First thoughts: Charlie Black's gaffe

*** Charlie Black's gaffe: Yesterday, McCain chief strategist Charlie Black -- who already has drawn controversy for his past lobbyist work -- made one of those classic Washington gaffes, as Michael Kinsley once put it: accidentally speaking a truth that many people on both sides of the aisle believe. In an interview with Fortune, Black said that a terrorist attack would be a “big advantage” to McCain, a comment the all-but-certain GOP candidate immediately distanced himself from. Not only did the controversy distract McCain from his message of the day (that $300 million prize for inventing a new car battery), but it also resurrected the politics of 2004, which as we’ve argued before might not benefit McCain’s prospects. But for what it's worth, there's been chatter among some Democrats that the big fear Obama aides have is just what Black spoke about -- some sort of national security crisis popping up in October. This is why most Democrats who have given their two cents to the Obama VP vetters seem to come away convinced Obama will picked a No. 2 who has obvious national security credentials. That said, what the impact of a national security crisis in October is unknown for this reason: It depends on who initiates it. If it's an outside force, then Black's probably right. But if it's something that President Bush sparks, then Obama could benefit.

VIDEO: NBC Political Director Chuck Todd gives his first read on McCain adviser Charlie Black's comment that a terrorist attack would be a "big advantage" to his campaign.

*** Off-message on offshore drilling? That Charlie Black comment wasn’t McCain’s only off-message moment yesterday. At a town hall in Fresno, CA, McCain admitted that the offshore drilling proposal he unveiled last week would probably have mostly “psychological” benefits, NBC/NJ’s Adam Aigner-Treworgy notes. “Even though it may take some years, the fact that we are exploiting those reserves would have psychological impact that I think is beneficial." Uh oh. Then at a fundraiser in tony (and coastal) Santa Barbara, one attendee took issue with McCain’s offshore drilling proposal, according to the pool report. "We're really kind of goosey here about oil spills, and we're goosey here about federal drilling and oil lands, which are abundant offshore,” the attendee said. “So we ask you to look out there to the south and the southeast and remember the greatest environmental catastrophe that's hit this state and then balance that with the notion of winning California.” Today, McCain remains in Santa Barbara, where he holds a briefing on the environment with Gov. Schwarzenegger, who also opposes the offshore measure. Even though public polls show that majorities support lifting the ban on offshore drilling, McCain isn’t having an easy time with the issue when campaigning on the coasts.

*** The enthusiasm gap: Two polls in the last two days signal a big problem McCain has, and it’s perhaps why it's so important that James Dobson is going after Obama, accusing him “of distorting the Bible and pushing a ‘fruitcake interpretation’ of the Constitution,” the AP says. In the Newsweek poll showing Obama sporting a 15-point lead, the reason for that large lead had to do with the 19-point party identification gap between the Democrats and Republicans. Bottom line: All pollsters these days are finding fewer and fewer folks wanting to call themselves Republicans. And in the USA Today/Gallup poll, 61% of Democrats said they are more enthusiastic than usual about voting in November, while just 35% of Republicans said that. This goes to the heart of the two-fold problem McCain's facing: 1) unhappiness over Bush has driven some Republicans away from the GOP and into either the indie camp or even to the Democrats and 2) some conservatives are just not happy about McCain. Perhaps James Dobson's shot across the bow against Obama will, at a minimum, create uneasiness among evangelicals and move these voters back in McCain's column, even if unenthusiastically.

*** Rove as catnip: Karl Rove has become to the media this cycle what Dick Morris was for a period of time in the late '90s: media catnip. Whatever Rove says these days -- be it at an event or in a column -- it seems to carry extra cachet with members of the media. We're all fascinated with how Rove's brain works (so fascinated, in fact, a couple of reporters got book deal profiling Rove's brain). But the McCain folks, whether they are actually using Rove or not, seem to benefit every time. Rove is able to start cable conversations with some of his observations, whether it’s an over-the-top description of Obama as a country club Democrat or with his electoral maps. But then again, Rove -- even though he no longer works for him -- is tied in voters’ minds to the president with the 28% approval rating. Still, this power Rove still has with the political media is something that McCain's campaign is likely going to attempt to bottle and use at their own will. Rove's independence was helped earlier this week when he attacked both McCain and Obama on the economy.

