bashing by MSNBC.  It would be wonderful if McCain got the same focus when he puts foot in mouth.  I have been reading more at Huffington Post.  Today there are a couple of great articles especially on just who is flip floppin on campaign finance.  I'd like to see a story from First Read about McCain and the trouble he is in.  I have not seen anything about the DNC suing McCain for BREAKING the finance laws.  I wonder if this will get posted.  MSNBC fairness in reporting is all we ask.
to:lily you seem to have a serious problem with SEN OBAMA or are you so bitter and angry about your life . yes he said his wife looks good doing all the things she does what a husband to says those things about her and she does look beautiful and smart also she is there for him that is a marriage. what you see here is the american dream playing out . yes he comes from a single parent home with the grand parents there to help which is rare now. what a story i can relate to . so get used to hearing it, after all it is his life story not yours . you sound life sour grapes let me add one more sentence SEN OBAMA made his decision base on what is best for him so he didn't go with it so what  get over it, McCain be alright just donate more monie like i will do for OBAMA all of his 1 1/2 millions donaters and we are not mad at him why are you and McCAIN. And we know why don't we .Stop with all this crying and bellyacheing.
It seems that more people are finally seeing the REAL Obama. Sick of his student body president promises? He will tell the american people whatever they want to hear! There is a candidate that is is not owned by industry. There is a candidate that has dedicated his life to fighting the corporations that have shipped jobs over seas, sold out our pentions, sold unsafe products to our children and make puppets of our politicians. You have nothing to lose by checking out what he has to say. Take a look at his web site:
www.votenader.org

NADER 2008
Having choices is a GOOD THING.
Bobbi from Wisc. Why are you such an angry woman??
If you were a Hillary supporter how is it you can now support a man who will take women's rights back to the dark ages. It is an insult to what Senator Clinton has tried to achieve her entire political life.Your posts confuse me.
Get a grip and stand up like a Democrat.
McSane have no right to talk about women right, because if you didn't know about McSane women issue just look at the way he treated his ex-wife and kids. And on top of that, he drove cindy into steal drugs for her habit.
Cat Smash, what are you the capt of? Its easy to tell you were never in the military. You sound like an angry child thah just had his favoite toy taken by a little girl and dont have the guts to take it back. Its just easier to whine about being miserable. Its bush's fault that you didnt finish HS and cant get a decent job. I will send you a pacifier.
If Obama thinks that women will vote for him based on his rhetoric, then he either overestimates his appeal or underestimates our intelligence, or both!!

I will proudly stand up for what I believe is right by voting for McCain.
He did not throw his grandma under the bus he told the truth about how she felt about some black people and she is not alone in her way of thinking and its 2008.  I believe he supports partial birth abortion if the mothers health is at risk and he is NOT alone in that thinking. Its better than Mccain overturning roe v wade. Hillary also supports a womans right to choose.
When will the Republicans stop lying about Obama's tax policy?  He doesn't advocate raising taxes on  the middle class or their small businesses.

McCain has a terrible voting record on every issue that women care about and we're not going to forget that just because McCain keeps telling lies about Obama's tax  policy.  We aren't stupid.

The Republican policies McCain stands by have been the rule for the past 8 years and  women can see where we are and won't be fooled by Republican trickle down promises.  They were  voodoo economics when Reagan  first proposed them and they still are.

Our small business did great during the Clinton years and it's been downhill ever since Bush and the party that's supposed to be so good for us took over.

Men and women both ought to know better than to buy the old discredited message McCain is pushing. Especially since his economic advisers are the one's who advocated the policies that have been our economic ruin while he admits he doesn't understand economics.
Don't be fooled by the dirty Chicago-style hype!  Go to www.womenamericans.com for all the facts.  Just Say No Deal!!!
Response to Hillicrat
Bill Clinton put partial birth abortion in and without a second thought in doing so.  So, if you were a Hillary supporter.....you do NOT support McCain.  I do not believe in abortion in any way shape or form.....BUT, McCain is NOT the person for the job of president.  We need CHANGE in Washington and only Obama can deliver that.
Bobbi, Eau Claire, WI   Again, obama pulls his "typical white" grandma out when he needs her. It was so easy to throw her under the bus to defend Rev. Wright though! He's a snake!
*********************************************
What is the problem?? First of all he simply stated a fact about his grandma- I am sure she did utter racist comments, in front of his face.( I know because my white grandfather made nasty comments all the time, but he still loved me and I loved him-BUT I HATED THOSE COMMENTS. Maybe you should try a little empathy and not be so hateful. If you don't like Obama, let it be because of the real issues (economy is a biggie) instead of the fact that he is half-black, or whatever other problem you have with him.

YOUR HATE IS SHOWING VERY CLEARLY!!
lily, and have you looked at your boy McAppleturnover?  Is he pandering or just flat out forgetting?  Maybe the republicans sent Cindy over to Vietnam to get the key word so they could make him act like a puppet.

Talk about Manchurian Candidates!!
What exactly do you mean by "women's issues"? I care about a lot of things, like the economy and health care and national security. I am tired of having RoeVWade held over our heads to try to keep us in line. We will not follow like blind sheep to the slaughter!! I am a life long Dem and I say No BO, NEVER EVER EVER!!!!!!!!

P.U.M.A!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My, my lily, you do seem to harbor an awful lot of anger.

Of course McCain is so pro woman that he calls his wife vulgar names and votes for every anti choice bill that he can.  What's next?  McCain against contraceptives?
Obama has been on the campaign trail for a while.  I don't remember seeing much about his view on woman's issues other than calling them "sweetie".  I guess someone told him woman can vote so now they are a priority.