VIDEO: John McCain has proposed weekly town hall-style debates with Barack Obama leading up to the Democratic convention, but so far Obama hasn't accepted. Should he take McCain up on his offer? A Hardball panel discusses.

*** Two just askin's: How has it Obama hasn't agreed to a town hall schedule with McCain yet? The time between now and the debate season, which begins in late September, is getting smaller and smaller… Also, with the new media narrative that there is in fact progress going on in Iraq -- see Saturday’s New York Times story, for example -- how does that impact the Obama-McCain contest? And as conservative commentator Jennifer Rubin asks, can the McCain camp turn it to its advantage?

*** Mr. Hollywood: Later today, Obama heads to Hollywood for a fundraiser that will include, as the AP reported yesterday, Samuel L. Jackson, Dennis Quaid, Cindy Crawford and Sugar Ray Leonard. Remember: It was around this time in 2004 when Whoopi Goldberg delivered X-rated insults at President Bush at star-studded fundraiser for Kerry in New York -- which turned into a distraction for the Kerry campaign. The AP says that tickets for today’s event are priced at $30,000, with the money split between Obama’s campaign and the DNC.

*** On the trail: McCain remains in California, holding a discussion on the environment in Santa Barbara and raising money in Riverside and Newport Beach. Obama is in Las Vegas, where he has a discussion on energy and the economy before hitting that Los Angeles fundraiser mentioned above.

After more then a dozen articles favorable to Obama yestderday, I see we start today with three negative articles on McCain. Fair and Balanced indeed.
I'm sorry, Obama, who has taught the Constitution at a University level for a number of years, has a "fruitcake" interpretation of the law as compared to Reverend Dobson?  Right.  I wouldn't mind arguing Biblical philosophy with this blowhard, either.
MSNBC certainly has their lips firmly placed on Obamas be-hind.
Would you want either Obama or McCain to come to your town, at a location that is important to you?  What impression would it make on you to see either of them in person?  Have you ever been at any event for a presidential candidate, or even seen the president in person?

I ask, because yesterday was the first time I noticed how old McCain looked.  When he and Obama get side by side, the age factor will not be kind to McCain.  I say this in a nice way.  I just think it is in our nature to be more persuaded by something newer and more invigorating.  The age gap is a big plus for Obama.
I don't understand how republicans are perceived as being tuff on terrorism when they can't capture the people responsible for the 911 attacks. In addition, 911 happened under the republican administration. It sounds to me as though they are weak on terrorism and use tough lanugage to say they can protect us, but their actions are not showing their tuffness. Where is Bin Laden? Why are we in Iraq? These are the questions the republicans need to answer.
Oh, 'pishaw'...
Obama and his people have made many more, and much worse "gaffes" than what Charlie Black said the other day.....But you NEVER, and I do mean NEVER, cover any of them.
First Read is biased towards Obama, untruthful in it's coverage of this election, and the people who run it should be FIRED for malicious incompetence and LYING.
(Of course we know this post will never make its' way to the board)
What's with all the Charlie Black stories? Is he McCains reverend of 20 years or something?
Should be FIRED!!!!
I don't agree that a terrorist attack on the USA would be a benefit for the repugnant ones.  Another attack would signal the utter failure of "War Lover" Bush's phony war on terror.

Why does the media pay any attention to that fruitcake Dobson?  The guy is a constant liar.  He lied about the Hate Crime bill saying it would inhibit the practicing of religion when all it did was make gay bashing illegal, not an integral part of religion.

Yeah offshore drilling would have very little real effect on oil and gas prices.  By the time they would go online in over 5 years our energy situation will be much worse.  Time to end the "Enron Energy" loophole and stop the speculators from ripping us all off.

Go Obama 08/12!
Just Curious Todd.  If the Move On add that you mentioned last week on morning Joe is tasteless or I can't remember the exact word you used, how distasteful  is it when Charlie Black believes a terrorist attack on the US is a good thing for McCain?  I'm just saying, it cuts both ways right?
I guess that is America at this date.....
You tell the truth like Charlie Black did and you get hammered....

The states that want to fight offshore oil drilling should not be allowed to take in any royalty payments or let their citizens enjoy lower gas prices.  Florida and California have shown that their people enjoy paying $5.00 a gallon, especially California.

voter: I don't understand how republicans are perceived as being tuff on terrorism when they can't capture the people responsible for the 911 attacks.

Number of attacks on US assets since 9/11: Zero

Number of terrorists killed since 9/11: Tens of thousands

Now you know.
Right.  I wouldn't mind arguing Biblical philosophy with this blowhard, either.

squintz, philly, pa

I don't know sqintz, we might have to start out by explaining to you who's the guy on the cross.
James Dobson lecturing someone else on religion or the constitution is too funny man...he is an agent of intolerance and he could care less about our constitution if it gets in the way of his view of a christian only America...Dobson is a fruitcake himself
Charlie Black is a fear mongerer AND a racist...he has long been linked with the seamier underbelly of the republican party...he's a gutter snipe

"Whatever Rove says these days -- be it at an event or in a column -- it seems to carry extra cache with members of the media."

And that, my friends, explains, at least in part,  why the media has plummeted in our esteem. I currently boycott ABC News, CBS News and Fox. I don't trust anything these days unless I have researched several sources to verify it. I grew up watching Walter Cronkite; I admired Bernstein and Woodward; I guess you could say I inculcated the ethos of objective journalism into myself, and I recognize, today's journalists do not live by those same ethics.
Priceless that McCain is manipulating us 'psychologically'.  The last thing we need right now are head games from the crazy guy.

Obama doesn't need to 'agree to town halls' with McCain.  As the front runner, I prefer that he pursue any joint meeting on his own terms, he's earned that right.

Rove is irrelevant, the media enamorment is misplaced.  What was it Bush said one time, "I'm in the business of repeating my message over and over".  The republicans are being beat by a minority at their own game.  Charlie Black is foaming at the mouth about it, obviously there will be verbal casualties and overspill.  The main issue I have is that McCain shows a complete lack of character in dealing with his own advisors.  Gramm and Black should be long gone.  But he will keep them around to prop him up on the vast amount of topics he hasn't a clue about.

PS.  Anyone else notice how McCain did a public appearance with the Tesla -  you know 'everyman's environmentally friendly $100K car'?  We should all go out and get one, as Ferris Buehller says, "It's so choice!"
Dick Morris this morning on Today was trying to convince people that the Dem party and Obama will be a disaster to this country.  He will raise taxes, and go extremely to the left, and doom and gloom will come upon us. Allthat after the 8 years of glorious and prosperious bliss,-> With our wonderful "George W. Bush."  OH PLEASE DICK MORRIS, DON'T MAKE ME THROW- UP.  I THINK ALL THAT FAT YOU ARE CARRYING ON YOUR BODY IS SOAKING UP YOUR BRAIN LIKE A SPONGE.
Man, you people need to get your facts right, and I am talking about the people commenting on here about off-shore drilling. Did you see Biden on MTP Sunday? Oil companies already own leases, tons of them, and acres, tons of it, to drill for oil. They are just sitting on them trying to get even more. How about the oil companies use what they have now, greedy sob's.
On Rove, I honestly thought he was describing George Bush when I first heard the martini & smoking comment.  But Rove obviously is trying to throw a few ideas McCain's way.  Not sure that one's going to stick to Obama. Hmm....

I do think it was a pretty big deal that McCain admitted the offshore drilling wouldn't provide immediate relief.  I am wondering why if they think drilling is the answer, we aren't seeing more oil companies drilling on already leased federal lands, like Rep Rahall mentioned a few days ago. http://resourcescommittee.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=389&Itemid=1

I just wish on the gasoline price issue, the two sides would put aside the ideology and deal with a real crisis in the way you're supposed to deal with a crisis -- come together, figure a way to really help people out in the here and now, and just try to do something.  Instead, everyone seems content to stand on their principles while the average Joe and Jane suffers and businesses are starting to shutter their doors due to outrageous fuel prices.  It is really putting out economy at risk.  This is the part of politics I get extremely frustrated with...
Why do you put the onus on Obama to make a deal on McCain's town-hall proposal?  Why don't you call McCain's proposal what it was: a ploy to either (i) get some free air time in his best format; or (ii) make Obama look like he's ducking debates?  The farthest thing from  McCain's mind was informing the voters, and you should recognize that, instead of being blinded by the phony halo you've put over McCain's head.  You guys are too much.
Dobson is no real moral choice for VP like Huckabee for navy man John McCain who will be the president who kills Osama and beats the other muslim Obama who would ruin this country with his stupid liberalistic ideas.  Dobson does not know anything about wars and running Americas military so we can be the worlds super power again.  Vote for John McCain and hopefully Huckabee or Palin she would be great!
Thanks for the great updates, First Read.  You all take it easy and make sure you find time to heal.  We're rooting for you!
James Dobson is not a Christian...
Even the apostles had problems with the
our Lords teachings...
Tolerant people love each other and don't play politics with religion as Dobson has ..SHAME on Him!
Barack Obama is a fear mongerer AND a racist...he has long been linked with the seamier underbelly of the democratic party...he's a gutter snipe
"Also, with the new media narrative that there is in fact progress going on in Iraq -- see Saturday’s New York Times story, for example -- how does that impact the Obama-McCain contest?"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Remember in the old days when the media reported the news instead of created "narratives"? Good times!

P.S. Is the media going to cover the narrative of the Taliban breaking their members out of prison and upping their attacks in Afghaninstan? Do you have to wait for the McCain campaign to tell you what the daily focus is? Geez louise, does every news outlet HAVE to cover the exact same drivel daily?

P.S. This just in - Dr. Jame Dobson does not communicate directly with God. He is just human like the rest of us. His politicization of religion is kind of sad - but hey, it's America, right?
A terrorist attack (= the killing of Americans)would help the McCain campaign. It is a sick thought that the killing of Americans would help win an election. Charlie Black should be fired...immediately.  We will see how McOld's judgment is on this issue. My guess is that he will stall...and stall...and stall.

Remove Charlie Black and grim Phil Gramm...not too many advisors left. Then McOld will have to think for himself.  Won't that be something to hear.
Carl Rove is a crook. He should be in jail some where over the rainbow. Why does the media give people like him a voice. What Rove and the rest of the Bush/McCain administration have done to the American people over the last eight years is down right criminal. They should be tried for war crimes.
Dear McCain guy:

So all the soldiers dead and maimed in Iraq aren't attacks on the U.S.? What are you people smoking?
I can't imagine why anyone is fascinated with Rove; he's the man who blew the 2006 elections for the Repigs. Why do people hang on every word this doofus---who may be deeply involved in Plame-gate---utters, like he's a fat version of King Solomon.
As for a 9/11 attack, let's not forget that the Bush admin, run through its REAL boss, the Dick, could manufacture a terrorist attack very easily.  Then all the timid ones would go running to Grandpa to make the bad people go away.
After more then a dozen articles favorable to Obama yestderday, I see we start today with three negative articles on McCain. Fair and Balanced indeed.

Fox Hound (Sent Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:22 AM)

Maybe you can't read the cover story in the politics section in HUGE letters about Obama's problem with Muslim voters.  Look, obviously some channels are slanted towards the democrats (no wonder!) and the republicans.  Don't whine about it, that's all I hear republicans doing this cycle is whining.
How has it Obama hasn't agreed to a town hall schedule with McCain yet?
--------------------------------------------------

You savvy political reporters ought to know the answer to that: First, Obama is busy building up political organizations in 50 states, especially in Florida and Michigan where he never campaigned. Second, why should he let McCain use him to draw big crowds that the unlovable and rather creepy McCain could never draw himself?

If you're tyring to imply that Obama is "afraid" of McCain's town-hall skills, please don't make me laugh. McCain has made some of his worst gaffes and flip-flops in town-hall settings. Remember "bomb bomb bomb Iran"?
It's great to hear that people are embarassed to call themselves Republicans. I sure hope they are smarter this time around and don't vote for a person who will keep on doing the stuff that has got us in this mess.

Great Obama stuff!

Dear McCain guy:

It's really hard for you lefties to admit we're winning this thing isn't it? Peace in the Middle East will go along way to solving many of the worlds problems. Maybe you should go back to your what ever you're smoking to relieve your pain of being so wrong.
For you guys complaining about "balance" go post on FoxNews website. Balance isn't having an "even" number of negative/positive articles for each candidate daily. MSNBC to their credit comment/report on events as they happen. Blame McCain for his gaffes not MSNBC.
The only "fruitcake interpretation" I find is that the evangelicals believe that McCain's choosing a so-called pro-life judge will result in over-turning Roe vs Wade.  We already have a court with 7 republican appointees out of 9. They could have already over- turned it.  They will not now and they never will in the future.  We have had a republican court that stole an election from a democratic winner and handed it to the republican nominee.  Not one republican has tried to take the issue back to the court.  This is senseless - straight out lying by the republicans.  They have a platform of "I am pro-life" and they never DO anything to change the courts except holler about pro-life judges and even that doesn't matter!

This is hypocrisy in its purest form.

As for Mr. Dobson, I am very disappointed in him and I do not believe he represents his Lord well wnen he makes these kinds of ridiculous statements.

To McCain Guy here is a more important statistic:

How many days has Osama Bin Laden been a free man since he delivered the most massive terrorist attack on U.S. soil in history under the great republican administration:

APPROXIMATELY~ 2407 give or take a few days

To Voter

The planning for 9/11 began under Clinton, with captured planners saying it took some 5 years to plan out. Osama's hatred for America has nothing to do with lax terrorism stances, and everything to do with America's support of Israel. That has ALWAYS been their primary driving force.

And we can't capture Bin Laden because we can't find him. Period. But since he's been on the run ... have we had another 9/11? Take the good with the bad.

And your last question, the reason we're in Iraq is so terrorists can blow up our armed service members instead of our office buildings and schools. Period. The government lied to you because you can't handle it, but there's the reason from a soldier who sees no problem whatsoever with that strategy. That's why they give us guns when we sign the dotted line.

And someone sign their post "I love war... the Republican mantra." Really? Is that a fact? Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq. There. I just named the only engagements a Republican president has gotten us into in the last 100 years. You owe the world wars, Korea, and Vietnam to Dem Presidents, but have fun with your delusion. (That's about 650,000 American deaths to about 6,000, FYI.)
"Nothing better than reading the Obamaniacs in the morning. All this "hope and change" boils down to a bunch of childish name calling, disgruntled basementonians taking all the frustrations of their little loser lives out on the party in power. None of them can actually articulate a reason Obama would be better, just that he's not a "rethuglican", or a "war gnome" or a doddering, senile old fool.
Bruce with a real job, NV (Sent Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:57 AM)"

(1) I HAVE a "real" job, thank you very much.

(2) Umm...we're not the ones calling Sen. Obama "Obambi" or "Obimbo".  We don't corner the market on name calling.  The rethugs have quite the market share.

(3) Why would Obama be better?  Let's see...

*He's well educated - president of Harvard Law review
*He's articulate, rather than Dumb-ya
*He has a smart wife and beautiful children - represents this country well during state visits and dinners
*He is not running around scaring us to death in order to get votes

I would debate policy, but as dense as you seem to be, that would be beyond you, so I'll stick to the simple things.

Strange that you failed to mention any of these many gaffes . . . that would make your argument at least readable . . . as it stands, it looks like more whining.

Was it a "gaffe" when the entire Federal government and media was bullied into supporting the Iraq war for fear of being labled "unpatriotic"? It seems to me that ultimately, that was the "gaffe" that lead to the weakening of our country - militarily, financially, and internationally. Now the same forces make the same arguments - and half of America still buys it. What could be sadder.
"repigs" "McOld" "racist" "war-monger".

This is the vocabulary of the "hope and changers".
CHUCK CAN BE NASTY TOWARD  OBAMA WHEN IS ON MORNING JOE HE LAUGHS AND JOKES WITH JOE WHEN HE'S THERE ALONG WITH MIKA AND COMPANY SO HE ISN'T BIAS TOWARD OBAMA . THE PUBLIC ISN'T STUPID THOSE DAYS ARE OVER THOSE OLD SCHOOL FOOLS CAN'T FOOL A FIVE YEAR OLD .
McCain Guy...

Capture of Bin Laden... Hasn't happened. It's been 7 years. Plus 9/11 happened on Bush's watch. As long as he's out there, they are warmongers, and hardly tough on terrorists.
McCain Guy (Sent Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:33 AM):

McCain Guy:

Number of attacks on US soldiers - thousands.

Number of US Troops killed in Iraq - thousands

Number of innocent Iraqis killed - thousands.

The Leader behind 911 killed or captured -  0

Number of new terrorists enemies produced as a result of Iraq invasion - thousands, perhaps millions.

Number years people like Bin Laden use to plan terrorists acts in the U.S. - 5- 10 years (they are patient people).

Number of major countries stil having confience in U.S. as a result of going it alone and in cowboy fashion in a senseless police action in Iraq - maybe 1 or 2.

Number of U.S. newly created simiulation terrorists training camps used to pursue terrorists activities - 1 (Iraq).

Number of crazy lunatic leaders killed or captured presenting a serious threat to the U.S. - 0 (excludes Saddam Hussein who was crazy and looney but not an immediate serious threat to the U.S.).

Number of idiots who think you can fight terrorism by occupying countries where the local insurgents can hide among the population and come out at will to kill U.S. soldiers - at least 4 (GWB, Cheney, McCain and McCain Guy).

Number of U.S. dollars spent to destroy and then rebuild a country (Iraq) - billions.

Number of terrorists who would rather fight the U.S. over there rather then here because they have the upper hand in location, cheaper and less complicated travel, unending supply of weapons, easier acces to an unending supply of weapons, local support from other rouge nations, more and easier access to recruits, population to hide in, training ground for new recruits.

That's enough for now. Now YOU know!

Black's gaffe sends a message to Al Queada that they can control our politics. What experience are we getting when we believe GOP propaganda.
Why not just go to them and beg for a status quo.
{{How many days has Osama Bin Laden been a free man }}

I guess if you call living in a cave "living". We might want to look to Osama for direction on how to get by living in cave. With the liberals demand we not have any fuel, we'll all be doing it soon.

So you admit that attacks on American citizens anywhere is an attack on America? Or did you just choose to ignore the question and talk to yourself some more?

Clearly, what you are smoking is the remnants of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights.

More questions that you (and your candidate) can't answer:

If we are winning this thing then where are the oil revenues to pay for this debacle? Where are the funds (and troops) coming from to pay for our indefinite stay?  Why is the Taliban retaking Afghanistan and what are we going to do about it?

Rove as catnip: Karl Rove has become to the media this cycle what Dick Morris was for a period of time in the late '90s: media catnip. Whatever Rove says these days ...
--------------------------------------------------

You've  unwittingly given a good example of what's wrong with the corporate media today: they admire an unscrupulous liar who was good at manipulating public opinion, as well as perverting the American justice system to take out political enemies like the former Democratic Governor of Alabama, Donald Seigelman, who was imprisoned for the same "crimes" that Republicans got away with all the time in his state.

Evidently, "journalists" admire Rove because many of them aspire to be as good at cynically manipulating public opinion as Rove is. Sad.
What's with all the Charlie Black stories? Is he McCains reverend of 20 years or something?
Hoarce Vermeil, Pittsburgh (Sent Tuesday, June 24, 2008 9:30 AM)

No, just one of McCain's top advisors...nice try though.
